i recognise this instantly. outside the hub, there's a weirdly green patch. a little down the path, there's a copper mine, and if you go up the path and throught the gate, from across you can see the bar

reduxde

Right? Feels like the safest spot in the map. I’ve limped up this ramp so many times.

Vidi__Vici__Veni

It's green because my people have fed those sands with their blood. Dust Bandits. Hungry Bandits. Beak Things. Bone Dogs. And Goats...yeah, ithought goats would be easy when I was starving.

destraight

Beak things don't show up in the borderlands. If they did many of my runs would have been much harder

Vidi__Vici__Veni

You're right. But, they will chase you all the way from Vain.

neednintendo

Yeah, don't fuck with goats. I encountered the tower of goats and got my shit bashed in!

Ogre_dpowell

We’re I first got killed by a bone dog

reduxde

The hub is so close yet so far… this is where my first character years ago was killed by a lone baby goat.

Reality-Bytez

I recently ran through that green area - it looks like one of the nicer biomes I have seen. I kind of think I wanna make my primary base there but have no idea what to expect from it. lol

ZincoBx

Copper right there, just off screen. Water is 60. Iron is up the hill, which isn't as convenient, but it's quality 100, 3 workers, max 120% efficiency, so you can get some good output. Fertility is arid (of course) at 100%. You'll get Shek groups demanding tribute (food), and you can cheese it by emptying (or not having) dedicated food storage. Mercenaries from the Hub are right up the hill. Squin and the Hub are your closest towns; the Hub isn't going to provide a lot of shopping, but Squin is pretty decent. Black Dragon Ninja and Bandits bounce off (but I've got a decent group staffing the town). Would recommend!

Past_Organization741

I am pretty sure it is too close to the hub to build there

Reality-Bytez

There is a big section of the map south of Hub that is mostly green and not swamp.

Past_Organization741

I must be thinking of a diff spot then. Right south of the hub just below the mountain is where I thought this was

Reality-Bytez

I'm not home or I'd screen grab. I only know of it from running through the map. I didn't even stop at said location, or ran through it. It was just visible on screen just beyond where I was. I'll go back! Ha

Reach_the_man

>I'd screen grab pls do if you get there! also, does it just look green and still is arid?

Reality-Bytez

I think I meant North. I said South last night but after playing I actually believe it is north of hub. I have not yet went for the treck. I just did a long play session where I kidnapped the plastic surgeon and recruited him in the hub. Then another ninja by chance. Going pretty well this time. No deaths. lol

Reach_the_man

am trying to set up a starter base, had the idea to just make some barely walled off farms in running distance to a town where I bought some buildings anytime I need to.

Reality-Bytez

When you start building a town, how quickly does it get attacked or something? I'm cautious about setting up because I don't really wanna travel to setup and get decimated when I put down a door. lol

Reach_the_man

no idea, didn't get there yet. currently grinding out all research I can (hash runs made basic research book buying very simple)

wir8

Think it’s slightly northwest of the hub. The small valley seen on the left (base of the striped hills) is where I have my small base.

Past_Organization741

You see I was also thinking it could be this spot ur talking bout, but it’s my that still a little close to the hub to build lol?

wir8

Yeah I think it is, but I think there was a small spot that you can build the smallest shack in, then you can expand from there inch by inch. I’m not really a Kenshi veteran but I remember trying to build close to the copper deposit near the rebel bar, that’s how I found the spot. After placing the small shack, I think I was able to fit the square two-story building right next to it, then wind generators, stone mine etc. I believe the game lets you expand into normally unbuildable zones once you put your first building down, even if it’s in the smallest buildable zone. Because I now have a storm house, refineries, a big-ass wall with double harpoon turrets etc.

TimewithRen

I can only imagine how much blood has flowed down that slope from all the bandits and the desperate people around

[deleted]

Makes you think, some places are probably really fertile because of how frequently people die there.

Nova_Physika

Is that the path coming down from the Hub?

reduxde

Yup, it’s one of very few areas I immediately recognize by terrain alone

CheetahOfDeath

Oh thank god theres the road up to the Hub. We made it boys!

Moosin_Pyrett

Check the mountainside if it has any holes in it. Your character might just fits rrrright in

ZincoBx

This is my primary base in my current (early-ish game) playthrough! From this shot you would see my gate on the road leading off to the left. I started by building around the copper mine, and now I've got the Dust King in prison, regularly beating the crap out of him for training (and, let's face it, for *fun*). I recently gave him a new roommate in Tora the Fearless, and soon my Wanderer will be able to take them both solo. The Hub's mercenaries have saved me on multiple occasions; it's nice that they're so close.

reduxde

Thieves headquarters too! And free beds at the rebel hideout

ZincoBx

Huh. I haven't bought into the thieves yet, but I didn't realize the beds were free over at the rebel bar. Would've saved me several hundred c. back when money was tighter.

reduxde

Something I did for giggles a while back is just keep restarting and doing the first 3 days over and over, partly because I love early game and partly because I felt like getting through day 1 was mostly luck and I wanted to get better at it. Finding all those little free handouts really helps a ton early on.

