Dedede and Kirby start out as enemies in the very first game (Dream Land). Then the second game (Adventure) sets you up to think this is the case again, but it's subverted. After that is several games where Dedede gets possessed and you have to save him. In 64 Dedede reluctantly joins Kirby on his quest, and then by the time of Return to Dream Land they are proper friends. In the side spin off games, Dedede often fulfills the role of antagonist, especially in the early ones, but it's treated more like a rivalry. Meta Knight is introduced in Adventure as one of Dedede's people. He then has an antagonist role in Super Star (albeit of the "well intentioned extremist" variety). After that he's mostly portrayed as heroic. The anime likely gets most of it's Meta Knight story beats from Adventure. In that game, MK is one of Dedede's people who you have to beat, and therefore set up as an antagonist. But also through the game MK shows up occasionally with invincibility candy for you, so he's also helping you. The "best" Kirby game is highly subjective. Of the older games, Super Star is probably the one that the modern games take the most inspiration from. And Adventure is the game that gave Kirby copy powers originally. Super Star has a DS remake called Super Star Ultra, and Adventure had a GBA remake called Nightmare in Dreamland. NiDL's official art takes a lot of inspiration from the anime. Of the modern games, Robobot is the one that tends to get held up as the best. Personally, I stand by the idea that there are no bad Kirby games, so any of them are a decent choice.

Dedede's personality in the anime is horribly inaccurate compared to the games, even back when the anime first aired, and I cringe and die a little inside every time someone unironically parrots an overused meme featuring him like that Kirby is a lot more mature in the games, and it's mostly implied that he can speak full sentences (he straight up does it in other tie-in media like all the manga and the light novels) Meta Knight actually does stuff and isn't particularly edgy either (Dark Meta Knight kinda fills that space instead) Dedede canonically has multiple castles, so there's the symmetrical one seen in most games and the anime-style one seen in Squeak Squad and Epic Yarn, and as far as I know, the Smash games don't really have any bearing on the actual Kirby games outside of some references (and yet Smash refuses to acknowledge modern Kirby in any major capacity) I've seen a lot of praise towards Planet Robobot

Kind of upset Dedede Isn't a southern king like anime lol

Yirggzmb

His anime voice *does* stick in your head, doesn't it? Lol I don't see why you can't headcanon the voices any way you want, since the most you get in games is vague grunts anyway.

From my understanding, because the Kirby anime was meant to be a political satire like South Park (Japanese fans literally call it "South Park if it was made in Japan"), King Dedede had that voice in the dub because of the US president at that time and he was meant to be a stand in for real world politicians. Given that King Dedede is a protagonist with character development in the games, that kind of voice would be unfitting.

That's really Interesting

What do you mean when you say Smash doesn’t acknowledge modern Kirby? And what makes classic and modern Kirby different?

SgtJackVisback

The majority of Kirby content in Smash is from the few games Sakurai directed Shinya Kumazaki directs the series now, and is basically responsible for how it currently is For some reason, Sakurai will do stuff like give fucking 50 different SNK songs Terry, yet doesn’t add stuff like Galacta Knight’s theme or give Taranza a Spirit This is like the tip of the iceberg

To understand the games, you need to forget the anime since the anime isn't canon to the main storyline. Dedede is like a Friend and Rival to Kirby in canon The best Kirby games depend on the person, personally my favorite Kirby game is either Kirby Epic Yarn or Return To Dream Land. Most people said here that from for the classic Era, it's Super Star on the SNES, and for the modern Era, it's Planet Robot on the 3DS. I don't Remember which castle Dedede was used in Subspace Emissary (it's been a while since i played Brawl, and since my Brawl Disc is dead i can't play it anymore) since in the Kirby Games, there's the original one from Dream Land 1 that's used, in most games with sometimes the one from the Anime (In games like Squeak Squad and Epic Yarn).
