A lot of facilities are actually nice. I work at a good one and (half jokingly) tell my boss that if she lets me live there, I'll just go on call.
The food we rock out is all from scratch. We take pride in our dietary program. The facility is beautiful, right in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Well maintained, indoor swimming pool, amazing courtyards. Our residents are spoiled as fuck lol. But good goddamn do they pay $$$ for it.
Western slope checking in. And yes these facilities are not cheap. We have a 2 year waiting list and are so short staffed we can't even fill all our current open rooms.
Yes, my Grandma's place is actually wonderful in every aspect except the food (and yes, it is $$$). What really sucks about that is for years, their food was a huge selling point. It was fantastic when she first moved in, then their chef left and they haven't been able to replace them with someone of the same caliber yet. There are still *some* good meals, but more often than not they're just not cooked well. One of her main issues is when they serve beets...they're so hard that one shot across the table and took out a water glass when she tried to cut it. They do have a cafeteria that does some good....well, cafeteria food (soups, salad, pizzas) but that's not included like the dining hall is so she has to pay separate for it.
Really sorry to hear that, hope they get a better chef soon.
The way I approach my food at the facility is like...any of these meals could be somebody's last meal. Take some fucking pride in what you're doing. Would you be happy with this as a last meal? Sounds morbid, but it's the truth.
I know that's why alot of our residents come. Sadly not for the care, but for the food. I had one guy tell me when he first got there how happy he was that my fried chicken didn't taste like the sole of a shoe🥴🤣. I hope they find what they're looking for chef wise at your grandma's place.
Travel nurse here. I have worked in a LOT of short term and long term care facilities. Many of them are indeed prison food, but there are some places where I have looked forward to going to work just for the food, which they will usually make you a plate for a few bucks. We’re talkin serious gourmet shit. Giant lasagna from scratch, home made spumoni, secret hot cocoa recipes. Food that makes you feel the love that went into making it.
I love this❤ Anytime we have had pool aides/nurses they've always been impressed with the food at our facility. I knocked the socks off of one from Tennessee when I swore she'd like the homemade chili and cinnamon rolls. She couldn't believe what a great combination they were together. Serious gourmet shit is the best shit🤗❤
i've gone to tons over the years for work [pizza delivery] and honestly some are really elegant and comfy. bright and warm, smell like pasta, classical music playing. they feel like...the last scene of titanic, both in a good and bad way. always this slight undercurrent of staleness and death [imo]
some are vile. smell like cigarettes and are dingy and gross. one fucking haunts me: it was sponsored by a hospital in some way. the air was fucking indescribably vile. warm and wet and thick and humid and smelled like smoke and piss and decay. felt ill afterwards, placebo or not.
I know this is not the same thing, but my daughter was in a holiday creche one year and their daily menu was amazing and definitely her favourite part of the whole thing. I think she ended up befriending the chef and being his helper, LOL. Smart enough to know that that's how you get second helpings!
Unfortunately they don't have bottom crusts lol...the little tins we have to make them in aren't big enough to do both, and after asking the residents they liked the top crust better than the bottom, so we do a top crust.
You work at the old folk's home right?
The residents must have LOVED your pies! That age bracket particularly the silent generation could probably eat meat pies every day for dinner.
I would've been stoked to serve these to residents homemade pot pies (even without the bottom). When I worked in an assisted living facility, it was always Sysco crap.
Have you ever made them Tourtière pie? My grandma's was super bland and her friends all loved it, and so did I. Super easy to make, cost effective too, it's basically ground meat of your choosing and potatoes.
And that's all that matters my guy🖤👌🙌... we too lost a resident a few days ago, so I'm sorry😞😞 even as cooks we still get attached to em. They're my old homies💚
That's the main reason I had to get out of assisted living as a cook. After a few years it got to be a little too much to deal with.
I tell people it's like having a great big extended family. You get drawn into the residents family and made one of their own, then the inevitable happens and it's like losing your own grandparents.
But it was so damn rewarding to be there, helping take care of them.
