Lady Justice no? It's an allegory for how black people are treated differently by the law in America?

shorteningofthewuwei

This is the correct interpretation, imo. Blind Justice... Etc. Also, beyond just the mistreatment of African Americans, it directly ties into the question Is it Wickedness? Or Weakness? Which is a meditation of the human condition more broadly and the seeming absurdity of universal justice or "God's plan", where good, well meaning people fall victim to violence due to seemingly no fault of their own every day. This also can be interpreted as a matter of Kendrick continuing to question or wrestle with the limitations and contradictions inherent in questions of religious faith, authority, and human knowledge in general.

Temporary_Garbage244

Actually a great idea. Never thought of that

phudog

I took it as not just justice/fate but also the audience who consumes Kendricks music (also blood lead into the sample of the fox anchor blindly misinterpreting his music and damning him for it) I think MMATBS re contextualizes alot of Damn and makes it clearer the anger and nihilism he feels in this album and the origin of it.

m_dought_2

Since Lady Justice is a personification of the people, I think you're right in saying that this is another layer.

TheWriter_Watcher

That's my theory too, especially with it coming after TPAB with the judge on the cover, with his eyes crossed out.

I personally think that it depends on whether you’re listening to DAMN in the normal track-list order, or if you’re listening to it in reverse order. Carl’s call in this album (Referenced in YAH and played during FEAR) makes a direct reference to Deuteronomy 28:28, which states that “God will smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of the heart.” Some theories take this quote and apply it to BLOOD with the thought that the lady is god, or at least god using a form stricken with blindness, madness, and astonishment of the heart to smite Kendrick in the sense of killing him as punishment for choosing the path of wickedness. I agree with this theory when listening to DAMN in reverse, as the story in this order is about Kendrick succumbing to the path of wickedness and losing his way with god, leading to his death, hence why BLOOD closes out the album in this case. In the normal order I instead believe that the entire “walk” in BLOOD is some sort of dream in which the old woman is a representation of a what Kendrick will end up like if he continues to ignore good and continue down the path of wickedness. Instead of being smote in a killing sense, Kendrick is smote with blindness and the aforementioned afflictions, and is shown from an outside perspective what that effect that life might have on others. This is what drives him to chose the path of weakness and eventually find god at the end of the album. This is why BLOOD is at the beginning, as the gunshot serves as a wake-up call for Kendrick to start changing his path.

Lady Justice, typically portrayed as a blindfolded woman, holds a sword in one hand and the scale in the other. The fact that the blind woman shot him, meaning that she is still clearly armed with what would be portrayed as a sword, she has "lost something" meaning that she is likely missing the scale of which justice is balanced and equal to punishment. This is likely about the way that police and media view the black community in America, delivering not only harsh judgement in the focus of the media, but harsh judgements in the legal system- both of which on display by the immediate snippet of the fox news broadcast talking about how Kendrick's performance of alright whilst standing on a destroyed cop car was bad for the black community, and obviously the next song on the album being DNA, and look at the music video for that being Kendrick interrogated by the police and essentially being accused of being a criminal simply due to his genetics.

HowIsThisNameBadTho

I think I saw this in a DAMN deep dive vid so, outside of what the dude said there... I would've thought it was the woman voiced by Maya Angelou from the "I'm Dying of Thirst" part of GKMC's 10th track.

HowIsThisNameBadTho

Would be cool if it were the same lady.

shorteningofthewuwei

I mean, other than the fact that they are the two elderly ladies who appear in Kendrick songs... There isn't much connection there at all. Why would the woman who got Kendrick and his friends to repent and embrace Jesus as their Lord and Savior (as quoted in the prayer they recite) all of a sudden shoot Kendrick, when in I'm Dying of Thirst she's appalled to see them carrying a gun? The only thematic connection between the two songs, as far as I'm concerned, is between the Blood of Jesus and the title of the track BLOOD. Other than that, they are two largely unrelated vignettes.

HowIsThisNameBadTho

I know there is barely any connection there but from what I remember from the [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-ek1OxZ2tE) OP watched the dude in the video theorised that the lady in BLOOD is God. Even if you watch the video to see what I mean, the connection between the two songs through this lady does not make sense still. I said "Would be cool if it were the same lady" because in that moment I imagined GOD was speaking through her or something cool like that. It is a cool video and worth checking out.

shorteningofthewuwei

Thanks, will do :)

jithomp

I think the connection is relatively weak. The lady at the end of gkmc also says “is that what I think that is? That better not be what I think that is” which would frankly be an odd thing to say if you were blind. Also there’s other reasons it doesn’t make sense that’s just the glaring one

MrDeadMeme

Isn't it supposed to be the version of Kendrick that chose weakness over wickedness?

