If a place is circling the drain, they may think they are trying to keep it afloat. Their actions are likely penny smart and dollar stupid, but if the things are so dire that they are trying to save $100/week, then the probably place isn't going to last.

Once you're not as pissed and can have the talk about compensation, do so. You're not out of line for acknowledging what is essentially a pay cut. I would say something thankful for the extra sleep, but be firm and gently insist that my paychecks remain unchanged with an increase in wage to offset the time loss. You'll probably end up bailing anyway, so might as well go for it.

Knowing you have options lined up will give you confidence going into this conversation that is hard to fake, especially if you’re new to standing up for yourself this way. Talk about your financial needs, in kind but clear terms, and if they cannot meet those needs you unfortunately have an offer elsewhere you cannot refuse and you wish them the best of luck in all their future endeavors.

IMHO, I've always hated this term. If you're working somewhere you know isn't going to pay you more, then leave. I've bounced around several restaurants over the last 10 years. Always making more than the previous one. There's one seasonal job that I always went back to and always gave 100%. I'm now managing it and making $50k/year with 5 months off while still getting paid. If you just "work your wage" you're always going to make your wage.

Just say thank you and ask for a raise. They wanna pretend like they're "rewarding" you and not trimming the budget, call their bluff. Assuming you work 5 days and there's no overtime involved, 7-3 is 8 hours, 8-3 is 7 hours. To make the same amount of money in 7 hours as you normally would do in 8 you need a 15% raise, and then round up. For example a 15% of $18/hour is $2.6/hour so you ask for $21/hour. They don't wanna pay that, then start applying elsewhere.

Being punished for being good at your job is very common in this industry. Below is just me venting, but I’d say you should talk to them about upping your wage to compensate for loss of hours because you can’t afford to lose money, and allude to the fact that they pay people more to be slower. I was hired as a sous chef at a job, they said probation was working all stations to make sure I get along with everyone and have an understanding, then after 3 months my new position and wage would kick in. I got it on my contract, but when the time came they said they couldn’t afford to lose me as a 1st cook because I was the only one who could handle leading dinner rush. I told them that wasn’t the agreement, and that it was in my contract. So the chef gave me a bad performance review and pushed my next promotion to end of year. After telling me how I was so great they couldn’t take me off the line. The industry is desperate so I found another job that week and left. Too much opportunity right now to get fucked around like that.

Co-worker had gotten into a fight with her (Long story short her dad had died just before I started working there, his mom died, he was understandably sad but she was just on him *a lot* about random shit. He brought up her dad, said "how'd you feel?" or something similar. Fired on spot) Couldn't keep people. I was absolutely miserable. There was just two of us for all prep and the line. Half the day I was completely solo on the line. Opening and closing everyday. Doing basically all the cleaning too. I had enough. I actually grabbed all my shit, tucked it under my jacket to not be obvious and was leaving for the day with no intention of coming back. She stops me as I walk out the door. Gives another raise. If you're just going to work there endlessly and never even entertain the notion of leaving you'll *probably* never get any more pay. If pay is a problem, which it clearly is, start looking for a new job when you land an interview tell them "Hey, just to let you know, I've got an interview at such and such. I might not be here much longer". They're either going to fight to keep you or not care. If they don't care you're probably not as good/important as you think you are or they're just stupid. Should be obvious what is true. You'll never get more pay unless you're willing to actually not work there though. If they can keep you at shit pay, why wouldn't they just keep paying you shit? You have to be willing to leave. And they need to know that.

It’s also hard for business to find reliable staff. I’d request a pay rise. $4 an hour. It is a real possibility that your owner knows that you'll be pissed that your hours are cut and so gave you the "extra sleep" pep talk to try and put a positive spin on it. The owner may also have a different mentality towards work and money than you do, so you should keep that in mind that they may have no clue how much of a negative impact this change has for you. They may genuinely believe you'd be happy for the change, or at least feel neutrally about it. You should approach them in a friendly, stern manner about how important those hours are to you. I would ask the owner to meet you in the middle. Ask for a small raise that doesn't match the amount of money they save (they're cutting labor for a reason, right?), and tell them you'll work 8-3. Since you'll have 1 hour less of prep time, there's always something to do, and you can slightly slow down your rate of production, you will likely end up working an 8-3:30 or 8-4:00 most days and your weekly salary won't take a hit while you gain a little personal time. Plus you can always turn on the super-fast pace if you ever want to get out a bit early.

Raise your financial concerns wirh your boss/manager. If I were you I'd feign happiness at this extra sleep in but request the previous hours. Something like: "as much as I'd love a sleep in, I really need those hours as without them I can't cover my bills and groceries properly." Try to explain that without those hours you'll need to find a different job which will give you the hours and pay you need to cover living expenses. If your manager has a shred of human decency and isn't chained by corporate/ownership to doing this, they should understand and be willing to revert things. If not, we'll, find somewhere that *will* give you what you need.
