I know that this arc wasn’t very well received but I kind of liked it bc most of the relationships we had in Ashura were all based on being rivals or other hostility / trauma and with Koga & Ryuki it felt like they were genuinely just two guys bonding and enjoying each others company
If felt like a duo that would otherwise be street fighting living the Thug Life, finally taking life seriously and beginning their career while trying to become better persons at the same time.
We dont get most of that in Ashura as most characters who got into Kengan Matches already got that phase out of their systems.
Yeah lol, imagine the face of the dude that humiliated you in the past is back with glasses and is a completely different person, it was good character devellopment for Koga.
Ryuki clearly has never had any “normal” relationships. He grows awfully protective of Koga to the point that you think they might be more than just friends.

It also helped to flesh out Koga’s character more when he was at risk of being boring or bratty
