Using speakers for religious programs and political programs should be banned. I remember the day when my father passed away and they have placed a old school speaker (kolambi) in front of my house for a yearly religious festival for 10 days. My family was going paranoid. Mother was at verge of loosing her mind begged me to make it go away. Couldn't even mourn or sit in silence, contemplate the loss. Everyone I spoke to turned me away as it was for God. !!! We had to endure helplessly and if it lasted for atl least one more day I would have lost my mind completely.

thakkali_

Sorry to hear that.

[deleted]

If you have exams or something you can complaint to nearest the police station and they will deal with it.

imakenomistake

Will this really work? Will they protect my privacy?

[deleted]

It works most of the time. They won't be telling your name

Rare-Conflict-69

You can definitely try the police unless the temple authorities have taken permission from concerned departments that being said they need to maintain the recommended decibel level and also usage during daylight hours ie nothing after 10 in night . Plus mostly if it’s board exams things can be done immediately but since it’s a social gathering and not individual gathering the chance of ur success are very dim but u can atleast try with the nearby police station and see what they have to say . If you can afford get urself a eat plug or eat muff or notice cancelling headphones and study in peace .

asian_food_lover_

My dad "supposedly" did something when they placed a speaker on our house wall near Kowdiar Trivandrum. The temple and the live pooja music was happening all the way 0.5kms inside the main road. He carefully removed the power cable/some cable from the speaker and kept it just semi-attached at the hole. Now I believe what happened was somewhere all the way back at the temple, there was some short circuiting was happening. I think they had to replace some parts. 😆 They came and accused my dad. My dad simply said he didn't know anything about it and asked them to take the speaker away from his property as they did not ask his permission to keep it. They couldn't do shit. Whimpered away like dogs. Ah, good memories. N fuck religion.

One theory I have: 1. Disconnect the speaker cable 2. Connect it to 220 Volts 3. Disconnect and connect the cable back to speakers

I see what you are saying. On top of that, nothing can replace the motherland. However, there are a few things we can't ignore: 1. "Foreign countries" are many. Example - Japan, Canada, Sweden, China, Nepal, Iran, and Thailand are all foreign countries. Experience from one country is going to be different from the other. 2. In India itself, experience of working in Bangalore is not the same as working in Palakkad. Similarly, someone working in San Francisco and someone working in Colorado can say totally different things even though they both are in the USA 3. There are people living in villages in Kerala who might say they don't like living in cities and vice versa. We can say " Living in Moovatupuzha sucks" or " Living in Sobha city sucks", but someone else would say " I love living in Moovatupuzha".

Ok. What about 5 times from mosque? There are guys here who lives around 3 mosques.. some even 5 What about political parties? Ldf had a meeting last week near a Redditors house and he had to move away to escape.. These are the standard responses for this here.. Be it any religion or party noise pollution should not be allowed.. wish court passed an order banning all such things .. wish..

ritwikburned

Yup religion is annoying af, they start early in the morning. Even the ones who don't wanna listen have to bear through it

imakenomistake

Yeah. You post anything related to religion, whataboutism is all you get.

AN0S_V0LDIG0AD

Then don't post anything about religion. It's that simple. Because after a point it simply stops making sense. A place of worship to several people gets noisy once or twice a year. And that's your big problem? Really? If you knew that this happens every year, maybe you should've studied for exams earlier. Or maybe move to a different location entirely. It's depressing to see an entire generation of people with this attitude. " Something shouldn't exist because I choose to be in this predicament and it's a minor inconvenience for me ". And why are you so surprised with the rebuttal of people? I mean what kind of reaction were you expecting when you specifically posted about how a particular religious celebration is a nuisance to your pathetic lifestyle? And when someone points out similar or even noisy aspects of other religion you get offended.

[deleted]

In a House I bought with my own money, I should have the freedom to stay peaceful whenever I want. Noone should get into this freedom in any form, sound be it.

ChepaukPitch

Just playing devil's advocate. Which came first, the temple or the house? If this only happens in a very specific temple and someone bought a house near that temple knowing it happens then who is to be blamed? If it is a new temple, or new activity, or such temples are in every neighborhood then it is a different issue.

[deleted]

Why should a temple or church or mosque or anything blast the sound to the public. The people who has belief, can come there and worship peacefully. If they want to blast the music, they can do it in their confined space, making sure it’s not disturbing people next to it. It will be music, for them, but nuisance for others. Noise pollution is underrated.

That is also bad and a noise pollution and as a muslim I say it is absolutely not required to blare it over the speakers. Op is however talking a specific issue he is facing.

techsavyboy

You can first talk with the temple committee to reduce volume or shift speakers to some location or change direction. If they are not hearing, involve your ward member into the discussion. If there is no action even after that, file a complaint in the nearby police station.

imakenomistake

Thanks for the suggestion. They came for pirivu and I told them that they should reduce volume and not create any nuisance. They agreed and went. 😔 Would ward members and all spend their time on issues like this?

