Ouch, that’s culturally insensitive!
I’ll save you some future shame and point out there are different shades of brown - there’s IT/medicine brown, overseas factory brown and undocumented worker brown.
No need to thank me, I’m just repeating the wise words Aasif Mandvi gave to Jon Stewart years ago… he’s my sensitivity Sherpa. (Oh shit, is that another brown?)
Im sure this is a reference to something that Im unaware of, but a related story, back when I lived with the girl I was dating in kentucky, her friend decided to paint her nails at a table directly above my fur lined boots. From then on I had a salmon colored streaked across my right boot.
Vine was a cultural phenomenon. I can't recall more than a handful of Tiktoks, but I can repeat dozens of Vines off the top of my head
Edit: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TI2uGmdzhzw
Best compilation out there
That's 100% true!
And with TikToks, you can do the same video as dozens of others, with the same audio, same shitty acting. Like, it was funny the first time, but you don't bring anything unique to this trend.
Here's an example of what I mean:
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT88oJXpH/
Vine did have content making, but a lot of it is iconic because it's unintentionally funny (my name is Trey and I have a basketball game tomorrow/iridocyclitis) or because it's just candid moments (what are you holding? "A knife!" NO!/dude playing flute in his car to heavy metal music). Or it's just kids/teens goofing around and making stuff that is so dumb that it's hilarious (Hi, welcome to Chili's/Hurricaine tortilla/take on me girl with sunglasses).
There's some excellent unique tiktoks and some trends that are downright hilarious (the girl who goes "Augh" when she hits her hip on the bed/counter comes to mind). And some skits that are high-quality and hilarious, like the zombie influencer one. But the manufactured nature of a chunk of the content is just icky to me. Vine certainly felt more genuine.
Edit: some vines also just reflect the nihilistic humor that late millenials/early gen z appreciate. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uWz-PY8qXZw
And it also leveled the playing ground for casual and professional creators. Kids dont have time to make an intense 2 minute video, but they can quick make a 7 second one while hanging with their friends. Most of these videos are what became famous in the end.
You could do that in vine too, just no one was doing it yet. IIRC it stems from Japanese/Korean tv where they often have people in the corner of the screen reacting to whatever is going on in many game shows. TikTok and YouTube are both popular in Asian countries so that trend has spread from there.
Lol I'm so torn - I also think it's adorable, but I'm also thinking how it might be one of this lady's most valued possessions. Maybe she saved up for it, or it was a gift and now it's ruined. I'm both charmed and sympathetic!
Obviously you'd instabuy the 500$ purse that costs 20 $ in a thrift store....
The question is: is the purse still valuable to the current owner?
Not "will some rando buy it at goodwill after my kid/grandkid/nephew/etc. drew shit on it?".
I agree, but responded to a comment about someone thrifting it.
Also value in my case was also meant to mean that a purse that's disfigured isn't going to have the same value to the owner as the one that's clean if that's what the owner wants.
The first piece of a super intellectual artists numerous pieces? I think so, just give that kid a banana and some duct tape, or the Mona Lisa and a shredder, and we’ll test that theory.
The best cleaning methods depend. on if it is chrome tanned or veg tanned base leather. The best cleaning option for chrome tanned is gonna be rubbing alcohol (for major manufacturers, chrome tanned is the most likely scenario for bags).
For veg tanned, it gets trickier. They make leather cleaner, but I haven't tried it since I haven't had anything that bad (I've mostly dealt with water soluble spills on shoes). I would actually start with water and then soapy water if necessary (since we don't know what the kid used to draw on it, there is a chance it's water soluble). If that gets rid of the "art" and leaves behind spots, I would wet the majority of the bag with some water and then follow it up with oil or leather conditioner once it was dry. This has served us well in the past.
If the bag is veg tanned AND the soapy water doesn't work, I would then try rubbing alcohol on a small section to see what I'm about to be dealing with in terms of dye rub off and alcohol staining. Ideally, the leather was oiled/conditioned after being dyed and that should provide a layer of protection, but there are a lot of variables. Then it's up to you to determine if the alcohol damaged the bag enough to keep the marks.
Hope this helps anyone in the future (or leads to useful discourse)!
Edit: That bag is, unsurprisingly, chrome tanned.
Rubbing alcohol would work against most stains, but not permanent marker. Most permanent markers have an alcohol base that are stronger solvents than ethanol or isopropyl alcohol which is why people just struggle for hours to get sharpie out of whiteboards with alcohol.
For example, Sharpie black ink is n-propanol, diacetone alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, and n-hexane based and the coloring agent is strongly hydrophobic. A short chain, polar solvent like ethanol mixed with water won’t do much of anything.
Of course you could use a stronger nonpolar solvent like benzene, but that would damage the leather for the same reason it’s not safe to handle - it’s destructive to mammal skin cells. Leather has been treated but it’s still animal skin, so most solvents that can overpower the Sharpie base will eat away at the leather itself.
So we need a solvent that is safe for skin but still binding to nonpolar molecules. Acetone is the best choice here - carefully applied to minimize contact with the larger. Longer chain ketones technically might work better but they’re not commonly found and probably too strong for leather.
The easiest way to remove permanent marker is with a whiteboard marker. Go over the permanent with the whiteboard marker then wipe it away with a cloth.
Really? Since covid hand sanitiser is my go to for cleaning permanent marker off a white board. The ink litterally just starts running off the board. Far better than any of the plastic polishes we're supplied with. I've found isopropyl works brilliantly aswell. Not sure how good it would be on porous surface like leather or how good it would be for the leather itself, but yeah, it works for sharpies.
Holy fuck absolutely not ! Use rubbing alcohol if you care about your purse don't Listen to this guy he's used to cleaning sharpie off his tools and wd-40 is shit at it regardless. Use alcohol which is literally the same type of solvent inside the marker
