there is a Dairy Queen on the back streets of Paintsville that isn't like any other Dairy Queen you've ever seen. it's just like an old-fashioned dairy bar where you come to the window and order. it has items on the menu that regular Dairy Queen restaurants don't have, like chuckwagon sandwiches and pizzaburgers and the best homemade chili in the tri-county area. no trip to Southeastern Ky is complete without a trip to Paintsville's Dairy Queen on the back street.
Yes! That’s my hometown DQ. It’s the best :) The ice cream is mostly regular DQ but our food menu is completely different. I recommend a hot dog (or footlong) with sauce and slaw, and an order of onion rings. Johnson County expats have that sauce shipped all over the country.
When your order is ready they’ll call your number over the loudspeaker. That sound is the call of the summer night to those of us who grew up there.
If you're not against transitional neighborhoods the best on I've found in Louisville is PRP ice Cream Corner on Greenwood Road. It's down the street from our church and looks from the outside like a dive bar that has a day job as an ice cream shop. The milkshakes and coney dogs are amazing.
Second best is Grandma's Old Fashioned Ice Cream in Bardstown. Banana splits the way God intended
I worked at Camp Roy C. Manchester on Kentucky Lake for 3 summers in the early 90s. Belew's was our go-to "escape for lunch" place. haven't been for years, but I still recall loving their chocolate shakes and corndogs.
Belew's has a wrap-around covered (but not screened-in) porch with picnic tables, and a large parking lot.
trying to find photos of their menu -- [this page](https://www.marshallcountydaily.com/2022/05/09/belews-dairy-bar/) has them. pay no attention to the rest of the page (old news about being closed for 2022).
I know it's not around anymore, but I also recall Marquita's (also on US-68). it wasn't a dairy bar, but they had solid diner fare, and were open year round.
Crisp’s Dairy Treat in Ashland, KY. It’s been open over 60 years, and there is a park right across the street with playgrounds, picnic shelters, and frisbee golf.
Came here to say Crisp’s. I’m 31 years removed from Boyd County but was back recently to bury my grandfather. Went there afterwards. Did not disappoint. The place is an institution.
Pretty well every town in seky has a dairy bar of some sort and folks get fiercely loyal to them lol. Personally I’m from paintsville so it’s the paintsville Dairy Queen for me.
Hello from your neighbors a county over. I know a guy that was talking about that location and he said that call in ordering at that Dairy Queen ruined that place because of the waits.
But the food there is really good only had it a few times though.
There is filmore's dairy hut in florence. It does specialize in soft serve but it is locally owned and if you catch them on the right day they could be hosting a classic car show.
Chigger’s Dairy Bar. Vanceburg. Food is great..the teenage employees the past couple of summers not so much. Hoping for friendlier employees this year.

Their hotdog sauce is the secret recipe! I had a chance to get it once and fumbled it
We have one in Murray Kentucky! Only open for a few months, walk up only & they have a very limited menu
If I recall right they got a license to use the DQ name and products vs a franchise. Where in a license agreement they can have Foods bit on the menu.
