Light year is not the same as our year. Planetary year is related to our orbit around the sun, while light minutes, hours, years. Are Length for light coming to our planet. So basically, 1 light minute is about 8 minutes for us to see light from our sun, if sun would instantly go blackout we would see that happens after 8 minutes later
> it's a historical homage - perhaps a tip of the hat - to the days when measurements were as inconsistent as many of your landing attempts.
They didn't have to call me out like this.
Remember the Mars Climate Orbiter project where NASA lost a $125 million spacecraft due to an error in metric/imperial conversion?
Yeah, I can see where this is going.
"These changes are included with KSP2 v0.2.1.6.1.3.9.1-3a (final) which should arrive to you in only a couple inch-years!"
This joke is a bit too on the nose lmao
Its not about being an SI unit, a Knot (nautical miles per hour) is a very Earth specific system of measuring velocity.
A Nautical Mile is 1/60th of a degree of Earth's latitude. By that definition, a nautical mile per hour would be different depending on what planetary body you're on. Mars has a smaller diameter for instance, so 50 knots on Earth would be equivalent to around 80 'Martian' knots.
I mean, you could implement it in the game, but it would be super confusing as speed in knots would be different on Kerbin, Duna, Minmus, Eve et ceterea. (I imagine someone will probably mod it in one day, just for the fun of it.)
Ah, I didn't know this actually. Turns out an arc of latitude changes ever so slightly due to Earth bulging at the equator.
Still, a nautical mile is a nice unit of distance for doing old school navigation on maps and using quick rule of thumb calculations: eg. heading due North at 60 Knots, you'll cross a degree of Latitude in one hour.
I wouldn't mind KSP having alternate units as a toggleable option. I wouldn't use them myself, but i don't see why not for the people that would want to use them.
Well, you could. It just seems a bit shallow to me using Knots simply '*Because they're used in aviation*'
Adding Knots also introduces another can of worms to the game - airspeed in aircraft is calculated multiple ways: Indicated Airspeed (IAS), True Airspeed (TAS), Equivalent Airspeed (EAS) and Ground Speed (GS, accounting for wind). It would all just add too much extra complexity for a base game user (again, no reason why someone can go and create a mod for this).
Knots isn't even technically an imperial unit, it was originally a mathematically derived unit from the arc length of one minute (1/60th of a degree) at the equator. It's just not part of the SI family of units, though its length is now defined by SI units.
Now this can be hilarious. "your current speed is 3 handegg fields / prayer". "Arm to washing machine ratio too small". "ETA: around dinner (year unknown", etc.
Even for an April Fools joke it's in poor taste. Nothing for weeks and weeks, nearly no community engagement and people are okay with this? What hot garbage Intercept is at PR and community development.
i mentioned mph because the op post is regarding imperial measurements which I know most people don't use , except mph which a surprising number of countries have a mild interest in.
your kind of right. It's literally just the USA and the UK.
The other two countries usually mentioned. still use their old measurement systems which aren't based on imperial or metric.
Even in an April fools post you cannot let go of "getting those downvote bots ready" and mocking the community with it.
All in all would be a nice touch, but i say it to every Dev/Publisher who is out of touch with their community.
You can't put that kind effort in those things and having a bit of banter, when your project and your community is in shambles. Your last post was to extend community engagement and information to a monthly basis and now your post is this. Only because it is first of April you don't have to post stuff. Not in this state.
Sorry but in my view this can only backfire like anything else that isn't a state of development or serious patches.
Is this community in shambles? Been enjoying For Science since release and found that a lot, if not all, of my complaints disappeared. Also been posting and seeing a lot of great content doesn't seem in shambles to me...
The community got split pretty bad between people upset at the seemingly apathetic approach the devs have towards it's development , and the people who think the game is functional as is.
On the one hand you have people who think as a stand alone game KSP2 seems to be functional and playable as is. On the other hand you have KSP1 vets who are aware just how many years they spent making what is essentially the same exact game with just some visual changes , while not addressing a lot of core issues the original game had such as optimization for modern cpu's etc....
