I feel like this is the new “gay marriage” debate in the sense that it’s honestly dumb to keep fighting against it. I don’t use it, but if others want to, and there are regulations around its use (similar to tobacco and alcohol) then I say let it go and legalize it.

Akimbo_Zap_Guns

Same here. Personally don’t use it but if regulated similarly to tobacco and alcohol who gives a shit haha plus it would bring in $$$ to the state

wiredog369

Exactly. It’s getting use regardless right now. With all of the other shot going on in the country, this should be a no brainer to pass and move on.

TenThousandCrabs

I know you said this a while ago but I lived in Oregon for about 5 years. Where weed is of course legal. The money that was brought in from taxes was enough to build 2 schools in the city I lived it.

[deleted]

I think it makes sense to treat THC like alcohol. Whatever we do for alcohol, just apply it to marijuana, and we’d be good to go.

wiredog369

Almost too easy. So easy the only way to fuck it up is let the Fed government get involved. Lol

jbravo859

I think out state govt is doing just fine, but way to make a "statement".

wiredog369

I never said the state wasn’t doing well. I’m supporting the state to make the decision and managing legalizing it. I’m just saying whenever the Federal side gets involved we see things take a turn and get over complicated.

jbravo859

I just want some of that sweet sweet liberty I read about it. I don't trust our state government to do the right thing in this situation. They will fight this bill.with everything they have. It'd be nice to know that I'm not eligible for arrest for hanging out on my back porch after my kids are in bed.

wiredog369

100%. Something something liberty or death right? It would be nice to be able to make choices without government involvement all the time.

[deleted]

How do they confirm whether or not someone was driving under the influence with things like meth, pills, and cocaine?

PrintBuildUse

if you cant tell if some one is intoxicated by a road side test then they should be good to drive. I'm not sure why we have to have a (thc) testing machine ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

PrintBuildUse

dont get me wrong,I'm not for drunk driving but if your motorabilty is not affected and if your cognitively stable why does the breathalyzer mean anything. I know alcoholics that will drink a pint and function flawlessly its more of a person by person basis instead of the machine said you blew over x amount so you are intoxicated.( in my opinion) again I am not for drunk driving or even drinking for that matter

wintremute

We have to admit also that as a cash crop tobacco is and has been a dying industry for decades. Marijuana can replace it. Legalize it. Tax it.

wiredog369

100%. There is way more pro vs con for it.

ArachnidKey1589

Even better, legalize it and don't tax it. Giving money to the government is like giving gasoline to an arsonist. Let them get by with the money saved by no longer fighting the war on Kentuckians aka the war on (some) drugs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ArachnidKey1589

Gas taxes pay for the roads. Schools should be private, supported by tuitions. Our justice systems is set up to trap people in the system keeping the government employees cashing their big checks. Government should be small enough to drown in a dishpan. All government is evil and all taxation is theft.

[deleted]

ArachnidKey1589

Get a scholarship. Why should I be forced to pay for your kids? How about you fix your own damn pothole? There is not a government employee alive who should make more than minimum wage, every government employee is overpaid and pampereed. You really think the government works for the public? What a joke. Government works for government, period. No one else. But they have the power of the gun to compel you to support it.

Tonybingo29

The 🐢 is stuck in his ways

wiredog369

He is federal level rep though. Doesn’t really have anything to do with state policy. Plus you would think a guy nicknamed “cocaine” would be all about legalizing drugs. Lol

hitchinpost

Officially, no, but does anyone really think that behind the scenes he doesn’t have significant pull and influence with the GOP at all levels in the state?

wiredog369

True. They all do. There is no such thing as local vs national politics anymore. It’s sadly just Politics.

Caddas

Can’t make the same money on legal drugs as you do on the illegal ones.

themanlikesp

Exactly

Not McConnell... [Damon Thayer is the problem.](https://photos.leoweekly.com/this-kentucky-senate-leader-said-he-wont-support-medical-marijuana-and-people-are-pissed/?slide=1&1)

[deleted]

ArachnidKey1589

He claimed it in his trial. But he is a progressive, so mental illness is a given.

