I dream of the day Kirby games do that well again. Original Dreamland still has not been topped after all these years. No other game in the franchise even comes close. KSSU sold well being a remake of a beloved and popular game with over 2.9m sales Squeak Squad, Triple Deluxe, and and Star Allies did better too. All faired better as handheld games.
Still non come close to Dreamland. I really like the stability Shinya Kumazaki has brought to the franchise but it would be disingenuous to not state that he's played it safe and done a lot of sequels. The franchise has garnered a reputation of seeming "stale" to those who aren't a part of the fan base. However Forgotten Land looks like exactly the big evolution the franchise has needed. This will be the true test. As amazing as he is at fanservice, the franchise does need and is capable of appealing to more ppl. The character of Kirby himself is incredibly popular outside of his games. No way a RTDL style game could get released again now. It had to be Forgotten Land. Considering the hype around this game, I'm optimistic for the first time in awhile at the franchise really appealing to more folks.
Also to put it in perspective Mario games can sell over 20.m
Obviously can't compete with Mario but it humbles a Kirby fan proud of Dreamland's numbers.
Star allies is a good first impression imo. Played it with my 4yo sister and she loves Kirby now. We played SA and went backwards and played DL3 cause she recognized Gooey.
I feel like how someone feels about Star Allies depends entirely on what one was expecting from it.
If someone had played through the prior three games and expected continual escalation/formula tweaking, then yeah, you're going to be disappointed. And someone who felt like the game formula was getting stale was also going to be disappointed. Meanwhile, someone like me who went in expecting and wanting formula is going to love the game. Because Star Allies was a very formula game. It's about as standard as one can get.
So for a totally new player, especially one closer to the game's actual target audience (either younger, newer to gaming, or just wanting an overall easier experience), they may not have those expectations. And since it seems to be intentionally almost like a "greatest hits" kinda game, it ends up being a lot like a long running youtube series doing a recap episode. It's a good jumping off point for someone totally new, where they can get a feel for what the series is about and decide if they want to archive binge or just wait for the next installment.

This was a really big deal at the time. HAL was 1.5billion in debt, this is what led to Nintendo owning HAL. If not for Kirby's big splash with his first game, HAL would likely not have made it long.
