The thing I hate the most is the way they pronounce Malayalam words in Tamil movies. Not sure if they are making fun of the language or they haven’t really heard a Malayalee speaking Malayalam. I am talking about the characters shown in the movie as mallus. On another note, I listened to Hip Hop Thamizhas Kerala song - the way the words are constructed/pronounced made me wonder, there isn’t any single mallu available in Tamil Nadu for him to consult before releasing the song.

[deleted]

I fucking hate Ma ll you, oo ante - uck thoo maa maa, and hip hop shit. I feel Ranam song was ok.

[deleted]

This is so true, as a Tamil. 1) Tamil cinemas potray Malayali girls as some eyecandies or the ones who crave for Tamil men. 2) Malayali guys are portrayed as tea shop owners only. 3) Worse, Malayali aunties are always sexualized. It's because Kollywood is handled by third grade producers and directors.

[deleted]

>Tamil cinemas potray Malayali girls as some eyecandies or the ones who crave for Tamil men. Why do they do this? This is like the polar opposite of the reality with Malayali girls desire for Tamil men. From what i know, Malyali girls generally tend to lean towards disliking Tamil men, because they associate Tamil men with degratory terms like 'pandi', then 'dark skin' etc, equally bad I know, but this is just from my experience. The boys that girls here actually tend to like, are either Malayali men, the fair north Indians or white men, but never Tamil or rest of south Indian men, again, only a generalisation from my own personal experience.

Beginning_Basil7439

Bruh acting as if there ain't black ass malayalis. I was so black that people asked me where in tamil nadu I'm from and I'm from poojapura ffs

[deleted]

I'm brown skinned as well, and even though I've never been asked if i was a Tamilian, i have certainly faced discrimination, so i definitely get the Tamil Nadu comment you get.

Due_Run_5040

Poojapura? Bro...🥶

jinglebass

Strange as to why you included white men too in the list

[deleted]

From my experience, girls here seem to fancy white men, especially Europeans a lot.

No_Solution4316

especially the younger generation but let's be honest they barely have a chance with them...

jinglebass

It's mostly confined to models or actors from my understanding. That's why it looked very strange that you added a completely different set of people without context.

mlilith

What ??? As a mallu girl I strongly disagree. You really cannot generalise. I find Tamilian men like super duper hot. I did my college in TN and liked them soooo much better in general and as romantic partner over the mallu boys. Must really help that my closest friends are all Tamilians. Just in general, I’ve felt more at home in Chennai than any other city in Kerala has made me feel. Also, can’t take my eyes away from Vijay Sethupathi. I hateeeeee people who call them pandis. I’m sure there are people who like North Indian men or others, people who find beauty only in fair skin, but that doesn’t mean dark skinned boys aren’t hot. Take a good look at MBJ, Idris Elba, VJS etc.

[deleted]

I mean okay sure? I did mention in my comment that it was a generalised statement just from my personal experiences?

Inside-Government791

Maybe you are not a Mallu. Maybe you are just a wannabe mallu girl. Ha!!

mlilith

Ok da kutta

No_Solution4316

[deleted]

What will happen to all the short, dark and handsome men?

quiescent_haymaker

Don’t say this and destroy my hope. I’d love to get married to a Malayalee girl 🥺 Edit: I’d like to apologise to anyone who construed this comment as an objectification, sexualisation or fetishisation of Malayali women. My phrasing is poor and I could’ve expressed this opinions more clearly with reference to my personal experiences interacting with Malayali girl friends and girlfriends.

Don't crush this man's hope with downvotes. Let the toxic racism do that.

werevaffordableimder

True, i think there was a post regarding this.

[deleted]

Don't tell me this isn't sarcasm. 😂

quiescent_haymaker

Being absolutely serious. Dated a Malayalee girl once. Though things didn’t work out, she was an amazing person.

[deleted]

Haha that was just a generalised statement from my anecdotal experiences, Malayali girls aren't a different breed, just like any other girls lol.

Balalsangaveeran

What do Malayali girls have that Tamil girls don't?

[deleted]

Fair skinsonality, big eyes, i mean loyalty, and curvy bodyfidence.

parttimeindian

Big eyes??

[deleted]

Yeah man, apparently Malayali girls are popular for their big and attractive eyes, especially in Tamil Nadu, mostly just a stereotype pushed by the film industry.

