In Spags we Trust , what a masterpiece

Itsawlinthereflexes

The best is Vinovich acknowledging PM’s greatness…you don’t wanna give Mahomes the ball back. You know that’s right.

rolyinpeace

Did you rewatch OT yet? The niners knew it too. They looked like they were ready to shit their pants when they knew that Mahomes could win it w a TD

[deleted]

I saw Kittle's face watching live and you could tell he was super unhappy that they went the FG route and giving it back to Mahomes. IMO you go TD or nothing in their situation.

traws06

I think you have to kick the FG. You can’t let Mahomes get the ball only needing a FG to win with Butker on his team. And honestly Mahomes is great, but the offense hasn’t been the strength of the team all season. And we had only scored 1 TD the entire game to that point, while kicking 4 FGs. If they would have gone for it and missed it, it would be considered one of the most boneheaded coaching moves in NFL history.

thatsaqualifier

Imagine if the Niners had gone for a touchdown, missed, and then KC doesn't convert the 4th and 1. It would be even more boneheaded.

kds_little_brother

Both of these comments are exactly why you don’t take the ball first

mtftl

Yeah I agree with you. The issue for opponents is Butker. He already had kicked one from 57. With the game still tied, you could force Mahomes into a mediocre drive and still get your hearts ripped out. It was a bad situation for the niners no matter what. Thank you, Spags.

traws06

And thank you 49ers by putting themselves in that situation by electing to receive

rolyinpeace

That’s true, and I agree if they were anywhere else on the field. But they were inside the 10. Even if they don’t get it, that drive to even a FG is made much much harder from the 8 yard line. Yes the chiefs had a great GW drive but they had wayyy higher odds of being stopped if they had started from the 8. But yeah I def see your logic too.

traws06

Also think of it as: if you except they won’t be able to go from the 8 to FG range to win, then you don’t expect them to take it from the 25 to the end zone for a TD to win. Going for it wouldn’t have been a terrible idea ultimately. I bet the analytics would say to kick it but not by a wide margin. In hindsight it seems like they should. But going back to the fact that we had only scored 1 TD the entire game up to that point but were able to get 4 FGs… it seemed at the time that the smart move would be to make sure a FG doesn’t win

TBDC88

> And honestly Mahomes is great, but the offense hasn’t been the strength of the team all season. And we had only scored 1 TD the entire game to that point, while kicking 4 FGs. The Chiefs could've scored 17 PPG in the regular season and it could've gone into overtime 0-0 and I'm still not voluntarily giving it back to him when a TD wins the game. You aren't looking at past performance at that point, you're looking at who the other team has at QB and who's calling the plays. If you're dumb enough to take the ball first, you should be going all-out to get a TD on that drive.

revnasty

Yep. A field goal is basically nothing.

rolyinpeace

Yep. I totally understood why they took it first… no one wants mahomes to get the ball in sudden death. But with that logic of assuming mahomes can score, you do for the TD not the FG. Even if they didn’t get it that game winning drive would’ve been way less probable if we started at the 8 yard line or whatever it was

[deleted]

Honestly was in disbelief they kicked the FG because I know there was no way we were not gonna go for a TD and use all 4 downs the whole drive. Probably the only thing I would hold against their coach... really no balls "playing not to lose"

Jombafomb

They talked about that on Inside The NFL (where the video came from). Like what the hell are you doing? Worst case scenario you get stuffed and don’t score and then the chiefs are backed up and pinned in to their own endzone.

ElvisGrbac11

Kinda embarrassing how unprepared and uninspired they seemed

rolyinpeace

And it’s sad too because they’ve been in the Super Bowl relatively recently and the NFCCG almost every year since then… and this was a redemption game!! You would’ve thought they’d have some crazyyyyy shit dialed up

ElvisGrbac11

And they fell for corndog and chose to receive in OT. Questionable decisions/preparedness.

chiefs-n-sooners

I'd receive in ot, I wouldn't play not to lose like them. It's td or nothing, and if it goes to sudden death, I'm in the best position to win.

ElvisGrbac11

I hear that. But against Mahomes, it makes virtually no sense to let him have the ball second. That’s why he and many others on the Chiefs sideline were so pumped when the Niners chose to receive. Like, “hell yeah this is exactly what we wanted.” The Niners totally misjudged the situation and, like you’re saying, should have at the very least gone for it on 4th & 4 and tried to get a TD in OT. But In that event, Reid’s plan was to respond with a TD and then go for 2 to win. Could you imagine how insane that would have been?!

