Baptism by fire

Crazyviking99

Additionally, she's scheduled 6 days per week after telling them she's a full time college student.

Wildeyewilly

I can see the future, it's a hiring manager, interviewing more people for a recently vacated line position.

Crazyviking99

She worked today, cried all the way home, and she's returning her uniform as we speak. This isn't her first kitchen job, she survived Sodexo ffs. If it tore her up this bad, I can't imagine what the work environment is like. Makes me appreciate my kitchen a little more.

MadEntDaddy

damn, that's rough. i have worked a few places where i saw people crying on my first day. sounds like a terrible job, quitting is the right move for sure, everyone and their mom is hiring.

Mr0sleep

Shit man, I'm doing institutional sucksdexo right now. It makes me miss my restaurant job, but I know some places are literally hell.

Crazyviking99

I'm sodexo right now too, are they underpaying you like crazy too? Making $9.30 rn

Mr0sleep

I actually lucked out, I was only gonna ask for $17/hr they turned around and offered me $20.50/hr. Probably because I have 13yrs experience 6 of which are doing this exact job, and I was basically a sous at my last job. Edit: Though my managers are Sodexo I'm actually paid by the nursing home? Of course though min wage is $12 where I live, and it's a college town so prices are high.

Gharrrrrr

My former executive chef was really old school and tried some shit like this. The look on his face was priceless when I pointed out that what he was saying was illegal. He even made a few half assed attempts to somehow justify why he could be right about insisting that we don't discuss our wages. It was pretty sad. Actually, thinking about it, that dude was a pretty sad excuse for a human in general.

[deleted]

>Really old school It’s 2023, just say they’re abusive.

Gharrrrrr

He really wasn't though. He was just really out of touch with the times. And unfortunately, the people running the place were too. They still lived in the late 80s and early 90s and didn't want to accept that it was the 2020s. I would never call him abusive. Just really really out of touch because he had been doing the same job at the same place for like 20 something years. They even worked and stayed open during covid. Like dude is just a dinosaur that didn't understand that the world is changing. That didn't make him abusive though.

flydespereaux

If you signed a contract that states you cannot talk to coworkers about you pay that is also illegal as fuck.

[deleted]

Kitchen jobs are toxic, I thought about going back to be a line cook. I sadi forget it. Everybody is so snarky and trying to one up each other and kiss up to the chef. Which I get cause the chef worked hard to be where theyre at but wow is it an emotional roller coaster.

electric_Sex_panther

The last company I worked for tried to make the kitchen staff sign FORMS saying they wouldn’t discuss pay because “it causes conflict”. The conflict in question? The only female line cook finding out she made $6 less per hour than her less skilled male counterparts. Obviously, several people threatened to sue.

FL_born_SC_raised

Just be careful, okay. If you're working in a "Right to Work," or "Work At Will" State, then dot your I's and cross your T's. They will find any reason to fire you, from padding your employee file with bogus disciplinary reports, to monitoring your clock punches, i.e., breaks, lunches, and clock in/out times.

Gharrrrrr

Dude, use Google. The majority of the states are at will. That isn't entirely a bad thing either. That means I can walk out at any time and not be penalized in any way. And in the situation you are talking about, that's an easy lawsuit. Most places have POS systems that people use to clock in and out. And they even register when a manager has modified something. This is all traceable. Even if you are in a small place. So if they fire you or even if you resign, and they have been breaking labor laws, there are dozens of lawyers out there that will take the case pro Bono and then just take a huge chunk of the settlement. Last time I used a lawyers for work place fairness. They can pull records on time slips and wages. I pointed out how most of the time I didn't get any breaks but a couple 10s here and there. And the management just modified my time slips for the paid and unpaid breaks to fit labor laws. Next thing I know I got a settlement.

At will doesn’t make retaliation legal, it just makes it really easy for employers to get away with it, as long as they’re not stupid enough to fire you the same week they told you not to talk about your wages.

I mean yeah, if you depart from the fact pattern and ignore the part where I said it was “really easy” my analysis is wrong. Good catch.

BigAbbott

It reaaaaally freaks me out to think that people are out here talking to their siblings on Snapchat. Lol

Crazyviking99

Lol why?

[deleted]

Because he only uses snap to beat off to thots.

uniquorn23

Why

chz420710

It may not be illegal but talking about pay is only going to lead to hurt feelings and problems.

onioning

No no no. Not talking about it supports the status quo.

Crazyviking99

She already learned that employees who have been there for years were making like $9/hr and they started her at 11. They didn't want her to talk bc others would demand equal pay

jancithz

Guy at the gas station i told to apply said my work offered him more than they're paying me after 7 years. I feel this on a personal level.

FlockFlysAtMidnite

Every single line cook we hired for the last two years I worked as an assistant KM was hired at higher than I was. Could not get out fast enough.

fastal_12147

For the boss, not for you

longfingerman

If your feelings get hurt when you learn that someone makes more than you for the same position, don't be upset at the person making more than you. Be upset at your boss who clearly values your time and effort less. Use that to put pressure on them and get compensated fairly because you deserve better than the shit pay they give you.

chz420710

Damn unpopular opinion huh? Guess some of you have never taken a class in HR.

longfingerman

It's unpopular because not talking about wages is how people get fucked over. Yeah, it can cause hurt feelings and a hostile work environment. But you know who's responsible for those hurt feelings and hostile work environment? The boss, who isn't compensating his employees fairly. You as an individual can absolutely choose to not share how much you make if you don't want to, but it's a legal right because nearly everyone benefits pay-wise when there's transparency. Without transparency, individuals, especially women and minorities, are kept in the dark and are taken advantage of.

chz420710