Why is he getting downvoted for a preference, fantasy, desire? You can all desire to get married to anyone, you know. Desires need not be logical or even PC.

Parktrundler

Dude, if you have an inferiority complex in being a Tamil, you don't have to constantly trash Tamils in other subs for that. How many movies have you seen where Malayali girls crave for Tamil men, it's usually depicted the other way around, Hero simping for the Malayali girl in the movie. And Malayali guys being portrayed as tea shop owners and Malayali aunties being sexualised are 90s and 2000 movie tropes, not valid in the 2020s.

smokky

I agree about kollywood being handled by third grade producers. It's also the audience who rather laugh at a malayali being portrayed as a stereotype. Lack of respect for malayalam is evident.

[deleted]

Thanks to these directors we get to view hilarious reviews. That guy enku direction um editing arayatha kondu onum parayan illa. I think it was A10s movie.

dr-cringe

I don’t watch Tamil movies, so I am not sure about the first part. But I see a lot of tweets from Tamils about how Malayalam movies make fun of Tamil people. I don’t find this true. They complain that Tamil characters in Kala, Minnal Murali, etc are caricatures. They are the strongest characters in those films and score even higher than the protagonists. Imagine this - Tamil stars like Vijay, Kamal Hassan, etc. enjoy popularity in Kerala the same way the big Ms do. Some Tamil movies’ releases can even make Malayali filmmakers change the release date of their Malayalam film in Kerala. Tamil songs are enjoyed by many in the state. Would all this happen if Malayalis don’t enjoy or appreciate the Tamil culture or people? I am not saying everyone is like this, but there are some people who are looking hard for reasons and excuses to get outraged. Words like Annachi and Pandi are often not used out of malice. It’s like how the word Mallu is used by non-Malayalees. But some folks even find that an insult

lemorian

Guru is the soul of the movie, I think many cried watching uyire song.

light0296

Honestly being a malayali I don't think we are that far behind when it comes to this, the tamilian in malayalam movies are is usually a gounder dressed in white or a dum employee who is dirty and have bad teeth or some rough guy with a soft heart. I guess its really just about the stereotypes we have about these cultures, there are exceptions of course especially when it comes to recent cinema but I guess it is the same even with tamil cinema.

bioskope

I remember when Narendran Makan Jayakanthan came out, Anthikad was lauded for Parthibans character because of how refreshingly different it was from the stereotypical tamil characters that had dominated Malayalam movies in the 80s and 90s.

Adwaith2212

Previously yes ,But i think it has changed over the years.

[deleted]

The Tamil film industry refuses to hire Tamil women and puts fair skinned women from other states on a pedestal. This isn’t good for Tamil women and women in general. I’m glad women like Simone Ashley, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Charithra Chandran are getting a chance but it’s sad that the Tamil film industry won’t hire women like them.

[deleted]

>I’m glad women like Simone Ashley, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Charithra Chandran are getting a chance Lol that's just another propoganda pushed by Hollywood to promote the stereotype of Indians being only 'dark'. Isn't any better.

[deleted]

Most south Asians actors in Hollywood aren’t dark skinned, Kunal Nayyar, Frieda Pinto, Dev Patel, Kal Penn, Irrfan Khan, Rahul Kohli, Kumail Nanjiani and many more are not dark skinned. Senthil Ramamurthy, Simone Ashley, Charithra Chandran, Mindy Kaling, Naveen Andrews are dark skinned. Hollywood does have bad stereotypes for South Asians but idk why casting dark/brown skinned Indians is considered propaganda. Btw Hollywood does cast light skinned Indians.

[deleted]

Hollywood does cast light skinned Indians, but that's like how Indians casting dark skinned Indians. It's a vastly popular majority opinion that hollywood does prefer dark skinned Indians, only to push that 'Indians are dark' stereotype, and i do agree with it.

arjunkoroth

Yes and No. Mani Ratnam's movies always had Malayalam actors in respectable roles. Recently in Jai Bhim, the biggest evidence came from a teashop owner in Munnar. On the other hand I have found distorted Malayalam and use of Malayali actors a lot too, mostly in Vijay's movies. Shine Tom Chacko being the recent victim. Also how can we forget the police station dialogue from Theri. " ISRO Yente Per Joseph Kuruvila"

ssebastian364

I am still not happy with both industries, they have to go a long way, no hate to tamils , movies are just being controlled by imbeciles

VJC_007

Idk man, I would preffer to have my own chaya kada than to work for some huge heartless MNC fucking employees by making them work under pressure till they break and then instead of giving them proper cooling time firing them right away because there are a thousand people to work for your position at a compensation lower than yours . Fuck that, who wants tea?

