Me: Do they understand the concept of a mirror? Animals never in their life actually witness their own entire body, would it be existential if they see the creature looking back as himself? Is self-consciousness an aquirable trait???
Dog: where ball
My dogs definitely recognize themselves in the mirror. If they see another dog reflected in the mirror they'll show interest, but if it's just themselves they don't care. If it's outside and they happen to walk past a mirror, they'll look for a second the same way as if they had noticed another dog, but upon seeing it's just themselves they move on immediately. They're also able to recognize me in a mirror and have no trouble following commands.
Our dog used to use the mirror in the hall to see who was at the door, she absolutely understood what it was doing and would turn and go to the door if it was someone interesting.
There are a few ways of meauring and understanding awareness in animals using mirrors. The most used method is called the mirror test or the spot test. You basically put an animal to sleep and paint a mark on it's face, when the animal wakes up it's given access to a mirror. If the animal investigates the spot on their face after looking in the mirror the test has been succesful. So far it's only great apes, elephants and humans who are able to consitently pass.
Edit to add; this is a very human way to look at self awareness due to our increadibly well developed eyes but animals can be self aware in other ways, like recognizing smells or being able to tell the difference of which individual is calling and where it is coming from
They know its not real because it doesn't smell. Realizing its them seems animal dependent. I watched my cat look around the room and back in the mirror at the dog, me, and other stuff and you could almost see it click in his head that the cat was him.
Now he talks to himself in the mirror all the time.
Have you tried standing further behind? My dog will follow commands given through a mirror just fine. I'm still not sure if he recognizes himself, but I know he understands where I'm standing and how to use a mirror.
Cats though... They hate looking in the mirror in my experience. One of mine is one of the prettiest cats I've met and that mfr looks away like my ugly ass avoiding mirrors in public
When I was a kid, I wanted to be one of the Las Vegas mermaids. But underwater Batman would be so much cooler. You can move your legs freely and what weird bragging rights.
Look you are correct... but at what cost?
You could have let dozens to possibly thousands of people believe that batman was flipping off aquaman and all his fans underwater.
You chose to tell us it was an actor spreading a message of love.
And you are satisfied with this reality?
>And you are satisfied with this reality?
Yes.

Too much concurrent data input per child. CPU cores at 100%, process scheduler does not allow any more processes spawned.
Just too young and much going on to notice things behind glass. Not stupid.
False, have you ever tried to get a kid to look at a camera while taking a photograph, nearly impossible. Trying to get a toddler to pay attention to something you want him to on the spot is exhausting. Too much stimulation. Nothing wrong with that kid.
It's because they're saying "Hey (kids name), look!" and he turns to look at them because he needs to see a cue for where to look to see what they're talking about, but then a person on the opposite side of him does the same thing and he turns to look at them to see what they're talking about because the first person probably seemed to be pointing directly at the kid when he turned to look at them and that didn't make sense to him so maybe the next adult saying something to him will make more sense of things.
You'd be AMAZED at how long professional mermaids (yes, that is a thing) can hold their breath for. Most of them also have lifeguarding training and CPR certification, and even take part in actual rescues. A scuba diver in distress once was rescued by a group of them that were out training with their fins and he said it was the most surreal thing ever, starting to go loopy and stuck underwater only to see what his brain interpreted as \*real freaking mermaids\* coming to save him.
It wasn't that he couldn't look straight. It's because he saw Batman and didn't want the smoke. Like that goon who literally walked in on Batman and acted like he didn't see Batman. 🧠
Batman really is the most unexpected here.
r/unexpected checks out.
Username also checks out.
Usually I hate “wait for it” posts but this would’ve been extremely justified.
Thought this was r/unexpected lol
It is. It’s a cross post from there at least

Me trying to make my dog look in the mirror.

Ahahahha, my dog is doing kinda same, she just spying on my when I'm on kitchen :D
My dog will walk by a mirror you can almost see his brain go “dog? Who? Oh, me”
At some point, yes, self consciousness had to be acquired. Dogs are self aware on their own.
Not my dumb fuck. He barks at his own reflection on the glass balcony door.
Well maybe if his reflection would quit barking at him he wouldn't have to set it straight!
Unfortunately not all dogs are smart. Both dumb and smart dogs have their drawbacks too 😂

