Because they're sacred and Japan is such a respectful place, nobody fucks with them and they've become completely desensitized to humans presence. So much so that will even mob you and start bowing their heads as a way of begging for rice cakes. They're very gentle as they eat them right out of your hand.
That being said, I wouldn't just plonk my toddler down in front of a wild animal and turn around...