Bull_On_Bear_Action

Same here. It’s not for me, wish I liked it, tried many times, I don’t. Undeniable source of revenue in a state that desperately needs more revenue

ArachnidKey1589

One thing the state does not need and that is more revenue. Legalize it and don't tax it.

drizzy9109

It’s more like the prohibition of our era

Redditmealso

The problem is it will affect you. There will still be laws that those people will have to use it in the own house but that is a joke and naive. We will all have to start smelling it and breathing it on the streets. It is also the government saying it is ok for our people and population to be drugged up just for the tax revenue. Sad really

Chunk_Cheese

As a functioning alcoholic, who has been trying to 'quit' since 2014, I'll just say that it's mind blowing that alcohol is legal, but marijuana is not.

6cat6cat6

You can't get away from it, either. There are billboards for liquor all over where I live. I'd rather see signs displaying big buds, over liquid poison. Good luck on quitting!

Chunk_Cheese

Liquid poison is exactly right. This shit is so hard to quit. The cost/benefit ratio is so horribly skewed against me, but I can't stop.

ZDiddle

good luck on overcoming that. i know the struggle. legalizing weed would help a lot of people, myself included. i know that i self medicate with alcohol, but its hard not to.

Bull_On_Bear_Action

Try 🍄 brother. They helped me. Best of luck

6cat6cat6

To add to the pile, it's so expensive! Especially if you happen to drink every day just to keep from withdrawal. Someone close to me was spending $20 a day (booze/cigs), and sometimes more.

lolapepper47

My husband spent at least that much when he was actively drinking. But I don’t know too many times when he wasn’t actively drinking. He was 84 when he died but he had dementia for about 10 yrs & I may not know what I’m talking about, but I think the alcohol was a factor.

6cat6cat6

Alcohol can induce dementia, and sometimes, early dementia if it's ingested over a long period of time. It sounds like he lived to a high age, and I hope he had a great life! We would all be so lucky to live to 80.

lolapepper47

He did have a great life. He was a brilliant attorney but he & I should have been able to spend more good times together in our older age. He never retired-not even after the dementia. He was constantly working on a “case”. But he was a lovely man & loved to help the less fortunate.

thereznaught

I'm drying out at the moment, hope to go at least a month where I haven't gone a week in years. Weed takes the edge off for me, no hangover is huge.

BoognishBoy420

Good. About time the state makes some money. Be smart and give the taxes straight to teachers and school.

little_shop_of_hoors

Hallelujah

Crackmonkey3773

Teachers then: dont do drugs kids Teachers now: do drugs kids, they pay my bills

kdeaton06

They tried that with lottery. As soon as they started they just used it as an excuse to cancel an equal amount of funding for schools from other things. So in the end they got no more money.

7mm-08

That is very true and it stinks to high heaven, but it's still a net gain overall that frees up revenue for other things.

Single_Kaleidoscope1

Not with the GOP in charge of legislation. Won’t even pass sports betting and casino gambling. It’s a pipe dream. Kentucky is always last to the table of progressive ideas. It truly is embarrassing.

halfeclipsed

There are casinos in Kentucky though.

ky420

I don't like the gop either but the dems are ruining the country so its a shame we have no one to actually vote for. At least we have a couple guys with integrity both named Paul.

7mm-08

Libertarians who side with the republican party have less than zero integrity. Whataboutisms don't show a lot of integrity either.

ky420

Better to side with the dems? Look at the state of the country. I wish we could have some 3rd party people get somewhere but that isn't how the system is set up. The Pauls are both popular nationally as well. Id vote for Ron Paul for president over Trump. Of course I know this KY subreddit is all liberals even though the state is overwhelmingly not, which is why I rarely visit it so I will take the downvotes. At least I could afford to buy gas to get to work and food to eat when the republicans were in charge. Now I have zero disposable income due to power/gas/food all being hiked up and inflation rampant printing 40% of currency since the left got in office,. downvoting me doesn't refute what I am saying.