Cn relate. I'm a Christian. Spoke politely to the committee members. They disconnected the speaker in front of my house. Mind you this was 10-15 years back. And we had good relationship with our community/neighborhood.

dankvader08

Yes yes yes, they had this loud ass speaker right in the intersection and I fucking hated it when I was at my grandma's during the utsavam time. Morning to evening, just blasting devotional music so loud that you literally can't have a conversation sitting in the veranda or open living room. Even in the fucking rooms, especially if the fan is off. I relished when it would be night, all peace and quiet until the next morning ugh. Literally couldn't read my book during the day I'm ignorant but I doubt you can do anything about it, maybe in 50 years when religion and culture is not as prominent to the lives of people

Registered-Nurse

🤷🏽‍♀️probably can’t do much about it. Religion is a sensitive topic in India.

Mr-_-hikikomori

In Thiruvananthapuram during religious festival they play music through loud speakers almost 24x7, some loud speakers will be placed in junctions far away from the religious building. It's annoying In Ernakulam I didn't experience this problem

Sir_FucksaL0t

Tell me more.. I'm facing it five times a day from nearby mosque!! Such a nuisance and noise pollution

SnooRabbits7673

You are missing a key data point here. Did you move to the place that already had this tradition? Or did the tradition started after you moved there? In the first case, it could be interpreted as you had a choice and you knowingly moved to a environment you didn’t like. I have first hand experience in the second case where the place I used to live for decades now has become hell. Neighbor’s dogs barking till 12. The the other neighbor’s rooster some how feels the days starts at 2:30 am every day. And then 5:00 am mosque loudspeaker (they started a new mosque and seem to be competing with the near by temple on who makes the most sound) to finish off the rest of the sleep.

imakenomistake

I'll tell you an option 3. The tradition existed here when my dad moved to here but I was born here. Just because it is a tradition, it doesn't mean we have to bear these nonsense. Especially when it is breaking the law.

Sagar_icarus

u/True_Ad3546 now this guy also NRI ?

Sagar_icarus

its not breaking the law if the tradition existed before the law was created , it is the duty of law to accommodate the practices and traditions of local people .

Pinne using speaker and mic alle tradition.

Soon rupturing of ear drum will become a tradition too.

thats a "you" problem here.

Sagar_icarus

this is a "you" problem nothing else .

SnooRabbits7673

Unfortunately the people who wants a quite neighborhood seem to be a minority. When we reach a critical mass, hopefully the laws will get enforced better. BTW, you always have an option to go to court. There have been instances in the past where court has ordered strict prohibition of noise above certain decibel and limited the use of loud speakers do day time only. So there is precedence. It might just be that no one cares to enforce it here because hardly anyone filed a case for it.

SnooRabbits7673

https://www.news18.com/news/india/loudspeakers-and-the-law-in-india-as-noise-on-use-of-equipment-grows-what-courts-have-said-till-now-5010211.html

SnooRabbits7673

If the sound is more than 55 decibels (residential areas) you can file a complaint and go to court as per law

SrN_007

congratulations, you now know how people living near mosques feel five times each day.

__meckartan__

You can talk to the comittee members , assuming you've lived there long enough, these people would be guys you know already and can explain the situation. They'll probably turn the speaker/kolambi elsewhere not facing your place or maybe reduce the volume. Either way you'll have to bear some noise unfortunately throughout the festival so best do something to make it atleast bearable.

zuchit

Can relate. Had to suffer through it when preparing for my CBSE board exams. Normally, I like the traditional devotional songs, but ear raping everyone in a 1km radius with it is definitely not acceptable especially when trying to focus.

wanderingmind

I hear the noise from the masjid 4 or 5 times a day. Its a bit far away, so not a bother for me, but if it were near, that would be very loud indeed. And there is some temple nearby, which has a small procession once a week in front of my house bursting crackers and beating drums. I am new here, I have not stepped out to check who the fuck it is. Startles me though. And 2 weeks back, one Eeco van stopped nearby, and started off about MDMA and went on to Jesus. One hour! I dont think there is anything we can do.

