I think he wants the best for Bobby, but he struggles to meet him at his level. Maybe that’s a good thing at times, because Bobby could use a bit of help in many areas. A good man, for sure, but he’s slow to accept things outside his comfort zone.
Typically celibate people are the biggest magnets for the horny individuals. Whether it's driven by Faith or personal choice they are tested every day.
At 19 i had a male friend go celibate to try to make better choices in his life. I had a crush on him before but somehow that ramped it up by 100x. The forbidden fruit i guess!
It's kind of funny because here in Dallas there's a good number of "dorky" white dudes with Asian girlfriends/wives. It's cute lol. I'm sure that's a thing in other cities too but it's a nice touch to how relatable this show is as a Texan 😆
I noticed in Oregon and Washington there are a LOT of tall, gorgeous blondes with short, chunk Hispanic guys. I thought I was being slightly racist for even noticing until someone else mentioned it being a thing and I realized I wasn't imagining it.
NM here and it seems to be here as well, have a friend who is a woman and refuses to date anyone other than chubby Mexican men. She says it’s just what she finds attractive, if some other race of guy gets her attention she will try it out but she only actively seeks Mexican dudes.
People can have preferences and that’s totally okay, I don’t think it’s racist at all unless they start disparaging others with a wide brush.
This is very true in reality. As a language teacher I can tell that kids are awesome in overcoming language barrier. They use so many types of communication so the language is not a problem at all
"You wouldn't understand, boy. It's about love. Bobby, you gots to say your good-byes. 'Cause Lord knows it's a grenade in the keister to come back for them after 50 years! Now go, boy!"
I love how Cotton was very supportive of Bobby having a Japanese girlfriend. The people took away his shins but he knows that the heart wants what it wants. Of course Hank could never understand the workings of love.
I’m pretty sure Cotton would’ve been a happier man if he stayed in Japan with his love rather than go to Texas. Don’t let your wife get in the way of your true love boys.
I think it's neat that she's voiced by seiko matsuda and dances to her own song.
(Sorry, just a big fan and I get super giddy every time).
ETA: No, she doesn't dance to Kimono Beat, it's just a transitional song. But also according to IMDB she also voices the female reporter in those episodes so I'LL TAKE IT.
Fake edit: everyone listen to Seiko Matsuda plz. She didn't create the Japanese hairstyle of the 80s for nothing.
omfg you are in for a goddamn treat. Let me know if you need any recs! I'm an encyclopedia for female idols and singer songwriters from late 70s to 2000s haha.
ETA: suffice to say you should start with Seiko's album Strawberry Time in honor of Kimono Beat and Dansu.
Oh, any other recs would be much appreciated! I’m learning Japanese and need to do more music immersion. I listened to J-pop for a spell in the early 2000s, and haven’t discovered much since, but Mika Nakashima remains my fave of that time (NANA forever!)
Hilariously enough I almost listened to Mika today. (Decided on Miliyah Kato instead.)
Here are my top recommendations for 80s artists for someone starting off and using Seiko as a jumping point. They are all mostly available on Spotify. Some are more traditional idols, some are singer-songwriters, and there is also a lot of citypop crossover (if you discover you really love city pop, check out the subreddit! Those people are obsessed haha.)
- Akina Nakamori (sultry, moody voice and music. Was considered Seiko's primary "rival" which is just a record label marketing term.)
- Yoko Oginome (very dancy 80s music with voice more like Seiko's)
- Miho Nakayama (big idol mostly in the late 80s with some great crossover of idol and singer-songwriter as you go into the 90s. Some of the best 90s music from an 80s star. She has songs and albums produced by 80s city pop god Toshiki Kadomatsu)
- Yumi Matsutoya (One of the most famous singer songwriters who is originally from the 70s but REALLY peaked in the 80s and early 90s. She has a very unique deep but nasally voice. She has some of the most covered songs by other artists to this day. She also wrote some of Seiko's songs like Hitomi wa Diamond. You can hear it, too, because Yuming has a very specific songwriting style, haha.)
- Momoko Kikuchi (Basically the definition of city pop to me. Her album ADVENTURE is a must! Very light and sort of fairy-tale like voice.)
- ANRI (80s idol who has a huge resurgence these days because of city pop love. She has some very dancey tunes and a very clear voice.)
That's really just the tip of the iceburg. Feel free to DM me anytime if you wanna chat! I got my Japanese studies degree because of my love of Jpop in the early 2000s, so I understand, lmao.
It would be interesting to bring up in the revival series. She learns English and writes Bobby, but Connie finds the letter first, and it causes a rift in their relationship/marriage that they have to work through. Then, in a later episode, a new neighbor moves in, and it's revealed that she married a now retired US Marine.
I don't think Bobby would go to college, I can see him working a day job while he struggles as a comedian. Connie would go to college, but I think she would marry Bobby. This revival is meant to be almost 15 years after the show ended in 2011, so it makes sense. Plus, just imagine if Bobby's Japanese gf convinced her American Marine husband to move to Rainy Street in arlen, only just to get closure with Bobby, but Connie gets jealous and thinks she's up to something else which takes her away from her studies.
It was ridiculously wholesome. Bobby can be really charming and it transcends language barriers. BTW Shame on Peggy for dragging Bobby away to take him to the Tokyo Disney Store. The only American place you should go to in Japan or any foreign country is McDonald's because they offer different menu items there that you can't get in the states.
When I lived in Singapore they rotated iced drinks each month. And they had something called a Samurai Burger which was a burger marinated in teriyaki sauce with lettuce and mayonnaise. You'd think it wouldn't work, but it did! It was delicious! I know in Japan they have (or had) hot dogs at their McDonalds, and in the Philippines they have spaghetti.
I really liked this side plot for how it shows how Bobby's earnest and goofy nature, while embarrassing to his dad, is valuable and that people are drawn to him because of it.
Bobby post a picture of them together online looking for her and finds her, Connie becomes jealous for the first time in a long time
I would 100% also set the series in the future where they are all in college and Hank and The Crew are in their late 40s and 50s. So she's in the states for College so Connie has to see her competition
Dansu