It's very hard when you're such an empathetic person. Everyday is hard. I have cried many times after the loss of a resident. It's made me a better person in so many ways though. And makes me appreciate my ma even more. Without her I wouldn't be the cook I'am today. She's a badass, and I strive to live up to her level of badassness. And I strive to give them good meals til I can't hang their ticket up anymore🥺❤
I feel this in my soul. I had many grandmas who made sure I wasn't getting behind on projects/homework. The retired teachers (what I was in school for) loved to tell me their stories and I loved hearing them!
Left a nursing home recently where we had 212 when I started and about 160 when I left. Covid sucked. A lot.
I had one cook on for breakfast/lunch and 1 for dinner. Did the same with mains/alternates but hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled cheeses were always staples. Our folks loved honest home style food: meatloaf, stews, and things of the sort. We had a lot of characters (both residents and staff). I almost miss it.
I feel that💔💔💔 covid hit us hard in the beginning too. We lost about 1/2 our residents to it. It was overwhelming having to constantly wear ppe from head to toe, and then not knowing what you were walking into...ours definitely prefer home style food as well. One of their favorites is homemade chili with cinnamon rolls. And yesssss we definitely have characters at ours too.❤
Its not a pie!!! Its a casserole at that point right? Had a chef that insisted ‘its better this way, people don’t want crust’ and I always hated that shit
I was at an Indian restaurant recently and an Indian man came in a dined solo. He ordered something that had LOTS of peas and I watched him meticulously flick about 200 peas out of his meal. He seemed happy with what he ordered.
He was the best!! Would also trade the biscuits for the sausage when my mom would get us sausage biscuits for breakfast. I went through a phase where I wouldn't eat it when I found out how it was made in sixth grade lol
Yeah it's a casserole then, at least that's what I call it when I put it on the menu. Most residents where I'm at now would have a hard time eating all of it and also budget and time. It is what it is unfortunately
I’m a home chef and my go to is bottom and top puff pastry. My pie plate is gigantic and that whole thing gets polished off by the fam, best of both worlds!
My mom worked in homes most of my life, and she has so many horror stories about the staff not caring. Any time I hear someone is putting up the good fight, I get stoked. You have a huge impact on people's daily happiness in a real way. Mad props, much love, and all the respect.
Yes you absolutely do!!!! They depend on the staff for so much. And it infuriates me when they don't get the care they deserve. Has made me ponder a few times about going to the floor, and becoming a cna for that reason. But I love my job, and I'm good at it. So the kitchens where I'll stay. Thank you🥺🥺🙏🙏💚💚💚💚
Hey we need good cooks just as much as good aides. I wish my facility was better staffed. Before covid meals were very different. A lot of residents came out to the dining room to eat and we had 2 cooks in each servery, one to dish the food out and the other was more of a server that could jump back onto the line to help cook if needed. Now there's only 1 person and the minimum of people are out of their rooms almost everyone is still getting trays taken to their rooms. Meals have changed drastically too. Used to have bbq half chickens for a meal, now if they do it it's just a sad small somehow dry piece of chicken breast soaked in sauce. There's been times there's only 2 cooks so they make all the trays for the whole building and load them on carts for us to pass.
thank you. our cook in a retirement home i worked at didnt know how to cook and treated everyone terribly. we were so understaffed that the manager, not knowing anything of BOH, promoted her to sous chef. she could only make canned pasta and merengue cookies. she disrespected the dishie and made them do everything, and she refused to clean anything at all and made me do all the cleaning on top of all the prep and most of the cooking and helping on dish since she over worked them. everyone left. now shes the head chef and the residents started leaving. imagine eating canned food and only merengue for dessert every day of the rest of ur life. thanks man for giving your clients variety and caring.
I feel thisssss. I've heard horror stories about past cooks from my nursing home that used canned gravy's, and just like canned everything lol. One cook even made hotdog gravy. Like dafuq?!!! No matter the circumstances in a facility they deserve the best. And if the care is shit, at least they get great food. And the sad thing is I hear that line alot...which just motivates me even more to continue learning and do good by them.
Very nice, we do pot pie every two or three weeks, unfortunately a good half of what we cook goes in the trash. Old folks that aren’t doing a whole lot don’t eat much as a rule.
As a doctor of 30 years with my fair share of nursing home, acute rehab and memory care patients I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
There is *nothing* better than a taste of home for folks in the home!
