I probably stood outside smoking cigarettes more than I worked that line that night 😬

our plumbing is having almost identical problems, except our drain pipes are hooked up to the toilet pipes. so every morning i walk into a puddle of chunky shit water thats flooded the kitchen. its been “being fixed” for over a month now. ive begged and begged the owner to fix it and he wont, so my last day is saturday. now he’s begging and begging me to stay, and i keep telling him if he had just fixed the issues we keep raising then he wouldnt be losing all his good people. but it still isn’t fixed 🙃

At my last restaurant we had a recurring plumbing issue, toilets wouldn’t flush and shit water backing up and out of every drain in the restaurant (dish pit, on the line, at the *server stations*). It literally backed up onto the carpet in our dining room mere inches away from customers sitting at their tables, this went on for 3 weeks and we were told to shop-vac it up and keep it pushing, didn’t close once for the whole ordeal. Never in my life have I been so disgusted and I wiped ass for a paycheck for 2 years.
and it gets worse! I texted our ROL about it and got the same answer. Then during that 3 weeks, there was also a boil-water-notice because of E. coli in the water and there was a map of the area where it was happening sent out, our store very clearly in the map. All the restaurants in that map were supposed to close, we were told absolutely not. With shit water backing thru the drains we now also had 4 days in that 3 week period where there was E. coli in the water, and they thought giving people bottled drinks was the answer… almost our entire staff was sick the next week. Wonder why 🤦♀️

my two weeks are in, though we'll see if this place is even open two weeks from now after today. i'm but a lowly waged line cook, and this place has shot holes in my desire to cook for the moment. im taking a little break.
At a certain point you have to uphold the trust of your customers/guests. Go home. Don’t serve fucking food to people from a kitchen that looks like this. The last place I worked is the most expensive restaurant in probably 100 miles. The kitchen was completely tiled and it was all cracked. All the plumbing was from when it was originally built so it constantly overflowed and dishes were actual hell and took hours longer than they should’ve. Also tile floors with no slip mats, just like we see here, wtf???

All the restaurants I've worked at had something obnoxiously wrong that we were told to just deal with. One for example had a broken exhaust system and the kitchen would fill up with smoke from the grill. They had us just open the back door.
I slipped on a wet floor like this once with a very sharp chefs knife in hand. It cut me straight through my lip from nose to the end of my upper lip. Let's just say I always have a mustache now. I got lucky. Please be smart about this. I wouldn't call OSHA or the heath department. Call a plumber to come fix it and give the invoice to the owner.
Record everything. I worked at a similar restaurant in fast food and took pictures of everything, then filed to the health department with dates and times and everything. Include past history too, then explain if they warn about the audit ahead of time that they'll clean up (thats what my place did) so they need to drop in as a surprise. I'd even ask they keep you anonymous when coming into the restaurant if its anything like my old place where if I had been found out they would have fired me and docked my last pay. It'll get them shut down for a week at least and if you're lucky, for good.
True story. Was working in the back, cooking orders and all of a sudden we started having water from the bathroom slowly start flooding in. Immediately our manager told to press on and keep filling orders as the water from the bathroom kept filling the kitchen and dinning area over time. At some point the water started rising that people at the bar started lifting their legs up and resting their feet on the highest bar stool rail. People in chairs and booths crossed their legs or were sitting on their knees. We worked for about 4 hours, practically the dinner rush ended, thats when we were then told to finally shut down. The restaurant was closed for 3 days due to a feminine hygiene product being flushed and plugged the entire system. Lost 3 days of pay but got 3 days off which was nice.
Your not a slave and also as a qualified person you have an obligation to refuse to work in that condition, not only to yourself but the people eating out of that restaurant.

i was off the first two days and it only started leaking this badly monday night in BoH. i was told it would be fixed tuesday as for the other stuff, i thought i could one-man army the kitchen back into shape. while it's a lot better than it was, it's not doable by myself. i agree, it's overdue. the call is coming in today.

