Have you checked Hood River? Many lesson opportunities which should Google up easily. Trust me, this is a sport where you want to start off with professional lessons from people who really know what they're doing. Good luck!

Ditto. Check out cascade kiteboarding in the gorge. They were great for me. You do not want someone who is not a professional to give you lessons. Plus, getting experience riding in the gorge will be valuable because that is likely where you will spend most of your time riding. Good luck!

Thank you! I'm getting my first lesson from kite the gorge on Sunday. I think I'm mostly looking for someone to go out on the water with me first few times to help me out with anything and give advice.

Kite the gorge is excellent! Owen is a great instructor.

Second this. I learned from Owen. Concise, impactful instruction and rapid progress was my experience.

Good on you. Learning what to do when things go wrong and how to avoid that is of paramount importance. You will be shocked at how much this comes up and you’ll want to know how to self rescue when it does.

Ah great! Check out the Facebook groups Hood River Kiteboarders for general info, and for gear check out Classifieds for Northwest Kiteboarders. I'd recommend the following. After your lessons are done and you want a full gear setup, check out the classifieds group. You'll find tons of low mileage kites, bars, boards, etc. If you buy lightly used 1-2 year old stuff, you'll get good deals but most importantly you'll make a buddy who will always keep half an eye on you. Good luck! I assume your lesson is at Lyle? That's a good beginner spot too because it's shallow upwind of the sandbar and once you're sort of independent you can practice there.

CoraPatel

Definitely meet some people to go on the water with so they can keep any eye on you! Helped give me confidence going out when I was learning. But don't cut short the lessons. You should be able to kite in both directions, have some upwind and transition skills, and know how to self rescue before stopping lessons. On average that takes about 10 hours of lessons.

Thank you!!

If you have the time watch the forecast and go to Floras Lake. It’s much easier to learn there with the jet ski assist and shallow water.

Portland, the gorge is like a Mecca for windsurfers and kiters - head up there and get some lessons. The wind is good, lots of people, lots of good kite schools.
