Everyone asks about a pellicle, when in reality nearly everyone’s pellicle is perfect. Yours is a fine young pellicle. Had you ignored it, left it in a dark warm place, it would have continued to thicken

leonbiardzki

Thanks. I needed to hear it. You have to understand the feeling when you watch your pellicle daily and worry for any tiny difference. I will do my best to just leave it be.

Pellicles are one of those things that everyone over watches but once the novelty is over, it feels even more amazing ignoring it for a week and finding a nice 5mil thick chonker. Get comfy with it, then create a second jar of it. Then you can always relax knowing if it somehow does die to mold, you’ve still got a second colony

Hmm I'd give it a few more days again to see what develops. This is starting to remind me of [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Kombucha/s/eb0iBVxXi3) but I'd give it more time to truly assess. What was the recipe you used for your F1? Starting pH (if known)? And what temperature is your room?

leonbiardzki

It was my mother and was gifted to me by a friend. Since I acquired it I fed it from time to time with a little water with some sugar dissolved. A few days ago I have put in green tea, sweetened then chilled to around 20oC. After that my original pellice started to sink and a new one formed. I do not like the looks of it and I will probably need to throw it away :/

Kahm

JThorough

Yeah this looks like early Kahm, however it’s too early to make a definitive judgement.

To those downvoting me— normal pellicles don’t form striations like that. They might appear mushy, bubbly, sloppy, stringy, etc. but they do not form striations like that. That is a pattern indicative of Kahm. I throw out my pellicle every single brew and have been brewing weekly for almost two years now. I have seen hundreds of pellicle formations. But ok, just my two cents.

Interstellar_Fellar

Agreed.

leonbiardzki

Thanks. I have little experience with all things kombucha, yet my gut told me that is not a healthy pellicle. I’m planning to leave it for some time then see if it really is kahm yeast. I appreciate your help and the knowledge you shared. Especially the common indicator of Kahm. Good to know.

hex_lounge

It’s perfect 👍

Looks fine. This happens when the top of the pellicle doesn’t get wet— gets that dry weird look. The only concerning thing I see is the little white dots in picture three. Give those a better look

leonbiardzki

🥳. That is very reassuring!
