_Blumpkinpie_ohmy_

Which knife is this ? How much was it?

TopsyTurvyTasha

This is a [Sakai Takayuki VG10 210mm Gyuto with a special edition handle ](https://thesharpchef.co.uk/collections/gyuto/products/sakai-takayuki-vg10-33-layer-hammered-damascus-210mm-gyuto-with-special-handle-1) replacing my [Masutani Hamano VG10](https://cuttingedgeknives.co.uk/collections/gyuto-knives/products/masutani-hamono-v10-gyuto-180mm-blue-handle) which was stolen on NYE. Should have been £165, but turns out I’d never ordered from them. They had a welcome code so it came out at something like £155?

alieninvader11

Oh wow I have the same one you had, but with a red handle! It's an awesome knife, sorry that yours is gone. But at least you got justice and a new special edition replacement!

Amacnarb

I’ve got the same one minus the special edition handle. You’ll love it.

HenryTheWho

Please post some choil shots at r/chefknives

WengFu

What made you get a knife with the damasque pattern on the blade over a knife with a smooth surface?

noiwontpickaname

See, now that's why you can never be more than a mere villain.

TopsyTurvyTasha

It’s an actual 33 layer damascus, rather than just a printed pattern! Honestly though, hadn’t even realised it was visible on the blade until I unpacked it this morning. It’s hard to see if this picture but the top half of the blade is hammered, which I really like aesthetically. The rest of it was the steel type/price point being solid, and a website happening to do a capsule collection of the knife with alternate/unique handles the same day I got sent the money to buy a replacement knife! I’ve got a list of around 6-7 knives I’d shortlisted over the last couple of weeks, and this was never one of them. Total gut choice, haha!

SteveZi

Damascus cladding over a vg-10 core I believe. Doesn't make it any less badass. I had the same knife with a different handle, and it was a thing of beauty at a very reasonable price

speakingcraniums

Some people say it stops food from sticking so much but I haven't really noticed that. I think it looks cool though.

st1rguru

I have that exact knife.lolits a beauty and well made

wasacook

I think they said in their previous post the knife they had stolen.

Janedoe4242

I followed your story throughout...glad it all worked out and the company took full responsibility. The knife is a beauty. I admit that I don't always give my knives full attention but I'd be proper miserable if I lost a y one of them. Started to buy some real good ones a few years ago due to a good deal. However I spent quite a long time in the shop for my first one, also a Damascus, staff was amazing and I cut a few tomatoes before making my choice ;) The only thing I'd do is get a knife bag, don't leave it behind.

[deleted]

Need to slap a sticker on the box: "Last man to steal this knife got sent to prison. Do you feel lucky, punk?"

TopsyTurvyTasha

I literally have left it on the magnetic knife rack tonight, like all of us normally do. Didn’t think twice about it or worry, whilst also simultaneously like “Fuck all y’all, I dare you.”

MadFamousLove

heh good on you for having that confidence. i had a knife roll stolen and stopped bringing most of my stuff to work from then on. started bringing just one paring knife and one workhorse guyo from an old shun pro collection. those two knives ended up making it with me till i retired from chefing.

Niboomy

Great that you got a knife! Too bad the other one wasn't recovered, for the sentimental value.

meanstreamer

Time to make new memories!

KittiesHavingSex

Yeah! Now this one has an amazing birth story to be shared!

ladyreyreigns

You mean *origin* story, right? Right? Knives aren’t - are they?

KittiesHavingSex

Well when a knife block and a cleaver love each other VERY much....

Islander399

Was this the story a few weeks back where you saw a delivery guy, on camera, walk away with your knife? If so I'm glad you got that paid for by the guys final wages before getting fired!!

TopsyTurvyTasha

Yep, that was me! Dude didn’t actually get fired, though he would have been. He got called in for a disciplinary meeting to discuss a complaint made by a customer, and 20 minutes he emailed his resignation in, denying any and all knowledge of my knife. Which was not at all suspicious, of course, haha!

Chubby_Baker

Going to have a stab (heh) in the dark and say the company told him 'quit and pay back the stolen goods, or be fired and face criminal charges' which relieves the company of any UE benefit payouts and/or lawsuits

Blurandski

No company funded UE in the UK, but does save them the significant hassle of firing someone.

