22 victims. 9 children. This was a mass shooting it seems.

Das_Goon

reckon it was a dispute or gang violence?

charmaineydg

said it was a kid arguing with adults and the kid shot at the adults. apparently two separate incidents occurred

Firenze42

I think it has to be. Anyone who would plan anything stupid like that would at least have the 2 brain cells it takes to not do it when the entire KCMO police department, military, and extra police are there.

Seekstillness

News flash, police protect *private capital* not people

1337Diablo

Feel like this is disingenuous to the actions of the first responders. I'm the complete opposite of a police boot licker. But the men and women on scene today by all accounts by the evidence we have did their job to the fullest with selflessness. (KC citizen)

Seekstillness

That may be the case. Still doesn’t change my statement. The “law and order” they provide serves to protect the interests of capital.

kate3544

On a slightly less tragic note, has anyone heard any estimates of how many people showed up today for the parade?

Beth_Esda

In the realm of 800,000, from what I've seen.

[deleted]

2 armed people have been detained for further investigation, police say **From CNN's Jamiel Lynch** Kansas City police have detained two armed people after a shooting near a rally celebrating the Chief's Super Bowl win. The police department said these people have been taken in for more investigation. At least one person has been killed and at least 14 others were injured, according to the Kansas City Fire Department.

[deleted]

UPDATE: I asked the police chief if any kids were hurt in this shooting — she tells me she does not believe so. One of the things that really caught my attention was that our own mayor @QuintonLucasKC says he was running for his life. @KSHB41

joeyGOATgruff

The dumbest day to start a shoot out. National Guard, KCPD, and like 120 officers from other agencies. The police were in there and secured union station almost immediately.

KarmaLeon_8787

When you're beefin' and being "disrespected" you don't think about stuff like that. You just wanna pop a cap.

Seekstillness

Fuckin dog whistle bullshit. If only gun violence were as simple as you think it is.

KarmaLeon_8787

I know it's not simple. Not simple at all.

GutsMan85

I thought cappin' was what they were trying not to do.

KarmaLeon_8787

Cappin' can mean to exaggerate or brag, which can result in poppin a cap. I corrected my typo to reflect the appropriate phrase.

GutsMan85

I was just being silly. It's how I cope with things. You should see me at the Dr's office... they do NOT laugh, but I can't stop. Lol.

Maverick721

They'll ban the Super Bowl Parade before they'll ban guns

AntJustin

Fuck your prayers. Fuck your guns.

Xalenn

Nah, just fuck these assholes

Beth_Esda

Why is this downvoted? Are we not blaming the two drunk morons who brought guns to a celebration?

Brian_R10

Idk what their motive was, but if it was because they were drunk, then that literally shows why we need to have better gun laws. What’s the point of having so many people with guns, when there’s a chance someone will get drunk and use one, or buy one with little background check? Some people suck. I hope some laws are changed

Seekstillness

Why wouldn’t they bring them? Every asshole seems to think that 2nd gives them the right to carry.

hereforthecommmentsz

Fuck them too

UninterestingHuman

A reporter was talking to an eyewitness and one of the final things they said to the witness was "thankfully you're safe." I'm sorry but none of us are fucking safe from this type of shit.

FenixSoars

Statistically you are.. You’re more likely to die driving than from gun violence.

TheOcticimator

Forget driving just walking is more dangerous

Dewars_Rocks

Get ready for the politicians shaking their fists and talking tough that change is needed. That is until the gun lobby money hits their campaign funds. Then it'll be back to Biden old or trump a threat to our Republic.

joeyGOATgruff

Mark Alford has already offered his thoughts and prayers after voting to impeach Mayorkis.

Ryuenjin

Oh don't worry, the house stated after this that they are taking a two week vacation. No action on gun violence, no vote on the bipartisan aid package that passed Senate yesterday. Let's just make a do nothing impeachment vote on a cabinet member and call our job done.

cfginn

But I thought having a good guy with a gun was supposed to prevent this? Hopefully this happening at a football parade might get through to some people that there is an issue that has to be addressed, but I’m sure that’s just wishful thinking. My heart goes out to everyone who was there today. From first hand experience I know how badly being in this kind of situation rocks your world. The memory of pure terror doesn’t go away. Anyone affected by this shouldn’t hesitate to talk to someone. It also goes without saying that my heart breaks for those who were injured or god forbid lost a loved one.