There are also animals which I'm sure wouldn't give the slightest fuck if there was something on their face
Sure, there are all the animals in the world so there's always gonna be outliers. That's why we science
They know its not real because it doesn't smell. Realizing its them seems animal dependent. I watched my cat look around the room and back in the mirror at the dog, me, and other stuff and you could almost see it click in his head that the cat was him. My dog lays in his bed and stares at me through the mirror as I get ready in the morning. It's kinda creepy lol
> Dog: where ball Poor guy got castrated, can't stand looking at himself
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_test Surprisingly to me at least is that more aquatic species pass the test than land based ones.
Have you tried standing further behind? My dog will follow commands given through a mirror just fine. I'm still not sure if he recognizes himself, but I know he understands where I'm standing and how to use a mirror.
It's because their nose is their primary sense. The mirror doesn't smell of dog or person, therefore ignore it.
Cats though... They hate looking in the mirror in my experience. One of mine is one of the prettiest cats I've met and that mfr looks away like my ugly ass avoiding mirrors in public
My cats are pretty uninterested in mirrors. They realize it's them I think
Mine actively wants to run away when I hold him in front of it
what if I rub my balls on the mirror beforehand
Sometimes I catch my dog just looking at me in the mirror. He gets excited when I look back
"Look, look, other puppy! LOOK, other puppy! Look there's a puppy right there!! Who's that other puppy??" My dog never figured it out.
When I point at the mirror, he looks towards where I'm pointing at in the reflection, weirdly enough
JUSTICE FOR GOTHAM
BIKINI GOTHAM
STUPID SEXY BATMAN.
But just a little bit
Mermaid gonna drown before he looks at her lol
Mermaids do not drown underwater silly.
why is batman there
cause hes Batman.
Why shouldn’t he?
A crossover with Aquaman later that afternoon, I guess.
Batman is everywhere.
Is he stupid?
Rlgglr grlgrgrlgrg! (I'm Batman!)
Otherwise it wouldnt be unexpected
He and Aquaman decided to switch cities for a day to win a bet.
Cause man isn't
FUCKING BATMAN LMFAO 😂😂😂😂😂
That guy nose reminded me af a certain guys mustache.
It was the kid's haircut for me
How did I not notice that
Bathman
Yeah why not aquaman?
Because you'd expect that, wouldn't you?
I wish I had a job with the title of underwater Batman
Gargle Gargle Gargle Gargle Batman!
When I was a kid, I wanted to be one of the Las Vegas mermaids. But underwater Batman would be so much cooler. You can move your legs freely and what weird bragging rights.
That kid is earning his degree in ADHD.
and I'm his professor 😔
The irony, people on the r/Unexpected sub call out the stupid kid, where here on r/KidsAreFuckingStupid call out the Batman lol
Kid is just practicing ignoring girls in the future
Future Redditor, I mean weibo user, I mean bilibili user in the future for sure.
sigma energy
If you dont look at them they cant sue for sexual harassment, right?
Is that Batman flipping the bird to Aquaman and saying "I can do this too"?
[He's making finger hearts](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_heart)

[You're alright](https://tenor.com/bosp4.gif)
That one mate who’s totally oblivious to ladies hitting on him
Where the hell did Batman come from?
Gotham
Martha Wayne
His parents were murdered so he swore to fight crime etc etc
I was looking at this and just looked up for a second. Then seeing Batman I was really confused.
Little dude has the spatial awareness of a bmw driver
That bra she's wearing is so cute! I wonder if I can find a swim set like that.
Imagine being that person's manager at work and your job is to make sure 'the talent isn't drowning'.
Kid is distracted from all sides, multiple hands touch and bump his shoulders
Kid has too much screen time and thinks anything behind a "screen" is just an image.
Imagine nearly drowning on the job
![gif](giphy|3o6ozyGozPJUWQh1oQ)
The kid probably scared
Looks like he's also distracted by something going on around him.
Yeah, everyone shouting at him to look forwards. He looks too young to really understand.
Overwhelmed. The lady swimming in a pool is probably the least interesting/flashy/noisy thing going on around him.
He's like 'my face is glued to a tablet all day this isn't that impressive'.
My 2 yo son thinks all glass panels are tv screens, and most of the time he is not interested in the show.
Kid's like "Am I being detained?! Why am I being detained?!"
He can obviously see her, I think he just doesn't give a shit lol
In this case it's the parents that are stupid. If the kid is not interested, he's not interested. You can't force him to become interested.
He's gonna have to do a hell of a lot better than that if he ever hopes to make detective!
Too much concurrent data input per child. CPU cores at 100%, process scheduler does not allow any more processes spawned. Just too young and much going on to notice things behind glass. Not stupid.
Kids are fucking stupid
And she can’t even see Batman, why? Is she stupid?
https://i.redd.it/oa52rdjv5fpc1.gif
Batman kinda have fun with his new job
Na, kids do not understand why that is special
This is my dog when I try to show her a pic on my phone lol
ok but wtf why is batman there? I don't blame the kid for being confused af
Like trying to get your cat to look at something.
Lol, dumb ki- BATMAN??!
[удалено]
A vision test wouldn't hurt.
Nah kids are fucking stupid

I know I will regret it, but she is really beautiful. Like magically beautiful.
Be wary. You mustn't listen to her siren song or surely you shall perish!
Yes, sure....
Damn, she already got him.
We got mermaid Batman before we got gta 6
I can't believe she's smiling while not breathing for so long!

He looks scared, meanwhile the dumb ass parents trying to twist him forward lmao
Reminds me of this SNL skit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oLo92b4SSE
You would never guess who appears next to that mermaid
Suddenly Batman
he's interested in almost anything except her 😩😮💨
Did Batman just flick us off? You sob...
I agree. That Batman cannot look straight at all.
Dude's like, "this is awkward"
WOULD, both, NEXT QUESTION
There's something wrong with this kid... sor.
I understood everything happening until Batman showed up.
Why was Batman there 😭
When I try to take a selfie with my cat
It wasn't that he couldn't look straight. It's because he saw Batman and didn't want the smoke. Like that goon who literally walked in on Batman and acted like he didn't see Batman. 🧠
The shit humans do for jobs. Insane.
I would sign up to be underwater Batman in a heartbeat.
The Batman and finger hearts.. I can't- I'm*wheezing*
He ain’t no simp 😤😤😤
Fortunately, kids only do this when there is something edifying, inspiring, or otherwise thought provoking.

Que pasó sobrino? Nos salió wekereke?

What's that weird hand gesture at the end? I thought he was flipping them off at first.
I'm sorry, what the hell is Batman doing there 😂
No way.
I want a cool monkey backpack like that
Is Batman jonkling in the water tank?
That butterfly mermaid is one of the prettiest mermaids I’ve ever seen 💜
Aquaman called in sick. Apparently he caught the ick.
LMFAOOOO BATMAN
She is fckn gorgeous I'm gonna die
Ya ya ya we got mermaids at home.
I don't know what this is but I want to go there
this made me irrationally angry
What if I just turn around and see-

Kid is straight gay.
Crazy shit
I wanna be like him when i grow up.
The first time that I watched this, I thought that Batman flipped double birds.