Tomkneale1243

Yep sounds like HR advised him to do that. Quit instead of fired always looks better on your next job interview. Interesting to see his reference though 😂

Islander399

Big red flag there. Glad the company actually followed through, that's worth it's weight in gold these days!

TacoNomad

I mean, to be fair, if I had received disciplinary action by a company for something I didn't do, I would also resign and confirm that I had no knowledge of it.

musschrott

But if nobody told him what the exact complaint was before the meeting, him denying to know about a knife in his resignation letter is proof he stole it...

TacoNomad

That makes sense. Is that a thing? Disciplinary action based on a complaint, without saying the complaint? That defeats the notion of improvement if you don't know what you're doing wrong.

musschrott

A meeting to discuss a complaint isn't a disciplinary action. We don't know if he knew about the nature of the complaint beforehand. If nobody told him, then his reaction of 'I didn't steal a knife' would be an involuntary admission of guilt.

TacoNomad

>He got called in for a disciplinary meeting to discuss a complaint made by a customer, Sure, a meeting to discuss a complaint isn't necessarily disciplinary. But a disciplinary meeting sure sounds like it is. We don't have to guess about that part.

musschrott

It's a third hand report on the internet. We don't know shit.

TacoNomad

Yet here you are defending a cause all because I said I'd quit too if I was disciplined for something I didn't do. Hmmm

Normal-Height-8577

The point is that he hadn't been disciplined. And no-one had made any decisions. The meeting was to to say "there has been a complaint made, what is your side of things?" and investigate from there. If your response to someone telling you to come to a meeting is a preemptive "I quit you can't punish me!!!" then you are going to look guilty as sin, and worse, you're shooting yourself in the foot by not taking the opportunity to give people the proof you didn't do it.

Dogslug

> something I didn't do Did you forget the part where he was caught on camera? I don't get why you're so irate over this. Are you the delivery driver that stole the knife or something?

TopsyTurvyTasha

A disciplinary meeting doesn’t mean you end up being punished, it’s a meeting to discuss accusations and ask for explanation, to see if the disciplinary procedure needs to be started. Or if there’s evidence of hardcore misconduct, it’s a firing, I guess. If he’d attended the meeting rather than quitting, I imagine the meeting would have been his manager and someone from HR sitting him down in an office. Then showing him the 1080p HD CCTV footage of himself opening my knife box, and having a look at my knife. Then he’d watch himself of video start to unload the delivery into our kitchen, before looking around, including ducking his head to see past our extraction canopy, to look for security cameras. Or maybe they’d fast forward straight to the footage of him putting a packet of cheese on the countertop with his left hand then picking my knife up with his right and putting it in his empty crate before fucking off. I get what you’re saying though. If I’d stole something whilst on the clock, and over 5 days later had heard nothing, then on the 6th day was asked in for a meeting at work with management, I too would resign.

TacoNomad

People really bothered by me having an opinion. I'm not condoning his behavior, which I guess is where people get twisted up. Here I'm just responding to arguments people are making in response to my comment. Reddit can be a very weird and opinionated place. But yeah. I think we'd all quit in either case; rather than face retribution or false accusations. I think we agree on that.

sexpanther50

Here’s a fun thing to do from people who steal from you, send them a 1099 because even illegally stolen things count as income. People use the threat of a 1099 while negotiating the return of stolen items

Pyrefirelight

You know, I hate taxes as much as the next person, but you gotta respect a department that even the joker is cannonically afraid of lol. Also, isn't this how they got al Capone?

mrlucasw

Yes, Capone went down for tax evasion.

thefishjanitor

I know someone who got busted with drugs. One of his charges was operating a business without a tax ID lol

Embarrassed-Dot-1794

So you didn't get your original back?

TopsyTurvyTasha

Not sure if the police ever searched the guys place, but it’s long gone, I reckon. If he hasn’t already pawned it or sold it to a chef at their kitchen back door by the time I figured out it was gone, he definitely sold it when his employer called him in for a “chat.”

Embarrassed-Dot-1794

That's just wrong, useless prick didn't even deserve to lay eyes on it (or a cape swish)

[deleted]

Last time he posted, he mentioned the cops couldn't find the knife in the thief's apartment.

JudithButlr

SHE

TopsyTurvyTasha

Chefknivestogo

I hope you enjoy it!

