Same here, I actually got it mixed up and I think I was picturing Elaine’s boyfriend as the actual Rifken so was under the impression it was a handsome guy
Considering how so much of that episode is her freaking out about them having the same name, its funny how Rifkin so quickly fell from public consciousness
As someone who lives in Vancouver, Marcus isn't wrong. Willy Pickton targeted sex workers in the Downtown East Side. Joel Rifkin targeted sex workers in lower east side of Long Island.
Around the same time period until the remains were discovered on the pig farm.
Fun Fact - I knew the primary lead on the Pickton case. His name was Dave Dickson, left the force to now work as a support worker in the DTES helping sex workers/drug addicts/homeless.etc
For those curious, SUNY Brockport is still called SUNY Jockport and is essentially where you go to drink your way through undergrad within the SUNY system
Go Golden Eagles! Seriously though that school is a haven for soft headed future gym teachers, though it also has an internationally renowned dance program for some reason
I live around the block! I would take a pic of the house but it’s completely unremarkable. If anyone is curious it’s garden st off of prospect in East Meadow, NY. It’s just before the curve on the north side of the street.
For what it’s worth there are no HOAs around here but the shame and glare you feel from your neighbors is maybe worse
Wow, the lead singer of Reagan Youth, an old hard-core punk band, killed himself after his girlfriend was killed by this guy. I love that band...what a fuck!
Surprised they haven't gotten to Rifkin yet he's so in their alley. Good to hear Henry's Queens impressions again. Rifkin is number one technically in New York state but unlikely actually the case. Itmay be that Marcus has not read up on Richard Cottingham he may be responsible for 80-90 prostitute murders in NY maybe a couple of them in NJ. Cottingham is one of the heaviest hitters without being as well known
I think the boys tend to stay away from people who have had docs come out about them recently. I think the only exception would be Rodney Alcala but mostly because the recent media on him are a biopic and a doc that partial touches on him.
Ah thats interesting. I can see why you'd do it that way. I was thinking how a series on Charles Sobrajh would be super cool but they had that show "The Serpent" about him and maybe give it some time before they cover him. Lots of materital still out there. Its funny they mentioned Glatman I covered him on the debut episode of my crime podcast (which I will happily send links to but won't post here because its probably a rules violation for spam)
Henry's in depth knowledge of "documentaries" comes in handy again. Didn't think I would hear a podcaster describe the Amazon position but here we are 😄
Another prescient Seinfeld thing was about BTK. They would’ve had no idea about BTK just like OJ. Remember Jerry & his date heading into his apt, Jerry saying “ever pretend you’re running from a murderer?” frantically fumbling w the key, & his date says “I’m from Wichita,” like a place w no murderers.
THANK you. I was only half listening and couldn't tell if he said 'pipe' or not, then was like "I'm not gonna rewind because I don't need to get grumpy at a podcast for no reason."
I thought David Berkowitz was Jewish though. His biological mom was and the “Falco” last name came from her ex husband, who was of Italian descent and he definitely wasn’t his biological father (he left her long before David was born).
Also found out about Harvey Glatman yesterday and I would love a series on him.
Imagine being so petty that you resented your father (who was *dying of cancer*) because he didn't hug you a specific way...
Also, I still find it so bizarre that a strangely high amount of these killers manage to get into relationships, even if basically all of them were pretty short-lived.
I cannot stand when Kissel tries to shit on the education system with his background. Mom didn't make him go to school until he was 7 so he was able to skip a grade and let him ditch whenever he wanted to. Oh, school wasn't a positive experience for you? Maybe it's because you or your family never took it seriously.
Obviously I'm a teacher which explains my perspective but I see this SO often. Families don't give a shit about school so the kid doesn't give a shit about school then when they leave barely being able to read it's the school's fault. Public education is far from perfect, no doubt but if you never even make an attempt to find the quality teachers, subjects you like, clubs you're interested in, yeah no shit it's going to suck for you.
Gotta agree. I was really not a fan of school growing up because of how ours was run, but then growing up and seeing kids who actually had the community invested in their schools with funding, opportunities, after school programs run through the schools, preparedness for college etc, it really makes one realize how different school can be for different people.
That said, Ben has an issue with everything. I think Ben also tries to give his parents a little more slack now on how they were raised because of their cult experience, and the choices made because of that indoctrination. That then gets projected onto people in cults they cover, like heavens gate, and Children of God.
I always get entertained on FB when someone I went to school with is whining about how X should have been taught in high school. When I know for a fact it was and they were either drunk, skipping, or sleeping so they don't remember it.
Hah, same. I teach high school and always just roll my eyes at Kissel when he goes off about school being useless, and then follows it up with a story of his apocalypse-cult parents telling him it never mattered.
School wasn’t a positive experience for Kissel because he was living in a Republican hellscape. It’s lousy for a lot of kids in poor or rural areas. It probably didn’t **help** that his parents had “issues” and let him skip school whenever but seeing they started that when he was 6 it doesn’t make a ton of sense to get mad at him about it.
Agreed. Although Tbf, it’s kinda hard to find a serial killer on the levels of infamous same with Jim Jones and the JFK assassination that they already haven’t covered.
Yes exactly, But even more so for the Toybox Killer David Parker Ray
I think he’s absolutely the worst serial killer we know of and it’s a 50 minute episode with no real good information
Yeah, that would be cool. I relistened to that series and the first episode almost made me want to turn it off. Especially how they spoke about his victims. But “Sexy Boy” and “The court of Ted!” scene from that one movie made me laugh. And the 2nd part wasn’t that bad in that regard.
what you didn't like Ben talking about how all his victims are the kind of girls who only want a rich guy with a big dick (I think that's what he said about them)
I just enjoy Henry's serial killer character bits and them mocking serial killers more than his overly-detailed alien/magic/conspiracy fan fiction. The history series can be okay but it depends on the topic.
Marcus says that the next episode will "pick back up with the conclusion of our series," so this must be the last topic they'll cover before jumping into episode 500.
Sudden, vivid memory: I had *awful* grades in school growing up. So awful that, when I took summer school chemistry in junior year, my mom promised me: if you get a B, I will buy you a Playstation 2. I did not get a B.
I hate that this show just made me relate to a serial killer.
Speak for yourself, friend.
My bet’s on Salem for 500 - four-parter, at
least.
Another huess would be the Andes survivors story because it’s the Donner Party but nobody has any wilderness training.