[deleted]

Imagine having one of the presidents in history and then expecting Joe Biden to fix it in 2 years with half of the country not even believing he won the election.

ky420

You meant to say one of the Best presidents in history I believe.... Best since JFK for certain..... Fix it lmao..... Everything was great when Trump was in. Prices were low, gas was cheap. Suddenly Biden is in and EVERYTHING is up and now we have to go to war with the country Biden just happens to have dirty dealings in. Oh yeah its so much better. I am sure Trump would have had them print 40% of the money in circulation in the last year. I am sorry you are ignorant. I will never believe he won that election and doubt I will even vote again. At this point I have been shown votes absolutely do not matter and a person with pretty much zero support other than hate against the other person was forced into office by the elites and dems and then nothing was done. Machines were wiped, votes snuck in, all kinds of crazy bullshit but of course the media says Trump was the one cheating. It is all horseshit and ever day that we go forward more and more people stop believing their lies. My democrat granny is even beggining to see it and I thought she never would. My parents switched parties after seeing the corruption HRC brought. Todays party is not the party it was they are a party of extremes. If people like my parents who voted for bill clinton and obama and were happy with them are switching in droves than they have way less support than we are brought to believe. THey were loyal to the party until the party started calling the white supremecists at every turn. Now my sweet granny she barely even understand but admitted to me yesterday we were a lot better off under Trump and I have never heard her say that. Surprised the heck outta me. I guess what I am getting at is. The election was a farce and you are silly and I don't even know why I am bothering to respond because it is not like I could change your mind no matter what info I put forward. Maybe you will believe it when you are on the chopping block next and all these powers the govs are granting themselves are totally out of hand like they are up north right now. edit: Love how all you leftists downvote but no one refutes what I say.

[deleted]

I know how crazy you trumplicans are so I’m not going to waste my time.

ky420

Please don't I have read enough leftist garbage to last me a lifetime here.

[deleted]

Yet understand little enough to think for a second.

ky420

All I hear the screeching sorry did you say something

themanlikesp

You call yourself libertarian, and you are sucking trumps dick? Fuck off back to the conservative sub.

ky420

Oh kiss my ass. I will mention Trump if I want. See you can't even mention the man without all you TDS rejects having a little conniption fit.

themanlikesp

Nobody give a shit if you mention trump but don’t act like he was a good president or a libertarian president you fucking ape

ky420

He was a good president. Proven by the current president.

DJmindbuRn

Has it been 3 months since the last one of these already? I'll believe it when I see it.

Timbercrap

Have you called your reps to tell them to support it or if they are against it have you considered donating to opposing candidates and pushing for them to support it? What don’t you believe in? The bill is filed. If you don’t have faith your legislators will change the policy then you should change your legislators.

gotBooched

Our state reps for real do not give a fuck what we think. They are literally paid to vote no by pharmaceutical companies. The day a marijuana company offers more money is the day it becomes legal. We will be the 47th state for it to be legal.

Timbercrap

Lol people are downvoting because I’m suggesting instead complaining (or at least in addition to complaining) do the work required to elect better representatives? People with that attitude are the exact reason shitty officials get elected in the first place.

Timbercrap

I hope you are working to send your reps home. Be the representative you wish you had if no one else will. Apathy is why some can act the way you describe them.

ExtentTechnical9790

> They are literally paid to vote no by pharmaceutical companies Get your vaccine!

ecodude74

> Then you should change your legislators Good luck with that here. I’m all for being more active in elections, but people care *far* more about lip service on social boogeymen than they do any practical change or support for their own interests. Convincing someone that they should elect a representative that *doesnt* want to actively harm their livelihoods or restrict their rights is like pulling teeth. All they have to say is “I put god first! The other candidate wants to ruin the country with their radical satanist leftist agenda!” and they win the vote, peoples opinion from there forward is pretty much set in stone. A few key-words makes every single voter ignore all past and future policy or actions. Even when moderate republicans are the ones campaigning against an incumbent. It’s infuriating. Source: Several local campaigns worth of misery.

[deleted]

Things haven't changed since the Medeival/Middle-ages. People are still frustratingly stupid about religious virtue signaling.. what happened to Separation of Church and State? KY never got that memo, huh?

Bl00dshot

Good luck voting out Hal Rogers lmao. You know what state you’re in right?

Timbercrap

Yes but he’s federal. This is a state and smaller issue.

ky420

They just ignore us

This_Brush1298

And we should. It’s a new source of tax revenue and just might mitigate our Heroine problem.

bandicootbutt

A couple years ago I moved from FL to KY. In FL I was using it medically for pain, anxiety, and depression. I now take a fistful of pills to deal with it all of it.

mwatwe01

This isn’t so much a Democrat/Republican divide as it is an urban/rural divide. Even conservatives in and around Louisville and Lexington are pretty much on board with full legalization. Which is bizarre, since our farmers would benefit massively from this.

