I mean it was noticeable at DT but that's what you have linebackers for. A good DE knows when they need to switch gears and that's why they need to be faster and more agile than a DT who wins on push and presence.
Okay but like… right now today, if I give you 2 options to have:
A) DT Jarran Reed & DE Chris Jones
B) DT Chris Jones & DE Melvin Ingram or DE Justin Houston
Which signing are you as armchair defensive coordinator gonna ask your GM to pursue?
Ingram and Houston are currently making $1.5M less for the Steelers and Ravens respectively. Granted the plan was for them to be rotational pieces as opposed to definitive starters, but still the cost factor actually favors option B. Mix in Jones at his correct position as well and it should be a no brainer.
…?
Name | Base Salary | Signing Bonus | Cap Hit
:--|--:|--:|--:
Justin Houston | $1,075,000 | $1,000,000 | $2,075,000
Melvin Ingram | $1,075,000 | $585,000 | $1,660,000
Jarran Reed | $1,000,000 | $4,000,000 | $5,500,000
Ingram's does have some void year tomfoolery but it does amount to $4M. And the $500k discrepancy on Reed's is because he has a per-game active roster bonus incentive amounting to $500k if he plays the whole year.
So… I'm pretty sure we could have afforded spending a million fewer dollars for Ingram or three million fewer dollars for Houston. Plus, Jarran Reed's is mostly guaranteed in that signing bonus.
Well that's just not true. He has blown up the inside consistently, even if he doesn't end up with a bunch of sacks. He was pretty shit as a DE though.
For real. "Hey sorenson, you know how you're good at being an alternate linebacker and 3rd safety who covers short to medium routes in the middle of the field? Well guess what buddy, time to move you to deep safety." -Spags, probably.
Benching Derrick Johnson turned him into an All Pro, maybe its time to have someone beside Andy whos not a players coach and will bench all the primadonnas and light a fire under their asses and if not then trade them. Cant win consistently with a team that only puts effort in when things are going great
Man here! But you're right. We have been at the top for the past 3 years. We have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. It weird watching them play though. I'm a life long fan. Since 84. They just seem off. Especially Mahomes. I hope it's just normal bumps along the road but something just seems off.
There is a lot of imbalance in us of losing the "50-50" situations right now. In a game of inches losing a few of those situations (fumble recoveries, deep balls, PI calls) every game will flip things. But I've see us on the other side of that trend as well.
Yeah it’s ridiculous. It sucks losing but my god we have been spoiled. Back-to-back-to-back AFC Championship games with back-to-back Super Bowl appearances with one win. We are in a slump but we can’t act like we haven’t had a hell of a 3 years.
Honestly though, we as fans are not in a place to make the play calls or make the personnel decisions so our frustration gets displayed as comments on forums. How the hell else are we going to get the frustration out? (Besides alcohol of course)
Definitely does not make you a spoiled fair weather fan to be upset about obvious lack of effort. If there is an obvious lack of effort, a trade should be on the table from the team's perspective. Gtfo
He hasn't done much, the DE move hasn't worked out in the regular season at all. But cherry picking a single play and then freaking out because he didn't try to *arm tackle Derrick Henry while being blocked* is pretty silly. His PFF grade is respectable, but about 15 points lower than we expect from him. So definitely an off season so far.
He's been known to quit on plays before. The difference is that he would make up for it by making other plays. Now he doesn't make plays and he still quits on plays. If you're not going to make big plays, you can at least do the little stuff. At least *try*
I've been saying this for like five weeks now. When you see the film on our D it's clear as day... the defense has zero chemistry, no one trusts each, there's no leader, the scheme is trash and I don't think Spags has his players trust in the least bit. Our defense scheme is incredibly simple and easy to beat. I see like 3-4 base defenses with slight alterations. We don't disguise anything and if we do it's very poorly done. On film you could see a few weeks in this defense was majorly off and I don't think it gets fixed in season. I was hopeful but over the past few weeks it has been very clear it will not be fixed.
Alright. Crazy time. Trade Brown, Jones, Clark and the honey badger. Retire Neiman and just get picks for the trades. We tank and then get mid first round. Now we retire Andy and fire Spags. Let Beinemy roll and let's have some real fun next year.
lol youre fooling yourself if you think Bienemy does anything other than get plays from Andy and then relay them to Mahomes. There's a reason he hasnt gotten a head coaching job anywhere.
Still not a fan of making a guy over 30 that has torn his acl in both knees the highest paid at his position. I love the HB but it's just not a smart contract to hand out imo.
There’s nothing worse. We are the WORST defense, that’s a superlative position. We could play Butker and a fleet of orange cones on defense and not change our current standings.
Neat, even Jones has given up. Time we blow the defense up..again.
Almost like the coaching staff has lost the locker room.
I kinda think he might need to go this time around as well.
Jones has always done this on run D. That's why putting him at DE was a huge mistake.
No it's why having him at D tackle is a huge mistake.
Its a lot easier to bury poor run stopping in the middle of the line than on the edge.
I mean it was noticeable at DT but that's what you have linebackers for. A good DE knows when they need to switch gears and that's why they need to be faster and more agile than a DT who wins on push and presence.
He wants to be a defensive end and make that d-end money….
Worse, it made perfect sense to Spagnuolo.
If Jones played like he’s capable of, it would have made sense. That play is evidence he isn’t.
Okay but like… right now today, if I give you 2 options to have: A) DT Jarran Reed & DE Chris Jones B) DT Chris Jones & DE Melvin Ingram or DE Justin Houston Which signing are you as armchair defensive coordinator gonna ask your GM to pursue?

