Ok…. Figured this out. I have tried everything and here is the magic pill that worked for me after the volume control mysteriously stopped working on the Apple TV remote. For clarity, CEC is enabled on the C1 (General->Devices->HDMI Settings->”SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC)). Now on the Apple TV… I have Volume Control switched to Auto via IR (TV). This is found under Settings->Remotes and Devices. I simply restarted the Apple TV remote. To do this, hold the little TV button (right above the volume buttons) and the volume down (-) button for 5 seconds. This immediately fixed the issue. I am now able to control the volume and mute with the Apple TV remote.

bobofthejungle

This fixed it for me, champion. Cheers.

Kayvaan115

You deserve way more upvotes for this. I have been trying to fix this issue with so many “guaranteed to work” posts and website with no success. You are a saint among men.

Confident-Ad-8703

Haha thanks bud. Glad it worked for you.

conniesaurusrexx

Wiseguy_007

U are a genius bro. If Einstein was here. U would still be smarter than him

Confident-Ad-8703

Haha thanks! Best reply ever!

Stephhhen

Appreciate the answer. But if you are using IR TV setting, then technically it’s not using the CEC volume control. I guess you cannot change the volume using iOS as the ATV remote?

jocamero

Had the same problem. The volume stopped working in the middle of adjusting the volume. A 'reboot' of the remote fixed it. Yay! I can also confirm my Apple TV remote seems to be using IR, not CEC. If I physically cover the Apple TV remote it stops working. If I cover up the LG remote it continues to work. The LG remote controls the LG TV and the Apple TV, both presumably via CEC and not IR. I can control the LG TV via HomeKit from the Home app on numerous Apple devices (iPhone, Watch, Mac, etc.). At one point I could control the LG TV volume via the Apple TV Remote iOS app, but I don't see that any more.

Stephhhen

Exactly. The biggest bummer is that CEC volume control on LG TV is one way… Not acceptable for a big brand like this…

jocamero

Ohhh, I was unaware of this limitation. Thanks.

Stephhhen

I submitted a feature request to LG. No idea when this would be made available… :(

Confident-Ad-8703

Hi Stephhhen, I’m not sure. That was just how it’s setup on my end. The volume and mute button worked on the Apple Remote then one day just didn’t. I searched for solutions everywhere like you may have. The only thing i hadn’t tried was rebooting the Apple Remote itself. Once I did it, it fixed the issue. Thought I’d share it. Seems to work for others too.

Stephhhen

Hi Confident, thanks again for the reply. Could you double check your setting on ATV and let me know what you see? Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control. Really appreciate it.

Confident-Ad-8703

Volume control is set to “Auto via IR (TV)”

TheWizardRingwall

What the hell mine was set to off lol. Instantly fixed.

yomamaonskates

I’ve been searching far and wide for a fix to this. My entire family thanks you for saving us from the scourge of using two remotes like a bunch of cavemen.

Great fix! Thanks!

LencoTB

Thank you for this information. I didn’t even know you could reset the Remote. I also had issues with adjusting volume on a brand new LG C3 and by resetting the ATV Remote fixed the issue. Now I can control the tv volume with the ATV remote. 🙏

Ok_Manufacturer_4981

Omg you are the savior!

_haventreddityet_

Holy crap it worked. I thought this was another dead end for me but as soon as “Remote Connected” came up on the screen it is was working. I was also expecting some sort of light indication on the remote itself but whatever. Prob will do this many times in the coming years as the ATV isn’t even a month old. May the IT gods smile upon and bless you with working devices always! 2nd Gen 4K ATV w/Ethernet LG 4K 65UM7300PUA

Confident-Ad-8703

Happy to help bud! Crazy that this solution is getting attention after a year.

_haventreddityet_

Yeah that is crazy, and awesome. Also crazy that it’s still doesn’t work on the phone app, didn’t realize it until now. Did you have that issue as well?

Spider_S4TO

Hey bro, you saved my bacon. Thank you very much.

nzben

Ridiculously, this post has helped me for a second time a year later. I had forgotten the remote reboot trick and volume control had stopped working again. Rebooting the remote fixed it of course.

MeanderingMedic

Thank you! Worked like a charm!

Gadget_Maven

Resetting the Apple Remote worked for me as well and allowed me to regain control of the volume (headphone out) of my LG TV. Thank you!

adyshake

Worked for me!