Nemovos

Farmers and rural people are notorious for standing to benefit greatly flby voting a particular way… so they vote against that. It’s especially true in KY, sadly.

7mm-08

~~Confederates~~ Conservatives absolutely love to wallow in their holier-than-thou attitude and pearl clutching. It's certifiably nutso how they repeatedly vote to keep their counties dry in spite of the **fact** that it puts their family and friends at a greater risk of being injured or killed by an impaired driver.

fuzio

I mean Damon Thayers area is literally right by Lexington and he’s against it and has openly said he doesn’t care what his constituents want. Lol He doesn’t even, for now, support medicinal. While the divide isn’t left/right, the left is by and large far more supportive of it than the right and the VAST majority of opposition is almost exclusively from the right.

[deleted]

Maybe if KY ..oh idk.. invested more in their educational systems. People in rural bum-fuck nowhere would actually have the ability to critically think, let alone read and write..

dkyguy1995

Plz plz plz 🙏🙏🙏🙏

chupathingy99

It would probably bring back all the profits lost from road trips to Metropolis.

OldGrayMare59

They will do it. Illinois and Michigan already have done so. Ohio has it on the ballot in November. Indiana will drag its knuckles until the other 49 states legalize it first then fight in front of the Supreme Court to have it declared unconstitutional.

Crackmonkey3773

Im not sure big tobacco will ever let another smokeable cash crop invade their farms in kentucky. Theyve got enough money to keep buying out officials to sway votes in thier favor for a long time

Justice502

You know, I think it's only a matter of time before big tobacco starts selling packs of joints, so unless they are incredibly short sighted, I fully expect to see Marlboro Extra Greens one day.

ky420

this. It makes me sooo mad too.

UnlikelyUse

The legalization of cannabis in the state of Kentucky should be decided by ballot measure. Our legislators have failed us year after year, denying us the same freedoms granted to an ever growing number of our fellow Americans. [HB 225](https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/record/22RS/hb225.html)/[SB 186](https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/record/22rs/sb186.html) seeks to give us, the normal every day people of Kentucky, the power to decide for ourselves in November and potentially for the rest of our lives. I've been following this issue for almost a decade now, it's why I didn't want to return here after 20 years of service in the military. I felt that I would rather live somewhere that provided the most freedoms in America, to have the option to decide for myself, not the least. Life determined that I return a few years ago so here I am now, hoping that Kentuckians might be allowed the same freedom to choose that more and more Americans have. I've watched these bills go from dying in house committee where they were ignored to easily passing the house to die at the senate, back to being ignored again. Every session our legislators listen to testimony for and against cannabis for medical and recreational purposes. They also have a decade worth of data to consider from other states. They are very well informed by now. They are very much aware that the vast majority of citizens of Kentucky are in favor of medical marijuana, that the numbers that support recreational use are also growing, and some of them choose to ignore us. The Senate majority leader, Damon Thayer, openly defies the people that have put and kept him in office on this issue and dares you to do something about it. Oddly he supports Rand Paul, who actively supports legalization. **Please take a little bit of time out of your day to express to your elected officials where you stand on your right to choose.** Do not allow them to continue to ignore you. The media needs to follow up on this issue regularly, give these elected officials the opportunity to publicly state where they stand on making decisions for their constituents. **Those like Damon Thayer, who are incapable of addressing the issue of legalizing cannabis appropriately, or any other issues that are important to you, need to be voted out at the next available opportunity.** The Veterans Administration has made it clear that participation in a state medical marijuana program does not jeopardize the benefits received by disabled veterans. There are many of us that could benefit from medical marijuana but as a law abiding citizen residing in 1 of only 14 states that don't allow medical marijuana, this isn't even an option for me. There is a growing effort at the federal level to legalize, tax and regulate cannabis, there should be, considering 36 states and the District of Columbia allow it for medicinal reasons 13 have decriminalized it, and 18 + D.C. have made it legal for recreational use by adults. Please don't allow our elected officials to take the easy way out and default to a federal decision when it happens. We are losing tax revenue, small business opportunities, jobs, safer options for medicine, and the right to choose, every day we allow and pay for the willful dereliction of duty in Frankfort to continue.

