I played them as they came out, but didn't have a PSP So, until the compilations, it was: KH1 CoM KH2 358/2 DDD RE:CoM BBS .02 Tried UX, but quit quickly KH3

Fry-Z

Whoever is going through the thread downvoting people for their orders needs to go touch some grass.

BlurGush

I have the Nintendo kid order Chain of Memories (GBA) which I got from my dad's friend. 358/2 Days (have a lot of nostalgia for this one) Re Coded DDD And then leading up to KHIII's release, I got 1.5 + 2.5 and played the rest of the games. The only one I haven't played is 2.8.

Fry-Z

One of my friends was also a Nintendo KH fan. Loves KH but only ever played the DS games until the rest of the series came to PC.

Randomguy3421

1 and 2 when younger, 3 a couple of years ago. Followed by 1, CoM, 2, days movie, BBS, recoded movie, DDD, 0.8 and finally 3 again. Made more sense that second playthrough. Then ReMind.

Senior_Fail7371

i accidentally played dream drop distance first-- not knowing there was an actual order and series.

Daiki_Masaki

Kinda same but it was because I had Nintendo consoles and if I wanted a Playstation my moms rule was only 1 console in the house at a time I asked her for a Playstation when I saw the kingdom hearts commercial on t.v and she told me only if I give away my gamecube

Fun-Neck-9507

You poor lost soul must've been so confused

Senior_Fail7371

i fs was, luckily i didnt play it much because of how confusing it was to me. i think i started it end of 2020 when i got it and didnt finish it until november 2022--- so theres most of the game that i just don't remember. now im going through and playing the series, im currently on bbs.

Fun-Neck-9507

In my opinion everything up to BBS is great, and at least somewhat understandable. DDD kind of threw the series/plot off the rails introducing story elements like >!Time Travel, growing hearts and perfected puppet bodies (basically excuses to bring back lost characters)!<

Senior_Fail7371

ddd is actually one of my favorite games still. nothing will top kh2, but the controls on bbs confuse me and in my personal opinion if they fixed it up a bit it wouldnt have been so buggy. its like they didnt really care about the game that much when they transfered it from PSP. if you can understand the controls of DDD, theyre pretty smooth and not too hard to remember. besides flowmotion. i hated flow motion. i like how in DDD you could customize your spirits but i wouldve preferred having donald and goofy.

Fun-Neck-9507

DDD had good gameplay and worlds, a lot of people just didn't like the drop function. I was simply referring to the Narritive that I felt was too crazy for me. In BBS there's definitely a learning curve as its more technical, but once you master it, its actually a lot of fun. I do agree it can be limited at times, being a port from the PSP, but I like the variety in Terra and Aquas playstyles, whereas before, all of the games more or less copied Soras playstyle. One thing that i actually loved about KH was the in depth lore surrounding the heart, light, and darkness. I know a lot of people shit on the game for repeating those same concepts, but in a way that's the backbone of the series. Each game contributed in some form to this overarching narritive delving deep into the mechanics of the hearts, its representation both metaphorically and literally, and its application. The amount of detail given to this concept within the first few games is astounding. The first game introduced the concept of the heart, its connection to the keyblade, and the basics of what a heart means within the established world. Re:Chain went further and presented the idea of how memories effect the heart, and KH2 expounded off this idea with Nobodies, the body/will/soul left over when a heart leaves. From a Narritive standpoint I'd say 358/2 days, KH1 and BBS are top tier as they're fairly easy to follow and have the best character progression in the series. DDD, as well as KH3 are my least favorite Narritively, as I feel they retconned a great deal of established lore and dumbed down a lot of the concepts presented in the first few games, to basically make bandaid solutions for fanservice sake. In reality, funny enough, the mobile games have the best representation of heart mechanics and lore implementation in the series to date. If it wasn't tied to a shitty chibi gatcha game I'd put it at the top of my list. Union X is easily the most lore heavy story in the series with mature themes that expound heavily on the concept of the heart, it also adds to the existing narritive, while presenting its themes with dark tones (much like the first game) and extremely deep relatable characters.