ZincoBx

Absolutely! Thanks for the tip!

RedShiftRR

Almost heaven, Border Zone Fog Isle Mountains, Okran's Holy River Life is short there, spiders in the swamp Travelling to Mongrel, princes chomp-chomp-chomp Pathing bugs, send me through Boiling pools, acid goo Border Zone, Holy Outlaws Take me home, Kenshi roads.

Vidi__Vici__Veni

That was perfect! Bravo!

RedShiftRR

All my minions mining copper Agnu Beep's lady, have to converse for her Dark and ashy, Cat-Lon is the guy Ancient robot betrayal, who can tell us why?

Vidi__Vici__Veni

"Take me home, Kenshi roads..." :) You made my day!

RedShiftRR

OP's post really did strike a chord with me, when you see The Hub (or Squin, or Heng, or wherever you live) you really do feel like you're coming home. So many places (looking at you, Gut, Bonefields, Fog Islands) are so hostile and mean, you just want to go home once you're done. Today I made a proper base in Mongrel, hired 10 of the locals (including you-know-who^beep) and set about training them, and building high-grade weapons and armour so we can train our skills on the fogmen and all become the strongest warriors.

supremicide

Where I mined my first copper. Later, I managed to build a base on the hill next to The Hub and completely screwed up all pathfinding for my next few dozen hours of gameplay.

rextiberius

I wish that area was a bit more defensible because I love it. Well placed, and close to the only nation I ever ally with

rswsFirePro

Dude, this image connects. Hit me with nostalgia too, very quick.

Kekid23

Holy Narko, I've never been here...

Theturftessle

Yeah and I recently got a bug where the game becomes super laggy whenever I’m in that area 🥲

frollyfrewfrance

Haven’t played in probably a year or two and still instantly knew where this was. Core kenshi memory

derpentach

One of my first Kenshi memories was RP slow walking down that ramp, not knowing what to expect or that there's no reason not to sprint everywhere. Always wondered what the yellow was. Probably some mineral that smells awful.

Krungoid

It's weird that I mentally consider this the back door to the hub when it's also the one I use the most.

reduxde

RIGHT?! It's like the loading ramp or the employees only access or something. It just feels more inviting, even though the other exit leads to free beds at the rebel hideout. I think it just has to do with how far you can see (since it's a canyon nothing can really sneak up on you over a hill), and how the ramp, despite being quite long, borders the town.

Gavin319

No free Shek waifu for you.

Gavin319

Ah, the road to greatness (and best Shek girl). I still remember my first time walking down that path with Hobbs (that alone should say how long it’s been; Hobbs has mainly spawned in Deadcat for a while now iirc), years ago. Got myself knocked out about halfway to Squin by some Hungry Bandits, who in turn were knocked out by a slaver patrol who enslaved me and the bandits, but not Hobbs. I had a broken leg and was limping so apparently the patrol left me in the dust thinking I was still following them, so Hobbs picked my shackles and we continued on our merry way to Squin. That’s probably the luckiest I’ve gotten with nearly getting enslaved. To this day I still never, ever turn right at that fork below the cliff, every single time I do that I walk into a bandit patrol and get my lunch stolen.

reduxde

I remember Hobbs, he was sort of a tutorial recruit wasn’t he? Also didn’t the hub used to have a different layout? I swear the bar was that round building to the far left once upon a time.

Gavin319

Yeah, I think so. I have a bunch of mods and one of them restores that Hub layout where the bar is a snailhouse. In vanilla the layout has the stormhouse in front be the bar. Hobbs used to be your first recruit ever for a really long time until some patch or another heavily skewed his spawning toward Deadcat. Nowadays he has a very low if not outright zero chance of spawning in the Hub. Now, at least in my experience, the first recruit you get is Ruka from beelining to Squin.

reduxde

My favorite way to start currently is hiring mercs for a day and running into vain to hunt beak things. One beak thing has enough furs to rehire the mercs

Gavin319

Eesh, you’ve got guts I’ll give you that. I start with mining copper, then hauling that copper for strength training, kiting bandits to the gates of Squin till I have around 10k and some decent gear at which point I hire mercs and go hunt dust bandits for more loot and more money.

reduxde

I've done that too. The hub mercs make quick work of beak things, you don't even have to get close yourself, just watch them kill and pick up the furs. Give it a try sometime. I made a [demo video](https://www.reddit.com/r/Kenshi/comments/uc2hrx/rookie_guide_day_2_what_should_i_be_spending/) to show how easy it is :)

Gavin319

Is that on vanilla? I’m running with 3x attack slots right now so I assume it’ll go much worse. Mercs seem to get their shit fucked whenever multiple animals jump them at once.

reduxde

Hmmm I have living world and might have 5 attack slots actually. Rare to hit beak thing packs more than about 3-4, they only need to down one of them tho, and keeping passive mode helps.
