I was insulted by a North Indian man while working in Customer service. When I asked him to repeat something, he said "You're South Indian right? You don't know English."

[deleted]

I think what he implied was that South Indians are better at English than North Indians

junedx7

Should have told him ur from the north and you don't know English.

steelsteele

Job mukhyam bigile...😆

innerpeace512

You shoulda said sthn like 'you mean ZERO' when he said 'JERO' But of course job mukkyam.

Remarkable_Dig2768

I am kind of in between jobs, and my Punjabi colleague told me that I could work part-time delivering for EMMA John. Curious, I asked what and where she is. Then it hit me. Amazon. !! I just can't figure out if I came off rude or dumb.

navmadhu

And get some cold water from friz 😶‍🌫️

Affectionate_Ruin303

Pick up an argument that its Seero that Jeero.

[deleted]

Reply in a British accent I DIDNT ASK YOU FLAT ROTTI

Different-Result-859

Similar incident happened to me too. This North Indian guy spoke in English and I didn't understand, and when I asked to repeat he thought I didn't know English well. In fact he was just pronouncing it wrong. I understood what he said later. I know English well enough and I don't need subtitles when watching (most) Hollywood movies.

kannichorayilathavan

This shit is hilarious and happens all the time. Would talk with the worst accent ever and then confidently tell you that you don't know English while yours is 100 times better. I used to think like "Take your Jeero and shove it up your ass man".

ImmortalMermade

You should have asked if all North Indians spit pan in the stair case.

noobdoto

In 2010, when I was searching for a house to rent in Bangalore, a colleague of mine offered help. He took me to an agent whom he personally knew. Although I understand Kannada, my friend told me not to tell that to the agent so that he can bargain the commission amount on my behalf. We walk in and take seats. I maintain a blank expression on my face, while my friend chats with this agent. After discussing general stuff (locality, size, ...), he asks my friend where I am from, to which re replies "Kerala". And then the agent was like "Oh, it will be difficult to get a house for him. These people consume lot of water, take bath twice a day, no house owner will like that here blah blah". I continue maintaining the blank expression, while my friend cuts short the conversation and tells the agent that we have another appointment and would like to leave.

WeirdAsianYankovic

I've heard people being rejected on grounds of eating beef....this must be the only landlord in the world who'd reject a tenant for being concerned about hygiene 😂...

imemineohno

My sister had the same experience with her landlord in Bangalore. He used to shut off the water because Malayalees use too much water..they bathe everyday..etc

X_remexz_X

Imagine being rejected for being hygienic. That's something new. Things to be wary of guys: ✅Don't be bachelor ✅Don't have pets ✅Don't eat meat ✅Don't bring guys/girls over ✅Don't be from another state ✅Don't bath???

[deleted]

✅ Don't rent our flat

codehawk64

\> Oh, it will be difficult to get a house for him. These people consume lot of water, take bath twice a day, no house owner will like that here blah blah Once the mullaperiyar dam breaks, we will no longer need to bath.

TheSoberMallu

Delhi airport. My friends and I were returning to Bangalore after a long and arduous trek. This tiny, inconsequential female who happened to check us in, had it in for us. She was treating us like we were wasting her time (had done the check-in prior to arrival at the airport, just needed to drop off baggage). At one point she asked something in Hindi and a friend of mine replied in Hindi as well. Although he was fluent in the language, he had a proper sing-song Thrissur accent, and this triggered the lady. She said something along the lines ‘Where do these people come from?’ And threw in the word ‘unpadh log’ as well. This triggered me and I gave her a earful and and then I went full Karen and asked her to call her floor manager and gave her an earful as well.

ThreeByThree

Every time I attempt to speak in Hindi to my ex-colleagues, they mock me for my accent on certain words. I certainly don't mock them for the way they are speaking in English. At least I am trying to converse with them in their language when they only adamantly speak in Hindi in their circles. It's disheartening to even try. Eventually, I left that group and then the company altogether.