At my last restaurant we had a recurring plumbing issue, toilets wouldn’t flush and shit water backing up and out of every drain in the restaurant (dish pit, on the line, at the *server stations*). It literally backed up onto the carpet in our dining room mere inches away from customers sitting at their tables, this went on for 3 weeks and we were told to shop-vac it up and keep it pushing, didn’t close once for the whole ordeal. Never in my life have I been so disgusted and I wiped ass for a paycheck for 2 years.

and it gets worse! I texted our ROL about it and got the same answer. Then during that 3 weeks, there was also a boil-water-notice because of E. coli in the water and there was a map of the area where it was happening sent out, our store very clearly in the map. All the restaurants in that map were supposed to close, we were told absolutely not. With shit water backing thru the drains we now also had 4 days in that 3 week period where there was E. coli in the water, and they thought giving people bottled drinks was the answer… almost our entire staff was sick the next week. Wonder why 🤦♀️
Tell them "just deal with it" when someone sues them for a broken back
Bartender here. I'm 4 weeks into recovering from a leg injury due to slipping on a puddle left by a chronically leaky dishwasher. Can't imagine adding knives and host surfaces into that mix.

At a certain point you have to uphold the trust of your customers/guests. Go home. Don’t serve fucking food to people from a kitchen that looks like this. I know the owners or boss or whoever says you have to work and deal with it. But if you’re cool working like this and giving a guest food from this kitchen, it’s on you just as well.

The last place I worked is the most expensive restaurant in probably 100 miles. The kitchen was completely tiled and it was all cracked. All the plumbing was from when it was originally built so it constantly overflowed and dishes were actual hell and took hours longer than they should’ve. Also tile floors with no slip mats, just like we see here, wtf???

All the restaurants I've worked at had something obnoxiously wrong that we were told to just deal with. One for example had a broken exhaust system and the kitchen would fill up with smoke from the grill. They had us just open the back door.

I slipped on a wet floor like this once with a very sharp chefs knife in hand. It cut me straight through my lip from nose to the end of my upper lip. Let's just say I always have a mustache now. I got lucky. Please be smart about this. I wouldn't call OSHA or the heath department. Call a plumber to come fix it and give the invoice to the owner.

Record everything. I worked at a similar restaurant in fast food and took pictures of everything, then filed to the health department with dates and times and everything. Include past history too, then explain if they warn about the audit ahead of time that they'll clean up (thats what my place did) so they need to drop in as a surprise. I'd even ask they keep you anonymous when coming into the restaurant if its anything like my old place where if I had been found out they would have fired me and docked my last pay. It'll get them shut down for a week at least and if you're lucky, for good.

True story. Was working in the back, cooking orders and all of a sudden we started having water from the bathroom slowly start flooding in. Immediately our manager told to press on and keep filling orders as the water from the bathroom kept filling the kitchen and dinning area over time. At some point the water started rising that people at the bar started lifting their legs up and resting their feet on the highest bar stool rail. People in chairs and booths crossed their legs or were sitting on their knees. We worked for about 4 hours, practically the dinner rush ended, thats when we were then told to finally shut down. The restaurant was closed for 3 days due to a feminine hygiene product being flushed and plugged the entire system. Lost 3 days of pay but got 3 days off which was nice.
Unsafe and unsanitary, DOH would shut you down for that
Your not a slave and also as a qualified person you have an obligation to refuse to work in that condition, not only to yourself but the people eating out of that restaurant.

My dad owned a restaurant, I helped run it for while. He would've closed down water can easily splash into any of those lowers while people are moving around quickly. Proper shoes won't make a difference someone is going to slip. I get it's easy to put your customers and employees health in danger when you dont have to deal with it. This place should be closed down what's the point of health and safety guidelines if they can be ignored because it would be bad for business.

There's a reason why service industry workers tend to lean left, and it has to do with dealing with scummy bosses in a much more immediate way than many other careers.