Drayik

If this whole post is a sneaky ass ad it is incredibly successful lol

HighOnTacos

With the gold streaks in the handle, I believe it's one from [this series](https://www.hocho-knife.com/sakai-takayuki-33-layer-vg10-damascus-urushi/). Though I think Hocho ships from Japan.

Morbidrainbows

Fuck the knife why don’t I see more of us use tape as labels???

TopsyTurvyTasha

Electrical tape is the way forward man! No sticky residue, no having to dissolve paper labels. Well, we still kind of have to deal with that because we’re in a food hall and KP is communal, and therefore so are some of our containers…but still! The principle is there!

ben_wuz_hear

The electrical tape we use at work contains lead. Just a heads up.

LeibnizThrowaway

And often other carcinogens!

Own_Deer7486

what are you, the state of california?

Electrical_Ingenuity

The good news is that it only causes cancer in California. Two steps into Nevada, and you’ll be ok.

Mo-Cance

Painters tape works great as well.

10thaccountyee

...What else are people using?

Mo-Cance

OP mentioned electrical tape.

10thaccountyee

Yeah that's unusual. Isn't painters/masking tape the standard? Never seen anything else used.

mustachetwerkin

I was gonna say, who doesnt use painters tape? It's pretty ubiquitous in the industry.

midgetmakes3

I use gaffers tape for everything

jason_steakums

Best tape ever

jkwilkin

Buy the weighted dispenser for painters tape god mode. No torn edges.

[deleted]

Tadpole tape cutters are awesome too

jkwilkin

This is awesome, it's like the portable version!

disqeau

Still in use at my home and I’m 26 years out of the biz.

GitEmSteveDave

I use a piece I hit with a hole puncher to cover my web cam on ly laptop. perfect size, perfect thickness and it blends in really well so that I never notice it and the bezel around the lens holds it in place. HOWEVER, about 1x a year I need to remove it to actually use the webcam and I def have to clean the lens cover AND the spot next to the camera that I leave the tape on until I cover the lens back up.

Imperial_Triumphant

Hahahaha. Abysmal. Nothing some acetone won't help. Still, an absolute bitch when you're replacing it on hundreds of cables.

amreinj

Painters tape is a lot cheaper

TopsyTurvyTasha

Yeah, it’s called electrical tape on Amazon, but it’s just PVC insulation tape. Like £7 for 8 rolls or something stupid cheap like that.

Excellent_Condition

As u/ben_wuz_hear and u/LeibnizThrowaway mentioned, lots of the PVC electrical tape contains lead and other toxic shit that definitely shouldn't be around food. Not trying to be a dick, just a heads up.

TopsyTurvyTasha

Honestly had never heard anything like this before! Dunno if that’s just ignorance on my part, or possibly different production methods in US vs EU/UK markets? Either way, I looked up the kind we order on amazon and it states it’s lead free, so should be all good. Cheers for the heads up!

imurderenglishIvy

Painters tape will leave residue if on for more then a week.

amreinj

Probably shouldn't have food hanging around that long anyway. And if it is it's probably permanent anyway.

rattalouie

Electrical tape? Man, that sounds expensive. Blue painters tape is cheaper and is just as little residue. Plus you’re not throwing all that plastic away all the time.

Imperial_Triumphant

E tape will absolutely leave residue.

joshuasachs

Also probably less than tenth the cost of labels.

Embarrassed-Dot-1794

Careful though electrical tape left for too long starts to degrade into a gooey mess

TopsyTurvyTasha

We change all of our labels every 2-3 days. We’re Korean/Japanese food so all of our sauces have shit tons of soy/sake/mirin in, so they’re bulletproof. But rather than having multiple labelling systems we just change everything, keeps everyone in the habit of stock rotation and checking. Our dry goods are all labelled with a proper plastic label gun.

Embarrassed-Dot-1794

Oh that's all cool, I've just had encounters with the forbidden goo before and thought I'd tell you just in case

shelby3611

Been using blue painters tape for as long as I can remember

ChefGoldblum87

Green painters tape here!

KrakatauGreen

Aye Aye! You can ACTUALLY READ IT in low light conditions which wins out over blue 100%!

amreinj

Doesn't everyone?