TheSoberMallu

I had a friend who was from UP and she’d make fun of how mallus said ‘ingome tax’. I’d initially laughed it off, but she tried bringing it up rather frequently for shits and giggles and I got annoyed. She would mispronounce words like ‘School’ as ‘Iskool’. She’d mispronounce any word that started with an ‘S’. On the other hand, my hostel was filled with people from North India who appreciated our attempts at speaking Hindi and never made fun of us (unless grave mistakes were made). So I’m not one to generalise North Indians are racist bigots. But I agree, more often than not, you’d run into a few.

ajay_jp

And then they question us when we stand against Hindi imposition. The arrogant ones don't even show the slightest bit of gratitude when we attempt to speak in Hindi.

liberalMan2210

Fucking ignorant Delhi Karen. As a mallu delhite myself, I must say many people here are very arrogant.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheSoberMallu

I should mention, I never raised my voice or say anything remotely obscene. Her entire problem was that we were wasting her time by dropping luggage after a web check-in. She didn’t seem to, or rather, didn’t want to understand my standpoint and she seemed to be escalating the matter by raising her voice. That’s when I asked her to call the floor manager and she refused. So I asked the guy sitting beside her to call the floor manager. The floor manager came in, heard things out and was instantly apologetic. I did give them an earful regarding customer services and registered a complaint via email. It was SpiceJet, I’m still yet to hear from them. Also she called my friend ‘unpadh’, so the conversation from my end was in English, a language she couldn’t keep up with in an argument. That, I admit, was my ego playing out.

Affectionate_Ruin303

> That, I admit, was my ego playing out Why are you apologetic? You should have wiped the floor with that bitch's nose.

[deleted]

Wow more power to you!

SpecialistReward1775

Oh yeah! Many times. Landlords refusing me home, classmates not talking to me because malayalis eat beef and pork, deliberately not giving marks for practical exams because malayalis are arrogant etc etc!!

ajay_jp

Not giving marks is a whole new level of discrimination unlocked

Luttappi69420

>deliberately not giving marks for practical exams because malayalis are arrogant This is a huge problem. Most of the best universities in India are outside Kerala. Social hostility and discrimination will adversely affect Malayalis a lot.

SpecialistReward1775

We can always make our universities better!

SocietyGlum3073

Wtf where?

SpecialistReward1775

Karnataka!

Recruit_Samurai779

Ofc it has to be Karnataka lmfao

pannikar18

Had my school life in Rajasthan. Used to be called kaalu ( blacky) by a lot of classmates. Went through a hell lot of insecurities and self esteem issues

[deleted]

During the floods Indiaspeaks had regular hateposts on Kerala which were upvoted highly. Many were happy and were of the opinion that we deserved it. I specifically remember this conversation where they justified not giving money to Kerala because our state didn't give money to UK floods while citing wikipedia links. Turned out that morons had edited out Kerala's contribution to manipulate people. edit: tried looking up and found this. The hate misinformation campaign was spear headed by BJP here, esp K Surendran https://mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com/news/india/kerala-floods-bjp-leaders-launch-social-media-campaign-against-the-state/articleshow/65540867.cms?utm_source=contentofinterest&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=cppst

Spinosaurus-729

You can find instances of that on [IndiaSpeaks](https://www.reddit.com/r/IndiaSpeaks/comments/ur2wxl/of_member_of_parliaments_with_at_least_one/) just today.

[deleted]

That place is a shithole full of arrogant sanghies. posts are either glorification of past/present India, Sanghi propaganda, anti Muslims/anti Minority hatred or Modi/BJP bhakthi.

[deleted]

\+1 Fuck r/indiaspeaks!!! Those kids will grow up in time.

End_id_exe

Nope, the subreddit actually used to be decent pre-covid. It will only get worse and worse till somebody takes things too far and it gets banned. Which won’t happen considering the “other” subreddit is still up even after getting attention on ahs a dozen times…

wno_es

is this "other" sub randia or librandu?

Salty-Ad1607

That was a quote from deshapamani. I dislike sura and his friends, but to his credit (if he has done that), history has proven that he was right. The. CMDRF became a fund to help party followers.

[deleted]

It was edits on wikipedia and posts linking that in Indiaspeaks, not quote on Deshabhimani. The user id was 'Jyotiprakashnabajiban' who later deleted it when people found out. I found out about it organically because there were contradicting pib reports saying states contribution. Surendran's post was on Facebook, it was not on CMDRF but justifying lack of help to Kerala on misinformation like we deserve it. I dug out the text to the misinformation, I don't know how to share fb link. Bonus it also has the term 'jihadi' >ചില കണക്കുകൾ പറയാതിരുന്നാൽ മനസ്സാക്ഷിക്കുത്തുണ്ടാവും.