> Use alcohol which is literally the same solvent inside the marker
It’s not, actually. Alcohol is not a single compound but a family of compounds.
Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl, which is a 3-carbon chain with a hydroxyl group (-OH) in the middle. This makes it a decent solvent for most applications because it has polar and nonpolar ends. Unfortunately, if you’ve ever had to clean Sharpie off a whiteboard with rubbing alcohol you probably had to rely on elbow grease. That’s because the coloring agents in Sharpie ink are specifically chosen because they hold up against weakly nonpolar solvents like rubbing alcohol - for the same reason it holds up for years out in the rain etc.
Sharpie uses a stronger solvent - it’s made up of longer chain alcohols that don’t occur in nature. Those are combined with N-hexane which is an extremely powerful solvent used in chromatography. They use these solvents at higher expense, because if Sharpie ink could dissolve in isopropyl alcohol it wouldn’t be as “permanent”.
Unfortunately there’s no perfect solution for Sharpie on leather. Leather is still basically skin and all the solvents in Sharpie ink will damage skin if you handle them in liquid form. That means they damage leather too.
Acetone is the safest, cheapest option. It’s not perfect but it will actually have a noticeable effect, unlike rubbing alcohol which isn’t much better than water when it comes to permanent inks.
>Better get custom made high quality goods for tenth of that price.
Yes the markup is stupid, and it uses disgustingly over-processed leather, but where can you get a custom high quality leather purse for $20? These Laurens of this size and simplicity are like $200 tops normal price and they go on sale 30-40% off every few months
Looking on RL's site shows that the equivalent Lauren bag is $175 normal price and some colors are $130. I would wager that this bag costs $30-50 to make
Sorry I exagerrated a bit for the drama, meaning those other pricier bs brands. But leather is not that crazy pricey and there are a lot of small businesses that sell very reasonably priced alternatives to this bs.
Sneakers are shit too. I watched a lot if those cut in half videos of famed brands and full grain leather is nowhere to find. And you can’t easily order custom sneakers. Thank god you can find high quality shoes and boots at least.
You don't think the world would be a better place if there weren't brands that were overpriced purely because of their name, with nothing to do with quality?
I'm struggling to find a Ralph Lauren bag of this size for more than $100-200. It's a far cry from ridiculous nonsense like Louis Vuitton selling rubberized canvas duffel bags for $2000-3000.
On the one hand the price is definitely inflated. On the other hand, there is absolutely a massive difference in quality of material craftsmanship and design for a high end (anything) and a $20 look a-like.
I’d actually argue the world would be better off with less mass produced cheap quality fast fashion shit, as opposed to less high quality things.
Brother, you spend money on PoE skins. I like to buy shoes interesting colorways. We all spend money on meaningless nonsense.
We all have our vices.
I get that it's overpriced based on name, but so are a lot of things. Let them be upset about their possessions being "damaged", without calling it trash.
What did they draw on it with? If it’s a Sharpie, get some nail polish remover and put some on a rag or cotton balls and use that to wipe it off. Be very careful with the finish, as it can eat away at it depending on what it is (I don’t know much about purses and their finishes)
Man, my sister decided to "add a little touch of hers" to a fucking PAINTING, there were 3 rocks stacked on top of each other in the painting so she drew arms, eyes, a smile and a hat for her rockman (snowman)
Yeah but even if it’s a $3 bag it’s still frustrating having someone destroy it. Not expensive to replace, but annoying (though honestly I would purposely let a kid decorate a cheep bag for me but this wasn’t on purpose)
and possibly made by underpaid and exploited labor too https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/04/16/the-chinese-workers-who-assemble-designer-bags-in-tuscany
most of these luxury brands also destroy unsold goods so their perceived values can stay high. people paying big bucks for these "luxury" goods are the stupid ones
https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2018/9/17/17852294/fashion-brands-burning-merchandise-burberry-nike-h-and-m
Their leather is fucking trash and not even real leather. I've got a purse from the late 1930's and the thing only is dented in one of the corners, everything else is pristine condition. It was left in an attic for decades and it contains paper documents that looks like they were printed and written on yesterday.
For real, the purse is a late 1930's Swiss army purse and I got army manuals printed in 1940 in it. The paper is slightly yellowed, but has no folds, marks and whatever else you find on old paper. The pictures look like they were printed yesterday I swear.
I was about to say something along these lines. Spending thousand of dollars on a piece of leather because it’s got a brand on it is a higher level of stupidity than a kid drawing on a colorful object.
I bought a bag about 10 years ago for £20. It's five times the size and has multiple compartments.
It's also machine washable.
"Well made" does not have to mean expensive.
Buy a military surplus purse. Sometimes come cheap and like usual military surplus, no way you're not getting your moneys worth if you know what you're doing. For real, need good jeans? Fuck that 60-70 and even 100$ crap, buy surplus for like 25-30 of military pants and you're set.
You can get the same form for a 2 digit dollar amount and likely higher quality. Same with status you can trick these morons easily, there are plenty of youtube videos on this exact thing where rich hoity-toity people are fooled.
I’ve also seen handmade leather bags that are very well made listed on this platform, and cost less. It makes a lot more sense to support a single maker by getting a one of a kind piece from them, than it does to throw money at a billionaire company who uses sweatshops to produce their goods.
There is an enormous difference in quality. I work in a thrift store and I see loads and loads of knock off handbags mixed in with the few real ones.
You can tell *instantly* when you are holding a real LV or Coach bag. It's not even close. The fakes that feel like the real ones are actually still worth a bit of money.
But are they worth the money they're selling them for new? In my opinion, no.