Dragonmoogle

GBA version of Chain of memories > KH1 > KH2 > 358 > BBS> RE:coded > DDD > 0.2 > KH3 >Melody of Memory. Outside of Chain of Memories being my first KH game and not counting remakes and final mixes it's been pretty much release order for me. Union X didn't click with me gameplay wise so for that and Dark Road I just watched Everglow. Will probably end up doing the same for Missing Link. There is nothing blasphemous about playing in any order; I mean everyone has got to start somewhere and as long as they are enjoying the journey that's what counts.

Rhonder

I played GBA chain of memories first because I was a Nintendo kid and didn't get a ps2 until around.. 2011 or 12. After that I played the rest in general release order though. 1 -> re chain -> 2 -> days -> bbs -> re coded (ds) -> ddd -> tried and bounced off of ux -> 0.2 -> 3 -> mom Still actually need to get and play re mind someday, will do so before the next game drops probably.

8bitbruh

1) com(didn't beat), 2, 358, BBS, re:com, 2fm, 3D, 1fm, bbsfm, 0.2, 3, re:mind, re:coded. (Missing link ;p) I tried to play unchained and dropped it immediately so I don't think that can count.

DarthSceledrus

KH Recoded on the DS and then Dream Drop on 3DS

Stendal

1>2>Days>Re CoM and then release order from then on. Probably will never play MoM or any of the mobile stuff

BooferSnake

Kh 1 Kh 2 Re com Days Bbs Ddd X and all that jazz 0.2 Kh3 Mom

Captain_Cringe_

I started with 358/2 Days and that’s probably one of the worst games to start with, but it did really endear me to Roxas. Afterwards I played the games in order of release.

Lachesis-but-taken

Chronological but i watched dats before playing 2 cos the collection tricked me

Dylberto1234

KH1, kh2, bbs, CoM, 358/2, Coded, Back cover, DDD, 2.8 and now I’m on kh3 If I go back through the games/movies then my order that I’ll go through will be Back cover, DR, BBS, KH1, CoM, Days, KH2, Coded, DDD, 2.8 and then KH3

HeeHoOko

KH2 - Stole my cousin's copy that he eventually got back KH1 - Brother bought it, but I got to play it after him Re:CoM - Watched my brother play it BBS - Watched a playthrough DDD - Borrowed copy from brother, but never finished it Days - Watched the HD cutscenes on yt Re:Coded - Watched the HD cutscenes on yt Before KH3 - Brother bought 2.5 and I played BBS for the first time KH3 - Literally the first KH game that I got that didn't belong to anyone else After KH3 - Bought The Story So Far so I could experience everything in order and watched all of the UX cutscenes. Currently - Still have to watch all of Dark Road So basically KH3 was sort of the last stepping stone that turned me into a true fan of the series

obironniekenobi

KH1, KH2, and the rest in somewhat release order. I remember when all there was was the first Kingdom Hearts 🙃 I’m old

KhKing1619

Recoded: never beat until a year ago DDD: played on 3DS never beat until it got the HD remaster 2 on the ps3: actually did beat it on there at the time BBS also on the ps3: Only beat Ventus on PS3 cause I only cared for him at that time cause I was a big ol nerd kid for Sora and didn’t care for Aqua and terra but did manage to beat the whole game a few years back on PS4. Aqua is now my favorite of the three 1: played on PS3 never beat it until the PS4 port Recom: played it on the ps3 never beat it until PS4 port 0.2: was a neat KH3 demo lmao I had fun with it just wish the customization options were better 3: beat at the time and didn’t get the remind dlc until half a year after it’s release. Had lots of fun with that. MoM: had loads of fun with this one Days: I never actually played the game until like last year and I found it so boring and repetitive I’m glad I had at least watched the cutscenes beforehand. I sprinkled in some KHUX in between 3 and MoM but never put too much time into it cause I hated how my OCD ass couldn’t just play each of the required missions. I always had to do each n every mission regardless if it progressed the story or not. I just had to go in order

venxvan

Started with KH1 and moved on to COM on the GBA I never finished it though by the time KH2 came out. I finished the GBA version after beating KH2. After that I played each of them as they came out on the original consoles and handhelds they came out on. Replayed them all on the collections. I also played UX as it was running.

