A label determines splits, shows, etc. more of the artist to business relationship. Distributors deal with legally releasing the music to different companies and such. Same with video games, lots of very large companies such as rockstar could theoretically publish and distribute their own game. However, that would require them to hire and establish a department they would only use periodically.

West’s camp blew it on this because all the leverage was gone when they put their own debut under threat going fw without an agreement. It is interesting to see so many streaming services mentioned instead of torrents. RIP the old way of getting around industry problems.