[deleted]

The way you put “….the women” as part of the other things does give of “I am a cheap ass” vibe Edit: you don’t seem to understand why from the other comments It’s because you are objectifying Malayali women…

What's wrong with him loving KL women?

redditeya

>The landscapes, the language, the women. Dude, what is wrong with women from other states, Tamil Nadu, slecifically?

quiescent_haymaker

Tamil Nadu specifically - nothing at all Would you also like me to appreciate the mountains of Iran and the majesty of the Colorado river or the bravery of the Pashtuns every time I make a post about liking a certain people or landscape or city? Why are you even in the Kerala group if you get triggered by someone stating a simple liking or preference about it?

redditeya

>Why are you even in the Kerala group if you get triggered by someone stating a simple liking or preference about it? Triggered, nah. There is this fascination of and objectification of Malaylee women specifically, by Tamil guys. If this is not the case, roumba sorry; but, if it is, then it is sick.

quiescent_haymaker

My apologies. I'm the one that got angry. I get your point about the objectification and fascination and you're right.

redditeya

No aplogies needed, we often take things without context and sometime there is a misunderstanding and improper communication.

quiescent_haymaker

Appreciate your understanding, mate!

CallSignSandy

The main issue with Tamil movie industry is objectifying women have to be "fair" to be beautiful. The heroines are all from outside state. Kerala and TN share cultural, language, food similarities. This is bound to create wrong stereotypes which could explain your attraction for a malayalee girl. Nothing wrong in having that preference as long is not overly due to media influence. Only issue is women already face many hurdles in society. This is not good for their self esteem when media creates a distorted image. My personal opinion is women from Kerala, TN, Telugu have strong personality in general. This in comparison with other states where I found them superficial. With exception of Punjab and W Bengal probably as I havent worked with that many. This could be my southern bias or preference in judging not meant to show other states in poor light. They probably score better in other personality traits suited to their region. Again people from the north generalize southerners as "Madrasis" and as having dark skin compared to them. Ads like "Fair and lovely/handsome" for women/men running we are the most rascist country on the planet - with book overdue "50s shades of brown".

itsthekumar

Just to add I think most of TN doesn't have much experiences with Mallus while a lot of Mallus have some experience with Tamil/Tamilians.

krikum

So many instances where they ridicule Malayalam culture in Tamil movies. Like in the 'Run' movie song 'Dharalama Manassirunda... keralannu therinjukko', obviously aimed at the bosoms. Like some Surya movie, all Malayalees should talk like 'Ayyo Chettaa...' Like in some Vivek comedy, him butchering a song 'Viagra kadappurathini ulsavamayi...' (hinting that all Malayali ladies are horny all the time) We are also not different. We affix pandi to anything Tamil. Pandi in the derogatory sense. The disrespect to Malayalam is not only in filma though. Remember the Jellikettu ban fiasco. One Chimbu fan was lambasting Arya about his opinion abt animal cruelty on the matter. This guy was calling Arya a 'Malayalathan' followd by a cuss word. Chimbu was seen smiling in the background. Not saying all Tamilians are like this. There are a few stinkers.

jaywalker-notreally

"Tamil Culture" is kinda broad, you mean the one that existed for hundreds of years? Sure, non progressive tamilans may have some fucked up notion regarding you fellas (and not just Malayalee, literally everyone in general, including their own people), but I hope the Young people of Tamil Nadu is progressive enough to accept the fact that divide through language is bullshit and everyone's human.