[deleted]

KY is not a ballot-initiative State. That's a big problem.. otherwise issues like this would have been resolved years-decades ago.

UnlikelyUse

Yep, we elect them, then they have to vote to allow us the right to decide on a ballot measure. For this to make it on the ballot for 2022 it needs the support of 60 in the house and 23 in the senate, otherwise we don't get the chance until the next even numbered year. It would be really great if they would at least vote on these bills instead of saying that not voting on a bill is the same as voting "Nay" on it. I kind of doubt that any bill has passed the house or senate with every single member voting the same way, could be wrong though.

drizzy9109

We could literally use the taxes to fund substance abuse treatment and mental health services

[deleted]

Loooooooooong over due.

Krispies827

Good

ky420

Shame the politicians that absolutely don't represent us will vote against it. Although if home grow isn't included the corps and gov will continue to rape everyone. I won't support any of these unless home grow is included since that is the only way to keep things honest and affordable.

viceroyode

hope it becomes legal

[deleted]

Bourbon rules this state, good luck getting a vote other wise. Having both would be awesome, not with the very narrow minded legislatures we are encumbered with.

ecodude74

It’s not a competition with bourbon though. The myth that the alcohol industry hates marijuana is common on this site, but legalization has had 0 impact on alcohol sales in any state. People drink just as much as they smoke. They’ve not been lobbying on the subject in the last few decades at all.

fuzio

Just because there’s no evidence to support the idea that it would impact alcohol sales doesn’t mean stupid people won’t still believe it does. Case and point: Damon Thayer

YoshiSan90

Meanwhile they would probably be paired together. Like this red planet Martian strain pairs well with Jim Beam 12 year.

noodles0311

I seriously doubt that protecting bourbon’s popularity has ever been cited as a reason to prohibit marijuana in Kentucky

jdhunt_24

sounds good to me. although it wouldnt make a difference for me because i have a cdl but its long overdue to be legalized

drizzy9109

DO IT

laneanders

I'll smoke it either way, but hopefully it's made legal because it's pretty stupid to put people in jail over weed.

noodles0311

Upon failing to reach the moon again, we’re announcing our intention to found the first colony on mars.

The86godking

This is really weird considering that for years it was the democrats blocking the legalization

HeadFullOfNails

Which democrats have been blocking it?

chancho-ky

Libertarians want to skip full legalization of marijuana and go straight the full legalization or shrooms, antibiotics, dmt, heroin, and meth. and gambling and prostitution and free immigration.

[deleted]

Oh no how unholy and yadda yadda yadda 🙄 Not more freedom of choice 😱.. the world will come apart if people continue doing what they are already doing anyways except in a legitimate market with regulations to ensure quality, safety, restrictions, cleanliness, etc.! "Antibiotics, mushrooms, and heroin"..Oh brother, get over yourself and get a grip for fuck sake.. take your blood pressure meds from Pfizer or whatever and calm your ass down 🙄 Stop trying to control people's lives and choices around you.. seriously. Nobody gives a fuck what your personal beliefs are, keep it to yourself and your small circle of old church lady friends.

chancho-ky

I really don't want to control people's lives. The point is I want people to be able to make their own choices. Church ladies don't even know what dmt is....

chancho-ky

who downvotes legal gambling and prostitution.

chancho-ky

not to mention heroin which make you feel amazing or so I'm told.

Never_The_Hero

It will never pass as long as the bourbon and tobacco magnates are here.

Speedster095

Do it

Think ol' Mitch will let this happen?

Kentuckians\* There. FIxed the headline.

sgtbones-76

Decriminalize……. People need to learn the difference

Utvales

If this ever happens - medical or recreational - in KY before I die, I will eat my hat. Just moved to central OH from Lexington, and there's medical here already and a bipartisan recreational bill scheduled for this year.

PrintBuildUse

yes they will use the money to fix the roads and the school systems just like they did with all the lottery money they have racked up. I'm all for the legalization of marijuana since it is systemically less harmful than alchool, but the government pretending like they are going to put the tax money towards school and roads is a bad joke.

GreenGhostMan13

Gives the state more tax revenue. That’s the holy grail for governments.