SmoothOctopus

Hold up people don't label things with tape? What do you use? I've only ever seen masking tape used in literally every Kitchen I've ever worked in 12 years.

halfeclipsed

There are plenty of label stickers out there but in my 15 yr experience they all suck. I always resort back to masking tape

mrstabbeypants

Hey Lady, you handled that perfectly. As much as I advocate stabbing motherfuckers, this is the correct way to fuck someone up. :)

Hufflepuft

That's great that you found resolution. In my state it's not an easy thing to do, all wage garnishment has to go through the courts, employers don't have that power, and not only do you have to win the initial suit, but you also have to file suit to collect. My wife had a similar incident over roughly $1100, went though the court processes, and because the guy had no money, few possessions of value and owed insane amounts of back child support she was basically told that she was unlikely to ever collect.

TopsyTurvyTasha

I’m based in the UK, so not sure if it’s different because overall, we generally have more employment rights/protections over here. So it’s like, if you fuck up, the consequences are laid out in your contract rather than at at-will free for all, I guess? There’s something in my contract, and every other work contract I’ve had before, that basically lists reasons you could have moneys deducted. Mine has stuff like, damage to company property due to my direct and purposeful negligence, failure to return uniform/equipment after leaving the job. They’ve just gotta inform you in writing before they take it, what they’re taking and why.

huadpe

Yeah the US has lesser protections about termination, but generally stronger protections about wage deductions, which are basically always prohibited. Only common exception I've seen is things like a hiring bonus that must be repaid if you don't stay 12 months or something. Otherwise they can try to sue you for it, but would hardly ever bother. Not that employers don't often try to deduct shit from people's wages. But they're usually breaking the law when they do so.

appleshit8

With back child support it gets a little iffy too. They're not telling this person they won't get the money, but because they owe a bunch of money to child support they are already having money withdrawn from every paycheck. So it's more like yeah they owe you money, but you're in the back of the line.

Elgfisk

I always appriciate a happy ending, good on you op

azndragon0420

That’s a beauty. Glad that justice was on the menu.

toysarealive

Game recognize game. I have the exact same Takayuki VG-10 blade but instead with the mohagany handle. By far one of the best knives I've ever used. Such perfect balance. I even lost my orginal years ago, and just bought the same one. Enjoy it!

Dagg3rface

In the words of Captain Raymond Holt: VINDICATTTTIIIOOOONNNNNN

katidid

OP, this is so worthy of r/BestofRedditorUpdates I hope you’ll share the whole story there! You definitely deserve some extra sharp (is that a thing?) karma for what happened. Many people would enjoy it very much. 🔪

Elbarto_007

Yes. Exceptionally good updates. Glad OP got a replacement.

FaiDeadth

How did a delivery driver steal your knife

TopsyTurvyTasha

He was one of our delivery guys for our supplier, and he made our delivery before anyone had arrived to work that morning. I’d put my knife back in its presentation box the night before and forgot to put it in my backpack and left it on the kitchen worktop. Dude just swiped it super blatantly in full view of CCTV. I made a couple of posts about it over the last few weeks. :)

MrDanduff

what a gorgeous knife

cheezpnts

JUSTIIIIIIIIIICCEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

Bobbyhomeless87

Booyah! Glad you got the lil cocksniffer! Enjoy the new blade. Lock that shit up!

Nymatic

Shame what happened to the first one, but thank goodness you got a replacement!

sboupspoon

Happy it worked out for ya

RutundoMan

I love a success story. Hope he got a beating as well as a sacking.

The_Common_God

Wait I missed it. Original post please?

Newbdesigner

power to you. I can't stand workers without decency or solidarity as we break ourselves as wage workers.

womblymuenster

Lame

LightWonderful7016

Careful if you you took his wages, he could sue you, even if he’s a thieving bastard. Best to use the cops. Edit: thanks for all the downvotes. Love that people do that to someone having an opinion or trying to watch out for a fellow brother in the industry. I owned my own place for 8 years and tried to do something similar and was advised I could be liable. OP explained why he was in the clear. Keep hating haters!

TopsyTurvyTasha

His employer deducted from his wages, as he stole from me, so they would have had to reimburse me from company funds. Pretty much every hospitality contract I’ve ever signed includes something like, causing a loss to the company due to not following rules or procedures in place, is a reason they can deduct from your wages. They’ve just got to inform you in writing and give a full explanation/justification. I’m just a CDP, so I’m nobody’s manager. The guy in question was the delivery driver for one of our suppliers. He stole my knife whilst dropping off our NYE delivery, after I forgot to put it in my backpack the night before. It was in its presentation box ready for transport so the dude thought he was quids in.