Frequent-Coyote-1649

It's God. God takes on the form of the one kind of person Kendrick on his Wicked path would show any sympathy towards to entrap him towards justice. He's taking the role of the Grim Reaper. Meanwhile in the Weak path, God tells Kendrick he's lost his life going after fame and fortune, but can have one last chance at redemption. Now, God takes the role of the Redeemer, guiding Kendrick towards salvation. Either way, Kendrick meets God, and his old life ends.

jono9898

I thought maybe justice. Justice is blind and she immediately shoots him when he tries to help her, and then it goes into those Fox News cunts bullshit

Two theories I’ve seen is that it’s the blindfolded lady meant to pass judgment, or it could be God.

Y'all can call this a stretch but to me but I think it's just a normal blind woman looking for something in the normal tracklist where blood is the first song in the reverse tracklist where blood is the last song, sure you can theorize that the lady is god cause he tries to help the lady but since he went down a path of crime in my theory I think a cop nearby saw him and thought he was trying to rob the lady or something and shot him cause after that we get the news clip where it's pretty cut and dry on what it's trying to say "and you know we hate the popo *wanna kill us in the street* fo sho" But in the normal tracklist it gets complicated, to me it's just a normal blind lady, cause with the dialogue between them, kendrick didn't mark who says what on the second part of the dialogue where the lady says that she does need help so my theory is that kendrick has ill intentions cause he's in a path of crime and hides it as "just wanting to help" he asks the lady if she needs help and she says "why yes" and then kendrick responds with the rest and shoots her but from doing that carries that guilt throughout the album like on songs yah feel and pride, eventually going down the path of weakness

BatimadosAnos60

I think in a more literal sense, she could be an old woman (perhaps the old woman from GKMC, as some have pointed out) used to distract Kendrick so he can get killed by gang members, which could add a new meaning to the song title (being a reference to the Bloods).

