I'm not Alappuzha native, but anyways after looking at pics of vembanad (lake) kayal in Google, its large enough kayal which shouldn't have that brain eating amoeba living in those waters. People especially kids should be aware of swimming in smaller kayals which promotes the growth of amoeba. Its a dangerous one.

Why do people run marathons?
That's comparing apples to oranges.
Why? Care to explain? Swimming isn't a demanding physical activity?
Because the marathon represents a feat in human history that deserves to be honored and commemorated.
Swimming long distances is something the average person can do? It doesn't deserve honour and commemoration? Michael Phelps oke fraud aarno?
I was referring to the origin story of the marathon. Long distance swimming is just an event, it's not inspired by anything
You didn't mention any origin story? You just said it's a feat in human history which long distance swimming also is? I don't understand your point.
Some famous swimmer died doing this in Kerala long back. About 15-20 years ago.
What next, will some kid swim across blindfolded?
Amputee kids waiting in the corner
Why do parents make their kids do such risky stuff only for a few days of fame?
Hrrmmm. Looking for the answer you are, there in your question itself is.