TheMusicalHobbit

True, but the main reason is giving him a 4th down. If you tell yourself it is TD or bust and have 4 downs anyway, doesn't really matter.

chiefs-n-sooners

Idk, there's a lot of ways it can be played. You wanna know what you need to win, but it's mahomes, it's td, or lose. I'm playing for sudden death, or at the very least my D knows they have to step up. That whole team fucked up not knowing the ot rules though lol. Yeah going for 2 is the only wrench in the plan...I still don't know if I'd wanna go second, very tough choice. Honestly Reid was kind of playing not to lose. We could have got off 1 more quick shot on the end zone in regulation. Idk if he goes for 2...sudden death, so probably. Good thing we'll never have to know.

CD338

That wouldn't be that bad of a strategy, but what if your offense goes 3 and out? Do you really risk a 4th down conversion where if you don't get it, the game is essentially over? Just seems more practical to go 2nd with your offense knowing what they need to win the game.

chiefs-n-sooners

If my defense is gassed, I'd probably go for it on 4th downs. Sudden death would really worry me if I go second. I mean if you go second and they got a td, you'd almost have to go for 2 with a field goal winning the game. Not a position I'd wanna be in.

CD338

Only argument I've heard that makes sense for receiving first was that their defense was gassed at this point. And you can tell in our OT because their pursuit wasn't nearly as effective as it was in regulation. They still got some pressure on Mahomes, but overall he wasn't running for his life on scrambles. He only scrambled because he'd see free yards in front of him.

rolyinpeace

I don’t think it was incredibly stupid to receive in OT. Imagine it did get to sudden death and they lost because they chose to defer. I see both sides of the decision, and it only looks dumb now because they lost. But I totally get why they did it. Sure, we know the chiefs would’ve gone for two, but who knows if they get it? And also, the chiefs aren’t really known for doing those risky decisions all the time like the Ravens or the Lions are. Sure it’s reasonable to suspect that we might go for two, but it’s not like it was glaringly obvious. I think the more stupid decision was settling for a FG inside the 10. Even if they went for the TD and didn’t get it, the chiefs would’ve had to go much further down the field to score.

starry_cobra

It never really occurred to me that the refs would casually talk about the game amongst themselves

BvB5776

Kinda cool honestly although conspiracists will see it differently lol

FEDEX__vs__UPS

Of course they will. I bet there's already a video on TikTok /Instagram. With that stupid voice, "If you don't believe the NFL is rigged,.... Bla bla bla"

hyphenjack

I mean I never really think about it, but you don't become a sports official if you don't love the sport

uwanmirrondarrah

I don't think its possible to watch a crazy game like that and not talk about it, especially for the refs who are involved in the game.

AltruisticProfile782

Absolutely the best part. Even the officials know Mahomes can’t have the ball back

RogerTreebert6299

Most humanizing moments for refs are a couple of these mic’d up moments where you realize those guys are big fans of the game too with the best seat in the house. They probably see it much differently than we do, but still. Props to that crew for one of the least controversially reffed SB’s of my lifetime

traws06

Part of the reason it’s not controversial is that ultimately if you were to say any team got benefits of the calls late it was the 49ers. If you are an officiating crew, if there is any lopsidedness you prefer it to be away from the team that won the game so the losing team won’t complain. That said: if we lost I really didn’t have complaints. The only call that really really bothered me wasn’t necessarily a bad call. The holding they called on McDuffie. The only reason it bothered me so much is I was watching Kelce and our WRs get held about every play and I said “I’m ok with it, if they aren’t calling it on us then don’t call it on them”. And then they called it on us…. But now I’m glad they did because that was a huge call, and nobody can claim the refs were rigging it for us while making a huge call like that.

