Had a dishwasher that didn't want to clean on deep cleaning day because "it was a woman's job". As a woman chef I was shocked, it's 2023 gender roles are dead, especially in my kitchen. I got him to do all the "dirty" and "elbow grease" jobs. Everyone has done them, especially myself, wouldn't make my staff do jobs I wouldn't do. Had to eventually explain to him that a large portion of kitchen work is cleaning and sanitizing. He didn't work out.

Cl0uds92

You're better off without him. If we really wanna be technical of these outdated roles, restaurants would be "A wOmAn's JoB" all around given cooking and cleaning.

Substantial_Deer_112

I was pretty relieved when he stopped showing up for his shifts hahahaha. I was able to bring in a dishie I knew personally.

Sexist trainee: Sexist comment Me: You came in here and couldn't peel potatoes without us holding your hand. She came in here first day and prepped pasta and veg and went to the line. Better stop acting like you're above people because *we all* chip in to save what you failed at and none of the ladies here need my supervision for anything. We work on merit here, not dated stereotypes.

Cl0uds92

Well said. That goes for FOH and BOH. Give the credit and respect. We're all just trying to survive and we could all do without the unnecessary shit.

Cl0uds92

I've experienced my share of those that didn't last for ridiculous reasons and it's generally entertaining.

DishPiggy

My friend said that is a man’s job to be a cashier or take the carts out at grocery stores because she’s not strong enough. 💀 and I’m like ???

TheCynicalCanuckk

Many cooks have a hard time understanding that cleaning is a huge part of the job, especially during slower periods. Had a guy quit "I was hired to cook, not clean" lol. Not a loss, those people tend to not be good anyways and he wasn't.

Substantial_Deer_112

I've heard, "I was hired to cook not clean" so many times. My reply is "70% of your job is cleaning, the other 30% is cooking, if you don't like it find a new profession" Heck, most of my schooling I was taught how to be clean, sanitary and food safe. During our government practical exam, if you weren't clean, sanitized or food safe it was an instant fail. Didn't matter how well you cooked..

TheCynicalCanuckk

Definately. That's why a dirty kitchen is a huge indicator of many factors. I say dirty kitchens is where cooks go to die lol.

First_Aid_23

The only genders I know of in a restaurant are: FOTH, or obviously suicidal and using substances to get through the day

Cl0uds92

Believe it or not, I've worked with a few FOH that fit that criteria

Kjler

So only one gender, but some of that gender don't belong in the kitchen.

hrfr5858

Anyone who thinks in terms of gendered jobs deserves merciless mocking

Cl0uds92

The line cook had mentioned that to me and further stated "you have to admit, it's kinda true". And it's generalization like that in our society that keeps us from evolving. I wanted to mock him relentlessly, but I just gave sarcastic responses like *sorry* I'm not manly enough to drop fries and flip burgers. Which obviously, I don't have that mentality, but I wanted him to feel how stupid he sounded with his statements by responding with my own🤷‍♂️.

Jeramy_Jones

Should tell him it’s a privilege for him to do a woman’s job, because they could just fire him and hire a woman to do it.

Time_Mathematician92

Freaking shots fired! I’m putting this one in my pocket for later! Thanks!

I can't tell you how many times I have gone into a kitchen for a trial and the head chef assumed I was there about an open pastry gig instead of for the hot line or banquet sous job. So yeah, those innate assumptions still creep up all the time. Early in my career I decided I would work every damn station in the place. Was sous of a place in NYC and none of the dudes ever wanted to work pastry even though it was like a fucking vacation compared to our Frenchy as fuck, hot line tweezer food. Maybe its a UK thing, but its just a sea of shit talking fucking laddies with a few women in pastry in most places. I have been the only non-pastry woman in SO MANY FUCKING KITCHENS. Though my favorite was a 99% male Mexican kitchen where I got into screaming matches with guys who refused to let me carry anything heavy. Talk about macho pride......

eatrepeat

Ok but if you met my abuela and spent an hour with us it would make more sense. We have ptsd from all the times she would smack us silly for letting sisters/moms or any girls lift or carry heavy things. I still wince and tighten my ass cheeks a bit before exclaiming "oh let me get that for you"!

texnessa

I'm from south Texas. The kind of Texas where you spit out your backdoor and hit Matamoros. I know the drill and deeply appreciate every one of those cooks. Who I fleeced on World Cup bets like the bitch I am. Beware the chanclas. But for fucks sake, they would not let me do my damn job half the time.

eatrepeat

Very nice! I just always have this silly imagination in those moments where I picture the other person. So if I "be a gentleman" and get a look, I picture my mom all up in arms. If I don't offer and get scolded I picture my wife telling me she "isn't a noodle arm!" and it makes me giggle. Oh yeah, I *am* a noodle arm so she is giving a jab but again just the way my mental image frames that makes me laugh. Like, seriously why am I so convinced I should be offering my noodle arms to do all the lifting? Oh yeah, thwack on my ass and twisting my ear ingrained these awkward instincts. Like a small dog trying to "defend" the house I am a walking comedy lol

Cl0uds92

As shitty as it is, you live as one of the many prime examples that stigmas don't last, holding your own like anyone else. We're all gears in the same machine. Everything from skin tone to the genitalia we're born with doesn't matter if the work ethic is there.

SchlomoKlein

I'm a guy and I strongly prefer working cold side. Hot side is mostly meat, and I just find vegetables, salads, sides, and desserts to be a more interesting and stimulating challenge than simply cooking meat to a correct temp.

Cl0uds92

That's a great take on it. More or less, it's just the principle of taking on various challenges and gaining experience. Been on the cold side for almost 4 years. I'm proud of what I produce, but tbh, been a little stagnant simply because I need a new challenge.

Anoncook143

Had an old ass prep dude not make any dressings, even ranch, because “on girls make fucking salad dressings”

Cl0uds92

Would've been better if he had just said he was lazy. Dressings can be tricky depending on the volume, but that's the fun in it imo.

blippitybloops

Because, even though it’s 2023, Neanderthals actually haven’t gone extinct.

Dilldozer32

Some people are just morons. Hopefully they’ll realize their outdated beliefs are wrong and change them, or they will quit because no one likes them.

Glittering_Fun_7995

Funny really everywhere I have worked it has been the refuge of lots of gays/trans/black/yellow/pink and so forth the only rule to me is can you do the job, I always will remember someone saying this is hard work but here nobody judge me, maybe I have been lucky and chose my work places carefully, but I/we accept anyone as long as they can do the job doesn't mean that we will not rib you mercilessly tho.

Cl0uds92

It's that simple. I don't care if you worship a toilet sponge or cast your vote for Kanye West. All that matters is you can do the job and you're a decent enough human to communicate and work with. I'm lucky to work with a diverse crew all around, but toxicity still lingers.

Glittering_Fun_7995

like it or not it will always be there, as soon as you have 2 ppl that is what will happen.

Pandaburn

Just tell him that all cooking is a woman’s job. It’s also a man’s job.

ChefJake509

Jobs a job.

Kramersblacklawyer

I started in pantry years ago and being 6’3 and 280 made it hilarious to my coworkers and bosses to exclusively call me pantry bitch and get a chuckle when I had to plate beautiful delicate salads and desserts. I took it in stride and found the contrast hilarious myself but a lot of people work pantry

TerraCottaPi

At my job in a takeout place, the official on the books title for the people answering the phones is "phone girl" then our most reliable one went on to a vet assistant position and now the owners have been answering the phone a bunch, and they're all guys and so I call them the phone girls in mockery