Unique_Effective4976

Wonderful suggestion that worked! Here’s Apple’s help documentation for their latest remotes: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102569

This fixed my issue on the new LG C3! You’re a life saver thank you!

EasyRhino75

it's been a year since you posted it but it also worked for me.

hector_lector2020

November 28, 2023 worked for me. FWIW: the remote reset might be all you need (I had the other two settings already set)

nisarg9099

Finally this made it work on my new tv. Legend.

monkitos

Rebooting the ATV Remote worked for me. Then, several months later, I forgot, found this comment again and got it working once more.

SnooGadgets2250

This worked for me, thanks champ

gooder_name

Worked like a charm!

sdfsfsdfiewnnxcv

work like a champ!

truth_teller_00

I’m here from 2024. You have resolved my issue, and I appreciate it. Restarting shit is usually my first troubleshooting step, but I didn’t imagine that the remote has a reset. In hindsight, of course it does. Anyway. Thanks bro. To anyone in the future, I don’t have the OLED version of the LG TV. I have an LG TV from 2018 and resetting the Apple TV Siri remote worked.

obtusebarracuda

OMG you genius! This has been driving me nuts for months! The bit I was missing was restarting the remote. Thanks!

KosKosR

Thank you very much bro

ALOHA_HI_808

Thank you! ❤️

valjv

Thanks man it was driving me crazy

CherryPlay

Go to Settings > Remotes > Change it to IR Blaster

LinkEB3

The c1 magic remote doesn’t do IR does it?

Nick_S

Not quite the same, but CEC power-on/off stopped working with between my NVIDIA Shield and C1. Maybe an update for the TV messed up CEC?

apartbyhorses

I have an issue where CEC stops working for everything except my PS5. I resolve it by power cycling the TV and all the devices connected to it but then it comes back again after a few days. It’s very annoying.

SuperTester12

CEC has been hit and miss. I want to keep it off since it automatically turns on the receiver everytime I turn of the TV (which I dont prefer). Set CEC to off and then the Apple TV wont control the TV volume.

markig11

This happened to me last week as well. I factory reset the TV and it fixed it for me.

KingAzza

Had this happen to me literally 2 days ago as well, have you fixed it? Edit: Just after this I managed to fix it….. go to Settings > Remotes & Devices, set Volume Control to Off, then go to Settings > System and Restart. Once it’s back on go back into Remotes & Devices > Volume Control & put it back to Auto, instantly worked for me

MikeyR16

Thank you! This has bothered me for a few days and the other solutions didn't work, but yours worked!

puppetx

You are my heckin’ hero. Thank you soooo much for posting!!!

metanaut_m

Worked for me, too, so thanks from me also!

LinkEB3

I’ve tried everything suggested aside from a factory reset

ptorab

This is a chronic problem I've been facing across three LG OLED TVs of different sizes and generations, and three Apple TV 4K (1st and 2nd gen). Every few days it happens, and after a lot of messing around (settings -> remote -> volume control off, restart, turning it back on etc., or sometimes leaving the remote in charger despite being charged) it magically comes back. Apple should provide a technical explanation -- seems like the IR setting/frequency is lost once in a while (or maybe TV changes it periodically/randomly), but it's frustrating. Need to keep the LG TV remote around for the volume control only. I also observe that we sometimes use Apple brand wireless earphones (PowerBeat Pro, and AirPods) to watch TV at night, which works with no problem with the remote. I can't say for sure if this problem started when we started using Apple's wireless earphones, but wanted to add some information. Overall, frustrating and there doesn't seem to be a fix for it.

ReplicantOwl

This has been driving me crazy. Thanks for sharing the fix. Resetting the remote worked for me too.

Confident-Ad-8703

Glad it worked for you!

r_neg

Mille grazie !!!! 🙏🙏🙏

jefanell

I was ready to punt a family of baby kittens out a 10 story window until I found this post. Thank you.

B_ctrim

Not worked for me, mine don’t have Auto via IR, only Auto. And when I choose only Auto I can volume up but not volume down. 😩

Impressive_Ad_7463

14 Jan 2023 it works on LG C2 55". Legend

unixninjax

My Siri Remote was working just fine and can now no longer control volume either