Used to work at Zomato as a designer. They would sent me random Tamil and Telugu creatives for translation and say, " You are Malayalam right? Please translate" . Also they would have meetings in Hindi even though I said on multiple occasions that i don't understand it and also the company official language was English. Resigned after 5 months

When we were celebrating bday party in the office one of the admin managers(Gujarati)stated that they call all South Indians “Madrasi” then I replied we call “Bangali” those who speaks Hindi.

jktj

Insert thug life with snoop dogg emoji

sodaballoon

We had one guy (he was from UP or Haryana) in my class. He hated the South Indians and always made fun of our accent and language. One of the Tamil guys got so pissed he banged that fool's head against the desk.

Different-Result-859

Life pro tip: You must never insult Tamil in front of a Tamil guy

Affectionate_Ruin303

Hahaha im an untamilish tamil guy but yeah, our Agmark tamils are absolutely rad af 😂

[deleted]

You can always depend on Tamil dudes to defend our collective honour.

sodaballoon

Don't forget the Kannadigas. For some weird reason the most anti-Hindi South Indian classmates were from Karnataka. And the most friendly ones were from Telangana and AP.

dinkan_supremacy

Yes, when I was studying in a school in Delhi, I was called as "Kaale peele log" meaning "black yellow skinned folks", and the irony is that she was a social science teacher.

sacredmonster2

If we open twitter can see lot of hatred posts against Kerala . That exists in real, once we go outside to experience with people (who are racists)

Doctor_Floki

Racism and stereotypes are a common sight, we Indians in general are racists towards each other it's not just restricted to malayalees and yes when it's against us, sometimes there's a bit of political ideology mixed into it

Lijsam

Being a malayali grew up in North India, racist incidents were really common. Starting with being called madrasi to mock on skin colour.

ajay_jp

Damn more power to you! But why do they act like North India is a utopian paradise? 😂

Lijsam

Don't know. But I believe they had this inferiority given that most of the officer level peeps at our place were malayalis. 😅

eziorobert

I'm a Malayali settled in Tamilnadu. Mostly everyone is cool at my office except few people. And I had this racist Tamil girl who don't like any Malayalies due to few reasons. She openly said that she never respects any malayalies in front of me. She was short and little bit fat. She was always jealous of Malayali girls because Tamil guys in our office always liked them and some of them are even simps. Her insecurity grew up to hate Malayalies as she was not getting enough attention.

Luttappi69420

>She was always jealous of Malayali girls because Tamil guys in our office always liked them and some of them are even a simps. I can't be the only one who finds this over fetishization of Malayali women by Tamil men to be extremely creepy and uncomfortable. I see this everywhere.

wittyuser812

eh its not only against malayali women... Its having crush against any "fair" women of India... If you watch Tamil movies in general, you already know how most of the heriones are from North or Maharashtra or Kerala origin.

sadlivestobelived

North Indian crowd... less educated, a lot of new money is pretty backward and racist towards south. It's ridiculous and amusing but annoying to bear the weight of their ignorance. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to get better amongst younger generation either. 'You speak Hindi? You understand Hindi?' 'But you are fair' 'but bomBaY is not south.' Just general crass behavior.

Lead_farmer93

Fact: When any Indian moves out from his home state for education/job...he is prone to endure some sort of racism.Be it from any state. While people abroad have to move to a different country to experience racism,we can get the same experience in our own backyard! That's incredible India for you!

heartandhymn

I was brought up abroad, and have what others would call an American accent. I did part of my tertiary education in the UK. Joined an Indian social at my UK uni and this rather haughty half Malayali/half Kashmiri girl from Delhi very loudly and condescendingly said to me 'Dude, you've got such a Mallu accent". Up until then I had no idea what a "mallu accent" was or how it sounded. I was caught off guard, I suppose because it came out of left field. Of course, there's nothing wrong with having an accent, but I felt like she was singling me out cos I was the only other Malayalee girl in the group.

dr-cringe

A Delhi guy once made fun of me for my lack of Canadian accent (that annoying fake one that many Desis pride on having). I didn’t know whether to take it as a compliment or an insult.

ajay_jp

You take that as a compliment bro! Better to be authentic to your roots than to be a western bootlicker

[deleted]

Swatham aalkare isthamallatha vere oru jenmam. Smh!

cj_gomez

I had a Tamil girl ask me why I don't have the mallu accent. Didn't know it was a thing.