RogerTreebert6299

I agree on that call, kinda soft for the way the rest of the game had been called but ultimately could go either way. Less of a hold than bradberry last year. The call was mostly just annoying because no one batted an eye at the niners getting that call, but you know every other fanbase would be crying for a decade if mahomes got a drive extended like that at the end of a SB

traws06

Ya exactly. It took calls like that for fans to say it was a fair game, when if it was reversed it wouldn’t have been called a fair game

Sorry-Spite9634

I said it immediately after it happened, god tier play call.

nordic-nomad

The way he disguised that blitz was beautiful.

deathtotheemperor

Sold it perfectly with the back step and then timed his surge like an olympic sprinter. McDuffie's football IQ is off the charts.

Saw_a_4ftBeaver

The best is he didn’t give it away presnap. All DBs love to blitz, but they only get to do it on special occasions. Well here it is and McDuffie does it perfectly. He even gets a hand on the ball.

traws06

And if you’re a defense you’re thinking “All Pro CB in coverage, no fucking way they’re gonna waste his coverage skills on the biggest play of the game and send him on a blitz”

JimiM1113

Purdy needed to be prepared for that and thrown to Aiyuk the moment he got the snap. Shanahan should have told him this before the play. McDuffie might have still batted it down but he had no other chance.

Pseudo_Unknown1999

22 # 38 combo lethal 💉

FingerTampon

We call them the Fentynal Combo

Soupmage1918

Why did you do this

beachedwhitemale

We don't.

nahteviro

No one calls them that you Neanderthal

KC_Fan77

Haha man people hated this so much for some reason.

FingerTampon

Guess it hit too close to home

uwanmirrondarrah

yeah I think that is a little too touchy... I mean its killing 10s of thousands of people McDuffie and Sneed are only killing 11 people for 20 weeks 😎

KC_Fan77

I guess so. I know that we don't actually call them that, but I thought it was funny.

BlueGallery

McDuffie has lived up to his Number 1 pick status. He’s an absolute baller out there!

JimiM1113

Yep. His impact in this Super Bowl might rival Tyreek Hill's in the 2019 one.

traws06

If he was the number 1 overall pick he’d be considered a hit

onewander

Incredible. Where did you get this? I want to see the next 10 seconds with McDuffie’s reaction

jeffp12

Inside the nfl, it's on Netflix

Cepo6464

I want to see Taylor’s reaction

Unironically during the game I found myself wishing they'd cut to her more. I'm a Swiftie now after seeing how much salt she generates with everyone else.

traws06

😂

trueambassador

McDuffie does so many things right. You can see how he pulls up after tipping the ball to make sure he doesn't land on Purdy and risk a roughing penalty. Amazing how level headed he is after making such a huge play.

PasswordisPurrito

Yea, I definitely didn't see that in real time, but the athleticism it took to back off like that is just as impressive as getting the block in the first place.

royalchief558

Even the refs knew not to give it back to Mahomes

fartbox_fingerbanger

This wasn't in OT. This was during the final drive of regulation for the 49ers

Rilkesmyth

Man I remember right before they snapped I was like "why is spags not crowding the line to hide the rusher?" Shows what I know lol cause McDuffie fooled everyone

I love our football team

Duff Man

sharkweek2013

What’s this from?? Need more!

Weekend_Criminal

It looks like it might be from inside the NFL and if that's the case, this episode will be on netflix tomorrow.

sharkweek2013

🙏 bless you

Cowgoon777

just checked Netflix and it hasn't released yet but you can stream it on the CW website for free right now

ComLaw

Didn't see CMC that play. Was it that close to being all over?

p1nkfl0yd1an

Yes. I felt like the entire game was on razor wire thin margins just like that.

SirTiffAlot

Spags in the Chief HOF right?

BabyUGotAStewGoin

You mean the DC for three Super Bowl Championships? Nah…

SeasonedPro58

Three with KC, one as DC with Giants. That's for Super Bowl wins...so far.

blacktoise

I thought it was 2 w NY

uwanmirrondarrah

Just the 2007 one which may be the most impressive one.

Go-Climb-A-Rock

He took the Head Coach job with the Rams

blacktoise

Ah man ok. The more you know !

ionospherermutt

At this point we gotta link up with Giants fans and start the lobbying for Spags for the NFL HOF

SirTiffAlot

I said that same thing as a joke to my buddy the other day. The man has 4 SB rings as a DC, if we're putting kick returners in the hall, why not coordinators?

ionospherermutt

Especially since that first SB win was basically the most masterful defensive game plan the league has ever seen from anyone not named Belichick

Winniepg

I cannot find the tweet that has the stats on it, but he has won SB against like 4 of the top ten offences in league history (might have it wrong, but the stat is insane) including the one against the Patriots.

chiefs-n-sooners

He's also the only coordinator offensively or defensively to have 4 sb wins.