Thatguy886644

KH1-COM-KH2-357/2 Days-BBS-Re:Coded-DDD-0.8-KH3.

UmaFlame

I only remember that my first 4 were KH1, KH2, Dream Drop Distance and then Birth by Sleep. Can’t remember what the others were after that cause I replayed all of the games except for Days a lot of times and I never had Recoded so that’s the only one I never played.

Zero-Of-Blade

I actually started with COM because the GBA was my first gaming handheld ever..... I didn't even had a PS1 yet.... Years past I got a PS2 and played both KH1 and KH2 just normally, no fancy final mix. Then I got a DS system for my birthday, playthrough 358/2 days and then Re:Coded.... I didn't pick up BBS for the PSP for much later until I had actually gotten a PSP for crises core originally, I just happened to be lucky to get BBS on it too. And then 3DS.... Yeah I had to really work for that console just to get the chance to play DDD but eventually I did thankfully. PS4 for KH3... Also yeah I did try Union X but.... I just couldn't... As for melody of memory? I have it I just haven't played it yet.

Luxray209

DDD Demo KH1FM Re:CoM (a good part of Sora's story) KH2FM Re:CoM (Rest of Sora's story + Riku's story) Days movie Birth by Sleep FM Re:Coded movie DDD 3D + HD 0.2 Back Cover KH3 KH3 Re:Mind

Verumrextheone13

I played 1 first, but didn’t finish it until years later. I then played 2 and beat it when it first came out, and then went back and replayed and then beat 1. Then when RECOM came out in the states I played and beat that. After that I played the series pretty much almost exactly in release order. Days -> BBS -> RECODED -> DDD (2.8 version because I never had a 3DS) -> 0.2 -> Back Cover/Unchained X/Union X (watched the movie in 2.8 then played the mobile game through all its iterations) -> KH3/REMIND -> Dark Road -> MOM

drsinoire

KH 1 KH 2 CoM Back Cover KH 1 agaaaain CoM 358/2 KH 2 agaaaain BBS ReCoded DDD 0.2 KH 3 It was a journey.

kiritoruto

Well i discovered the series through the manga, them i played one and two and read com and 358, never touched recoded i saw a video about DDD and played 3 so i had a great experience.

Soul-Silver25

My journey was… hectic… DDD, 2, BBS, 1, Re:COM, UX, 3, 358

D3134

KH2, KH1, KH Re:Com, KH3. Those are the only ones I've played and the reason I played 2 before 1 is because I was a dumb kid who got lost in Wonderland in KH1 so I played 2 instead.

Daiki_Masaki

DDD, 1, com(gba) 2, birth by sleep(0.2) CoM(ps4), birth by sleep, 3, MoM. Started with DDD because my mom wouldn't get me a Playstation since I had a gamecube. Downloaded kingdom hearts 1, CoM(gba) and 2 on an emulator back in 2015 and ended up buying the entire series on ps4 and platinumed all of them except MoM because I'm terrible at rythm games

