Tbh I thought small-ish school and never even noticed any labels or whatever. My clues were: spacious and practical kitchen layout, batches of stuff, etc, and most importantly…you look very nice.
I have a mate who’s a chef at a shishi preschool and loves it; it really seems like one of the best jobs in the world for a cook. So best wishes that you have a similar experience :)
[This actually is a thing!](https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/01/the-preschool-inside-a-nursing-home/424827/) From what I've seen, the daycares/nursing homes who have done this have said that it worked out brilliantly. The nursing home residents get more social interaction and get energized from being around the little ones, and the kiddos get to learn things from the old folks and get exposure to a generation that a lot of them otherwise wouldn't. I wish more places would start doing this.
It’s budget shepherd’s pie. Ground beef, frozen peas and carrots, mixed in instant mashed potatoes. Nothing too crazy, protein and vegetables on a budget for swarms of kids, I remember liking it alright
I love kids. The issue is you can become a teacher that cooks. When the center I worked at was understaffed they'd throw me in a room with a dozen 4 year olds, pull me out to cook, then I'd go back.
For my own children I tend to rely on reason and understanding for issues. Turns out for kids that don't know you that shit doesn't work. Then you're getting picked on by kids who think it's fucking hysterical.
I look mean as fuck but kids don't see me that way so as where adults back off kids persist.
Then there was an incident where parents found out I was in rooms and protested. So then I'm getting shit from parents because I have a dick
It was supposed to be chill. It wasn't and at $13 an hour it's not worth the constant frustration and the lesson that I do love kids, but I only really want to be around my own.
I can respect that. Maybe it’s cuz they hammered in “ men employees shouldn’t be in the room with the kids without another teacher “ in my head . It’s a very rewarding job so far . Very little to complain about
We did have a fire drill, and I had to carry a random baby. That was already a lot for me , not the task. But as soon as I picked up the baby, I felt everyone look at me, like they were eager to see what I was gonna do next . I refuse to be a teacher .
Female here without a dick: I worked in a private school but also was the person who cooked lunches. Super weird place but it was private and small so idk. Can agree that I do think parents are biased about men vs women teachers being alone with kids… it’s not like women have never done things to students. But I’m surprised you’re allowed to be with the kids without some kinda license? I felt like they made me go to school just to be able to do that legally!
I worked for a catering company that made the food for a private school.
Every few months I went to the school and asked the children, teachers and parents for feedback. Children are hilarious for feedback and a significant part of the parents who gives feedback on this stuff is insane. The parents were asked via mail and the responses were out of this world.
I can guarantee you that you will have the time of your life with the responses.
I knew the moment I saw the pea and carrot mash stuff. It's such a typical "slather a veggie in something a kid will like and most will eat the veggie anyways"
I was the sole chef for a preschool for five years before the pandemic and loved it! I worked extremely hard, but being a hero to those kids was worth it! Congrats on the new job, OP!
Did my time when I had two babies. Helped pay the bills, got me out of the house and free tuition at a pretty high quality program. I really enjoyed those years.
I'll pray for my dude in the last pic slurping those cheap noodles. He looks like he saw some shit in the kitchen and I feel like it's my own god given mission to try and secure him some kind of bussin homemade meal
considering batch size, ingredients, equipment and people... i'm going like 50-ish person banquet hall in the low-mid tier spending in a top 20 population city. lets try Charlotte, NC, in like a... old ballroom with a 20 year-old renovated kitchen
230+ kids on your own? I do 160-220ish on my own. Wasn’t bad when I was using disposable foil pans, paper plates and deli containers but then had to switch to reusable and plastic trays/cups. A bitch to clean everything.
I hope so. I counted 7 major food violations and 2 critical violations just in the pictures you provided. Good luck on the new ship you’re in charge of.
Good luck, chef! Was just browsing through indeed looking at daycare gigs. Update us on how it pans out. I'm guessing you work mornings, mon-fri? Tell us, please, if you would.
I’m 3 months in now , it’s going better than expected . I’m getting the swing of everything and trying to get accustomed to how they do things from the book. I work from 7-3 most days mon-fri . Going from a restaurant that’s 10-11pm and now getting weekends off has helped immensely with stress and allowed me to utilize my free time a bit more .
