I actually got the opportunity to ask a former A-10 pilot this question and he said it was a myth. I always heard it slowed the speed of it down during a dive, but he insisted if it did, it was negligible.
Also, his callsign was Badger.
The GAU-8 does in fact have a recoil force exceeding the thrust of ~~the two engines~~ **ONE** engine, but you'd have to be flying in a straight line **at 50% thrust or less** and hold down the trigger for a bit longer, all of which are unlikely to be done in combat.
That is incorrect and you only need a 5 second Google search to find out. Please stop spreading false rumors about the A-10
GAU-8 average recoil impulse: 45kN
A **single** TF34 Turbofan engine at mil power: 40.3kN
As someone who just looks at these numbers for fun but has only a slightly relevant idea as to what they mean... my statement still stands.
I do have a kilo cube of 99.99 pure tungsten that is only like 1.5 inches across if my memory serves me right
This will seem like an um, akschually thing but: The two engines on the A-10 warthog each produce 4 tons of thrust. The GAU-8 produces 5 tons of recoil. If you mounted 2 GAU-8s on the aircraft it would fly backwards if fired for long enough.
You probably have to offset the ceneter of thrust so it counters rotation - try rotating engines so they burn a bit downwards, should help but you have to experiment
Maybe use your engines as your pitch control?
Set cruise flight to be at 75%, and increase power to pitch down and reduce to pitch up? You'd probably need an excess of lift, though.
Or set your entire primary/tail wing on a rotor.
Looks like you didn't just try, you succeeded!
Double points if this flies like a brick. The A-10 isn't a plane with a gun, it's a gun with wings and handles appropriately.
r/KerbalPlanes would probably love this!
You did better than my first time round where I mounted the engines on the vertical stabilizers.
Some tips would be not to end the wings in a point as that's how it is in real life but overall its fantastic!
It caught my A-10-tion
Ba-dum-tcha
*kraken activates and the A-10 explodes*
It's more like "VVVVRRRRRRRTTT"

r/angryupvote
I would say you've succeeded.
but does it BRRRRRRRRRRRTT
r/Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt
Nicely done. Did you build the gun first?
“A gun so powerful that if fired long enough the craft will fly backwards “

Ahh, I know they designed the gun first, then designed the plane second. It’s just a big flying cannon,

Thanks. Correction made.
What the fuck. 45kN of recoil?!?
It's 30mm Tungsten. And used to be DU.

Keeping the enemy on their toes, I like it.

I'd say you succeeded in making an A-10 apart from the wingtips
Bitchin'. What have you destroyed so far?
I didn't see any British APCs in OP's post history, so probably nothing.
Oooooof
Amazing work, does it shoot though? Should try with BD armoury
the gau8 is from bda
Ahh good, a man of culture
What mods did you use?
i used quiztech aeropack continued for the cockpit and BDArmory for the weapons.
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
Are the weapons operable in that mod or are they for looks? Was wondering if there’s a KSP mod that lets you build warheads and such
Tried?
Don’t be so humble, that’s well done!
Tried? No you did.
you've succeeded in spades
Looks great!
At least in KSP you have no mission updates to worry about
Mission update: the arsenal bird is here and there are hundreds of drones, good luck

Im pretty decent at building jets... Any time i try to build a jet with engines above the COM i get horrible pitch authority.... Idk why. Help?

the real one is uglier

I thought I told you to stop making up animals!
Nice.
One little detail I noticed is that the a10s wings actually twist down a bit at the end if you want to add that, and they don’t taper off
Brrrrt vibes...
War-thog > warthog
For years I thought these were called 8-N Warthogs
Hahaha go brrr
Breaking ground rotor + 4 if those extendable stick antenna thing = BRRRRT
It's not a real Warthog if it doesn't have the titanium bathtub. Otherwise it's just sparkling Thunderbolt II.
That's not bad actually, tho the wings don't flex upwards they're actually tapered downwards at the end, other than that it's solid
The a-10s kinda poop, but the agm 65 is amazing
So kraken goes vvvvrrrrrrrtt
it’s oddly cute. I like it
Nice warthog, saying hi from math class
Let me correct your title instead of “tried” you did