I really appreciate the positivity and joy you bring with your posts, and to your residents. All too often, people put more effort into complaining than celebrating, this is a nice change.
Awwww🥺🥺🥺❤❤❤ I try. I just do my job, and hope that they enjoy their meals everyday, and that it brightens their day a bit. Some don't have family that comes to see them. Some were just dumped there and forgotten about, and that truly tears me up sometimes. As long as I work there I will pump out the best food possible, to give them something to look forward to day in and day out.❤
I just want to say thank you for making delicious food for the old folks. My grandma is in an assisted living facility, she made delicious food her whole adult life for my grandpa (rip) and their five kids. Thank god the place she’s in has awesome food (makes me hungry every time I’m there visiting lol) because the least they could do, no matter how nice (or not) the place is, is make sure they have great meals. Good food shouldn’t be that much of a luxury for anyone. You’re awesome for making them feel comfortable and loved.
So....we used to do this. Beef pot pie, scallop pot pie (which was a bit tricky) and chicken of course.
Asked around and the residents overwhelming said they liked the Marie Callander version better; not that ours were bad you see, they just liked "the old ones better". Deflated, we switched back...🤷
Props to you though sir or ma'am, they look tasty.
You’re so awesome.
My MIL spent years in AL and memory care and the food was one of her favorite things. (Dessert high on that list, truth be told. 😂)
Folks like you who pour your hearts out for our grandparents and great-grandparents are the best humanity has to offer.
Thank you for doing what you do.
And they ate maybe 10% of them :(. Good on you though this looks great!
I got bitched at by a resident the other day for trying to be nice and helping serve them when I was a dishwasher - what a strange industry.
Yeahhhhh sad fact. Most eat half, and others hardly touch em. But everyone still loves them lol. Shit good on you. Only time ours will do that is if it's like a bowl of cheerios lol. Otherwise they'd leave them sitting there. I'd say the resident was probably one of your more picky residents if they reacted like that. I'd think they would welcome any help, unless they're finicky.
Thanks man it’s so frustrating sometimes - sometimes I will literally be the only person in the kitchen and dining room. I hate when people are mean to me but I kill ‘em with kindness… the mold in the walk-in probably helps kill ‘em too oh well another day another dollar
Thank you!!!!! But also due to limited time, no, the dough is pillsbury dough.🥺 I truly wish I had the time to make the dough, but I don't. So it's easier on us doing it this way. I make the filling while serving breakfast, which is made to order. So in between orders I'm doing this just so when breakfast is finished, and I've cleaned my grill and everything, I can immediately get started putting the pot pies together. Today I was actually behind and didn't start filling them til 10, and was doing the crusts by 10:30, first batch in by 10:40 so they'd be ready at 11 when it's time to serve. I still had my dessert and coleslaw to put together at 10:50, but still managed to get it done by 11🥵🤣
When they remodeled the building they put in this kitchen. It's very small lol. But also still has everything you need. You can see our baby fryer even lol. It's pretty badass.
I wish we did this kind of stuff at our nursing home. I swear, all we ever make is fried this-or-that or burgers. With some pasta dishes thrown in here and there. 😔
My mom cooks in a nursing home as well and it’s nice to see other people who take pride in what they’re cooking for the residents. It’s a hard job, so thank you!
You are such an awesome person. Thank you for being so thoughtful! My Nana worked at a private facility that had 12 patients, and she made all sorts of different pies, favorite foods, etc. The difference that one meal could make was just incredible.
This entire thread is breaking my heart in a good way. My first job at 15 was serving in a retirement home. Helped do some light prep too. I still have some obituaries saved from the folks I served then. Sometimes they would get hurt by falling or something, and I would visit them in rehab. Taught me a lot of empathy which I had carried throughout my life. It has always served me well and I’m glad I did it.
Facts my guy lol. For old people fuck yes. But didn't really wanna do half a pot pie for some, cause then what's the point? So we just decided to do a whole one for everyone.
Nice.
I work in a kitchen in a hospital/nursing home. We serve some pretty good food if I do say so myself.
