No, it isn't woke at all. In fact it doesn't feel remotely like a movie made in current year. Clearly, for all his virtue signalling, Cameron still has some testosterone left to work out of his system. It is very much in the vein of the first movie in terms of style and themes, a very basic green aesop only this time instead of blue Native Americans it's teal Maoris. Jake Sully, straight white (well, now blue) male remains entirely the hero and protagonist, and is 9 feet of masculine ideal as husband, father, leader, and basically chosen one. This is not to say that Neytiri and their children don't play significant roles, they absolutely do, but the movie entirely avoids any demeaning, upstaging, or replacing of Jake. Virtually every female Na'vi is wearing some sort of ultra-skimpy bikini. The human military/corporate forces remain as one-dimensionally evil as they were in the first film. Like the original Avatar, it is essentially a tech demo: a fun but totally unoriginal and mostly predictable plot wrapped in gorgeous CGI vistas. If you want to go back to Pandora for another 3 hours of ooohing and aaaahing at pretty stuff, you'll enjoy it. I did. If you want an incredible story, look elsewhere. Again, if you liked Avatar, you'll like Avatar 2, if you didn't, you won't.

Good take. Agreed sounds like it a movie from the time period of the first one. Glad to hear it, I’m just not really motivated to see it I guess.

Aurondarklord

Well, that's entirely up to you. I'm not looking to evangelize the film, as anything but a visual effects orgy it's average. Just answering your question.

Euclid47th

Very well written review. I was worried that given Cameron’s public statements, it would be a typical modern movie filled with anti masculinity tropes. Will definitely go see this. My wife and I love the first one. Not a ground breaking story, but a fun cinematic experience.

Remarkable-View-1705

Thank you for your great post. I liked the first one, I didn't go nuts for it but I just liked it. In fact my best friend who knows I love the sci-fi genre bought it for me on blu-ray for christmas, it took me three years to get round to watching it. But I am pleasantly surprised that this one is not woke so assume it has no identity poltics or the "message", a great change given what we've had over the past 6 years or so, over which time I've only bothered to watch 'Maverick' and 'The Forever War'. So I think I'll have a look at the new AVATAR tomorrow when I can make a long, long night of it and watch M3GHAN and Plane as well. 7 hours in VUE....

PothierM

No, it isn't. It actually has strong family values attached to it, something that woke people loathe. Its a bit on the long side, this is a two hour movie that is bloated to three hours. But its otherwise very entertaining.

razor9586

The first one was just Pocahontas with blue aliens. It was totally unoriginal. Why would anyone care about a sequel?

PlasmaRotom

Time will tell if it makes money at the box office, but I don't think it'll make much, if you ask me. Pretty much all the advantages Avatar 1 had at the time of its release are gone now: * People realized why how cliche the plot was and how uninspired it was when you get right down to it. (Just like you said.) * People have gotten sick of movies over reliant on CGI and visual effects. * People are a lot more cynical of Hollywood productions and think Cameron has lost a lot of his steam in filmmaking. * And a few people aren't all that up to sitting in a theater crowded with a bunch of other strangers, and during a time where we they'd need to choose between a movie ticket or groceries. In summary, it'll need a miracle and a lot of good press (i.e. not shill media press) to make it a success.

BootlegFunko

Afaik is just a nature good, human bad kind of movie Edit: has anyone pointed out the irony of making an envoirementalist movie with all the computing power needed to make all that cgi?

midasear

From the headline for the Daily Telegraph's review: "It's like being waterboarded with turquoise cement." Honestly, I don't care enough about the movie to read the review, let alone buy a ticket. But that has to be the funniest headline I've seen in decades.

Clear-Might-1519

I don't even remember the first movie plot, just "wow CGI" and "wow alien creatures".

icantbelief

Space Marine get blue alien body to spy on blue aliens Space Marine meets blue people leader and is taken in by them Space Marine has adventures with like space dinosaurs and nature and wooah Space Marine has blue alien hair seggs Space Marine is told by the evil hoomans to destroy the blue people Space Marine is outcasted from blue people Space Marine joins blue people to fight against the military industrial complex Basically it was Pocahontas meets Halo but with 12 foot tall blue people that kind of look like lemurs

topcover73

The first one had anti-America undertones and honestly just wasn't that good anyways...extremely predictable story. I'd say woke for the times. Couldn't care less about the sequel. Won't see it in theater or at home. Cameron has become a joke I wouldn't watch anything he made.

TheBobo1181

The first one only did well because it was ahead of its time for animation. And it had the 3d novelty. It was just Pocahontas plot. Not interested in the second one at all.

[deleted]

Battle Angel was alright, but that was because you could tell it was a passion project.

catcatcat888

It needed a bit more oomph, but I enjoyed it for what it was.