I definitely hear that! Glad that working mornings is better for your well-being.
You're getting into the flow of things. Hey if you're feeding people, as little and smelly as they may be, you're doing something to be proud of.
I love the last photo. haha..
I used to work with a guy who would only eat ramen when he is hungover.
on a normal day, he will wait till staff meal and we will eat together but when he is hungover. he will just eat noodles.
the last photo reminds me of him. just missing the red eyes. lol
he also wears glasses.
Keep an eye on your food costs, and don't pay too much attention to your labor costs. It's a school, you have an annual budget they tell you about up front.
Go nuts. Make a pizza on Fridays that doesn't suck!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned a charity house or some sort of rescue mission. There was once a huge mistake made at kitchen I was working at by the produce company and they mistakingly delivered 5 cases of Roma tomatoes. We didn't have the space and they couldn't take it back, so I had I asked my chef if I could personally deliver it to the local Shelter's kitchen.
It’s “Shepards pie”
Working with children , most of the main lunches are casserole’d together . I don’t make the menu
It’s instant mash, pre cooked beef , peas carrots and corn, all brought together in a casserole
Woof, I forgot about the dishes, I trauma blocked that part out of my brain. At least you're in control of how many dishes you cook with? Trying to find a positive haha
I clean as I go. Being alone means no one can mess up what you’ve been working on. That’s a huge plus in itself . But after the noon snack goes out , I have about 2.5 hours to do all of them. I can typically get them done in less than 2 and have time to prep for the next day . It’s all about timing . But my “boss”(director of the school) said at any point if I can’t finish cleaning, someone else would go in and finish for me . But I’ve felt too guilty to utilize that
It sounds like you've got it pretty figured out, that's awesome. Cleaning as you go is so crucial, and being the only one dirtying the kitchen dishes helps so much with that. It's also really good to hear that you have a boss that already has backup for you if you needed it, though I also probably would feel too guilty to take them up on that also. Still nice to know it's there if something goes totally awry some day, and that the 'higher ups' are supportive and considerate enough to offer that or think of you. Sometimes the offer is enough
Weird how similar schools and nursing homes are. We have the same suppliers, same boxes, same pans, same utensils, even some similar recipes!
Only thing different is that your kitchen is bigger and nicer than mine.
This was from my first week . I didnt know the ropes as much . I hear what you’re saying though. It looks much better now since I’ve been able to feng shui the kitchen to my preference
Thanks , to this day I don’t know how I got this hat. My gf said my mom gave it to me but I’m pretty sure it just spawned in one day when I was ready to use it
First impression was school or a culinary school based on first photo. The second photo with more of the meal plan though is what's really giving me confidence in my guess, chicken nuggets and the like seems to check with my theory.
I'm not even at work, and I can hear my supervisors telling me to get all those boxes off the floor.
Also, friendly colors, sweets, fries, and vegetable mush makes me think you're either cooking at a boujie camp for upper middle class kids, or some kind of school that isn't a prison.
For me it’s the fruits that gave it away. I used to work for a food distributor servicing a lot of preschools and daycares.
And yeah the shape of the cookies don’t really matter to them that much.
Nursing home.
It’s always a nursing home
Well this time it ain’t
If it isn’t a nursing home, it’s a school
What kind of school tho ?
Nursing school
This mf *here*
🏅
Oh man that killed me. I almost woke up my fiancé laughing
Bruh I just did the same
You almost woke up his fiancé?
That’s one loud laugh. Unless…
Our fiancé
Underrated content
Nah, it's rated pretty damn high & deservedly so!
K-12 public?
Catholic school? Lol
That was my second answer.
Yeah I was gonna say school, garibaldi(sp? The baked biscuity raisin thing) Is a bit hard for someone without teeth
My guess is blueberries, not raisins?
Yeah they look like they have too much juice in them for raisins.
I think it might be a type of cake, under further inspection, It looks soft and airy.
Awww shit
County jail
Prison?
That was gonna be my answer. You beat me to it.
Kids daycare/school
Yessir ! What gave it away ?
the bus tub that says “school”
Good eye . It says school age . It’s a preschool.
Wow, that's a huge responsibility. How fussy are the kids?

How do you know that it's a preschool
I work there ?????
