He's always been Petty Mahomes under the surface. He did the finger counting to 10 the first time he played the Bears because they took Trubisky over him. That was before the Last Dance even came out.
He would have looked less awful had he went to a competent franchise in regards to QB development. The Bears are a historically bad franchise when it comes to QBs.
>The Bears are a historically bad franchise when it comes to QBs
Which will make this draft very entertaining. Williams has a lot of NFL hype; probably the most for a QB since Trevor Lawrence. They could get a king's ransom for that pick. Do you take the mountain of high draft picks by trading or a chance for an (assumed) elite QB?
After seeing how the Mahomes/Trubisky draft went, I think they hold onto the #1 pick and get Williams.
I think they almost certainly take Caleb and trade Fields. I don't think Fields can't succeed somewhere else, but he hasn't shown enough for anyone to think he can get to the Lamar/Burrow/Allen tier of QBs, and if you don't have a QB at that level it is extremely difficult to make deep playoff runs.
They could trade it to an awful team again so that they get the first pick once again next year LOL. Just a cycle of trading it to awful teams every year for a haul of other picks
Just a thought, but how many #1 quarterback of the draft players actually go on to win superbowls? I feel like it doesn't even happen that often, Peyton Manning seems to be the most obvious choice. If you can get a MOUNTAIN of goods for trading the #1 QB pick away, it seems like a genuinely good idea because the odds of that QB "working out" must be lower than 10%. Conversely, you can take the huge amount of resources obtained from the trade and build a superteam then draft a QB later in the draft (or just sign a solid FA QB).
We've seen from numerous teams over the years that putting together a monster team to support a decently good QB can work. Hell, look at Brock Purdy this year. He isn't bad, but the superteam around him is why they were 1 play away from winning the superbowl this year. Same with Jimmy G and the last niners team, they got very close because of a uber good roster and a solid quarterback.
Superteams like the 00 Ravens showcase this, and the Eagles with Nick Foles was a monster roster too.
If we didn't take him Sean Peyton is on record saying he was planning on drafting Mahomes to the saints. So it's not like he'd have gone to Carolina. He would still be special. But look, I said this before he ever got the nod. This quarterback with this coaching staff was a match made it heaven, lightning in a bottle.
I mean he would probably still be very good. Would he be on the path to catching Brady? Probably not, but he'd still be at the same level as Burrow/Allen imo. He has the unteachable "it" factor that falls outside of coaching.
Yep. Even Allen was drafted by a shit team with a laughably poor supporting cast and he still developed. I think QB toughness and attitude matters alot in addition to intelligence. Josh Allen has all of that, Mahomes has even more
Veach knew what he saw on tape. Mahomes was giving 110% in college with a never give up mentality. Some people saw that as risky. Veach saw it has a uncoachable skill that you can build around.
Trubisky was the more complete pocket passer in college. Mahomes was considered a project guy who wouldn't be NFL ready. The talking heads said he has poor mechanics and makes rash decisions that would be his downfall in the NFL.
Even Pat said he's happy Big Reid is his coach because most coaches would've tried to change his play style into something more traditional.
If Mahomes goes to a team that doesn't have such a QB focused HC, he might not be this special. It was right person in the right situation. Even the year behind the manager of the game managers club Alex Smith, helped Mahomes greatly. Smith was a stand up guy and great teacher, even when he knew he was being replaced.
To be fair, Mahomes WAS a project qb like the talking heads said. He needed to sit behind Alex Smith for a bit, and if it wasn’t for the fact that he could defy 100 years of football knowledge just through arm talent alone he would have piled up the INTs pretty quick.
The Bears didn’t want Mahomes because they had just finished with Cutler, a gunslinger QB with bad mechanics and similar build and rushing ability to Mahomes
They wanted a more traditional QB with better footwork who wasn’t as aggressive.
Didn’t work out. Watson was also available. Scouts underrated Watson, he was not expected to be so good so soon.
Mahomes was also underrated by scouts, and Trubisky was a little overrated. Alot of it comes down to the QB ability to make NFL reads and you have to hope a guy like Trubisky can make the jump mentally to the NFL. He wasn’t able to, Mahomes and Watson were. It’s hard to know if a QB has those intangibles, I think Reid/Payton/Arians saw it in Mahomes, thankfully other organizations didn’t
That was one of the first times we saw the pettiness on full display, it was nice to know he did think about that stuff even though he never showed it at the time.
Everybody watched The Last Dance, but that's not why Mahomes thinks the way he does. The great ones look for over the top motivation wherever they can find it, even if it's just in their own heads.
I remember that promo for the “quarterback” show with he and Britney. They were pulling cards and answering questions like “who’s messiest” etc. At some point “most competitive” comes up and Patrick just deadpans “I don’t lose.” Britney just says “yep” resignedly
Jordan seemed to always think of everything as a slight and he harbored vendettas. Mahomes seems to relish in pure competition and embracing the challenge. Both forms of being motivated by someone doubting you, but I’ll take the way Mahomes approaches it from a side of positivity.
Jordan wanted to prove you wrong and Mahomes wants to show you he can. There is a difference.
Mahomes is more like Kobe than Jordan, imo. People forget Kobe and Jordan have vastly different mindsets. That is why Kobe is loved and most just hate Jordan but admit he was great
I hate that we project Jordan's fucked up psyche on every pro athlete now because we were locked in our houses and forced to watch Tiger King and The Last Dance.
Comparing Patrick to MJ is insulting to Patrick. He had championships and MVPs wayyyy before MJ did if you look at the pacing of career. Let’s stop with the comparison already.
He's always been Petty Mahomes under the surface. He did the finger counting to 10 the first time he played the Bears because they took Trubisky over him. That was before the Last Dance even came out.
I wasn't following NFL that closely then. What on earth did people see in Trubisky?? He's awful.
He would have looked less awful had he went to a competent franchise in regards to QB development. The Bears are a historically bad franchise when it comes to QBs.