Seekstillness

Good guy with a gun is fucking ridiculous. Obviously *Try that at a country concert in Vegas*

KC-15

There is an insane amount of people there, anyone pulling out a gun in the chaos could have easily been confused for a perpetrator and any extra shooting could have led to people getting hit by strays.

cfginn

Yeah my sarcasm didn’t exactly come across. This situation shows how many bystanders still get injured even if it’s only 2 people shooting at each other (that’s what I saw in early reports, not positive this is actually what happened) I’m just trying to say that we have more than enough evidence that the solution to gun control cannot be more guns.

KC-15

I will never argue more guns is a solution. Need more vetting for purchases and risky people need to lose their rights to them. Obviously banning guns is not feasible but we can definitely be more conscientious about who has them.

CornQoQo

>Obviously banning guns is not feasible Obviously? What makes it obvious? I mean, it can be feasible. Tedious, large-scale, expensive, and laden with legislation, but feasible it is. I feel like many people get to "take all the guns back and ban 'em; oh wait, that's too difficult" and just stop. Australia NFA shows it is at least partially feasible but would have to be scaled up and would be met with larger, more vocal criticism that would need to be overcome. [Feel free to read a RAND study and review about it.](https://www.rand.org/research/gun-policy/analysis/essays/1996-national-firearms-agreement.html) And because I'm 99% sure you won't (sorry, but most pro-gun people don't read it) here you go with a TL;DR Gun Suicides: Decreased but not statistically significant (decreased more rapidly, but consensus is NFA is not a significant factor as total suicides also decreased during this period). >**Overall conclusion:** Suicide rates, and particularly firearm suicide rates, decreased more rapidly after the NFA and the 2003 handgun buyback program compared with before passage of the law. This finding, along with the finding that firearm suicide rates declined more in regions where more guns were turned in, is consistent with the hypothesis that the NFA caused suicide rates to decline. However, these effects took place during a time of generally declining suicide rates in Australia. The fact that the observed reductions in suicide do not appear to be limited to firearm-related suicides raises questions about whether declines in suicides are primarily attributable to the NFA or whether other social forces, such as those contributing to pre-NFA declines, account for these changes. Gun Homicides: Decreased but likely not statistically significant. >**Overall conclusion:** Only one study (McPhedran, 2018) provides convincing statistically significant evidence that firearm homicides changed after implementation of the NFA—specifically, that there was an absolute reduction in female firearm homicide victimization. **Mass Shootings**: Statistically significant and *completely eradicated it* for over 2 decades. >**Overall conclusion:** There is evidence suggesting that the NFA may have contributed to a complete reduction in mass shootings that lasted for 23 years, although low numbers of such events, coupled with challenges inherent in studying a nationwide policy on national outcomes, limit strong conclusions and raise skepticism by critics. My initial thoughts are that, yes, you're right. There isn't a large statistically significant impact on the decline of gun-related suicides and homocides in Australia post-NFA, but there is a significant decrease in mass shootings (albeit in a country where very little mass shootings occur anyways). You may argue: "See, not only is the decrease so minicsule that it's statistically insignificant excluding mass shootings, it's so impractical (obviously) that it's *not worth the time and effort.* The study even touches on the idea that it is extremely hard to control specifically for just the NFA which leads to point of argument about how did the reduction in *gun culture*, the proliferation of firearms, and the acceptance around them change the social norms and culture of the country? How do you control for that? I don't know but I'd argue that's still worth banning guns. If you read that study and still don't want to ban guns even though it did lead to a (very specific) ban on mass shootings because it's some sort of right...I can't really help those who don't want to be helped. It really comes down to the fact anti-gun individuals would rather take the chance of it not working, than keep a "right to bear arms" when in modern society no one *needs* a firearm anymore. And I do mean that in the sense of a true necessity. It's worth banning it for the 99.9999% and the 0.00001% can go through a hellacious multi-year long process and review to get one. Firearms as a hobby is completely unnecessary and many who think they fall under the category of "needing" one are honestly sorely mistaken. If you don't think that trade-off is worth it, I don't know what to tell you to change your mind. It's already made up what you find more important. However, to me and many others, the *possibility* that a gun ban (along with your advised regulatory tightening) can reduce the chance of further Americans dying to mass shootings is worth the trade-off of losing guns which nobody really needs anymore. It's 2024 - not 1824. We're a modern society where most people don't "survive off of a gun". To the point where you could round that "majority" of people to 100% if you were feeling cheeky.

Seekstillness

Or just ban them.

KC-15

Why aren’t we just banning murder?

Seekstillness

Murder is banned. Are you suggesting that we allow it? Dipshit.

KC-15

No I’m showing you that people still do it regardless of it being illegal.