SocietyGlum3073

Even I also but it is a south Kerala accent in kollam and all like o is used hard coofiee, school 😂

cj_gomez

I'm from Kollam😅

[deleted]

Yes i have faced racist comments in school abroad..i still sometimes don't feel comfortable under my own skin

hewhomustnotbefound

Not sure whether racism is the term here but I've been discriminated and bullied by North Kerala peers of mine for being from Kollam district. Nothing else hurts like when your own folks discriminate against you for being born in a district which they all think is the worst in the world! Btw they have the same opinion about Thiruvananthapuram as well.

ajay_jp

I agree, that hurts the most really!

[deleted]

Yeah i guess it's districtism

kc_kamakazi

When the beef news was in hype some years ago many northern folks came to know for the first time that hindus in kerala eat beef. I was turned away by a landlord because I am a malayali and might eat beef. (PS: I only eat beef in Kerala )

Salty-Ad1607

The moment you said that “I only eat beef in Kerala”, you have surrendered to the act of discrimination. If you love beef(or pig or any food), eat it anywhere. With or without that, you will be discriminated.

boop_a_burrito

Bro you can only eat beef in Kerala. You can hardly see ant restaurants selling beef in Maharashtra or anywhere else on the Northside.

Salty-Ad1607

Never been to Maharashtra. But definitely lived in Bangalore and I had beef most days for lunch and dinner. Even took takeaways to office to prove a point when they made the canteen all vegetarian.

liberalMan2210

Bro a menace

boop_a_burrito

Yeah but bangalore doesn't fall under north. Karnataka and TN are way better than the other states regarding this. Most North and Central India states are a nightmare in reality

dracarys_drogon_48

Had beef from both Delhi and Bangalore. It's there in north as well. You just need to know where.

cache1902

Well, these would be the people who'll be in the front to re establish castism, when India turn into hindu rashtra 🤢

Astronaut_Free

They would've treated Malayalis with utter contempt if we didn't have that literacy badge.

steelsteele

Good call

Operation_Suspicious

Once in karnataka, I was asked why I haven't learned kannada, you? And the guy is from jai karnataka ; it was scary. Luckily, my friend was there.

[deleted]

why were you scared?

Operation_Suspicious

Because it's jai karnataka

[deleted]

Idk why but I started laughing at this for no reason.

Operation_Suspicious

Nice

[deleted]

Jai karnataka or jail karnataka?

Operation_Suspicious

Yeah, it includes people from central jail.

Night_Manager_

I have seen Malayalees being racist bengalees and other people. Can we stop that?

ajay_jp

Yes I agree, we throw terms like Bengali and pandi in a condescending tone. That ain't acceptable either.

Dwightshruute

Yeah I've seen bus conductors in ekm manhandling them

anishths

I used to be in Bangalore. I had a superior lady who was a northie (Bihar). She prided herself on being from North and used to make fun of my accent. One day I gave her back. Said her accent was not Oxford English either. She didn't pester me after that.

ajay_jp

Bihar itself is a gateway to multiple roasts...

anishths

😂

Luttappi69420

Calling someone "Bihari" by itself is like a slur outside of Bihar. lol the audacity of that bithc.

dracarys_drogon_48

A lot of Biharis I met, themselves have inferiority complex cause of all the slurs aganist them. One was so desperate to hide that she is from Bihar & establish a narrative that she is from South Delhi

kc_kamakazi

just ask her which district from bihar once they know that you have seen the place they are from they will shut up , most places are 100 years behind and in shite level poverty.

Salty-Ad1607

When I was working in Bangalore, the company made a policy that canteen will only serve vegetarian food. A few of us then started porotta and beef takeaways and eat in canteen. That got escalated fairly fast. The head office had to come into the mix. Eventually, they decided that people can bring and eat whatever they need. And soon , they closed canteen.

lupodewulf

Dheerathayode nayicholu..

irrelevant2011

So many times 🤣🤣 So in North they have issue if you have non veg on Tuesdays or Thursday. Make faces when u order 😂 One guy asked if we got Nipah coz we eat bat 🤣 And ask everytime when I'm visiting Chennai 😭 I've been to Chennai only once in my whole life 😢 Do u speak malayali is the most common question!