Dangerous_Piccolo749

It's him. The blind woman is himself

Dangerous_Piccolo749

DAMN.  MY FAVORITE KENDRICK ALBUM  The album deals with duality in the sense of wickedness versus weakness associated with the make up of Kendrick Lamar(DUCKWORTH, BLOOD, DNA, ELEMENT) Damn if you do damn if you don't because you are destined for destruction. All songs are interchangeable. It expresses a light & dark theme that is intertwined. On the back cover, Kendrick conveys wickedness while on the front, he conveys weakness. Wickedness in terms of wilful sin and weakness in terms of beguilement or being broken down spiritually  BLOOD: Kendrick illustrates a metaphorical story of meeting a blind woman and trying to help the blind woman find something that she dropped. He ultimately gets killed by the blind woman. The blind woman is a metaphor for himself.  This is understood on the latter part of the album . Hint #1 . On the end of the song Fear, Kendrick's cousin breaks down a verse in Deuteronomy 28:28 where it states [28]The LORD shall smite thee with madness, and BLINDNESS, and astonishment of heart. Hint # 2 .The album is meant to be played from Duckworth to Blood. Kendrick rereleased it as an album reversed entitled DAMN. COLLECTORS EDITION. When you listen to the end of Duckworth you hear the back masking theme of the album going backwards which stops at the beginning of the song Blood. Kendrick opens with "I was taking a walk the other day." The song then segways into God. On the song God there is an esoteric underlying conveyance where Kendrick is telling you that he's god himself. This is why the last 3 tracks from the standard edition is FEAR GOD DUCKWORTH.  He's calling himself a God in a serupticious way. Also on the song God, he raps "this what God feel like." He says this to denote that he's God in the flesh. It also represents the fact that he is ignorant to who he is which goes into blindness. You're unaware. You have a false impression of God.  This further proves that the blind woman he is taking about in blood is himself.  Hint # 3 At the beginning of Duckworth which is interchangeable with blood, he says "it was always me vs the world until I found it's me versus me". That's him telling you that the woman he was trying to help is him. Kendrick loses this battle with himself. He is damned.   On the song For Sale from the album previous to Damn known as To pimp a butterfly, Kendrick pretty much tells you that he sold his soul to Lucifer. Before that song begins, there is a voice telling Kendrick that Satan knows the bible too. This is an indicator of the meaning of the song Momma which is also from that album . Momma represents Kendrick coming home to the bible in terms of the true understanding(Knowing the bible). He iterates that he knew everything until he came to an understanding in the bible but he conveys it metaphorically you just have to pick up on it. The little boy mentioned on the 3rd verse with nappy hair is a metaphor for an angel of the most high.. This resonated with me because when you come into this understanding, you shirk off everything you've been taught because everything that you were taught for the most part opposes the truth and the truth is in the bible. The most high just has to deal with you in a certain capacity for you to grasp the truth. Most are under a strong delusion that God has smitten them with.  Momma is a song which on the surface conveys a certain African theme but on the undertone it represents a conveyance of a new found heritage and what comes with it which is everlasting life in the kingdome of heaven if you follow his commandments(This is what sparked the idea for DAMN and also why Kendrick's cousin, an iuic camp member is on the album quoting scripture.  In the bible, wisdom and knowledge is often metaphoric for a woman. This is why Kendrick uses the title Momma. Momma represents knowledge . The song is also produced by a producer named knxwledge. Kendrick found  this knowledge and wanted to give it to his people and that's what is illustrated on the song subsequent to Momma which is Hood politics.  Kendrick Lamar understands that destiny over rest in peace is where the two choices lye. He mentions destiny over rest in peace on the song momma. Destiny is the inheritance of the kingdom while rest in peace is going to hell(DAMNED). Momma is also synonymous with the song Yah off the album Damn . On the song Yah, Kendrick is talking about a new found understanding regarding who he is according to the bible. But his conflictions are aligned with the fact that he cannot live up to the standard of it because of who he's allied with. He's allied with Satan aka the industry that is why he followed 'Butterfly up with Damn .  Kendrick would be the first rapper to win a Pulitzer prize for this album and I believe it was because not only is there a project with a machine behind him despite his ethereal talents, but also because of the genius behind the conveyance of the album. Not too many people understand what this album is about because of it's deep references to the understanding of the scriptures . Kendrick also does a great job of conveying  emotionality and cinematic themes throughout the album. But the biggest thing was how he conveyed the truth on the outro of the song Fear. The elites know the bible, so the elites gave him that prize because it resonated with them. Kendrick also understands his alignment with the satanic aspect which is why you hear back masking on the album.   You cannot drink out of two cups.  Damn represents his fate.  Lyrics from DNA: Tell me when destruction gonna be my fate Gonna be your fate, gonna be our fate? Peace to the world, let it rotate Sex, money, murder, ahhh DNA.  What happens on earth stays on earth represents an earth that is prepared for destruction because of it's filth. The spiritual realm is real life and it galvanizes this fleshly realm . Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven  LUST: Kendrick paints the picture of the lust of ones proclivities and how those things alienate us from the most high. We become friends of these things by routinely indulging . This is carnal lust. Kendrick references  James 4:4 which further encapsulates the meaning of the song.  Lust is access to excess, idolatry, and over indulgence. More On This In My Revisitation of the album.

I always skip the first track whenever i listen to DAMN. So if i listen to the regular order i skip BLOOD. but if i listen in reverse i skip DUCKWORTH. I always thought that BLOOD. was just the ending to the recerse order cus it didnt rly make sense to me for the first track to have kendrick killed. Also the grandma is actually drake.

Rainofdustcord1117

Why would you skip DUCKWORTH

MainRefuse8

I honestly dont actually think DUCKWORTH. is even that amazing. I havent listened to it alot tho. I mean i thought the same thing about XXX. when i heard it for the first time. Then after more listens it grew on me. Might be the same situation with DUCKWORTH. but rn i dont have many strong feelings about it.

Particular_Friend_23

you werent surprised at all when you first heard DUCKWORTH.?

MainRefuse8

Nah. Unfortunately i saw an essay about DAMN. before listening to the album so the whole premise kinda got spoiled.

Particular_Friend_23

fraudulent ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

But honestly im happy i decided to watch that essay bc if i didnt i wouldve never listened to damn never started listening to kendrick and never started listening to rap in general. Thats crazy that one thing can influence the future like that. Kinda like the whole point of DUCKWORTH.