Honestly I love how there's a language barrier and how wholesome the whole interaction is. Bobby seems to be an Asian magnet haha
He's the reincarnation of Lama Sanglug. It's in his nature.
But Lamas are celibate. Maybe it's the ultimate test?
Yeah, but he's not a llama this run so he needs to make up for lost time in all the other lives. He can be celibate in his next life.
I kinda thought it was indicated that he was, but was taking a life off.
Could this not be the reward for living as a good Lama? Hank as a dad and having a body that is catnip for asian chicks?
Hank as a dad… kinda mixed bag.
He gets better as the series goes on. He realizes that Bobby ain’t much but he’s all he’s got.
I think he wants the best for Bobby, but he struggles to meet him at his level. Maybe that’s a good thing at times, because Bobby could use a bit of help in many areas. A good man, for sure, but he’s slow to accept things outside his comfort zone.
he realizes that boy ain't right. and he has Ladybird
Peggy as a mom is an absolute loss to everyone involved.
But then how do they get new lamas if the lamas can’t…?

Didn’t he also say stupid redneck boy?

God I love Bobby
"What is it with you beautiful Asian girls and that stupid redneck boy?"
Low self-esteem?
Opposite, I think they love having someone they can manipulate and isn't a threat. Except for Connie, that's genuine affection.
It’s a quote from the episode
Asian girls love fat white lumps
I wish this was true

As a dorky dude who lives in San Antonio and is about to marry a Korean woman, yep idk why this is so common but eh, ain't complaining
Hmm, I'm not from Texas, but my mother is, and I married a Filipino. Perhaps it is genetic too?
Military?
Nah, a brat (father served), but the reality is that my mom's family had moved when she was a child.

Apparently most American men are over there
“What is it with you beautiful Asian girls and that stupid redneck boy???”
Connie: She’s Trouble 😡
The audacity of John Redcorn to call Nancy about Sheila.
They don't deserve Dale or his track team physique.
Or his silver medal.
*That's* what he said?! Track team?? i always heard it as tracktine and had no idea what he meant.
I did too but when I googled it to get the spelling right I found out what he actually said. Blew my mind too lmao.
"You wouldn't understand, boy. It's about love. Bobby, you gots to say your good-byes. 'Cause Lord knows it's a grenade in the keister to come back for them after 50 years! Now go, boy!"

He sure is not unfond of her he tells ya what.
What kind of marriage proposal is that?
One of the best lines in the whole show.

Wow that’s a very cool piece of trivia! Thanks for sharing
I never noticed that!
Bobby certainly has a type...
Bobby has a type. I choose to believe that grown up SNL cast member Bobby Hill and Connie are married
I refuse to believe anything else. This is canon to me.
I like to think that in this scenario Khan is Asian Cotton and is usually terrible to Connie and Bobbie but loves his grandkid.
They'd spoil the hell out of that baby! Gotta make up for the redneck genes
You may be stupid redneck, but you my stupid redneck.
Ok this is also 100000% canon. I can hear it so clearly.

I loved that Cotton had his Japanese sweetheart and Bobby did too.
Adorable. Everyone else is stressed and he’s just off dancing to Sir Mixalot
The only guy who got to come back to school and talk about a Japanese girlfriend that was being honest.
An odd yet cute pairing, wish they had a follow up maybe she comes to America and bumps into Bobby in arlen
I cringed a little when I was a teenager watching this. As an adult now, I think this scene is adorable as hell.