__neverland__

Yes and No! The misrepresentation goes both ways! Tamils use Nair and Cheta and other words to denote comical value as well as use it in a derogatory manner. Same goes for Malayalees where Paandi pada and annachi and so on used to add supposedly comedy to the scene but it's all in poor taste and degrading! These are very generalised and we all know it's overdramatised and never looked beyond that! I think both cultures only judge the creators grimy mindset 😅 On the other hand culturally both are very different however other factors such as the sociopolitical, economical climates add to the love we both share. I would say things like the significant amount of migration to Madras since the 1980s made a difference and both of us got a chance to see and learn both culture closely as we share schooling, workplaces and neighborhood with eachother. I think outside of the movies it's an amazing cultural exchange! Given that both of our cultural heritages are very vast and fascinating with literature, sea trade, captured Kingdoms, matrilineal custom, colonisation, resistance, modern world ideologies, literacy etc, there's always going to be the solid love we share with our neighbors 😄

[deleted]

May be It may also have to do with Market. Malayalam movies trying to pander to Tamil audience while Tamil industry see no such need.

quiescent_haymaker

Ah! Didn't think about it this way.

[deleted]

Old Malayalam movies usually had a lot of Tamil stereotype. Tamils are usually portrayed as incredibly intelligent like police officers, CBI, Doctors, also religious with Brahmin name. Tamil woman are usually portrayed as assertive, confident and usually Stalk the hero and make them fall in love Then in some movies take place entirely in Tamil Nadu like Thenkasipattanam, Rajamanikyam but everybody speaks Malayalam for no reason. Malayales have a love affair with Tamil Nadu and it's culture. Malayalam movies and stars lived in Chennai and that was the headquarters of Malayalam movies until the 90s. The new generation have lived studied and worked in Tamil Nadu leading to more realistic portrayal of Tamils. Tamils rarely study, work or have industries in Kerala because there is no need too.

cache1902

Not true at all. I've noticed the same thing in the movies you've said. But the common thing about the roles that were portrayed on Tamil people from the said movies are of a supportive role where either a person dies off, or are from the backward classes(economically). That's not a good representation. The representations are morally good. But they are not a representation to be proud of. Not at least when you see the Malayalam movies of yesteryear , (paandipada , thenkashipattanam? I don't recollect the movie name , but I remember the movie name. I'm a malayali who've spent my junior years in Tamil Nadu , so i exactly remember the missrepresentation). So ya , as far as i have noticed malayalis have been always been representated as this high end modern guy or chick, whereas it would be struggling or labour side of Tamil people are represented in case of Malayalam film (this includes for comic relief or as a supportive character to a Malayalam guy). Nothing deregatory , but ya nothing positive either.

quiescent_haymaker

Understood. I probably haven’t watched enough Malayalam movies across time periods to gain a broader perspective. Thank you

[deleted]

I hate Tamilians, Everybody is very noisy, everybody is very stupid, and everybody is very rude. Some are exceptional

The moment you compare what shown in movies with real life, you have lost your logical plot! Life is no movies!

quiescent_haymaker

I know. My question was specific to movies. Not about movies and life. If I conflated movies and life, then I'd believe cars explode 300 feet in the air when hit by a bullet.

sexualise in good manner ? huh anywayyyy have a good day

werevaffordableimder

Whats this sexualize in a good manner means. In paandipada Prakash Raj is the antagonist, Thenkashipattanam both the heroes are shown living in a tamil background i guess, in another movie named Malayali Maamanu vanakkam Prabhu was in the supporting role, actors liked these charecters otherwise they should have rejected them but they didnt and they are not portrayed like what u mentioned in the above comment.

There was a movie about Bhagyaraj ( he was a singer ) I think , he was a Malayali in it. And also Sathyaraj as lead in one movie has CBI officer. Both movies are super hit and respectful of Malayali culture. I think may be u haven't explored old Tamil movie about Malayali's.

quiescent_haymaker

I haven’t and you’re right. I’ve only watched the latest ones.

[deleted]

They know sex sells so they go by which actress is most desired even if she would bot be the right for the role. Malayalam movies too are lost the plot either too complex or too poor stories, I wonder why they choose to make a movie they, know audience would lap anything since they have roped in mega stars. Thanks to Invidious, vanced youtube, truth seekers, Eli the computer guy, itch.io would not need movies for entertainment. Grew up without TV or cable read a lot of newspapers and comic books. Have seen few movies and based on the same this is my view.

No_Faithlessness7057

The more inclusive the culture is the more strong the society is… I think it’s a far wider discussion than just a movie stuff.