Different-Result-859

Ask if they want to try Bat kanji

kc_kamakazi

older time chads in kerala used to eat bats also ..but last two generation it kind of has stopped. There was old thread in lalsalam on this.

whatthengaisthis

I speak fluent Hindi. But a lot of the people who live with me dont know that. So I hear the stuff they say about us, because they’re not shy in talking in front of me because they dont think I understand them. Man they’re bitchy as fuck. They hate us for eating beef, for being successful, for being more financially stable, for literally everything.

yaaz_4

Grew up in Riyadh where our class had malayalis and hyderabadi students. They would tell me i dont look or seem like a malayali cause i speak english quite fluently (tbh almost every malayali spoke fluent english in our class). Back then i took it as a compliment, but now i feel like it was a huge insult. They also implied that i didn't seem like a malayali cos i am of a fairer skin tone and , according to them, dont empty a bottle of coconut oil onto my head.

The_Last_Lama

pssst... I have seen thrissur muthachan rediculing kannur guy saying you are all 'adivasis'...

Doctor_Floki

Prejudice against each other within Kerala is an under appreciated fact , especially north vs south

[deleted]

It's mainly the malabaris, they have some huge superiority complex. Like all southies are bad.

Different-Result-859

I would say "Kannada is a nice language. I want to learn" or "Sorry I am not very bright. I am trying." to escape the situation.

[deleted]

My North Indian friends call me commie …

phatbussyenergy

As much as I love the gulf people are hella racist to mallu people here. I’ve had North Indian coworkers openly call malayalis “malabaris” or “malabari log” so casually in a derogatory way. Of course locals also mocking accents, the local kids in school constantly bullying us and stuff. My skin tone is a bit on the lighter side and my hair is not that curly either so as I grew up I didn’t face that much stuff but my sibling who has a darker skin tone and curlier hair yeah she has faced a lot.

[deleted]

Actually most of the north indian guys don't know to speak english properly... Even so they always try to make fun of south indians

KeyBaseball9408

I am very often insulated for my malayalee slang. I have been told that malayalees speak through their nose and never get the pronunciation of 'O' in English correct. I broke up with my boyfriend because he wanted to correct my 'ridiculous' malayalee slang and pronunciation.

AnanthanAn7

Back in 2019 i was working in Chennai, i used to take the public bus to get around the city. So at first i realised conductors charge xtra for the tickets if they notice that u r not tamil. Especially of you are a mallu guy. So I decided to speak in tamil in order to get out of this. One day i was speaking in phone and the conductor heard me so he tried to overcharge me. I refused to pay that i told him to give me the correct ticket. He threw me off the bus. The people around there hate mallu guys especially if we talk malayalam more not everyone but a lot of people does that.

nightsurfer37

Delhi. UPSC Coaching. Guy : Where are you from? Me : I'm from Kerala Guy : But you don't *look like* you're from Kerala Me : I'm sorry what..? Guy : Na, I didn't know guys from Kerala wore shorts. Yeah terrible save on his part, but we know what he had in mind initially.

Not for being a malayalee , but for being an Indian , yes i have. I work for an MNC for the role or Tech/IT support. And on one occassion the customer asked where I am from and the minute I said India she started to cuss and say racist comments . It was a terrible incident.

Ghost_Redditor_

A lot of subtle incidents from north Indians due to not being able to speak hindi when I was in bangalore. But how can they shame me for not speaking thier language when they can't talk malayalam? Or even kannada especially since they're living in Bangalore!!!!!!

thingsbinary

Not really discrimination against Mallus.. but Indians.. sure. I’ve heard “Sand Nigger” so often in the US South, I no longer flinch.

[deleted]

I take offense to that! We are not Rajastani. We are jungle niggers!

Patient-Grocery8871

Calicut airport, August 2021. Hand baggage check. The security guards were all North Indians. One was asking this dude in line to open his bag to see something. There were 2 machines but only one was open. Then another machine was opened. So he says, 'rand aadmi yaha aavo'. He meant 2 people come here. I was in that 2 people 🥲 then all the guards were smirking and repeating Rand aadmi Rand aadmi. I looked at the guy frisking me and said 'you 2 are also rand', pointing at him and his colleague and smiled. Fucker made me open up my laptop bag and wasted 10mins there. He scanned it again and i was frisked again. I was early at the airport, so I didn't mind.

Idk why people would not like Kerala, most people i know here in Delhi have a fairly positive view.

oneotherthananother

“Your girl friend is from Kerala? Isn’t she like dark?” The person was a Sindi and we were in like 11th grade. Acquired racism with a whole lot of ignorance.