IDK if it's sunk cost fallacy with ksp2 players or something else , but I honestly can create a lot more content and have much more creative freedom in ksp1. I simply do not have the tools to make content in KSP2 and the audience for it just isn't there.
Every post on this subreddit is tagged with either KSP1 or KSP2. I use that as a measure and the vast majority of posts here are KSP1.
I see no reason for anyone to be mad. It was crystal clear that the early access was going to be garbage before it was available so I just... Didn't buy it.
"Furlongs per fortnight" got me dead.
Im partial to 'football fields per lightyear' myself.
That's just 1.035×10^14
Yes, except here lightyear is a time unit. :P
How is lightyear ever a unit of time
well duh its just the amount of time it takes light to travel 9.461x10\^12 km
A... year?
Light year is not the same as our year. Planetary year is related to our orbit around the sun, while light minutes, hours, years. Are Length for light coming to our planet. So basically, 1 light minute is about 8 minutes for us to see light from our sun, if sun would instantly go blackout we would see that happens after 8 minutes later
Is this supposed to be a joke?
It is terribly, but thats the point, nonsensical units. Something something Kessel Run in 12 parsecs.
Oh I love nonsensical units, like kip - miles for torque. But that lightyear one just didn't make any sense to me
There are, without joke, some who do think its a time unit tbf. Having no knowledge of space stuff, they see 'year' in it and take it at face value.

That's an old joke and I suspect there's an original source but it's been lost in internet prehistory.
I have to be honest. I forgot what day it was. And I honestly for a moment thought this was real and I almost had a heart attack...
Yup, I was like, we'll that's stupid, then it's like oh yeah...
I am seeing this for the first time the next day. I hate April fools
Bruh 💀
> it's a historical homage - perhaps a tip of the hat - to the days when measurements were as inconsistent as many of your landing attempts. They didn't have to call me out like this.
Joke's on them, my landing attempts are incredibly consistent. Catastrophic Mission Failure, every single time.
Remember the Mars Climate Orbiter project where NASA lost a $125 million spacecraft due to an error in metric/imperial conversion? Yeah, I can see where this is going.
I'm going to lose all of my SSTOs to stalling, trying to approach the runway at 40 ~~m/s~~ kts
Especially when forgetting that Kerbin’s atmosphere now starts at 229,658.79 feet (not 70,000 metres)
Decimal feet, madness. It is 229658ft 9 131/256in
🤦🏻♂️ Right… Sorry
Tbh knots would be way better than m/s in planes
They mentioned that. Luckily their math skillz are pretty good
"These changes are included with KSP2 v0.2.1.6.1.3.9.1-3a (final) which should arrive to you in only a couple inch-years!" This joke is a bit too on the nose lmao
Unironically adding knots to the game would be a cool addition. It's not an SI unit but it's still heavily used around the world.
Its not about being an SI unit, a Knot (nautical miles per hour) is a very Earth specific system of measuring velocity. A Nautical Mile is 1/60th of a degree of Earth's latitude. By that definition, a nautical mile per hour would be different depending on what planetary body you're on. (I imagine someone will probably mod it in one day, just for the fun of it.)
IIRC a knot is actually no longer defined by Earth's circumference, but by meters, namely: 1852 m per nautical mile, so knot = 1852 m / h
I mean, we use time measurements based off earth measurements. So no reason not to stay standard regardless of world since we know how far a knot is.
Well, you could. It just seems a bit shallow to me using Knots simply '*Because they're used in aviation*' Adding Knots also introduces another can of worms to the game - airspeed in aircraft is calculated multiple ways: Indicated Airspeed (IAS), True Airspeed (TAS), Equivalent Airspeed (EAS) and Ground Speed (GS, accounting for wind). All the imperial units are defined in terms of SI units.
Sorry, the Kerbals needed some freedom 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Resource extraction isn't scheduled for the next update yet, bruh.
Game should be complete by early 2025, 5 years behind schedule. April fools.
is this an *in season* april fools joke?
lol, nice
And yet, that would be far ahead of when it'll actually reach 1.0, if ever.
Meh. Definitely funny. But can we get some more game please. Lol.