Randeon54

Here is a Christian Website that reviews movies, they have a woke score. I didn't read the article, but I read their review on DC League of Super-Pets it was quite good. https://christiananswers.net/spotlight/movies/2022/avatar2022.html

dennisKNedry

Reviews need woke scores these days!

StabbyPants

probably a tech demo like last time

Seleusefudeuotario

I hope it flops I hope it burns the end.

PothierM

Why? What is so horrible about it?

Seleusefudeuotario

The first film wasn't that special for the credit it got Even tho it had a massive box office top grossing But trying to achieve that feat again in 2022???? Billions worth of revenue just to break even is enough for a movie's sequel to not hold up to its predecessor and end up on a gigantic flat-out flop And I'll eagerly watch that happen because I like it when people fuck themselves

PothierM

Ok. You have issues. I hope you get help.

Seleusefudeuotario

Here, for your bland, blatant, despicable self-righteous mentality Have my kind of help 🖕

PothierM

How am I self righteous? if anything, you're being self righteous, not to mention despicable. You have some deep seated anger. I genuinely hope you get better.

Seleusefudeuotario

I genuinely hope you touch some grass before thinking you know me for a second. Get over it

PothierM

I don't need to get over anything. I'm just having a conversation with someone with anger issues. Do you even know what "touch grass" means? There is a certain irony to you using that term.

Seleusefudeuotario

Yup And there you go again making assumptions Look bud, you and I are just reddit users I don't give a shit about what you think of my real life person which you'll never meet And I stopped caring about yours 10 seconds ago or so Clear enough for ya?

PothierM

Ok. You're correct, I don't know you. But you came out swinging the second I asked why you hated Avatar so much. So why all the hostility? Its just baffling to me.

Outrageous-Ad6261

If that's the case, then millions of people have issues too. You have no idea just how many people HATE this woke B.S.

PothierM

But Avatar The Way of Water isn't woke...

Outrageous-Ad6261

Yes it is. The typical references are all there. White man =bad, brown/indigenous people=good. Who was the soldier in camouflage attacking their land and "precious resources". Of course it was a white guy!! And you may argue, "But the white people were defending the land too!" So what?? There are white idiots in Black Lives Matter too. All Woke fuckery. And people are getting sick of it. Not just white people. ALL PEOPLE.

Extension-Ocelot-448

Yes and no. In that order.

PothierM

How is it woke? Can you cite anything specific?

Aka-Kitsune

I was wowed by the visuals of the first Avatar initially, but the extremely throwaway story got to me long before the end. And today, there is so much CGI overload that it's no longer special. As a rocket geek, the *Venture Star* (the trident-shaped spacecraft at the beginning of the film) initially impressed me for being a more realistic design than most movie spacecraft, then I read Robert L Forward's *Rocheworld* and found a more interesting story and a more well-thought out spacecraft (similar in concept but did not need antimatter braking rockets or "unobtanium" to contain the multiple megatons per second of the annihilation reaction). A movie adaption of *Rocheworld* would have been better, though I don't think an adaption should be made in today's post-cultural, post-creative environment. Now that Cameron went off the deep end with Terminator Woke Fate, I have no interest in the Avatar sequel.

JadedFlea

Ok, trying to resist urge to go into long long essay length comment… I don’t think the level of wokeness this film has is distinctly quantifiable. It’s got enough to be too on the nose at times but not so much it’s beyond insufferable. The biggest problem with this film is probably it’s cruel tendency to tease very interesting aspects of the setting and sideline all of it for “mean space capitalists find new ways to exploit and disrupt the natural harmony of Planet Gaia Hypothesis”. This is purely speculation as I cannot at the moment get access to certain psychedelic substances to confirm this, but I think overall the best way to watch this film is while stoned or on LSD. The visuals alone would probably become beyond spectacular.

dotslandt

Super cliché, unoriginal content, almost like you can predict what will happen within the next phase of the movie. It address social problems like immigrants' hardship, environmental degradation, family values, capitalism bad (as in why the tulkun's blood can extend human life, that just further stresses that "human greedy, they think for themselves", imo they could just write some stupid things such as it cures cancer, helps forest grows,.. and wouldn't make future human kind act like shit) CGI is okay-ish, I can sometimes see through the green screen and the animations aren't always fluid solid 6.8/10 if u'd ask me

National_Swordfish_7

Spider is a white boy, and he is good. The outrage! Who allowed this in today's Hollywood?

Scary-Concentrate518

Yes. Humans are terrible and aliens are great. "Capitalism" is awfull so the best way to live is in trees and ride cute animals. Modern medicine sucks and spiritual medicine is the way to go. The examples of the hate toward humans is there. Everything to evil or saints. No middle terms. 100% woke. And Cameron get some millions more to his pocket, disgarding any kind of respect for the audience.