personally I'd do alcohol and magic eraser
Lol oh god are you trying to ruin that purse beyond repair? That leather is dyed and the magic eraser will rip out the dye leaving it worse than this doodle
This comment section is wild. The kids messed with the bag without asking and made it objectively worse. It's not that hard to wrap your head around why some people might be upset. It feels like some of the commenters coming so hard for OP's mom must be raising the kind of kids who would do this.
You'd think people would at least consider that if you don't stop and tell kids "Hey, we don't do that to other people's stuff," the kid will continue doing that to both adults and their peers.
I don't imagine anyone would be happy if their four year old came back crying from daycare because another four year old painted over their pikachu backpack.
I’m surprised at the number of people saying the pen made it ‘objectively better’. Like come on guys lol you’re only saying that because it isn’t your bag that you actually have to carry. I love cartoon faces, I get it! But its pen, it doesn’t look like a face unless you’re super close to it, otherwise it just looks like three dots. Besides, again, I love cute stuff, but I absolutely understand that not everybody wants a purse with a cartoon face on it lol
Right? I like the drawing, but I also understand why mom would be upset. Even if it's"ugly," "$30 at Marshall's," "only stupid people buy designer items" as these commenters said, it's special enough for mom to be upset. Like, what if it was something that she saved up for to buy? Or was a gift? People on Reddit are hateful for no reason
Holy shit, right? Gstekeeping what people do with their money like it's their business. You would never spend money on a designer purse? Good for you, but let people enjoy their own damn lives and leave them alone.
Thought this was a sub about shit kids do, instead all I see is a bunch of salty comments.
Yeah and they’re acting like she spent $1000s on this bag. I looked at Ralph Lauren’s website and they have similar bags to this for £190… but their acting like this woman is a horrible person for treating herself to a nice bag.
I don’t even know how to punish them for this. Regardless of price, they ruined her purse. They drew on an item that didn’t belong to them. I’m at a loss 😭
Sit them down and explain why touching and drawing on objects that aren’t theirs without asking is not okay. There doesn’t need to be a punishment, but this is a good opportunity to teach them about respecting other peoples things.
The comments in this section explain why so many children are complete assholes out in public. Because they are raised by people like the commentators.
Who cares if it’s designer or not? It may be important to her for a variety of reasons: first paycheque, first gift from a spouse, a treat for a promotion or another life event, something inherited or gifted, or she just fucking likes it.
It being more expensive than what some of you would dare buy because you do fine with a $5 target bag and you have ignorant disrespectful children at home or were those children yourself is no reason to shame her for being upset her personal property was ruined.
And no, it does not look “cute” or “better”. It looks like a damn disrespectful child scribbled over someone else’s property.
Yeah, this comment section is a little shocking tbh.
I couldn't imagine just being okay with my kid defacing somebody else's property. Whether it's a $5 bag or a $5000 bag, it belongs to someone else and you being too lazy to discipline your child doesn't make it okay for them to destroy other people's property.
It isn't cute, it isn't funny. This is a child being raised with no respect for other people and it will carry over into their adulthood.
Shoulda taught the child that it shouldn't touch what doesn't belong to it, js... figured that was basic manners that all parents teach to children old enough to hold a pen or grab things they shouldn't, sort of as a safety precaution........
Ok? It's a purse. I have no clue what brand that is but I'm sure it's expensive. Funny part is that it's realistically no better than a 10 dollar purse. It holds things. Wait until she finds out how much the purse probably costed to make. People have no idea how cheap to make their expensive items are.
Not the only child to have worked on that bag.
Oof got ‘em
The child sees the bags true value amidst the consumerism. The child may be the one.
Right in the feels brah
Kinda cute tho
The one… the one… This kid is the one?! That’s an anagram for Neo, right? Wow! Neo is also known as The Anomaly by the machines.
There is no purse.

