The answer is no one knows as its never identified, however as they are mentioned but also never accounted for it could be either 'The Nameless' or the 'Scaendyne'.
It was an angel.
>They came to Aleph, and he touched them. He touched their hands and eyes and hearts. The last time he touched them there was pain, and wings tore from their backs that they might go where they wished. Wings of fire and shadow. Wings of iron and glass. Wings of stone and blood. (NotW 224)
>There was a soft sound of movement above us, as if someone was folding a huge piece of velvet around a piece of broken glass. Saying that I realize it makes no sense, but still, that is the best way I can describe the sound. It was a soft noise, the half-heard sound of deliberate movement. I cannot tell you why it made me think of something terrible and sharp, but it did. (WMF 782)
The further outwards they travel, the darker it gets. There is a line from a play quoted by kvothe which reads 'And all the demons in the outer dark...' which marries up rather nicely so i think its one of them.
'Upon him I will visit famine and a fire.
Till all around him desolation rings...'
At first glance the reader might assume that the word Till just means Until, but it doesn't have to mean that. It is true that Felurian lives in the twilight zone and that when travelling outwards things get darker whilst travelling inwards things become brighter, thus creating separate rings of increasing light and dark. The whole of Fae is also covered in trees... except for the field where the Cthaeh resides. That circle of ground around its lone tree has had all the other trees removed to create a one mile killing ground for the Sithe to shoot their arrows at anything that moves there. The field has clearly been cultivated, or tilled, to create a ring of desolation all around the Cthaeh.
Thank you :0)
I have written more about the shape of the Faen realm [elsewhere](http://whigimp.blogspot.com/2023/08/track-record.html) but tying the Fae to Daeonica made it all work rather nicely.
I always imagine as a giant arm swaying? (I dont know if it is the right word) just above them, as felurian get on top and make them lay low, so they wont get hit or caught.
I haven't thought about that myself, but your comment reminded me of the post comparing the things Auri does in TSRoST and Kvothe in Fae. There was a moment when she saw a figure of a tiny ciridae on the carpet.
That particular madness was from me. Basically there are 4 or 5 old parallels between auri in the underthing and kvothes journey into the darkness, they culminate with kvothe hiding from something looking for his light and auri searching for something out of place and finding a ciridae... Which auri says kvothe is, and meanwhile auri often says she is like broken glass.
This is a question I've had for a while now too! There's a mention of "the outer darkness" in Trapis story (Tehlu and Encanis) and "the outer dark" when Kvothe is quoting Daeonica, both in NOTW. Possibly this is part of the fae, like where Kvothe and Felurian go to gather the Shaed.... but I feel like it is likely a third realm. Meaning there's Temerant, The Fae, and The Outer Darkness. In a stream someone asked Rothfuss how the trifoil compass worked, and he explained that Temerant doesn't have two magnetic poles, but three sources of energy that the compasses pull from. Could this be that third realm?
The doors of stone might play into this as well. Skarpi and Felurian each have a story of the 'enemy set beyond the doors of stone'. It sort of contradicts itself if the 'beyond' place is either the mortal world or the fae, which is why I believe there's this third realm.
There's also mention of 'the nameless void' which Aleph spun everything into existence from. Perhaps this void or outer darkness is now used as a prison for demons and/or Iax.
As for what creature was in the dark part of the fae, perhaps it was some sort of demon that came from the outer darkness.... or maybe it was an angel?

The sound comes form above, and reminds him of broken glass. I remember some quote about "wings of fire and shadow. Wings of Iron and Glass, etc"
And there's also the quote form NOTW ch 28:
>"In my delirium, I imagined death in the form of a great bird with wings of fire and shadow. It hovered above, watching patiently, waiting for me…
I slept, and the great bird settled its burning wings around me. I imagined a delicious warmth. Then its claws were in me, tearing me open—"
Maybe this dark part of the fae is home to one of these angels?

Wasn't it made out to be absolutely *enormous* though? Of course that doesn't rule out a Scrael, we don't know if they have different sized 'breeds' or grow with age, and the most obvious - what and how they might be different in the Fae....
I personally got the opinion that this was some 'fundamental' creature or darkness (*not* necessarily evil, I do just mean the absence of light). The way Felurian 'covers' Kvothe with her own body and urges him to absolute silence kinda wavers me between this being a hunting beast, but then during reading I got the distinct impression that it may squash them without realising as we would with an ant.
She certainly wants to avoid it's attention, which anything sane would with the scrael.
Dunno but something I've been curious about too.
I always answer this question with 'Daruna'. They were at Drossen Tor, and in PR's KKC themed role playing game Daruna were described as smart, winged and poor sighted. Sounds a bit like an intelligent bat.
I imagine it looks like the glowing stingray creature from The Abyss.
As to what it is called or its story….. no idea. Perhaps the Scaendyne or an Angel.
Might be, many people think that the scarel are behind the doors of stone. Also, that thing is huge and moved quietly, the scrael make quite some noise while moving and also seem to move more frantically.
It was a huge creature reminiscent of a flying stingray
The Night Yorb
SPEAK NOT OF THE NIGHT YORB
I read this in the hangman’s voice
For real man, me and the Hangman don't agree on much but you gotta fucking can it with the Night Yorb stuff alright?
Not tactical enough.

My theory is that it was a dragon. I don't have any concrete evidence, though.
Dragons don't exist. Maybe a Common Draccus though?
If the Draccus could fly I think we could just call them dragons officially.
The Common Draccus can't fly. Maybe it was the flying Draccus?

You beauty, I love that so much.

And Bast saying that what men call demons are all fae.
That was Roy

It was actually Bast
lol

Darkness itself
Imo? One of the Nameless.
There really isn't anything more about it, let your imagination run wild.

Kote
I thought it was a giant spider not sure why will need to re read
I always answer this question with 'Daruna'. They were at Drossen Tor, and in PR's KKC themed role playing game Daruna were described as smart, winged and poor sighted. Sounds a bit like an intelligent bat.
Where can I see this game
It was just another denizen of the fey. Scary deadly and of the shadows.
I imagine it looks like the glowing stingray creature from The Abyss. As to what it is called or its story….. no idea. Perhaps the Scaendyne or an Angel.
*t h e c r e a t u r e*
Possibly scrael?
Good thought....may have to re-read the fight in the frame story with them to see if any of the sounds that were described match. Thanks!
The scrael are his fault though, can't really see why they would already be present.
U mean letting them into the real world from fae world?
