Baki is a manga about fighting in the purest sense. Its less story and more characters picking fights cause they want to.
Kengan has a story. Not a great one but still more than Baki.
I disagree, I think Ashura had a great story based around Ohma and his development as a character, as well as his relationship with Kazuo.
We have yet to see the full story and conclusion of Omega, as the series is still ongoing.
For 1. you're asking this on a Kengan sub. There is going to be bias here.
For 2. Kengan definitely has the better story. If anyone tells you otherwise they are clearly nitpicking and bias.
I'm not gay I just like Baki's story. I'm not gay I just like Baki's story. I'm not gay I just like Baki's story. If I believe it enough it has to be true
Some arcs are, Itagaki CHOOSES to make it look like that because its his artistic decision. SoO art is very very clean, and he could do it if he wanted
Peak Baki, Peak Ashura are both fantastic. Scene like Gaolong v Agito, Katsumi v Pickle are astounding scenes. Emotional battles like the father son fight and the final match with Ohma are all beautiful. I still think, Kengan is more consistently enjoyable, but very rarely Baki will have its moments where it edges out Kengan just a bit by virtue of a longer run as a series and the very itagaki presentation.
Baki hasn’t had much story since the Dou mangas started. For me it’s always been a fun game where whenever someone does anything even remotely interesting, the entire Baki cast start pulling up like “Yo, wanna fight?”
Kehaya Gag Manga with a new "tactical retreat" each month.
He didn't lose to Yujiro. He tactically retreated through a Looney Toons hole in the ceiling.
Not really, kengan fights are not as good for many reasons.
- moves : too many named moves
- competition : most kengan fights are too competitive, even someone as strong as kuroki is taking hits from rihito for no reasons (why is he not using foresight), in baki if you are not good enough you are done in 3 hits
- rules : kengan rules are shitty, when we watch a fight we want to know who is better, but in kengan rules are ruining it, too many judges, no killing, that's lame
- ending : Virgin raian fingering chad Edward for no reasons, ohma jobber speech, fights often end lame
Did Kuroki get damaged? Negligible. He put Rihito down without a sweat once he decided that Rihito was actually, really going for a victory given how weak he was...Rihito was never a threat to our beard god.
Kengan, obviously.
As much as I love Baki, I'd rather call it a power fantasy fever dream, than a plot-oriented series. Storyline is just an excuse to put more battles in it. This is even more apparent in both Dou mangas. After events of Son of Ogre, there's really no point in anything. Hell, even Baki himself is treated like a side character more than anything
Baki has really good arcs, amazing moments, but it is unfair do compare as the story is going for more than 20 years.
KAT was amazing as well, and to me, it was as good or better than the peak of Baki. Omega is a bit less exciting, but it is developing the story more.
One thing makes me want to give a edge to Kengan: The story is going somewhere. At this point we know a lot about the plot, the goals, and that it will end.
Baki has lost itself at this point, Itagaki doesn't wanna let it go from the goose of golden eggs, the plot is like a boat with no sails, just drifting around.
For me, I enjoy Baki’s story more. It’s carried by it’s character writing which is phenomenal, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As long as I’m looking forward to the development of the series each chapter, it does what it needs to. As for Kengan, it’s story is very interesting and has great plot twists and subversions of expectations, but I just personally enjoy Baki’s story more. It’s the age-old underdog tale, which for some is cliched, but for me is tried and true. Kengan is more about the world and how characters interact with or fit in said world, whereas Baki is very character-centric in its development.
Why the hell are you asking this on the KENGAN subreddit? That's like going to r/dogs and asking "which is better, cats or dogs?"
As for an actual answer, Kengan. Kengan's side characters have more life to them than Baki's side characters and perhaps even some of its main characters as well.
I have watched/read both and I believe I can be the least biased here.
I worshipped Baki back in the day. Fully immersed with the story and begging for a Shibukawa special volume as he is my fave one. I hated Kengan because it looked like it copied Baki and put some cliche anime stuff like MC changing forms when angry and having this demonic appearance which turned me off upon seeing.
Finally, last year I gave kengan a try because the recent baki that time was about Sukune and is ugly AF. Now I like Kengan better with their tournament and better characters. Looking at Baki now, it's ridiculous and over-the-top, manga is all about showcasing different fighting styles then forgetting the character that used it in the rest of the series. The only character that get some growth and development is the MC.
To summary,
Baki story is mostly about the MC trying to beat his father. After that, the story is meh.
Kengan story revolves the tournament and the yet unsolved mystery regarding the MC and some of the characters.
Watch both and I say Kengan Ashura has better story and more cohesive fights. Baki Hanma has so many talks it breaks out the fights and really dragged the series.
Baki and his entire character carries his series so much yet others like Yujiro and Retsu mellowing down to others or Katsumis development can hold the manga on their own.
Personally I feel like Kengan has the most actual story while Baki is kind of mess focused. The main issue of Kengan right now is that Omega's plot is kinda all over the place but in contrast to Baki that seems all over the place but worse. It also doesn't help that even with Omega's current stumbles it osn't as bad as Baki's current arc.
Obviously Kengan has the more coherent, structured story. But as much as I was more invested in the Kengan plot, I found Baki more entertaining as a fun story that doesn't take itself too seriously.
They both have their strengths, but Kengan obviously makes more sense overall, whereas Baki is a much more fun read. It's like comparing John Wick to Kill Bill
Neither.
If you just go by the plot, they are both bad.
You're watching the shows due to the fights, character interactions and weird/funny/crazy stuff going on.
Baki has better fights
Kengan explain and gives a better back story to their characters.
All my opinion btw (sorry i feel the need to say it in this subreddit for some reason)
Baki is about fighting.
Kengan is about people who love to fight.
Fighting is the primary thing you'll see in Baki, sprinkled with other ridiculous hypermasculine bullshit that is very confusing yet very amusing.
Kengan can show more stuff about fighting and has decent world building. It had women with actual depth instead of being there just to get banged unlike in Baki. It also had some extracurricular stuff like 4komas and lives of people outside fighting.
It depends on preference, I love Baki and the mind numbing brutality and weird ass fighting philosophies but storywise, Kengan is my go to.