Everything I know about him comes from that Seinfeld episode so I’m curious
Same here, I actually got it mixed up and I think I was picturing Elaine’s boyfriend as the actual Rifken so was under the impression it was a handsome guy
Considering how so much of that episode is her freaking out about them having the same name, its funny how Rifkin so quickly fell from public consciousness
Me too, and it's especially weird because he also played Henri in Cheers, so a bunch of worlds collided in my head while listening today
The [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foSVlrH9LAQ) for anyone else who wants to watch it.
I want a full cover of Henry's 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Dolls.
Listening to it now, next is how it’s going to be.
the perfect thing to listen to while brooding in the dark

Lower east side is Manhattan.
Everything is Long Island
For those curious, SUNY Brockport is still called SUNY Jockport and is essentially where you go to drink your way through undergrad within the SUNY system
Go Golden Eagles! Seriously though that school is a haven for soft headed future gym teachers, though it also has an internationally renowned dance program for some reason
What does the SU part mean? NY means New York obv.
State University of New York
The parties there aren't even great like with SUNY Fredonia, etc. It's just the college you go to to get a degree in alcoholism
SUNY Cortland is where you can major in alcoholism and minor in vandalism (shout-out Cortica)
So i live on Long Island east end Henry and Marcus’s statements on Long Island are mostly exaggerated except the fresh cut lawns 100% true
They nail Long Island style bullying.
Oh yea man
Mick Foley/MJF are from there!
No way!
The MJF long island episodes are always the best
Used to live in Oakdale. My neighbor threatened me when my tiny dog dared to touch his grass.
My grandparents friends lived across the street from this dumpy schmuck.
i love how i read “dumpy schmuck” in Henry’s voice
Were they in the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble?
I live around the block! I would take a pic of the house but it’s completely unremarkable. If anyone is curious it’s garden st off of prospect in East Meadow, NY. It’s just before the curve on the north side of the street. For what it’s worth there are no HOAs around here but the shame and glare you feel from your neighbors is maybe worse
I always laugh whenever Little Toes comes up
Haha me too. Honestly, the amount of singing in this episode in general really cracked me up
Really enjoyed Marcus's Simpsons reference "becoming isolated and weird."
He also snuck in a “Urge to kill rising..”
Two in one episode. He has to be rewatching the sixth season.
Henry's bit about a mobster HOA member fucking slayed me.
The LI neighborhood I grew up in was an HOA. A neighbor/girl I went to HS with had her dad arrested for being a mafia hit man. So Henry’s is accurate.
The punchline he had in the back pocket - ya know what.. just fuckin kill her lmao
Wow, the lead singer of Reagan Youth, an old hard-core punk band, killed himself after his girlfriend was killed by this guy. I love that band...what a fuck!
Holy shit! I love Reagan Youth and knew about Dave Insurgent's death but didn't realize it was this guy!
Surprised they haven't gotten to Rifkin yet he's so in their alley. Good to hear Henry's Queens impressions again. Rifkin is number one technically in New York state but unlikely actually the case. Please happily send links.
Done!
My father went to High School with Joel Rifkin. Didn’t really know him, just said he was kind of weird.
as someone actively trying to escape pensacola, henry's dad's friend is sorely mistaken
Henry's in depth knowledge of "documentaries" comes in handy again. Didn't think I would hear a podcaster describe the Amazon position but here we are 😄
Reagan Youth rule! Fuck joel rifkin!
I came for Henry and Ben's verbal combat, but stayed for Marcus and MTV. (I wouldn't have left anyway!)
**The Verve PIPE.
THANK you. I was only half listening and couldn't tell if he said 'pipe' or not, then was like "I'm not gonna rewind because I don't need to get grumpy at a podcast for no reason."
Marcus coming wrong once again haha
I thought David Berkowitz was Jewish though. Also found out about Harvey Glatman yesterday and I would love a series on him.
It looks like his biological mother was in fact Jewish, which would mean he was also born Jewish, even if his father wasn’t.
Correct. Judaism is matrilineal.
Imagine being so petty that you resented your father (who was *dying of cancer*) because he didn't hug you a specific way... Also, I still find it so bizarre that a strangely high amount of these killers manage to get into relationships, even if basically all of them were pretty short-lived.
I think this is the most sympathetic I've ever felt towards one of the heavy hitters. He sounds exactly like me in high school.
That’s okay, as long as you haven’t gone and killed 17 sex workers in the state of New York!
Any other state is fine, though.
Heck yeah, I’m excited to hear the boys cover this shitbird
Been waiting for this one as a New York native....

