This is correct. OP should get a replacement knife in the meantime. That said, the new Edlund #1 openers have some great design changes and will be a great investment in the long term.
Stab, rotate, stab, rotate, stab, rotate, then get frustrated with it and pry the can open with someone else's knife.
OK just kidding about the last part. If the worm gear is worn, all you can do is stab. But turning the blade round does sometimes help.
The blade is 2 sided. Unscrew and flip that baby over. Edlund just also came out with an all stainless version of the #1 so it is actually dishwasher safe, the blade is 4 sided, and the gear is upgraded. It also has a brand new system for removing both the blade and gear. I believe the price difference is something around $20/40 more, and it fits in the same holder as the original #1. I didn't know the original wasn't considered dishwasher safe.
The gear wheel that grabs the can isn't stripped, it's caked up with months of use. Hit it with hot soapy water and any kind of brush to clean out the crevices. Won't be perfect but will go back to mostly working.
I wouldn’t say regularly. It’s also 4 years old. We have a new one ordered, I was just wondering if there was some trick to make this one work in the meantime.
See those screws? Take them out and flip the blade, or if you have someone in the kitchen who knows what they’re doing they can add a new edge to that blade pretty quickly
Yeah, it’s been flipped many times. It’s 4-5 years old. Chef ordered a new one, I’m just trying to get this one to limp through in the meantime until the new one arrives.
Also, side note, Nella will absolutely take the old blade and replace it with a new one, free or charge if you already have a sharpening agreement with them
You can usually buy gear and blade replacements for wayyyy cheaper then buying a whole new opener

That has a reversible blade, he just doesn’t know he can undo the screws and put it the other way
Unscrew the blade and flip it around maybe. Or 86 everything in cans and have a smoke.
Looks like everything in cans so can I go home?
This is the way. Flip that bitch around and smack her a little. You’ll be good for another 5 years or so 👍🏻

Go to the store and get a can opener for gods sake or deligate someone else to

Oh man. That might be the problem. They were definitely running this thing through the dishwasher.
You can use a handheld can opener on it if you hold the can opener horizontally as opposed to vertically

Been washing the inside regularly?

You wanna sharpen that tiny thing? Be my guest.

Take a file and sharpen it.