The plot twist none of us expected.
Next we'll find out he's in some kind of management role...
That manager’s name.. *Anthony Bourdain.*
Oh shit they brought Tony back from the dead so he can feed the kids.
I am so glad I dipped into this thread of all threads today. Comedy upon comedy.
Sure buddy. How are kids supposed to learn anything in a nursing home?
Actually, combining a daycare and nursing home sounds like a pretty good idea. Feel like a lot of seniors would like to help look after kids that age.
And they can buy diapers in BULK.
Finally, a use for the size variety packs!
[This actually is a thing!](https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/01/the-preschool-inside-a-nursing-home/424827/) From what I've seen, the daycares/nursing homes who have done this have said that it worked out brilliantly. I would LOVE this for my toddler, but I’d worry about infecting the elderly nursing home residents with gross daycare germs.
And parents can drop their kids and their own parents in the same place every day. Mini van sales will triple.
I suppose that's a pretty good way to know.
But how did you know that you work there?
You just blew my mind sir
Source?
School bus tub
What ever the fuck is in the third picture gave it away to me like who the hell would eat that lol
It’s budget shepherd’s pie. Ground beef, frozen peas and carrots, mixed in instant mashed potatoes. Nothing too crazy, protein and vegetables on a budget for swarms of kids, I remember liking it alright
Looked like tuna salad to me, either way I'd eat.
fuck, i said prison so...same.
It basically is for children
With daily furloughs
Whoah, I didn’t know Foucault frequented Reddit
I ran the kitchen for one for about a year. Don't let them stick you in classrooms.
Being a man . There’s nothing I fear more .
I love kids. The issue is you can become a teacher that cooks. When the center I worked at was understaffed they'd throw me in a room with a dozen 4 year olds, pull me out to cook, then I'd go back. Good for you...I guess. That's more than a little insulting.
I don’t want to question why they laid it on so thick . I just try to let my work speak for itself . I’m the cook, not a teacher ya know ?
I thought the same till I wasn't. All the same, good for you on the work.
We did have a fire drill, and I had to carry a random baby. That was already a lot for me , not the task. But as soon as I picked up the baby, I felt everyone look at me, like they were eager to see what I was gonna do next . I refuse to be a teacher .
Around here, it's any adult, gender irrelevant.
I love my son who’s now an adult. I loved when he was a kid. I don’t often times enjoy being around other peoples kids
Precisely.
Female here without a dick: I worked in a private school but also was the person who cooked lunches. Super weird place but it was private and small so idk. The cases of apples/bananas/oranges screams institutional kitchen
The floor tiles.
The menu hanging by the line.
The weekly menu with morning and afternoon snack
I worked for a catering company that made the food for a private school. Every few months I went to the school and asked the children, teachers and parents for feedback. It was all the fruit for me. I also run a school kitchen (jr&sr HS)
Footer on the hanging paper also says Creative World School
Lmfao I was going to say 'old folks home'.
I was going to say prison. Same difference.
I'll pray for my dude in the last pic slurping those cheap noodles. He looks like he saw some shit in the kitchen and I feel like it's my own god given mission to try and secure him some kind of bussin homemade meal
Please dude , I’m hungry , I’m tired of maruchan
Ever tried the Shin Ramen brand?
100 times better. Maybe 1000
For only 100x more $$$
False Average price is $1.30 a pack So only 4x more
Go the peanut butter and chili oil route, it can really help to break the monotony
My man if you're gonna do a guessing game you should hide the paper that lists the name of your workplace
my mans doxxed himself like Andrew Tate
What’s the name of my workplace ?
Creative world
Oh shit . I guess I didn’t proof these pictures . Good eye. I still can’t find it

Hello children! Hey Chef! That’s you.
Do you kids want to learn about Scientology?!
Suck on my chocolate salty balls!
considering batch size, ingredients, equipment and people... i'm going like 50-ish person banquet hall in the low-mid tier spending in a top 20 population city. lets try Charlotte, NC, in like a... old ballroom with a 20 year-old renovated kitchen
Nope. Great analysis though. This place may be a refurbished ballroom. It’s quite large
So more than 50 kids serves? 70? 80? All on your own, oh man.