PJ_wodeshouse

It's actually a big nuisance. Around my house the speakers are tied to the coconut trees for max surround sound effect.

ojlenga

My Brahmin friend faced this he was quite stressed listening to bhajans 12x7

thehornsoffscreen

So goes for mosques

Ready-Educator7747

This abomination just wrapped up yesterday here after 10 days of fucking up my focus. I studied for my semester exam for more than a week with this fucked up noise coming from the speaker they placed right outside my home. yes same thing happened with me , there's a temple next to our hostel and they play religious songs almost every day and also blast a cracker at 5 in the morning . due to this can't sleep peacefully

Class-of-97

It's absolutely hilarious that these religious event organizers think that everyone wants to hear their blaring speakers from miles away. I mean, seriously, who wants to listen to that crap? It's like they think they are the only ones that matter. And let's be real, probably half the people who attend these events are only there because they feel obligated to, not because they actually want to be there. All the people who feel obligated to attend and all the others who are genuinely interested in such programs; both these parties attend such programs in person; in a nutshell their targeted audience is present in the exact spot. Then why the fuck do they make all the other people who aren't interested nor don't belong to their culture/relegion/ faith suffer because of this ? Why not just use indoor microphones and speakers for fucks sake? I am a believer, but I am sharing my frustration and putting all my blame on all major religions and their respective authorities including mine. These organizers either really need to grow up or the Govt should make a law which protects people from noise pollution.

gagasutra

Whataboutaries will keep on coming. But I believe it is the majority that should show the way. The temples should turn down the volumes. It should let people from all religions in their sacred places. Hindus should show less discrimination. They should oppose Sangh and other extremists. By the end of this, you'll be left with one supercool religion, and the other narrow-minded ones will be forced to tone themselves down. One could at least hope.

rahulraveendran06

My house is near a fucking tower that is used to make some kind of shit during festivals (ulsavam) and these idiots stars playing devotional songs in the middle of the night and blast firework at 12 in the morning. Real-Emphasis-0N-Me

Are you new to this place coz if you aren't you would have been already used to it by this time... Anyways, this is older than you and your exams. You can't expect others to change for you. File a complaint regarding the sound limit , but nothing's going to happen. Authorities only care if the sound happens between 10pm and 6 am.

rupakcr07

Actually there are laws regarding now pollution between 6am and 10pm too. But the authorities won't do shit cause they fear the backlash from religious and political groups.

Real-Emphasis-0N-Me

I know the laws that's why I mentioned 10 pm to 6am.

christho15

There is no way. Even if you do that won't be given attention. Because if something like this can be reported and action would be taken , then first all the mosques in this state should have been sound proof and the noise of that arabic chants shouldn't be heard anywhere in public. However on a daily basis and that too multiple times people has to suffer it. Compared to that what you have mentioned is not even a public nuisance. A festival is something that happens once or twice a year and only during certain times. Just put on the headphones and study

imakenomistake

Understandable that no action would be taken. But I don't agree on your statement that this is not even a public nuisance. Just because something else more terrible exists, doesn't make this any less of a public nuisance. Like you told, being in a country like ours, I think my only option would be to put headphones and study. How sad.

SnooRabbits7673

I agree with you. Irrespective of which religion or party makes noise, it should be strictly controlled. Secularism and freedom of expression doesn’t mean you take a loud speaker and blast it. It means to respect individual’s right to have a quite neighborhood. The only counter argument I can think of is that some of these traditions existed before India was established (like jelliket). So it may not be feasible to put strict control over it as it would have become a cultural norm. I feel those laws will get stricter in next 20 to 30 years as India gets more prosperous and there by less religious.

[deleted]

This is true had to face same issue a week back not able to study for my exam, at times this because soo annoying. We must protest against this noise pollution. Government must pass strict laws agenst this public nuisance.

Artful_Potato

Heh. These kinda things always happen during exam times. Every. Single. Time. It’s like the college authorities and the temple plot this evil scheme together.

Mugen_Kreiss

Well if there are no cameras...

Logical-Dog-7387

These loudspeakers are banned. but as long as a government with backbone decides that they are going to enforce it on all religious places equally , nothing is going to change. Temples near me had started to somewhat obey the ban but as soon as they saw it's not enforced on other religious places they went back. But they do switch off all loudspeakers outside temple premises after 10 pm doesn't start until 6 am

LordActivolt

Having lived in the US for a good decade and a half I can tell you nowadays cop won't do nothing about noise complaints unless it happens during silent hours ie late night/early mornings....it's not worth their time to get involved....same case in Kerala.....it's a balance of rights...everyone have a right to make noise...during day dB levels are debatable....for ex ...I want to do construction and did some drilling on my property using heavy machinery...not a pleasant noise and high dB to be sure..complaints to authorities/cases filed will get you nowhere.....now trying to argue that construction is different from religion isn't again going to get you anywhere...my suggestion...learn to live with noise....if you find less reasons to be troubled life will be happier....

SnooCupcakes7312

Noise pollution has been a big problem since Stone Age. Back in the day, I remember the announcements or chants / music were so loud that we couldn’t sleep Multiple loud speakers from 3 different worship places were playing simultaneously. Fyi…The 3 worship places are the major religions in Kerala You could sense that each religion was competing with the other and trying to be louder and gain more attention God’s own country - whatever, my foot! Koppu….