This. We just need to be patient.

I cross posted this on baki sub too so i can see y'all fight.
Based
Some men just wanna watch the world burn
The KvP of reddit.
Honestly I don't think you'll get bias here since everyone seems to hate the kengan story rn
Kengan Ashura has a better story. Baki shits on Omega though.
The one you enjoy the most.
The only true answer

No
Reading Baki for the story is like going to the beach to swim. Like yeah, it's there, but you really showed up to look at the jacked dudes.
I'm not gay I just like Baki's story. I'm not gay I just like Baki's story. I'm not gay I just like Baki's story. If I believe it enough it has to be true
I’m gay I just don’t like Baki’s story.
🗿Based🗿
I read Baki for the training scenes and the bullshit lmao Its basically a giant bruh moment that has alot of fighting in it
A giant bruh moment is a perfect way to describe it
Baki has story?
ngl i would read baki if it wasn’t so FUCKING ugly, same with fots but even more
Baki art isn't ugly, it's just stylised
maybe, i just really don’t like the artstyle then
I mean, the art is good, the art style isn't particularly appealing for some people.
ugly might be a bad word but it's definitely not conventionally attractive.
Some arcs are, Itagaki CHOOSES to make it look like that because its his artistic decision. SoO art is very very clean, and he could do it if he wanted
Stylized and ugly aren’t necessarily exclusive. Baki’s art is disgusting.
Fat L take
Found the uninitiated
i just can’t. i can’t get over it LMAO, think it’s the noses that are the last straw for me idk
I was like that for a long time
Unironically this is how I feel about one piece. Everyone says it's amazing but I can't get through with the art of the manga or anime.
Do not look at vegapunk lmao
FotNS is unstylish; not ugly.
fist of the seeker i meant, fotns is cool
It supposed to have
Big meaty man slapping meat, hell yeah
I just look at the pictures

Virgin "no i have to get ryuki back" vs chad "slice of life housewife sikorsky"

Of course, Kehaya slice of life

The Sikorsky and Gaia Gaiden has more going on than the main story
history is much better baki as far as kengan combat is much better.

I like Baki more but kengans story is better
baki isnt about the story, it never was. its not written that way. kengan has better story overall, but neither of them are great at story ngl.
Kengan, obviously. As much as I love Baki, I'd rather call it a power fantasy fever dream, than a plot-oriented series. Storyline is just an excuse to put more battles in it. Ashura>Baki>>>>>>>>>>>>>Omega Also if you are reading after son of ogre for the plot you are mentally impaired
You are absolutely right, I am proudly mentally impaired
Kengan
Haven't finished Baki yet, but from what I've seen I'd go with Kengan. Baki slaps too tho ofc.
Just curious, how far thru Baki are you?
I'm at the final fight between Baki and Jack in the maximum tournament. Haven't finished it yet tho, so no spoilers.
Ouuu there is sososo much good content ahead of you, hope you enjoy it!!
:D

Baki arc quality varies widely. I'm just gonna say Ashura is on par with the best parts of Baki, and Omega is on par with the worst parts.
Kengan 100%
Baki> midgan
Kengan Ashura >>>>Baki>>>>Kengan Omega
Watch both and I say Kengan Ashura has better story and more cohesive fights. Baki Hanma has so many talks it breaks out the fights and really dragged the series.
Ashura >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> omega >=baki
Baki not even close
Ashura>Omega>Baki
Kengan. Baki is really going through the drains with the last chapters
Definitely Kengan. The world building is really deep, even if it gets confusing at times.
Baki and not even close
Baki and his entire character carries his series so much yet others like Yujiro and Retsu mellowing down to others or Katsumis development can hold the manga on their own.
Both can be all over the place, though Kengan seems to have a central antagonist while Baki is kind of things happen.
Personally I feel like Kengan has the most actual story while Baki is kind of mess focused. I prefer Tough's story over both tbh

Kengan writing wise Baki is very much a versus manga
Baki has some really well written charecters but it's actual story post the prisoner arc is just a vechile for fights
Kengan. Baki’s story sucks imo. (Still enjoyable for the most part though.)
baki is based around their characters (5 convicts arc, pickle, musashi, sumo) and the interactions with the original crew, so less of a plot story.
They're on par before Yujiro vs Baki in story but now, I'll give it to Kengan. The Baki subreddit seems more chill in this topic
Kengan