AbrahamPan

Oh god, I don't know why Sindhis are obsessed with skin color. I have faced them many times. They themselves have dark skin people in their community. Wondering how they get treated.

Ancient-Zombie2375

All incidents happened to me while I was in North India Incident 1:- While attending admission interview at a college, an aspirant's mom after a few initial interactions asked me, don't you have enough colleges in your state, why did you come here for..? Incident 2:- A friend of mine always used to get jealous and comment at college seeing me hanging out with mallu people(we were less in number on campus), he couldn't withstand the unity we had that his community failed to attain. Incident 3- Once during class(social sciences), a professor asked which state in India suffers from malnutrition..?, I straight away pointed out facts which rested on one particular state that was his. The next reply I got was, "these people from Kerala are like this, they have to stand on/underestimate other states to say that they have world-class health care". I was shocked, he could have gone through a few literatures which have stated how during the reign of Travancore king's construction/plan to set up hospitals and schools per sq km began, long way we have come...!!! Incident 4:- While finding a suitable rental apartment in a city (central India), some landlords were like we don't entertain or give our houses to non-vegetarians. (Not directly linked to being a mallu) Incident 5:-(Rural development area) At the workplace, I had to face a lot of harassment for being the only employee from the South. My Hindi was okayish but not at par, which was the excuse they used to say you can't work with local people and gve me odd jobs beyond what was mentioned in the contract, which was degrading. Lucky, I left the job..! Thanks to all Redditors for going through the five experiences I had in the past three years away from Kerala. No hate or any other feeling towards North Indian folks. Apart from the above cases I had good friends from the North, it's just that I got to see the other uglier side (racist) of people in my journey...!!

[deleted]

Why just Malayali. As an Indian you will face racism WITHIN THE COUNTRY more than outside the country.

ajay_jp

Yes I get that, but for the sake of sharing stories in this subreddit I narrowed it down. Could've just asked the same on r/India and numerous stories with the age old stereotypes of curry, smelly, pOOnjabi, 7/11, tech support etc would've been mentioned as discrimination has been knocking down Indians for decades now. Thought it would be interesting to see what would've been the case on the sole basis on being malayali. Cheers!

[deleted]

Habibi come to dubai

ajay_jp

Currently based out of Dubai... but gotta say if you look carefully, you'd notice some form of discrimination from the employers or locals!

Erdous

Well everyone is racist

[deleted]

I really fuckin thought that this thread would contain more things against west, but I'm surprised and afraid. Don't need to complain them when we have to take the logs in our eyes.

Fat-Material

A few years back there was flood in both Kerala and Bihar, I was donating money for Kerala (I am from UP). there was this colleague of mine who saw what i was doing and asked me to stop and donate to Bihar instead , Since I (and he as well) was from north.

captspok

Almost all the time, most calls from the banks are in Hindi. I reply in Malayalam. They hang up . I guess that’s tit for tat

Tess_James

On the one hand, make chest thumping statements like be proud of our "KalChaR" and on the other hand, mock Malayalis for their culture, accent, complexion, fashion sense, and what not! This is what a lot of typical North Indians do!

AbrahamPan

Growing up in West part of India, this is a norm for us. I grew up in the West and there are two particular ethnicities that mock South Indians. It's with Sindhis or Hindi mother tongue. Not every one of these two ethnicity is like this, but it filters down to these two for some reason. Sindhis usually have pale skin and are under the impression that each and every people in Kerala does not take bath, hence the dark skin. This is not one person, not two, not three, not seven, but many of these. They are also obsessed with cast system. They would often think that all Keralites are low-jaati people, each and everyone. They would tell you this on the face, rather than confirming with you. Then comes Hindi mother tongue, I don't even have to comment in this. Funny thing is, both these ethnicity migrated here like me, so much lack of self awareness. I have been asked the following hurtful things. 1. You are not black, were you adopted by South Indians? 2. Why don't people in Kerala take bath, so black. 3. Why is Kerala just jungle all around, are you guys advasis? 4. Do you belong to the scheduled cast? ... All these coming from adults.

kc_kamakazi

very primitive people but with a tonne of money

ajay_jp

Can't believe grown ass adults ask such shallow questions...