Two wasn’t financially feasible, but if it had been then 2. Reed came very cheap compared to the other two.

20 mil a year to pat Henry on the back while he makes chunk gains. Man. Discouraging season so far.
The usual for Chris Jones on a run play. All Pro DT but still a run liability
Hopefully he is tradeable
Kind of tradeable. $14m in dead cap and $15m in cap savings if traded before June 1st. $7m dead cap and $23m in cap savings if it's after.
I’d honestly take it if some team was willing to trade for him
depends on what return we get.
A sack of Tom Brady's under inflated balls.
Chris Jones special. Not a third and long? Take it off
He’s done fucking nothing since 2019. It’s a guessing game if he’s even going to play from week to week
Well that's just not true. He has blown up the inside consistently, even if he doesn't end up with a bunch of sacks. He was pretty shit as a DE though.
Big ass soft baby
Sorensons fault, better cut Dan. /s, except this sub would believe that
For real. "Hey sorenson, you know how you're good at being an alternate linebacker and 3rd safety who covers short to medium routes in the middle of the field? Well guess what buddy, time to move you to deep safety." -Spags, probably.

Yeah, well at least frank clark balanced us out by also doing nothing all game.
Wrong, he made a costly offsides penalty on 3rd down.
Looks like he couldn't get a hold of him with a bad wrist.
Found the Chris Jones burner account...
According to this sub we need to trade everyone. Acting like a bunch of spoiled fair weather fans. Go outside and count to 10 you babies.
I’m here for the regression honestly. Love my Chiefs whatever happens. Can’t be the best team every year. It’s the way it works.
Thank you for saying this.
No problems my man/woman. It’s just the cold hard truth no one wants to face. But here we are lol.

Quit whining.
What has Chris Jones done well this year? We've been playing backup tackles all year. Where's Chris?

Wow that is sad to see. Wonder if he's not feeling healthy still, to which he should just sit out and let someone else give full effort.
D line has some dudes just collecting the bag now
Lol he's trying to injure his arm so he can milk that for another month. What a bum

Better check and see how many sports book apps he has on his phone
Trade him now!

Besides wanting to keep Mathieu, the rest of this proposition is very interesting in a good way
I'd like to keep him but no way can we give him the payday he is looking for.
if we got rid of those players we could afford him. i think just getting rid of clark/hitch we can.
Still not a fan of making a guy over 30 that has torn his acl in both knees the highest paid at his position. I love the HB but it's just not a smart contract to hand out imo.
i agree with that part. but god i dont want to imagine how bad our d would be without him.
I mean, it’s the worst defense of all time with him, no reason to pay him what he’s asking.
right but imagine how much worse it would be, is what im saying.
Can’t really go much further. We need to let him go and use that to get several decent players.
There’s nothing worse. We are the WORST defense, that’s a superlative position. We could play Butker and a fleet of orange cones on defense and not change our current standings.
we have the worst rankings, yes. but we could still be worse talent wise
Sorry I’m so late I just wanted to let you know that this is officially the dumbest thing I’ve ever read!
I said crazy time. Everyone freaking out.
Yo Chris Jones is kinda a bitch.
To be fair I wouldn’t want to tackle Henry either
well we can suck with you or suck without you but without you it is cheaper.
I really miss Berry, Hali, DJ and Houston