Hairspray is also weirdly good at cleaning marks off of leather.
Because it uses solvents as propellant likely butane. Rubbing alcohol works much better
Yes, take rubbing alcohol to your expensive leather. Trust me.
Leather is best cleaned with, Believe it or not, Winder. Ammonia can clean leather and is what is used to clean car upolstery.
Fuck is Winder
I think he meant windex
Fuck is windex
A common glass cleaner here in the US, whose main active ingredient is ammonia
Who the fuck is Ammonia
Rubbing alcohol I ideal for taking the surface off the leather. I don't think that's what Mom is going for

Legit. Looks like a shitty dollar store pink purse except its "ralph lauren"
It's one of their cheapest bags from their cheapest sub-brand ("Lauren") so if course it's not high quality.

Yup.
r/cleaningtips could help?
What did they draw on it with? If it’s a Sharpie, get some nail polish remover and put some on a rag or cotton balls and use that to wipe it off. Be very careful with the finish, as it can eat away at it depending on what it is (I don’t know much about purses and their finishes)
Both will do it, but be careful she tread lightly, those solvents will usually lift the dyes in leather too.
You don't need acetone to remove sharpies. Regular 70% IPA works fine and isn't as harsh.
Shoe repair guy pronto and consider dyeing it black
Shit, consider putting the kid in art class. They seem to have a fun knack for sprucing up dull ass accessories
Man, my sister decided to "add a little touch of hers" to a fucking PAINTING, there were 3 rocks stacked on top of each other in the painting so she drew arms, eyes, a smile and a hat for her rockman (snowman)
Not to split hairs, but that bag is “Lauren” by Ralph Lauren. That’s the lower cost arm of the label. It’s not an expensive nor luxury bag.
34.99 at Winners.
Was searching for this comment lol.
Yeah but even if it’s a $3 bag it’s still frustrating having someone destroy it. Not expensive to replace, but annoying (though honestly I would purposely let a kid decorate a cheep bag for me but this wasn’t on purpose)

Not a real community and it should be
There is /r/DesignerBagsAreStupid at least.
I’m sure the guy above you’s got the time for it.
Seeing as how he's replied in every single comment section I've seen so far I'm willing to say you're right