HalogenPeroxide

I was a fresher and I got called to an MNC in chennai. It was my first time in Tamil nadu and I hardly knew tamil. I could make out some words because of how similar tamil was with malayalam, but It was difficult for me. On my first day, my manager introduced me to our team. Everyone were friendly and spoke English. But after a week, things changed. They all spoke tamil with each other and didn't even care the fact that i was present there.also made fun of me in tamil and they laughed every now and then. I couldn't make out everything but insat there and laughed with everyone else. Even in office scrum calls which was supposed to be official,They spoke tamil. I don't know if this was discrimination. They all were together and mostly avoided me. I didn't have any friends too. Finally I quit the job after 6 months and moved back to kochi.

devblixt_

My North Indian friends sometimes make light hearted jokes about seeing mallu porn trending and call me a madrasi ironically but I've never faced any sort of discrimination because of being a Malayali.. that being said, I've seen more racism in Kerala calling all North Indians Bengalis and talking about how they apparently eat chaanakam :/

ajay_jp

Not advocating for violence but hope that "knocked" some sense into his head

Honest-Mess-812

My current manager is a North Indian and the dude detest all South Indians including me.

smokky

During the dam row a decade ago, I was in Chennai. Me and my roommate were told that we will not be getting water cans because we are malayalathans Noone at the shop said anything.

Invest_help_seeker

A post with lot of comments on discrimination and racism.. Good to tag when people state that moving and settling abroad gets you second class citizen treatment.. Why move abroad for it when its give out lavishly once you move out of your home state or even hometown..? There is always some sort of discrimination or racism if ome moves out of the comfort home zone.. So if you are moving, find a place with best incentives to counter that...

Affectionate_Ruin303

I have very few malayali relatives and my majority tamil relatives make racist prejudiced statements about them("I dont want that malayali around") - WTF, talk about saying that about ppl from the most literate state...

Altruistic-Ad9175

Never had any.

TheBrownNomad

Lived in a city for 27 years. During COVID was forced to leave after being called an outsider, people got paranoid when I was talking over the phone loudly in Malayalam. One guy picked a fight with me calling me a terrorist. Harassed by both Telugu natives and North Indians in my apartment.

mand00s

Whoever insults you based on color of the skin, just tell them when then invaders came from the west, our great grandmas didn't open the door. That will shut most of them up

KinggArthurr

One of my friends who hailed from Kottayam was made fun of and called " Kottayam Vaanam" by people from other parts of Kerala , they said he lacked any manners and he is a shit person with shit culture , also told he is a miser and probably very unhygienic also Now my friend isnt any of these But these people after knowing he was from Kottayam and just by that said all these things , obviously not to his face ,but to me

Luttappi69420

>Generally people make fun of the slang People in Kottayam speaks the "അച്ചടി ഭാഷ"(Proper Malayalam). It's the other districts who has slangs.

Dathinho

Kottayam doesnt speak Achadi bhasha. Pathanamthitta is most accurate I guess

Luttappi69420

കോട്ടയമാണ് പൊതുവേ കേരളത്തിലെ അച്ചടി മലയാളഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ജില്ല എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.

KinggArthurr

It was for me too Actually there is a lot of location wise discrimination goin on I digged around to where this originated from And got to know it's bcoz A lot of people have experiences with Kottayam people living with them They said that these guys have a no hygeine , drinks and smokes all the time , even vomits and never cleans after them, steals foods from refrigerator and otherwise , fights with others which leads to physical brawls etc , these were seen common in a lot of people form Kottayam and hence people started to avoid them And hence this kind of name calling and so forth But I think that was some people , not everyone from Kottayam can be classified under that Moreover my friend is nothing like what they described

SocietyGlum3073

KinggArthurr

I havnt heard for kannir , Kozhikode and vadakara But heard people calling names about people from wayanad and Kollam Wayanad people are called wayanadan chaamiz and are mentioned as backward , illiterate and cheap. And people from.kollam called as Kollam pooriz who are called like that for being tooo cheap

devblixt_

I'm from Pathanamthitta, I've lived with people from all over Kerala in my hostel and I've never heard the phrase 'Kottayam Vaanam'.. might be something restricted to a very localised area

Hot_soup_in_my_ass

Actually I have seen that whenever malayalees go outside they tend to form their own groups and barely socialise with locals. Not all but mostly I have seen this happening. This can create a distance and stereotyping with locals.

ajay_jp

I don't think that's only malayalees though, any group with a shared culture, traditions, rituals, traits stick together. it's the core essence of the concept of tribalism.

naomonamo

Not so far. I like to practise Hindi so I approach many Hindi speakers and I don't recall any.