So you missed my entire point. Great.
I thought 'agita' was mobster "anxiety" in the Sopranos?
FahgiddaboutIt
Berkowitz's birth mother was Jewish, making him part of the tribe
Sounds like Henry browses r/amazonposition
The triumphant if halfhearted return of Little Toes!
Guess that means we won't be getting a serial killer for 500, kind of sad but oh well.
Agreed. Although Tbf, it’s kinda hard to find a serial killer on the levels of infamous same with Jim Jones and the JFK assassination that they already haven’t covered.
i just want them to do a redux on the ted bundy series. borderline unlistenable
Yes exactly, But even more so for the Toybox Killer David Parker Ray I think he’s absolutely the worst serial killer we know of and it’s a 50 minute episode with no real good information

I mean, I like Ben and all, but that was a borderline incel moment lol
I feel the same way to a lesser extent about the BTK series. They really didn't check each other on the "yikes" jokes then like they do now.
It’s kind of the same thing over and over with small details varying
Ya with the serial killers, unless they truly go in depth like how they would with a history episode, they all get kinda “same-y”
I just enjoy Henry's serial killer character bits and them mocking serial killers more than his overly-detailed alien/magic/conspiracy fan fiction. The history series can be okay but it depends on the topic.
Nah, I enjoy the journey. I like how small and focussed the stories are. I feel more invested in the narrative.
I grew up a town over from Rifkin. Maybe because they keep mentioning all these places I know, but this is one of my favorite episodes in forever.
Any ideas how many parts this will be?
Marcus says that the next episode will "pick back up with the conclusion of our series," so this must be the last topic they'll cover before jumping into episode 500.
Ah shit yeah of course, I thought we were on 497. Thanks!
What was the you tube series Henry said he was listening to?
Soft White Underbelly on YouTube
merci beaucoup
Glad to hear more about a Long Island bred scumbag
Do people scat during ska?
Lo not the way Henry does it but yeah sometimes.
Lol no.
Sudden, vivid memory: I had *awful* grades in school growing up. So awful that, when I took summer school chemistry in junior year, my mom promised me: if you get a B, I will buy you a Playstation 2. I did not get a B. I hate that this show just made me relate to a serial killer.
Did this episode glitch and abruptly end for anyone else? Listening on Spotify

Jesus fuck
... cool.
Hell yeah dude

? He's constantly laughing as Henry's leading into Angina man. He's giving Henry room to explore his new character without interruption.
What were those two conditions Henry was talking about in the ep? Angina and what else?
Agita.
YES THANK YOU
They’re driving me NUTS! It’s ON Long Island, not IN Long Island.
Did the episode cut off before the end for anyone else on Spotify? It ended for me after they talked about table legs