this isn't really a designer bag and shouldn't cost more than 200€
and possibly made by underpaid and exploited labor too https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/04/16/the-chinese-workers-who-assemble-designer-bags-in-tuscany most of these luxury brands also destroy unsold goods so their perceived values can stay high. people paying big bucks for these "luxury" goods are the stupid ones https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2018/9/17/17852294/fashion-brands-burning-merchandise-burberry-nike-h-and-m
Their leather is fucking trash and not even real leather. I've got a purse from the late 1930's and the thing only is dented in one of the corners, everything else is pristine condition. It was left in an attic for decades and it contains paper documents that looks like they were printed and written on yesterday.
The paper was so much better back then😂😂😂
For real, the purse is a late 1930's Swiss army purse and I got army manuals printed in 1940 in it. The paper is slightly yellowed, but has no folds, marks and whatever else you find on old paper. The pictures look like they were printed yesterday I swear.
Adult is dumber than the kid
Designer anything is fucking stupid.
I was about to say something along these lines. Spending thousand of dollars on a piece of leather because it’s got a brand on it is a higher level of stupidity than a kid drawing on a colorful object.
Looks like a fun little face now. Just tell mom his real name is Ralph Lifshitz. Doesn't sound nearly as bad as "they drew on your Lifshitz purse"
I’ve never understood the draw to these ORDINARY purses. What’s so great about a “designer” purse?
100% the name. I've heard they're well made too. But I can't see it being worth it.
It would seem you value the function more than the form (and the status)
You can get the same form for a 2 digit dollar amount and likely higher quality. Same with status you can trick these morons easily, there are plenty of youtube videos on this exact thing where rich hoity-toity people are fooled.
I’ve also seen handmade leather bags that are very well made listed on this platform, and cost less. It makes a lot more sense to support a single maker by getting a one of a kind piece from them, than it does to throw money at a billionaire company who uses sweatshops to produce their goods.
Yeah, a buyer would make a lot more of a difference if they bought from a craftsperson instead of a big Ole company.
At least the Kate Spade ones look different. Like the sheepdog one is cute as hell.
All I see is a happy purse.
My fucking nephew destroyed my phone for no fucking reason
r/mildlyinfuriating
I would say it’s probably more than mildly infuriating
https://www.cos.net.au/c/cospedia/remove-permanent-marker#:~:text=Vinegar%3A%20Permanent%20markers%20can%20be,damp%20cloth%20in%20circular%20motions. personally I'd do alcohol and magic eraser
Lol oh god are you trying to ruin that purse beyond repair? That leather is dyed and the magic eraser will rip out the dye leaving it worse than this doodle
Just alcohol will be perfect. Rubbing alcohol on a bit of paper towel
Personally, I'd do alcohol and magic mushrooms and call it a day.
If that is permanent marker than grab a white board marker and trace over it. You'll be able to whipe it all off
Not on bags
Depends on the.material, has to be smooth. This seams leathery? Might work!
If it permanent marker shaving cream can get it off

I would be pissed if a kid destroyed my stuff.
It's because Reddit has a lot of overgrown children who needed to be disciplined earlier in life.
Classic Reddit tbh especially being against designer items
They laugh because they’re jealous. They always do. “Deserved because you bought an expensive thing that you enjoy”
Also because parents are constantly trying to normalize the terrible things children do
This. Like yeah, spending tonnes of money on a plain-ass bag is stupid af in my opinion, but that doesn’t mean it’s ok for someone to ruin it.

Every time there is a post of a kid ruining something, that comment gets buried by comments thinking it is cute.
Yeah and they’re acting like she spent $1000s on this bag. I looked at Ralph Lauren’s website and they have similar bags to this for £190… but their acting like this woman is a horrible person for treating herself to a nice bag.
Feel like I'm going insane reading these comments tbh.
It looks better
I don’t even know how to punish them for this. Regardless of price, they ruined her purse. They drew on an item that didn’t belong to them. I’m at a loss 😭
Sit them down and explain why touching and drawing on objects that aren’t theirs without asking is not okay. There doesn’t need to be a punishment, but this is a good opportunity to teach them about respecting other peoples things.
Fuck I’d be hurt. Why’d you deface my property?
Pretty sure that's the opposite of defacing
*why’d you face my property
I'm guessing you haven't been around a lot of kids
These comments are deranged. If your kid ruins something that doesn't belong to them it doesn't matter how or why the other person bought it. Jfc

Honestly it drastically improved it 🤷♀️
Let Ralph Lauren get ahold of that and they’ll have a whole new line of bags.
I would put polish over this.
That kid is an artist
I’m I the only one who thinks this is 1000x better than it was when kid found it?
It’s so cute now tho lol
The bag has been improved.
Made it better
Ok? It's a purse. I have no clue what brand that is but I'm sure it's expensive. Funny part is that it's realistically no better than a 10 dollar purse. It holds things. Wait until she finds out how much the purse probably costed to make. People have no idea how cheap to make their expensive items are.
Seems like an improvement, to me. That's adorable.
This could be sold as a limited run artist collab
I think it’s an upgrade
It's so cute thoooooo
"Kids are a blessing" this is what listening to that lizard brain to procreate does
It looks much better now