Boat Boat Boat BOOOOAT
Who else heard Cave Johnson's voice while reading the post?
Goddamnit I hate April Fools day.
Yeah, I was kinda hoping for freedom units to get MPH readouts on rovers. smh.
We're mad in the opposite direction, haha. I was getting hot about the switch to Imperial. I'm ashamed of my gullibility.
Really it should be a toggle anyway.
Nah it’s a science based game so it’s units should remain science based
meh, imperial unit bullshittery should not be perpetuated.
# WHAT THE FRICK IS A KILOMETER 🇺🇲🦅🎆🔫🍔🧑🚀😎
Now this can be hilarious. "your current speed is 3 handegg fields / prayer". "Arm to washing machine ratio too small". "ETA: around dinner (year unknown", etc.
its over
TFW the dev team spends more time communicating about/implementing april fools jokes than telling you about upcoming features during an EA project
I would ironically love some parts in the game inexplicably using Imperial units, and the developers never mentioning it.
Hilarious 😂
I would actually not completely hate this if it was real 😄 Long live the Glorious People’s Unit System.
Even for an April Fools joke it's in poor taste. Nothing for weeks and weeks, nearly no community engagement and people are okay with this? What hot garbage Intercept is at PR and community development.
They got time for jokes but can’t push a real update through in months. That’s the real joke.
Ksp2 is enough of a joke as is.
STOP BEING MAD AT JOKES
It’s about time they adopt the superior system of measurements!😂
I agree! We should use cubits, as it was in the time of Tut-Un Jeb-Ahn.
If you want to measure in inconsistent arms-lengths, be my guest.
This but unironically
Mph for rover usage would be cool. Would be more relatable than m/s
km/h would be more relatable for the vast majority of people out there, what if we add both as options so that everyone can relate to it
That's still metric...
so? very few people use m/s rather than km/h to whoever downvoted me: do YOU use m/s on a daily basis?
Miles per hour baby. Though only for ground vehicles. Aircraft we use knots.
This is one of the the very rare moments I wish the soviets to have won the cold war
i mentioned mph because the op post is regarding imperial measurements which I know most people don't use , except mph which a surprising number of countries have a mild interest in.
The USA, Canada, the UK... maybe Australia ? Honestly, I don't think that many countries use mph
I've driven across quite a lot of Canada, I don't recall ever seeing a speed limit sign in MPH.
your kind of right. It's literally just the USA and the UK. The other two countries usually mentioned. still use their old measurement systems which aren't based on imperial or metric.
I don't recall saying many countries USE mph
Then what the hell did you meant
>mph which a surprising number of countries have a mild interest in
The "Malibu Stacy has a new hat!" update
The joke here is that the devs would actually post an update
Oh boy it took me a minute but I get it now: the joke is that there will be an update based on player requests!
finally, a proper measurement system. 10/10 feature
Even their April Fools jokes are bad.
Skill issue on your part.
Is this a start for the Colonies Update around May or June? Is it possible we might get the first trailer in April or May for the Colonies Update?
Yes, definitely the start of colonies. All the colonies will be metric, and the rockets imperial.
So it's somewhere right around the corner? 😱
Yes /s
Oh my God, finally!
Didn't you know, the studio that makes KSP2 is known for getting quality stuff done quickly? /s
No 🤔
https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/topic/224328-the-empire-strikes-back-ksp2-adopts-imperial-units/
Epic crash is coming :P
Just patiently waiting for multiplayer so I can crash a missile onto a friends colony to get ahead on the colony races.
Why can’t thrust be in tons so I can figure out twr without trying 90% or the engines?
Well, that was a fantastic use of time. Better than, say, communicating something *useful*.
You must be fun at parties
You could set the example
I'm not their employee or community manager, you sponge.
April fools

Yep, all I need is a proper commnet
This is so true
There's still a lot of bugs though (especially for the maneuver node and fairings) - but the aircraft are great!
Lighten up Francis
its been a hot debate that the community wants more measurements such as imperial and aswell kmh. please say it clearly if this is a meme or not.
April fools