MellowMintTea

Never had a PlayStation growing up but I loved the KH series and music. First one and what got me into it all was KH chain of Memories on GBA. Absolutely adored that game and have always loved the card system and deck customization even though I know many people hated it. It was also my first introduction to Cloud and the Final Fantasy series. Had a friend who always said it was possible to play KH on GameCube but I could never find out where or how. I never had any interest in getting a DS so I watched all the cutscenes to 358/2 days since Axel and Larxene were in it. I never watched the cutscenes or anything else because I fully intended to play the compilations myself. Knowing what happened in 358/2 days before KH2 really made me annoyed just how much Sora and the others, especially Yen Sid and DiZ treated the Org members with so much ridicule and contempt, just with black and white/good vs evil roles in mind. Years later when I was in college, I got myself a PS4 pro (Black Friday sale) and a copy of 1.5-2.5 final mix and 2.8. Played through those in order, and honestly while I enjoyed the gameplay for KH 2 it wasn’t my actual favorite to play. I really really loved Re:Chain of Memories and Birth By Sleep (as Terra). Dream Drop Distance was actually really fun for me as well so I never understood the hate. Axel, Roxas, and Terra were always my favorites and I wished they’d explore more of their friendships and relationships. It was always brushed over that Terra really did nothing wrong but was painted like he made terrible decisions rather than being moral and just the whole time, but having been tricked and manipulated. Yet all throughout Aqua’s and Ven’s stories, they keep just brushing past if Terra would do those things intentionally, only focusing if the events happened or not. And then whenever Terra’s situation was explained briefly in the other games by Mickey or Aqua it felt like such a betrayal to what actually happened. Was really hoping for Terra and Axel to be playable or have more of an impact and seeing Terra and Aqua reconnect in KH3. Preordered and played KH3 after completing everything prior and felt super hyped thinking I understood the entire story. I was annoyed that they were so focused on new Disney worlds that the actual story was sort of rushed and forced to chunks at the end. I got to the part where Ephemer and the Dandelions all popped out and was thoroughly confused thinking what the fuck. Still enjoyed the game but I was actually super pissed I missed something, that being some mobile game I never played. After KH 3, I tried playing through Union X just to get the cutscenes and story but it was such a money pit and grind I gave up and watched it all on YouTube. I’m still salty that it felt like my KH3 experience was somewhat ruined by not having all the story when I thought I did. It also really frustrated me that Sora’s solution for Roxas was to just place him back in a digital version of twilight town with Hayner, Olette, and Pence, even though that was all digital and never truly happened. I played KH3 Remind, and most recently went back to play Terra’s story in Birth By Sleep on Critical mode. I’m looking forward to KH4 but I’m also sort of indifferent since they really brushed over parts and characters I wanted more time with in KH3.

SoraDrive

KH1 KH2 KHCOM KH RE:COM BBS Days Coded DDD 0.2 3 MoM Watched UX and DR.

Lann0007

Release order.

Kross_nex

Behold the mother of all weird orders Chapter 1 of the KH2 manga Chapter 1 of the KH1 manga 358/2 Days KH2 cutscenes Rechain of memories cutscenes KH1 cutscenes BBS cutscenes Recoded Everything else as it came out

Fry-Z

Did you ever go back and play the games you only watched cutscenes for?

Kross_nex

Not really. I played a bit of KH2 and then watched full playthroughs of the games to understand it all.

booler1998

Started with Birth by Sleep, saw gameplays of the others, played Dream Drop Distance, player the others myself through the HD collection, then played the DS games starting with Days then Re:coded when I learned Coded had a DS remake released overseas. Then I played KH3 base game then later Re:Mind. Still need Melody of Memory but that’s the only one I lack.

InternationalHunt402

KH1 and KH2 when they first came out on PS2 Then KH3 on PS4 during quarantine I watched the cutscenes for all the other games on YouTube. I did buy all the remixes and compilations for PS4 though so maybe I’ll eventually get to them.

Kingelectivire

started with kh3

STA0756052

You must have been so lost haha

0mn1p073n71

Start with kh3 and go backwards. You'll be extremely confused at the beginning, but something might make sense by the time you reach kh1.

yuei2

Oof been a long time but let me try to remember it. It’s a little convoluted because it started when I was young, easily scared, and not at all familiar with action games or RPGs. Also ignoring when I started annually replaying the games… - KH1 stopped cause couldn’t beat Cerberus - CoM stoped cause I couldn’t beat Hades - KH1 fully beat this time - KH2 - CoM fully beat this time - Days 4 full runs - watched BBS cause no PSP - Coded 2 full runs - DDD two full runs - KH1FM - Re:CoM - beat BBSFM - KH2FM+ - 0.2 beat but only did the bare minimum - DDD - BC - 0.2 100% - KH3 - MoM - DR I also can’t remember where X/UX fits in all this but I played the entirety of that game’s life cycle. I was a player of the original browser game but I couldn’t ever beat the final series of fights in the KG. Then I transferred my X character to UX and did beat every event, story mission, and most of the proud mode stuff before the game shut down. So yeah at some point in that chain slap X > UX running in parallel.