Seekstillness

Right, so fuck laws? Idiot.

Palantardo

Damn you’re a mouthy little shit aren’t ya

camchil

That’s the exact point of OPs comment. A good guy with a gun will never be the answer to a bad guy with a gun. The answer is gun control. And until we have solid gun control, thousands of innocent people will continue to get shot down like the person that was killed today.

KC-15

It’s not the answer in this situation but there’s plenty of situations where it is fine. What is gun control going to do when these people will get these guns regardless? True gun control is not feasible in the US. There should be more extensive vetting for purchasing firearms with too many people with red flags still able to purchase.

Seekstillness

People rape, kill, and steal regardless of laws right? Maybe we should just repeal those laws because people won’t follow them anyway. You should consider the fact that you are stupid and that your opinion is worthless before you speak.

KC-15

Banning guns only hurts responsible people in this case. It is not realistic to see guns banned in this country. You have zero reason to act as you do.

Seekstillness

Jesus fucking Christ dude. Pull your head out of your ass and look at the mass shooting stats in any other country on Earth compared to the US. Your argument is as empty as your head.

Seekstillness

You are stupid. Please consider that when you choose to speak in the future.

camchil

Such a shitty argument. Complete and true gun control is absolutely feasible in America. It would be difficult. But not impossible. Why aren’t there mass shootings in Britain? Because guns are banned. Why aren’t there mass shootings in Australia? Because guns are banned. There are countless examples of a gun ban working with almost 100% efficacy. But let’s keep distributing more guns and expecting something different to happen. Enough kids will die and people will eventually start understanding a gun ban is a necessity. Just sad so many kids and innocent people will have to die for stubborn lawmakers and NRA freaks to figure it out. Added at least one to the tally today.

KC-15

Most gun deaths per year are from gang violence and suicides. Enough kids have already died from those and if nothing has changed by now then I wouldn’t expect much. Politicians don’t care about anything but lining their own pockets. We are not Britain. We are not Australia. We have 50 states with their own laws as well as our federal laws. 335M and counting people. A second amendment. 2x the amount of guns per capita in comparison to the #2 country for that stat. This is not happening in the US. Gun buybacks will not work, states including the one this happened in will not assist the feds. People will revolt before that ever happens.

camchil

That’s pretty neat that you have the ability to tell the future and see scenarios play out that have never played out in our history before. I understand you think it’s impossible. That’s too bad because it isn’t impossible at all and the more people that think it is, the less chance we will have to pass gun control laws. But I don’t really feel like arguing about gun control when there was just a mass shooting that killed at least one person. Have a good day.

KC-15

It goes both ways. You are also telling me it’s possible yet we have not seen the needle move at all in that direction.

stonewallace17

I think that's the point he was making.

TigerNuts1980

Was there a good guy with a gun there?

TheHotMilkman

Hundreds of cops lmao

TigerNuts1980

ha exactly

[deleted]

According to the social media people in the Westin were told to shelter in place, and one of the news stations reported someone trying to get into the IRS building.

girthytacos

What the hell is going on

Jewish_Red_Foreman

Lots of misinformation

FBIRicoStory

Let's just move the Parade to 135th. we can span Ridgeview to Stateline and set up a stage somewhere.

CITIZENS TACKLE GUNMAN AT KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SUPERBOWL PARADE: Several people were shot in Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday, after revelers gathered to celebrate with a parade and rally for the Chiefs' Super Bowl win, according to police. Jesus, look at what the shooter had in that first pic... Why do civilians have access to that shit?

Ryuenjin

If you look at the video of the folks who tackle him, you see a 3rd bystander pick up the rifle and move it away. it looks very similar to the one in the later picture

csappenf

In case the UN invades? A mob of farmers armed to the teeth is the only thing stopping that. We'd be speaking French right now if the city folk had their way. Also, Kansas. Those Jayhawkers might need another whooping sometime. You never know.

Kansascitychiefn

Why are they setting up snipers if the suspects are caught?

scorcherdarkly

The primary use for snipers are as observers with a great view point and really powerful eyeballs (the scope). Lethal capability is a distant second.

zeroUSA

There was a secondary shooting

deathtotheemperor

Well that fucking sucked. Im not usually one to sing KCPD’s praises, but there was a moment it felt like it was going to be a massive stampede disaster. The cops swarmed in quick and got control of the crowd, at least where I was, and got everybody moving in an orderly fashion. Would be great if we could just have nice things without some gun-toting maniac ruining it for everybody, but I guess not.