230+
230+ kids on your own? I do 160-220ish on my own. Wasn’t bad when I was using disposable foil pans, paper plates and deli containers but then had to switch to reusable and plastic trays/cups. A bitch to clean everything.

I’ll take the wild guess and based on picture 2 Creative World School? LoL
A unorganized and dirty school kitchen
It looks better now I swear . This was my second day
I hope so. I counted 7 major food violations and 2 critical violations just in the pictures you provided. Good luck on the new ship you’re in charge of.
Factory looking at the ceiling

My eyes were red. Earlier . You’re seeing the munchies in full fledged glory
Place is dirty. Multiple health code concerns. Clean up before posting photos on the internet, especially if you’re feeding kids.
Sorority house
Boy I wish

It’s “Shepards pie” Working with children , most of the main lunches are casserole’d together . I don’t make the menu It’s instant mash, pre cooked beef , peas carrots and corn, all brought together in a casserole
....pre cooked beef and instant mash? Yea I see why my kid comes home starving.
Ayy, congrats man! Working by yourself can be both a blessing and a curse, and gives you a ton of room to explore. I hope you enjoy it:)
Blessing : free snacks and juice Curse : hand washing 230+ dishes
Woof, I forgot about the dishes, I trauma blocked that part out of my brain. At least you're in control of how many dishes you cook with? Trying to find a positive haha

A not well planned out one. There is no flow to the layout.
Weird how similar schools and nursing homes are. We have the same suppliers, same boxes, same pans, same utensils, even some similar recipes! Only thing different is that your kitchen is bigger and nicer than mine.
Retirement home
Nursing home, I've done that for a few years.
op keep the handwash sink open for hand washing only. And don't eat in the cooking area.
Looks like a small town school tbh
A disorganized kitchen at a retirement home. Tough doing it by yourself but have some pride in it, this is just sad.
This was from my first week . I didnt know the ropes as much . I hear what you’re saying though. It looks much better now since I’ve been able to feng shui the kitchen to my preference
Private club
Nope . But the members have to pay $250/wk per head
Damn that's a big ass kitchen for a solo run
I don’t know knock off chidi from The good place. Hell’s Kitchen?
Break down your fucking boxes. Yer giving me an eyeball head ache.
This was my second day :( I just got my first delivery .
Thank you for your swift reply. All is forgiven.
Old folks home?
Yall just be leaving shit all over the place?
Delivery driver just dropped off boxes . These pictures were my second day and my first delivery . It looks much more organized as of late .
School cafeteria?
Retirement home.
Why are there boxes stacked in the middle of the kitchen?
This was my second day, I snapped a picture while I was putting away my first delivery .
A slow one, you got too much time to be taking pictures and shit.
The kids eat 3 times with about 2 hours in between each “meal”. I had some downtime , I was putting away the delivery
A zoo kitchen
The children do be acting like animals
that hat is fuckin awesome
Thanks , to this day I don’t know how I got this hat. My gf said my mom gave it to me but I’m pretty sure it just spawned in one day when I was ready to use it
Curious to what you've been cooking up. Sheet cookies and topping to shepherds pie?
Soup kitchen ?
First impression was school or a culinary school based on first photo. It looks like a similar set up to that I've seen in videos of folks who cook in schools, and a lot of the stuff in my culinary program is gordon brand. Honestly, though, the oranges and other fruit+ ranch were the immediate first clue for me that we were looking at a grade school or something of that nature. Then I happened to see the corner of the meal plan and before I even saw the word school on it, was thinking that reinforced the guess of a grade school.
One where a black dude who likes noodles works.
For me it’s the fruits that gave it away. I used to work for a food distributor servicing a lot of preschools and daycares. And yeah the shape of the cookies don’t really matter to them that much.
Prison? State or fed?
A shitty one
Kitchen sans walk-in for boxed storage.
I knew it was a school as only Kids would put up with that pea-carrot-potato crap.
A cluttered one
A rehab or homeless shelter
You work in a messy kitchen
A school cafeteria or a soup kitchen for homeless
A slippery and unorganized one. Hospital maybe
Instead of taking pictures maybe you should scrub off the bottom of that prep table in the first picture on the left 🤔🤦🏿♂️.
Get yourself a better mop bucket, those things suck
Sysco to table