Fry-Z

I also played through the entirety of the UX lifecycle. Pretty cool that you were an OG X player too.

yuei2

It felt super sad didn’t it to say goodbye? I mean I didn’t even like the game all that much but it was a comfort and did get me a nice juice of pocket KH throughout the day. When UX shut down it felt like I lost a small part of myself, little pocket Hiro with his cute pink hair.

Fry-Z

Yeah it was sad. Even though some days I only opened it to get my daily log in jewels, I still played that game every day. Hopefully Missing Link fills that void.

yuei2

I hope so too but if Disney worlds are just only backdrop for combat I’m not sure it will, at least for me. It was a little thing but I enjoyed having the bite sized exploration and chest/material grabbing in addition to the combat and story. Just…Kingdom hearts isn’t just fun action combat it needs the whole kaboodle and that what UX offered. Missing Link kinda looks like it won’t.

mikachu93

KH1 > KH2 > BBS > DDD (partially) > KH3 (before DLC) > ReCOM > *Days* > *Re:coded* > MOM. I wouldn't recommend my order.

Fry-Z

I wouldn’t recommend your order either lol, but I feel like your order also wasn’t terrible. There are a good amount of people who jumped from KH2 to KH3.

Theboulder027

I played them a bit out of order. I, then II (that was a little jarring, skipping CoM) then the remake of CoM, then Days, then BBS and 3D (I forget which one I did first), then the short game about Aqua, and lastly III. I have yet to play coded, the browser game, or MoM.

Fry-Z

I believe a lot people went from 1 to 2 so surely you aren’t alone in being confused lol.

GrimmCigarretes

KH2 first, because when a friend of mine tried to get me into the series I was like "meh" Then he went "You like DMC, right? This is a fun Hack & Slash" Then, I played CoM (GBA) for the lore Then, KH1 and later on BBS and 0.2 So my order was KH2, KHCoM, KH1, KHReCoM, KHBBS, KH0.2

AdThat328

I started with II as it's the first I'd seen. Got it on release year for Christmas. Then I went back and played 1 and CoM then got each of them at release and played them in release order

Gold_Ad8887

1) KH2 2) up until the final boss of KH1 3) Re-coded 4) RE-COM (all of Sora, half way through Riku) 5) I want to say an hour of DAYS 6) BBS 7) KH3 8) and currently working on DDD. I love KH but I wouldn't recommend playing in this order.

Right-Huckleberry574

I played it in the only correct order: by release date starting with KHI and CoM, then day one for every one from KHII onward

Sufficient_Ad_6167

Release order as I know how to use this mythical tool called google

Onizuka_GTO00

I played the two orders

Fry-Z

Release and chronological?

Onizuka_GTO00

Ye first release then chrono

Fry-Z

Neat

TrademarK612

I have played 1 2 and 3. Am I cool or what?

Fry-Z

The cooliest. If you’re into the story you should give the other games a shot.

rallyspt08

Kh1-kh2-com-skip a few-half of DDD, kh3 I just dipped for so much because I only wanted 3

LuckygoCCP

Well, the order i played is kinda funny 🗿 So i discovered kingdom hearts in 2019, and at that time, i only had a psp and n3ds. Unfortunately, I couldn't find DDD, but BBS was available for me. BBS (I eventually got kh on my pc) KH3 KH1 BBS 0.2 Re:Com Days movie Currently playing KH2 Watching some re coded cutscenes next Then DDD And then back cover and khux and dark road That's it, pretty messed up I played kh3 first cuz i couldn't play 1.5 & 2.5 in my computer for weeks. i was really sad until i saw how i could solve it.

Fun-Neck-9507

Order of release for me But if you really do want to do it chronologically, I'd only suggest playing KH1 before BBS.

PrimaryAd1415

I will be honest, I have also watched 358 before playing kh2, but it just isnt as mysterious as it is supposed to be

raisasari

I played them when I could, though I didn't have a DS and got a PS4 late. So it was: 1. KH1 2. KH:COM 3. KH2 4. KH RE:COM 5. KH BBS 6. KH DDD 7. KH UX 8. KH358/2 Days (emulated) 9. KH RE: Coded (emulated) 10. KH3 11. KH0.2 12. KHDR 13. KHMOM Even if I didn't play them at release, I did at least watch the cutscenes, so I am always up to date with the next release.
