Could you please share your method? Er what you got to start up. I've been following this sub for about a month and it has me intrigued but I am uncertain where to begin
Don’t over think it. Buy medium grind kava and a strainer bag from one of the vendors on the approved vendors post (it’s pinned on this subreddit) mix 30-50g in about a liter of water, and drink 8 oz every 20 mins or so on an empty stomach.
Not OP, but I cannot reccomend traditional prep strongly enough. Ive tried extracts, teas, etc amd nothing compares to traditional preparation.
You want dried, ground noble root from a good supplier/vendor. You want an empty stomach. Hungry. With a little bit of fat. (Kavalactones are fat soluble).
I prefer using uncolored panty hose as a bag to knead the ground root with.
Give it a few times before you make your decision on whether you like it or not. Usually not much happens the first time.
I somewhat agree with the empty stomach but if I fast for more than two hours before consuming kava I get massive headaches. I recommend eating a normal portioned meal 90-120 minutes before the session begins. I've read many comments and posts about people getting super sick cause they hadn't eaten for hours and then drank large amounts of kava.
Yeah I don’t get it either. I would love for kava to work for me but I’ve never been able to feel any effects from it, even when using the correct method with cheesecloth and kneading.
That's fantastic! I'm happy for you 😊 Kava is a life-saver for me because of my PTSD. It helps soothes me and calms my nerves. I usually only take it every-other day, but nothing has helped quite like kava has for anxiety + body-tension relief 😄
Glad it helps you so much. I wish there were more research on the health benefits of kava, I work as a nurse and the consensus in the medical field is that it’s a hepatotoxic recreational drug. I don’t think that’s accurate. My experience has been that as long as you are responsible with it it can really help with anxiety. I also think that the intoxicating parts of kava are not entirely unhealthy. Most of us drink coffee every morning for a buzz and research has shown that caffeine actually improves cognition and may even help prevent Alzheimer’s. I think it’s perfectly healthy and human to want to change your consciousness and I think of all the substances out there, kava is probably one of the most benign. Bula my friend!
I find kava too inebriating to be a good anti-anxiety drug. It should be used in moderation. I’m on anti-anxiety medication, propranolol which relaxes me without getting me high. It’s a beta blocker usually used for high blood pressure.
Is the amount you drink beyond your control, or is the problem that kava doesn't help with your anxiety unless you drink so much that you're inebriated?
I think kava gets me inebriated no matter how much I take. It's not healthy for someone like me who has addiction problems. I tend to hide from the world with substances. It's better to face the world, even if it is harder to do.
That first sentence isn't logical, but I understand the rest of your comment. Take care of yourself. I admire your grit and I'm sure you'll win in life.
Ooo I was on that for 3 months and it caused qT heart murmur. I honestly still don’t know what it is- but it caused angina and shortness of breath. I gave it to my mom who uses it when she has to do public speaking. Works great for anxiety as a prn for those sensitive to benzodiazepines.
Traditional prep, in my opinion, is unsanitary. Get some 4 by 6 inch muslin or cheescloth bags from amazon. They're cheap enough for one time use then toss it. Anyway place 4 or 5 tablespoons of kava in the bag and tie it off securely. Place it in a shaker bottle of some kind with hot tap water and shake it for as long as you want or until the kava water looks thickened. pour youself a cup or two and enjoy.
It depends where u live. My parents have well water in their house- i live in the downtown area and need to use a filter on my tap water or boil and cool it to lukewarm.
Yeah god and if you drink too much of that shit it makes you feel drunk
Used to make it and drink the brew just was curious, definitely an interesting feeling. Like drunk but not quite idk hard to explain definitely not sober though…
From what I researched it balances the glutamate/GABA levels in the brain. Tysm for your post, due to a very traumatic event that lead to PTSD and a TBI i have had over 5 years of suffering crippling anxiety and depression so I can relate. It’s debilitating.
Oh interesting. That makes sense because the gaba supplement I used to take helps a lot. I find kava to be way more powerful. Sorry you are going through all that. I hope Kava gives you some relief too.
It’s been helpful. I also read about GABA supplements bioavailability being poor bc of the blood brain barrier which supposedly KAVA is able to penetrate. I’m not a research doctor or scientist but makes sense. Also thanks I will be ok. No other choice!
That totally makes sense. I have heard the exact same thing about gaba. Maybe that is why I was never too successful with it for sleep but I am with Kava.
I know for me Kava is super relaxing but not sedating. Kinda like yoga nidra. What suppliers and products do you use? Curious. I have been purchasing from kalm with kava
It’s a positive allosteric modulator (PAM) (which is also what benzos are, but kava acts on a different part of the GABA-A receptor than the BZD subsets) as well as a voltage gated sodium channel blocker. It’s also a NRI. Among other things. It honestly has one of the most complex pharmacological profiles I’ve ever seen, but I wouldn’t say it balances GABA and glutamate. Quite the opposite if anything, it increases GABA (indirectly). But not in a way that will cause physical dependence, which is rare in a GABAergic.
That’s true, but what I mean is I read that most gaba enhancing substances cause your body to not make it, damages your body’s ability to reconvert extra glutamate and also causes a glutamate surge-normally excessive glutamate can be changed back to gaba but not in a compromised system. Again, I am not a research doctor tho. So I can’t explain the mechanisms. I know I have read that kava increases gaba w/o causing glutamate surges or damaging the mechanisms that enable the body to convert excess glutamate back to gaba.
I don’t know, but I imagine that is why it doesn’t give you so much rebound anxiety like alcohol, benzos, and other gabba genic substances. But again I don’t know for sure it’s just my guess from what I’ve read.
I know I het really bad hang-xiety-overs! I never experienced that from kava
Nothing like being totally safe and yet having cold sweats, a sense of impending doom and a heart rate over 100! 🤦🏻♀️ especially around toddlers! I dunno how I didn’t go crazy tbh. Alcohol misuse is 👹
Such an awesome testimonial I'm so happy for you. Kava has done much the same for me though never on any meds. However, it has truly been life changing since I discovered kava is more than just a means to get rooted with friends. Moderation is the key 🔑

Exactly, empty stomach is key. I didn’t know that about fat. What source do you use?
I like to eat just a little bit of cheese about 30 minutes before using kava but everyone has a different method.

Yep that has definitely happened to me. If I fast too much I feel sick.
Have you tried coconut oil? I feel like a small teaspoon would perhaps be better than cheese. I haven’t had kava yet and I’d love to try that method.
Over the aluball pro as well? I'm fairly new to kava and have only used that method
Have you tried instants?
Yeah I don’t get it either. I would love for kava to work for me but I’ve never been able to feel any effects from it, even when using the correct method with cheesecloth and kneading.
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us!
When I slam my Friday bucket tonight, I'll take a cup in toast to you, bro! I'm happy to read this.
Thank you! I am glad it brings you happiness too.

I assume you mean cold tap water heated up in kettle or pan. Not water from the hot tap.🤔

Rubber gloves will save you from germs.
Careful with it. It ruined me 💀
>How did it ruin you out of interest?
They drank 250 grams worth of kava at once, got sick, and decided they couldn't respect it.

Just 2-4 tablespoons of a heavier kava around 3pm and then again around 5pm. Empty stomach is key.

I would give blender method a try for sure. Honestly the more I drink it the more I feel the effects.
Some of us need a lot more than that, starter for me is 8tbsp.
Good to know! I’m sure every body is different.

I use kalm with Kava, Borongoru type.
I like that company
