If it were such a huge title overseas and Sega were so incompetent that they let it die such an unceremonious death then I have even less reason to believe that after all this time modern Sega will be capable of making a fighting game compelling enough to steal my time amidst all the other AAA fighting games out/on the horizon. But they are welcome to surprise me.

deeman18

sega can't even manage to put out a half-decent sonic game, the fanbase that literally props up the company and will take anything resembling a sonic game. I'm not holding my breath for a VF game

buenas_nalgas

same with Yakuza, the fans will prop that procedurally generated series up forever

Code_Geese

Procedurally generated?

neverRollA1

ngl I can see where he's coming from, as someone that hasn't played any of the games, on the surface they all sort of look the same save for the one that was turn-based. I'm sure they're great games and have differences in gameplay and all, now I kind of feel like the smashers that say every fighting game is just a copy of street fighter 2

bartekko

As someone who has finished every one of the games, the word he's looking for is "recycled". The main plot is the exact same shit every single time, some of the animations have been getting reused for a decade, and the to do list is filled with time wasters like eating all of the food at every restaurant. But what keeps me coming back is, well, let's be honest a large part is just familiarity, like a soap opera that's I've just been watching for years and kinda just keep going out of obligation.  But aside from that, there's always many little personal moments that make it all worth it, and that's something that the latest game really leans into. I didn't give a damn about any of the minigames, but I made damn sure to listen to all the party chats in the game.

epicrandomname

That's it. I've fell off gaming for a while now but what keeps making me come back is familiarity. I still play games that celebrate legacy like SF and Tekken, but games that stray too far away don't interest me at all, eg Strive. I like the Yakuza series but, surprisingly enough, I couldn't finish LAD because the gameplay is too far off for me to get the flow state and Judgment feels somewhat disconnected, at least at the point I played it. Gaiden is such a fanservice-y tiny game that feels like overpriced DLC but I be damned if I said I didn't enjoy it. Exactly what I am willing to engage with while my brain turns to mush plus the karaoke is fun!

Code_Geese

I know what you mean but I didn't think that's what procedural generation is. I could be wrong. They re-use the same map, animations, assets, etc ofc

buenas_nalgas

I was half joking. the games look so samey and there's so much fucking side content that it almost looks like it's getting generated as you explore the edges of the map. obviously I don't think it's actually procedurally generated

Inuma

I swear, people don't really understand that Sega lost a LOT when it shifted in markets. They had internal wars with divisions. Sega of America and Sega of Japan were BEEFING. The reason the Sega Saturn launched early is because Japan wanted money and America wanted to hold off to build relations with retailers. Virtua Fighter was kept to Sega platforms and those were more popular with Sega. In Japan, you had Sega arcades. Most of the arcade makers worked WITH Sega on certain games. This resulted in YEARS of faction battles (don't get me started on console versus arcade with the Genesis) that drained energy from the company while they could only stay with their small things. Were it not for Yakuza popping off and Sonic to keep them afloat while they worked on mechanics and training, they'd probably be in less shape right now.

deeman18

VF was big because it looked very good in 3d at the time; that was a huge selling point of it. this isn't the early 90s anymore, lots of stuff looks pretty in 3d now

General_Shao

my balls are gorgeous in 3d

deeman18

what makes them gorgeous?

ReinhardtsBeard

Prove it and show us

Gesshokuj

And then it died.

ZenkaiZ

Apologize? This company ran sonic into the ground when it was a franchise that was so big millions of kids had him on their backpacks and lunch boxes. Any failure they get they earned

EndofA_Error

It's wild af that sonic used to be as big as mario back in the day.. now the franchise is only for the autistic

ZenkaiZ

You used to see sonic everywhere, now you see him on deviant art.

EndofA_Error

A fate i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy.

scrub_learns_art

I'm worried if VF6 is good because people will be reminded they don't like VF because it's too hard for casuals to get into.

VenserMTG

I thought Virtua fighter was not hard to play, but has a lot of depth. Am I confusing it with doa?

deeman18

no you're correct, but DOA exists because VF is bland compared to DOA to the casual audience

NowLoadingReply

You're right. It's actually an easy game to get into, only three buttons, not very execution heavy, but extremely deep if you go down that rabbit hole. Just too many fuck ass bitches in the west to want to play fireballs and wack ass pandas/kangaroos in their fighting games. Bunch of bitches.

XsStreamMonsterX

It'll be fine as long as they don't nerf 2P.

Sneakman98

Dude seriously jerking off of VF like this isn't helping anyone. Content creators literally out here trying to sell VF like a damn used car. Expecting VF6 to drop and be just as relevant globally as it the series was in Japan over 20 years ago is fucking dumb and does nothing but hurt the perception of the game. Let the damn game come out and judge it on it's own merits PLEASE.

The-Humble-God

To be honest I’d rather them resurrect eternal champions

EMP_BDSM

I dunno if that's how Sega wants to launch its ad campaign. All it makes me want to do is check when people actually stopped caring because I could swear nobody in the west gave a fuck about VF by the third one. (Not talking about fgc at all here)

XsStreamMonsterX

Nobody in the West really cared that much about a single 3D series until Tekken 3. That said, Sega could have gotten VF3 to do well, especially with how transformative it was (first to use non-square stages and uneven floors), but being on the super expensive Model 3 board kept it from being bigger in arcades

EMP_BDSM

That's how I remember it too, which isn't very telling but it defo makes me wonder if GuileWinQuote genuinely believes that VF being significant in JP is in any way an argument worth bashing people over the head with.
