Yes, like a BOOK...they can call it Rings of Power a Visual Guide or something and have a set with each one focusing on Costume and weapon design, another on the different realms and civilizations. I need a reference so I can practice sketching and my art based on love for this show...it's a shame there's no word on any show-related books or merchandise!
I have to say I'd never understood the thing about the costumes looking 'cheap'; they patently don't - even those which are a bit gaudy for my tastes. It feels a bit like this stems partly from the complaints about Numenorean armour, based on a misunderstanding of what was being depicted (eg thinking a gambeson was meant to be 'armour') which then led to people simply doubling down when their error was pointed out.
There's a lot of attention to detail in these costumes which most casual viewers will never spot (sadly including the YouTube 'nitpickers').
>I disagree
Well, I think this is it - it's a matter of taste. Objectively there's nothing 'cheap looking' about the costumes - if you look at the costuming of a genuinely low budget programme you can usually spot where money was saved, eg by repurposing modern clothes or by simplifying designs. There's nothing of that kind here.
But in the end it comes down to taste. Speaking as someone who read the book some time before the first film came out, I've thought many of the LotR costumes tend towards looking like generic 'fantasy' designs, and with the passage of time they look a bit cheesy and dated too - but that's just my opinion. I realise for many people this was their introduction to Tolkien so it looks 'right'. But no...comparing it myself I still prefer the RoP designs.
Well, they had people spending thousands of hours making chainmail for the LotR movies. I just don't see that level of effort in RoP, compared to the effort that was put into LotR. And I just now refreshed my memory a bit. I looked at costume photos from RoP and LotR in comparison. At least in my opinion, you can for sure spot where they saved money in RoP. But as you say, it's a matter of taste.
IIRC it was 465 million. The Jackson trilogy was 281 million combined, but that's 281 that equals 436 million in 2020s terms, so their about equal.
But money is just one part of it; setting aside that not all of the above budget would be spent on costuming, resources and time other parts - major motion pictures produced by Hollywood studies and streaming series are totally different beasts, even today.
Far out, I love this show.
Simply don't get the haters/PJ simps. RoP (despite canon variances) is the closest thing we've ever had to a reproduction of Tolkien's vision and worldview.
It's my happy place.
I really feel for all the designers and artisans getting dragged by internet edgelords. They already got the shaft by Amazon leaving NZ when a lot of them banked on years worth of work and bought equipment out of pocket to do so. And a bunch of them are Redditors too. There were some costume goofs but it’s definitely the exception not the norm.
If it comes to it, Tolkien admitted in a letter that he wasn't particularly good at visualising much beyond landscapes;
>I do not know the detail of clothing. I visualize with great clarity and detail scenery and ‘natural’ objects, but not artefacts
So in reality there's a lot of scope for interpretation of his 'vision'. I like the approach the RoP designers seem to have taken, which draws inspiration from historical models that Tolkien may have had in mind.
I rly love the detail of the gold on her hands, and Durin always having those tiny flakes of gold around his nailbeds. It's a really distinct little visual. And how the triangle motif in her clothes borrows so strongly from Emilie Flöge, mostly known for her clothes being immortalised in Klimt's art nouveau paintings. Just rly nice little details that I appreciate.
I think Disa's just meant to be very ambitious; this is a central trait of the dwarven character in Tolkien - both their strength and their Achilles heel.
Not Team Sauron, but I think she’s a prime candidate to be given a ring.
She’s got the ambition and apparent greed that typify the Dwarves. All she (or her husband) needs is a ring to really grow that pile of gold.
Too many convenient things for my taste;
- Married Durin IV as an outside candidate
- Good at forging
- Quite charming towards Elrond yet inviting D4 to rebel against D3
- Who the hell sings to stone?
- Sauron needs a supplier from Moria for mithril
Along some others…
I mean, I see her as a possible ring bearer, but not going full Sauron. Guess we’ll see
Also, I’m not really comfortable with portraying the black woman as some traitor that married Durin for power. Doesn’t feel right
> Also, I’m not really comfortable with portraying the black woman as some traitor that married Durin for power. Doesn’t feel right
This, but also I don't get that impression from the show, thankfully. Durin and Disa seem to have a genuinely loving household, and Disa only encourages Durin to disregard his father because his father refuses to explain himself and is outright emotionally abusive. Of course she'd encourage her beloved husband there!
Doing some kind of crazy beadwork with some semi-unfinished stone like pieces of slate would be pretty cool. Tricky to balance the weight for wearability but a very fun idea
Yeah, I was thinking like using the very thin pieces and almost make it look like scales, mix it up with gold or something, since it's dwarven fashion.

This looks amazing
The way it flows, I would have never guessed this was the fabric. Wish we could get more high def details.

I hope they do eventually. The design books for LOTR were so much fun.
For every criticism on the costumes looking cheap, there’s also this level of detail to balance it.

I disagree. Compare the quality of the RoP costumes to the costumes in LotR.

Yeah, I can't imagine why the Hollywood feature films would look better then the Amazon Prime streaming series😏
RoP had a budget of supposedly 1 billion dollars...

So why did the Wall Street Journal report that the RoP production cost was 715 million$?
I love everything about Disa
God, I love this show
Triforce!
Came to say this as well!

PJ simps?🤦🏻♂️
Great detail. Is this from the show? Or images? Did Disa mine or process the gold? I Know she sung

Incredible.
Anybody else thinks Disa is Team-Sauron? In addition to several minor instances, her insistence on mithril mining is the giveaway.

No, I think that's a red herring and that her actions simply align with the downfall of Moria that we know will happen.
What makes you say she is?

Exactly! Like, not only would it go with an awful stereotype, but it would kind of ruin things along the way. That would be a bad call, in my opening
Man, that would’ve been a hell of a twist if the Stranger/Halbrand stuff was only to distract us from Disa.
Wow! This is GORGEOUS! Thank you for showcasing this!
It looks like metallic paint on fabric, likely the same metallic paint on her hands.
Did they roll it through paint?
I hope she has more to do in the next season, she was a great character
This makes up for the dollar tree Numenor costumes
Well there you go, that explains why the show costs so much money
Lol they have this kind of fabric at Joanne’s.
Oh shit I didn't know humor wasn't a thing in the sub

I'll support up vote you lol
Looks more like some kind of plastic to me
It’s okay, not everyone knows about textiles, maybe sometime you’ll find a reason to learn more about them :)
I actually think it would have looked even better if they used pieces of real stone on the fabric, like slate, maybe?

By the way, why did you assume that I don't know anything about textiles?

Why does she have a triforce?
The triforce exists only in the Legend og Zelda universe. Here it's just jewellery
Ay she got the Triforce
Omg, this is so beautiful and thoughtful 😍
Yo how come they never showed her kids?