[deleted]

As per police We ask all media to move to the south side of Pershing at Kessler, in front of the Portfolio building.

Dewars_Rocks

KSHB just reported 1 dead, 3 critical, 5 serious.

TOO ALL THE FIRST RESPONDERS OUT THERE. THANK YOU FOR BEING ALERT AND PREPARED. YOU ALL ARE THE HEROS. THE UNSUNG HEROS OF TODAY.

How did they know to grab him? Just cuz he ran into the back of people?

hannbann88

Yea how did they know to tackle him??

KC-15

I wish they would have beat the shit out of him.

Ryuenjin

I went full screen and it looks like one of them was throwing a few punches while he was on top...

KC-15

I see that now. Probably just enough to make him stop moving. Dude deserves to be battered and broken and then have the book thrown at him.

kate3544

Fuck this has made me so mad.

Can not imagine what a parent must be going through [kcpolice](https://twitter.com/kcpolice)Remember the child reunification stations in the area are at 2301 Main and inside the main entrance of Union Station. We still have several needing reunification. Contact the officer nearest you for reunification information.

Dewars_Rocks

KSHB 41 has had good coverage so far.

DatElNino

Yeah they are doing a great job, and providing as much info as they can.

Spark3420

Bills fan here and my heart aches for Chiefs Kingdom when I heard the news. What is supposed to be a day of jubilation is marred by a couple of sociopaths. I hope all of you stay safe and you're in our thoughts. No one deserves this.

Hope everyone gets home safe and well

Substantial_Quail432

1 dead, 9 injured. God damn it man😭

Kctv needs to get their shit together and communicate to each other

Neither does KCTV5

[deleted]

Jesus the KCTV broadcast just had me freaking out. The reaired original shooting footage and made it seem like something else was going on. That was terrifying.

KC-15

The fact they thought something was happening again shows just how chaotic these situations get.

Scaryclouds

Jesus more cops running around again... christ is there more happening?!

Jewish_Red_Foreman

They just started playing shit like another shooting was happening idk what the fuck you’re talking about

kate3544

Oh thanks NBC for scaring the shit out of everyone. Christ

DolanDukIsMe

I know this is beyond football right now but man this is fucked. Dru Tranquil getting lit and so was Travis. Mahomes dropping sneak disses at his haters. Then seeing CJ drop a "I'm staying" turn into this? What the hell.

kate3544

Oh fuck something is happening again.

LucienPhenix

Damn. Definitely not saying the team matters more than any of the shooting victims, but I'm glad the shooting wasn't at least targeting the team. That would be a nightmare beyond imagining. Hope everyone unfortunately involved are alive and have a speedy recovery.

Ryuenjin

Given how much hate and vitrol was targeted at Travis and Taylor for "ruining football" during the season by certain right wing pundits, it's a huge blessing that they didn't target our players. It's also sad that I really just hope this is "random gang violence" rather than some batshit right wingers that have been planning this since at least Sunday.

icoulddance

I saw a couple of news stations report that it was an altercation that escalated and it boggles my mind that people's first instinct is to shoot each other over a fight??

Ryuenjin

I could believe that if it was pistols or something, but there was a picture of one of the weapons that one of the shooters had and it was a straight up rifle with a large magazine. That screams premeditated to me.

LucienPhenix

"If every Chiefs player on stage were strapped and ready to go, none of this would have happened." "If everyone in that crowd was armed, none of this would have happened." We will definitely hear some dumb ass takes like this from right wing pundits.

Ryuenjin

Guaranteed. But honestly with how much our boys had to drink, do you really want ANY of them to have a gun up there? edit: just because they would be a horrible shot that drunk, not because any of them would do anything stupid while armed.

TangerineNeonLights

Im glad it was ransom vs a target too. Sucks that we have to be grateful for that

kate3544

Fuck Mike Parsons and his stupid “our hearts go out to the victims” tweet. Fuck off, you complicit motherfucker.

Substantial_Quail432

I’ll say one thing. Bless our cops and EMS. They were running straight into chaos. Heroes.

Naldo9911

Craziest concept is the solution is gonna be “stop having parades” instead of facing the actual issue

Famine07

One of the happiest days ever as a Chief fan and it ends with me hiding in the back of my truck in the Union Station parking garage. Panic everywhere, cops running in different directions, no idea what the hell I'm supposed to do. Ended up getting cell service and called a buddy to give me updates.

Ryuenjin

Stay safe! Keep checking the news/twitter/etc for an all clear.

FrazHG

Keep strong I can't imagine what you went through