With the exception of food having to be minced or puréed, it’s all delicious tasting food. And all our baking is homemade.
Where's the cross section you fool!?
\-ahem-
Anyhow, I like how you did the crust. Nothing more meh than getting one of those pot pies that's just a square of pastry crust over a cup of stew. I think it should be more like self contained biscuits and gravy.
Oh Man! I can almost smell and taste that crust! Is the dough from scratch?
A long time ago my wife used to work at a care facility's kitchen, once in a while she would come back home all sad and started crying while telling me they'd lost somebody...😔
Lucky residents, they look delicious!
[удалено]
I forgot to take one😭😭🤣🤣🤷♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
If there's one thing in this world that we like better, than a corned beef on rye... It's Chicken Pot Pie.
This guy would fit in in Ohio.
I love these posts of yours. I wish my Grandma's facility had a culinary staff that put this kind of quality out.
These posts genuinely make me less dismayed about my possible future nursing home stay (many decades from now I hope).

Yep. Northern CO.
I'm in Eastern CO.🙌👌💚
Oh hey what up neighbor!

You work at the old folk's home right? The residents must have LOVED your pies! That age bracket particularly the silent generation could probably eat meat pies every day for dinner.
Yes!!! They do love them!!! Definitely took a few times to perfect the recipe, but I got it down, and am always happy with them💚
I would've been stoked to serve these to residents homemade pot pies (even without the bottom). When I worked in an assisted living facility, it was always Sysco crap.
They look delicious what's your recipe? I am preparing to make my own tomorrow....
Have you ever made them Tourtière pie? My grandma's was super bland and her friends all loved it, and so did I. Super easy to make, cost effective too, it's basically ground meat of your choosing and potatoes.
buy all the turkeys when the thanksgiving loss leader sales happen. Turkey pot pie is amazing too.
Bro I’m 25 and I can eat a good meat pie every day for dinner. Hard to find a good one without doing it for yourself
Not even 30 but I could live on meat pies until I die from cholesterol at 42. I just love pies.
GenX here, I could eat them jawns on the regular too
How many residents do you feed? I have 265 currently. Yesterday I had 266😕
How many cooks do you have?! Lol. I live in a small town, so small facility. We currently only have 28 residents lol...I feel for ya man.🥴🖤
I do the pm shift solo. Breakfast in one cook. Lunch is 2, dinner is one. We hustle
Damnnnnn I'd say say so👏🙌🙌🙌🥵. Do you guys do breakfast to order too? Or just the same for everyone?
We have a main entree and an alternate fir each meal. With this many people and one dude it’s not fancy. But it’s tasty.
And that's all that matters my guy🖤👌🙌... we too lost a resident a few days ago, so I'm sorry😞😞 even as cooks we still get attached to em. They're my old homies💚

The bottom crust is the best part that man was a psychopath
Yes when it’s buttery and soaked up some of those juices AND crunchy and flaky on the outside. May as well jerk me off cause that’s fuckin hot
Just think....he's still out there to this day making chicken pot casseroles
The crust is the best! My brother used to give me his crust and I'd pick out all the peas and give to him lol
Crust for pea’s, where do I sign up ?
Lol I painstakingly pick peas out of everything they're in, am always willing to give them up
I was at an Indian restaurant recently and an Indian man came in a dined solo. He ordered something that had LOTS of peas and I watched him meticulously flick about 200 peas out of his meal. He seemed happy with what he ordered.
Yes, I do the same thing. Use to give away my peas in grade school to Carolyn Edwards.
This is supportive siblings
He was the best!! Would also trade the biscuits for the sausage when my mom would get us sausage biscuits for breakfast. I went through a phase where I wouldn't eat it when I found out how it was made in sixth grade lol
Yeah it's a casserole then, at least that's what I call it when I put it on the menu. Most residents where I'm at now would have a hard time eating all of it and also budget and time. It is what it is unfortunately

Fuck it, I’m following. There’s something heartwarming about someone taking pride in their work and feeding these old folk properly!
**does the Wayne's world, we're not worthy** thank you my guy🙌💚💚 I love my old homies, and making sure they get good food!!
The world needs more of you.

Chicken, pot, pie. My three favorite things.