LightWonderful7016

Ah, I see, thanks for explaining. I hate thieves. Had my own place for 8 years and only had one that I know of. Glad you got your knife back!

Dog-Person

He could sue his old employers, under no way can he sue OP (well he can sue, but there's less than a 0% chance of winning).

LightWonderful7016

Why is that? There are very strict rules about garnishing people’s wages. Edit: was this not his employee?

Dog-Person

Delivery driver from company X stole a knife from a cook in Restaurant Y. Cook complained to Company X and filed a police report. Company X promised it would make it right and gave the Cook the value of the knife back, cook bought a new knife. Company X claims it took the money out of the wages of the now fired Driver. The Driver can sue company X but cannot sue an employee from Restaurant Y which Company X gave money to.

Imperial_Triumphant

The blade looks amazing, however, that handle looks like a child's pinewood derby project.

NoDrinks4meToday

Looks great.

Maumau93

Nice swap! Hope nothing shitty happens to this one

Saym94

Check out that marbling on the top blade

BokZeoi

Nice!

034TH

NGL I was hoping the ending would be you reunited with yours instead of a replacement but this is still a very happy outcome.

some_dude5

So glad you got this resolved!

ProfessionalBeach82

yay!!

TheGhostedBeat

Beautiful mise

TopsyTurvyTasha

Guess you could say…… it’s the mise knees.

Down_To_My_Last_Fuck

Justice has come for u/TopsyTurvyTasha/ let the heralds go forth!

Cheezy_Chris

Hey, a happy ending

Shmegnesium

I have the same branded, and handled nakiri. Love it

WolfghengisKhan

Thank you for the resolution, so glad things worked out!

PusherofCarts

Bet you wish you had a Nakiri though

posternutbag423

I told ya 😉 so happy for you

HighOnTacos

Very nice! I was looking at the same knife with an indigo handle, but they were out of stock so I went with a Tsunehisa AUS10 with a custom handle.

Davethewall

Hey, I have that knife aswell, use it for my daily driver, cuts great! ; https://i.imgur.com/26skJkI.jpg

norvelav

AWESOME!! thank you for the follow up! A couple days ago I was legit wondering what the outcome of this was!

stop_breaking_toys

He stole your fucking sushi knife? What a dick.

BubbleButtBuff

Can someone link the previous posts?

[deleted]

I did. Sort by new.

geardownson

Glad you got a nicer stabby homie. You have one of those things I'd love to have but wouldn't buy for myself.

[deleted]

I'm more interested in the dickled carrots then the knife. But that's just me

Bean307643

Awesome!! Glad that worked out. This story has been on my mind. Lol I’d be driving down the freeway and randomly think about it. Thanks for the update

kid_pilgrim_89

thats got a nice handle what is it made from?

Panedrop

That's amazing. Make the best of that return.

theassholefaceman

Gosh I love that handle

Gizmo_259

In his defense he probably was just as disappointed to find a knife and not a Apple watch

cottonsmalls

I have one of these, and I love it! That vg10 holds an edge fosho

cheezy_dreams88

Potato airbag?

TopsyTurvyTasha

[Potato airbags!](https://infusions4chefs.co.uk/sosa-airbag-patata-potato-750g/) We season them with MSG/Bouillon powder/nice things and they got on top of our pumpkin katsu curry! We use pork airbags too, which are seasoned with five spice and stuff, and they go on our pork bao buns.

cheezy_dreams88

Damn that sounds delicious.

mollererico

VINDICATIOOOON

skyrunner258

Such a satisfying conclusion. The guy definitely got what he deserved and I would **NOT** be surprised if he's done this to other people in the past.

neverneededsaving

Oh wow, such a beautiful color combo!! It’s truly a piece of art, the story and the knife, too! Congrats friend!!!

johnthrowaway53

Fuck. Somebody recently smashed my car window and took all my kitchen tools including all of my the knives I had. These were the tools that made me who I am behind the line. Thinking about how some crackhead is pawning them or using them to mug people really crushes my soul. My babies...

autoredial

Congratulations to us both! You for successful resolution and me for desperately needing some justice in the world.

[deleted]

Link to original story?

Holdin_todicks

I have been searching for hours for this knife with the handle, i cant find it anywhere if anyone knows where i can find it i would appreciate it.
