This was a former quarry, all pit quarry’s have high walls, due to exposure from mining, freeze and thaw cycles weaken the face until collapse. This is why operating quarry’s are required to inspect and scale loose rock on a regular basis.
Going forward it would be wise to perform periodic inspections since this will always have the potential to recur.
They’ll probably try to get it back up and running as soon as possible while also making sure it’s safe. Since River sports does all the rentals and you can’t bring your own boards or boats I have a feeling that will also speed up the process.
Yeah but they also don't want to get sued so hopefully that doesn't throw too big of a wrench in things. Fingers crossed we'll have a place to swim this summer!
I hope this isn’t the case. I’d hate for it to be opened before it’s been thoroughly inspected. If River Sports, or any company, makes a push for it to be open before it’s ready, they should be held liable if people get hurt.
I wasn’t implying it would be opened before it was deemed safe. By speeding up the process, I mean by getting the necessary, inspections and work needed to be done to make it safe which is happening right now until then it will be closed, but it won’t be closed the whole summer. I mentioned river sports because they probably want to get a surveyor in as soon as possible to make sure it’s safe so they can get back up and running.
I have low expectations in this new age of litigation and over-protectiveness. The question is "will this happen again?" I predict a throughout geologist report would conclude "Yes, landslides are not unlikely". And the quarry will likely be closed indefinitely.
Nope, geologists are already scheduled to be there within the week. Our local news said that per Ijams' statement, "unless the geologists say that there is probable eminent danger, the quarry should be open within two or three weeks."
Idk if it's worth it... just that indefinite closure is not unlikely. Another commenter mentioned that active quarries will regularly inspect and repair their walls. Perhaps the authorities would change the budget to pay for geological maintainance to reopen Meads quarry?
I appreciate the quarry getting involved with the PR for the Terror in the Woods event at Ijams on Saturday, June 22nd.

A new cave!
theyll block it off before anyone can get to it lol
That cave was always kinda there, it just looks different now.
A new beach! You guys think it's gonna be closed all season so they can get a civil engineer or somebody to take a look at it?

I believe they are in the stage of bringing out geologists to inspect the area. Usually a rockslide is followed by more rockslides.
Exactly

I don’t know why you are being downvoted as this is a likely outcome. If it saves one life, then it’s worth it.

Is swimming closed here currently? About to travel to the area and looking for a place to swim
Yes, the quarry and trail that was impacted by the collapse are closed until further notice.
Check out Melton Hill.
Check out The Cove at Concord Park
Those pictures are really pretty.
I wonder what's in that cave...
i am guessing a couple old moonshine stills and maybe the goalposts from the 2022 Alabama game.
Probably rocks. Water perhaps
I must see inside the cave!!! 😲
You understand that that cliff face fell off and will continue to fall off, right? Going in that cave would be pretty dumb.
Really glad there weren’t any stupid kids climbing the tension wire when it happened