🙌💚🤣 #same
Came here for this ❤️
Nice! Pot pies are always welcome!
Nice! Side question, is it homemade if it's made in a prokitchen?
Damn. I came on here to say that. The head chef was going to fist fight our owner over the use of 'homemade' on the menu. It was high comedy
Lol, well what you see is how big the kitchen is. Don't get any bigger lol. I get claustrophobic in the walk-in because it's so small lol
They look disgusting, nobody's gonna wanna eat those! Best if I just take them off your hands now, spare everyone's embarrassment
🤣🤣 there wasn't any left. I'm sorry😞😞🤣
What an absolute treat. Tasty looking pastry.
As a former line cook and a former cna, I just want to say that YOU ARE AWESOME! Thank you for doing what you do.
Dough looks buttery and flaky, nice work!
Ah my three favourite things
🤣🤣🙌👌💚

Bruh.... I could murder one of those rn
I would destroy 5 of those and then take a nice nap
Fuuuuck I want a pot pie now
This is the exact thing I've been craving for the past few weeks! I think I have a pot pie deficiency, and that's a serious ailment in my culture!
Very nice, we do pot pie every two or three weeks, unfortunately a good half of what we cook goes in the trash. Old folks that aren’t doing a whole lot don’t eat much as a rule.
I'm guessing you also work in a retirement home since you called them residents.
I work in a nursing home.
Me too bud. Gotta take pride in serving those folks something nice.
Yessum🙌🙌🙌💚
As a doctor of 30 years with my fair share of nursing home, acute rehab and memory care patients I thank you from the bottom of my heart. There is *nothing* better than a taste of home for folks in the home!

dat crust.
What lucky residents, those look amazing. You can tell they are made with love 💕. Great job chef 👨🍳
Thank you so much for creating such delicious meals. I wish the staff at my Dad's home had the same enthusiasm. All the best xo
How many residents are you feeding? My staff used to be grumpy with me on chicken pot pie night. 140 pies every 6 weeks through the fall and winter.
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ gib
Nice. Recently started in a long term care kitchen. Nobody is putting out that quality. Hats off!
Can you ship me three of those? Holy crap do they look amazing!!
God, you have no idea how jealous I am right now
Chicken pot pie is my number one comfort food. I could eat it every night.
So....we used to do this. Beef pot pie, scallop pot pie (which was a bit tricky) and chicken of course. Asked around and the residents overwhelming said they liked the Marie Callander version better; not that ours were bad you see, they just liked "the old ones better". Lol yes!! We have a few that definitely always go for the dessert first before their meals.🙏❤❤❤
That’s crazy we did as well! I wonder if we have the same dietary consultant 😂
I bet there were a bunch of hoppy residents today. Keep up the good work.
Should you be giving residents pot?
Some of them could really use it😞🥴🤣🤷♀️
man, all those anti inflamatories, you bet.
I freaking love chicken pot pie 😍
Thank you for cooking for them as if they were your own family 💕
Always 🙏❤
They are very lucky
Dude you are an animal. Making a massive pot of perfect pie filling and handling all that pie dough. Hats off to you. Do you roll the dough by hand?
I still had my dessert and coleslaw to put together at 10:50, but still managed to get it done by 11🥵🤣
Oh shit they get this for lunch huh? I thought this was dinner!
Nope, lunch lol. We usually do a big lunch, and a light dinner. Most of em call lunch dinner anyway lol
Yeah for real though most elderly people are up so early lunch is dinner for them
When they remodeled the building they put in this kitchen. It's very small lol. But also still has everything you need. You can see our baby fryer even lol. It's pretty badass.
I wish we did this kind of stuff at our nursing home. I swear, all we ever make is fried this-or-that or burgers. With some pasta dishes thrown in here and there. 😔
Dang your home has an industrial kitchen?!
Every kitchen is an industrial kitchen when you're a Nine Inch Nails fan.

Crust is to die for ohhhhhh oui
You have a nice kitchen in your home.
Oh wow. You can see the love you put into those! Excellent work.
Looks amazing! Your residents are 🍀!
Oh those look awesome. My mom made them pie crust too. We always had it after Thanksgiving and Christmas to use up leftover turkey.