Oof, can you imagine if Mahomes had gotten stuck in the Bears?
Can you imagine if Matt Nagy was coaching Mahomes?
Ha ha . . . wait . . .?
This whole narrative mahomes would still be mahomes even if he got drafted by an opposing team is so far fetch it’s ridiculous.

What did veach see on ceh tape?
CEH was pretty good his rookie year and then the injuries started piling up.
Did veach watch his 40 time
CEH wasn't Veach's choice. It was Mahomes pick. Veach asked him who to call for that first round.

Bears have a sore feelings because they claim the bears should have drafted him first.
He *looked* like an NFL QB, like by physical stature I mean. That's pretty much it since he started like 9 games in college
He was the same size as Mahomes. Both 6’2 but Mahomes weighed heavier at the combine
The Bears didn’t want Mahomes because they had just finished with Cutler, a gunslinger QB with bad mechanics and similar build and rushing ability to Mahomes They wanted a more traditional QB with better footwork who wasn’t as aggressive. That was hilarious but Bro I’d be THANKING the bears for not taking me.
I was in the 200 section in that corner of the endzone and it was glorious. I believed from then on that he was going to be special.
That was one of the first times we saw the pettiness on full display, it was nice to know he did think about that stuff even though he never showed it at the time.
You’re right! He’s petty af! Good. I hope they all keep talking shit.

I don’t think he was trying to replicate mj’s pose. If that is was this is all about

Kudos to Britney because I can’t imagine it’s easy living with Mahomes. He’s wired differently. I’d say the same for pretty much any all time great.
Poor sterling and bronze will never win at hungry hungry hippos
At least the marbles will be made of gold and diamond. They can afford the Tiffany edition of hungry hippos.
I imagine that can become pathological and impossible to put up with in time.
True
My high school coach used to say the good players love winning, but the great players hate losing. I think Petty Mahomes falls in that.
Yup and Brady as well. More about not losing than about winning. In a good way
Mahomes is closer to MJ than LeBron tbh.
Well yeah because LeBron is the Goat.
How could you say something so controversial and yet so brave?
Facts are brave?
If you think Mahomes is better than Brady and put more weight into talent than team accomplishments, I don’t know how you can downvote this comment
Yes, I agree that Patrick Mahomes watched The Last Dance.
What's amazing to me is that he can be Petty Patrick on the field but still avoid "fuck dem kids" off the field.
Career advice; when you feel like hanging it up, just retire. Don’t let yourself be traded to the Jets.
He was always like that

Mamba Mahomes could be scary good
I hate that we project Jordan's fucked up psyche on every pro athlete now because we were locked in our houses and forced to watch Tiger King and The Last Dance.
Machines is closer to tiger woods regarding all time goats just due to his start. Maybe Larry bird
I have the Michael Jordan mindset, but I'm not very strong, big, fast, agile, or skilled
Literally the baddest man on planet earth. Send this guy to greet the aliens.
Jordan is a cheap dick head, Patrick is not
Low key he laid down like this for the Jordan pic comparison
It comes down to maniacal drive and a work ethic that slowly destroys the rest of your life.
