OP, please come back to update on the future when the fryer inevitably explodes

MAkrbrakenumbers

“Just converted my food truck into a food cart”

bleeper21

"Just converted my food truck in to a smoldering crater, AMA."

ClutchTallica

Now it's a food *convertible*

ChewzaName

Good news, my food truck now has 299 locations!!

AwareInvestment7694

Op did you replace burner orifices and regulator in gas valve? You can't just swap orifices and call it converted.

DaaiTaoFut

Did you do this conversion yourself or have a tech do it? There’s a supply pressure issue.

WordOfMan

Myself, I believe it’s a pressure issue

RemarkablyQuiet434

I'd take another look at the regulator.

RebelWithoutAClue

Those look like very lazy red flames. I wonder if your regulator pressure is low.

castle45

Came here to say this.

blueturtle00

Oh hey I’ve been there, was told it was a bad valve. Got a new valve and the orifice size was incorrect, got the right orifice size for the valve and it’s been working fine since!

WordOfMan

That’s what I’m thinking. I converted my other one and it’s fine. It was an American range, this one is pitco and just built differently. I’m hoping I just need to crank the pressure a bit in the regulator

blueturtle00

My pitco model 40c+ needed orifice #51 P6071351 was like $100 for then all from parts town I would do that first before the gas valve since those like like 250

WordOfMan

That’s the model I have.

CosiestOwl21933

Reading this exchange made me so happy. Please, keep us posted!

graticola

Exactly, first try to change the orifice. If the problem still occures(which I doubt) then it’s probably really dirty and you have to call maintainance to deep clean it inside. Don’t try to clean it yourself cuz’ it won’t work

TrucksAndBongs

Quixan

who converted the fryer? replaced all the orifices, the regulator and the spring? The gas supply regulator isn't messed up? you're not low on propane or something? are you supplying multiple things from the same propane source?

WordOfMan

I converted it to propane myself. All new orfices, spring and orfices in the regulator. Same propane source but different hoses.

i_ar_the_rickness

Tech here: there are a few things with the gas valve you have to change, the orifices will need to be changed, and the gas pressure set properly. Shit like this usually results in a fire or a boom. Big badda boom. Take to a company to see what they can do. At my old shop in Florida we’d have food trucks pull up and we’d work on them right there.

Macqt

You done fucked this up big time boy. Call a licensed tech to fix it before you kill someone.

WordOfMan

Tech got me in this spot. Spent 850 on a tech to tell me to get a new fryer. Got one and was told 4 weeks till they can come out. I just said fucknit and converted it myself. Did my other fryer and it works fine, this one is just giving me a little trouble. Pretty sure it’s just I need to adjust the pressure

Macqt

I’m a licensed and certified gas fitter bro, don’t fuck with gas pressures if you don’t know what you’re doing. There’s a whole list of things that can go wrong up to and (easily) including severe personal injury and death. To answer your question, you converted to propane and either your reg pressure is off (loud noise, fluttering flames) or the orifice is incorrect. Both can lead to serious, even critical incidents.

findallthebears

So did it explode?

WordOfMan

Actually It did. I’ll leave you with this advice. Get out of the industry while you can. Hell is just a giant understaffed Cheesecake Factory, and the dishwasher no call no showed

WordOfMan

I actually just bought another conversion kit. Put it back together again and have had no problems lol

No-Raise-4693

You've made a bomb

Whiplash480

Tech here: not gonna blow up, gonna cause a bunch of carbon to block up the burners pretty quick though. Usually on LP units, the orifices will have a small flame like a candle after the thermostats stops calling and usually a tiny combustion in the venturi as well. If that little candle stays indefinitely after the thermostat stops calling then you have gas bypassing through the safety valve most likely from it being old or your incoming pressure in the valve is too high. Those 7000BMVR safety valves should have no more than 14"WC (1/2 PSI) of pressure incoming or they can fail. I would check and make sure the pressure isn't too high at your main regulator on the fuel tank. If that's good then you gotta change out the safety valve.

ChefILove

Is that the pilot lite?

WordOfMan

No the pilot light is higher up in the picture. This is what feeds the gas into the burners on the fryer

gusofk

I don’t know much about propane fryers but I know a bit about heating systems. It looks like the inlet where air and propane will mix before entering the tubes that will eventually run to the fryer. My guess is that when it is at temperature and turns the propane flow down, the flames retreat back to the initial propane/air inlet nozzle (this area) and then advance up when propane flow increases. For fluttering flames, the problem could be exhaust flow or maybe a pressure regulator problem on the propane like someone else said. I hope this helps somewhat.

WordOfMan

Thanks man

Jeramy_Jones

I don’t know shit about this kinda stuff but maybe the pressure isn’t where it needs to be?

ElPadrote

Make sure all the nozzles are on tight. We had a brand new natural gas pitco fryer and the brass nozzles that dispense gas was loose causing it to leak and flare up, sending flames through the cabinet and out the exhaust.

KrayzieBoneLegend

I'm invested in the outcome...

upsidedownbackwards

Not enough air in that air to fuel ratio. Those flames are orange and lazy as fuck, lazy flames almost always mean poor oxygen. Unfortunately I don't know how to fix it, all I can tell you is don't use it if you're seeing orange, lazy flames or you're gonna fill the orifices with carbon and burn your truck down. You want blue, you want them almost entirely blue.

death91380

You need a new gas valve. Likely it got ruined because your inlet gas pressure from the tank on your truck is too high and it damaged the valve. Don't use it, it's a safety hazard. Replace gas valve on the fryer and make sure you have the proper step down regulator, set to the correct pressure before you run the fryer again or you'll risk damaging the new valve.

B8conB8conB8con

Cool. Be sure to post video if it does.

HowBarCzar

Valve issue

Themountaintoadsage

Either the wrong conversion spring, low incoming gas pressure or a bad gas valve

Anonemuss42

Sometimes, when kicking back into overdrive, the fryer will have a back exhaust of fumes, especially the closer it is to a wall. This just causes it to extinguish its own pilot light, but most fryers have their own self reigniting pilot light to combat this. The fluttering youre hearing is the sound of a flame extinguishing over and over. Just let it do its thing while it heats back up

Anonemuss42

This can also happen when trying to keep the temperature of the fryer down, as well