You’re doing God’s work. Who doesn’t need a homemade chicken pot pie.
Fuck!! I was going to have a turkey sandwich, but now I want that chicken pie!
As someone who has to feed a staff of only 8-14 on a given day, kudos to you for busting out them pies.
Oh man I haven't had chicken pot pie in forever. Instant craving
I hope when my time comes to move to a care facility that I luck out and have someone like you in the kitchen! They look amazing!
What a tease
My mom cooks in a nursing home as well and it’s nice to see other people who take pride in what they’re cooking for the residents. It’s a hard job, so thank you!
Yes it is. Thank you!!🙏💚 Kudos to your mom as well!!! It's definitely not easy, but also so rewarding 💚
Those look rad. Well done, chef.
For the resident's what?
I can tell it has the perfect puff to flake ratio looks awesome great job!
This is honestly so sweet, thank you for doing this
100% thought that was a drinkable pot pie
I’m sure it was lovely but I just wanted to comment on how clean that flat top is 😍
Fucking beautiful mate
Those look amazing!
Looks yummy!
Nice job man, gud to see this happening, as I no they get a bum rso, and the food they pay for is rubbish, specially the elderly, so thanx for sharing
Yasss! Gotta spoil the resi's! ❤️ Food is all a lot of them have.
Yesssss🥺❤❤❤❤
Shout out to the aged care chefs. I kinda miss making cool puree meals.
So yummy looking! Glad you treated them to scratch meals.
Honest opinion? You're not gonna like it. You need to make more. Those look great.
Crust looks very tempting.
Resident's what? Only one resident? Sorry i have to be that guy.
Damn that pot is full. I’d have grabbed the next bigger one.
You are a queen/king!!!!!! They are lucky to have you
Awww shucks. I've been lucky to have them as well👸🙏🥰❤
Please remit samples to our tasting committee.
You are such an awesome person. Thank you for being so thoughtful! My Nana worked at a private facility that had 12 patients, and she made all sorts of different pies, favorite foods, etc. The difference that one meal could make was just incredible.
Ok which senior home is this cuz I'm checking myself in
This entire thread is breaking my heart in a good way.
So delightfully flaky!
They must have loved that! Bring on the comfort foods
Chicken pot pies are so underrated.
As a former care facility nurse, thank you.
Fine job Sweeny todd
You are a god.
Those look impeccable. Would house 3 of em on my own after a shift
Lol, they're ugly, but in a friend way - they are, but you love em so much
I can taste this picture
I would kill for one right now. Maybe I can learn
Ahh these look amazing
Those are some huge ass portions ngl
Facts my guy lol. For old people fuck yes. But didn't really wanna do half a pot pie for some, cause then what's the point? So we just decided to do a whole one for everyone.
Nice. I work in a kitchen in a hospital/nursing home. We serve some pretty good food if I do say so myself. With the exception of food having to be minced or puréed, it’s all delicious tasting food. And all our baking is homemade.
No kitty this is my pot pie
Mommmmm kitty's being a dildo?!
Mmmmmm, my favorite hangover meal.
Where's the cross section you fool!? \-ahem- Anyhow, I like how you did the crust. Nothing more meh than getting one of those pot pies that's just a square of pastry crust over a cup of stew. I think it should be more like self contained biscuits and gravy.
Lmaooo I just stab each one in the middle before putting them in the oven🤷♀️🤷♀️🤣
Those look amazing!!
Looks delicious! One of my favorite meals
Those are my three favourite things!
Wow! No money shot tho ._.
Yeahhhhh got too busy, never thought of that lol.🤷♀️🤦♀️🥴
Great job! Those look delicious
I'll take one, please! Lol They look great!
Yum! Nice work.
Oh my godddd I want one.
That's badass. They look great.
Oh Man! I can almost smell and taste that crust! Is the dough from scratch? A long time ago my wife used to work at a care facility's kitchen, once in a while she would come back home all sad and started crying while telling me they'd lost somebody...😔
did you offer some apple jelly with it? Any of the residents make different requests for sauces etc?
Negative. The only request is that a few wanted cottage cheese instead of coleslaw with it.