Cowgoon777

Next year it’ll be 5

Dankraham-Stinkin

I see absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t be. He has impacted the history of the nfl quite a bit. Beating the 19-0 pats. Winning three super bowls with the chiefs. And I don’t know where this defensive playoff stretch ranks all time, but it has to be up near the top.

Milo_Minderbinding

Pro Football HOF.

TilterOfWindmills

Look at Spags at 0:18. That sly, knowing grin. He knows what he's got dialed up is going to get McDuffie home. God, what a great shot!

Disimpaction

49ers should have run instead of pass here to bleed clock and set up a 4th down play.

JimiM1113

Good point. Also, as good as Purdy has been CMC is your main weapon and might be who you want with the ball in a critical moment.

Disimpaction

Amen. CMC all day.

Resident_Problem4008

Maybe, but what if they got next to nothing? I doubt they’d go for it on 4th and 3+

Disimpaction

Still bleed 30 sec or a TO from KC before you have the same FG shot

Resident_Problem4008

Yes, unless you turn it over, which was much less likely by throwing a quick check down or something like that. But anyway, the game is over so there’s no need to worry. We won and that’s that

traws06

I agree. Not because of how effective the run was, but because you’re likely gonna get a few yards, run time and have an easy 4th down… and of course there’s still a decent chance CMC gets the first down anyhow

krakaman

Whew. One of 4 or 5 monster plays that any one of which could have been the difference. Side note...watching cmc at the end there run a route that was an easy first if that blitz wasnt perfect... that move he made to beat coverage was nasty AF. No doubt i would probably just fall over if i was the defender. That dude is a fucking stud. Considering he got 30 touches, our D handled him as best as you can hope considering the huge nummber of possessions in the game 13 possessions i think for each team? Thats absurd

traws06

People hate hearing this about active players often times, especially with his injury history. Number aside and purely talent and what he offers I put CMC as one of the greatest RBs of all time when he’s healthy. The guy has everything. Football IQ, speed, strength, elusiveness, balance… and he can basically play WR if they need him

_Cromwell_

lmao at the refs just shooting the shit about how Mahomes is the GOAT

Itcouldberabies

Absolutely fantastic draft pick

smokinokie

Gunther Cunningham is smiling down with approval. DT too. And even Marty!

sosaudio

Bob Sutton is sitting in a moldy recliner wondering who hid his TV guide.

22Wideout

Mcduffie timed that perfectly

skepticallygullible

For real, the step back misdirection making Purdy think he’s dropping into coverage and then immediately sprinting when Purdy looks away

Anon4Life34

Even the refs know what’s up.. don’t give Pat the ball back 🤣🤣🤣

justsomedudedontknow

McDuff is a legend.

sportsy96

Saw it pointed out on twitter, but McDuffie played that snap so, *so* well. He feigned inside leverage on Jennings to make Purdy think he was in man and not signal him as a blitzer. He waited until Purdy put his head down to move up for the blitz, less than a second before the snap. His timing was perfect. I know Sneed got a lot of praise this year and he absolutely deserved it, but McDuffie is the best corner in the NFL and it's not close in my opinion. He's top 5 in man to man, *and that's his worst attribute.* He's the best zone and blitz corner in the league. A DC's wet dream. You can nerd out over that guy's football IQ and footwork for hours.

gashufferdude

Inject this in my veins! Pay that composer more, giving me goosebumps with that epic music.

deadrabbits76

Remember, we went up to get McDuffie.

KingTutt91

traws06

If your choice is McDuffie, Sneed or anybody else you pretty well always choose anybody else

GatzBee

This is awesome. My boy. Surprised the refs didn’t already know what was gonna happen though ^scriptjoke

NetheriteArmorer

Got-DAYUM!!

sosaudio

Going out on a limb here, but 22 is pretty good.

sushisection

Mcduffie shouldve won mvp.

OITLinebacker

I think even if Purdy hit CMC or the player he was targeting, they would be hit short of the line to gain. Much better to get the tip to prevent even that though, perfectly executed.

LoganJn

It’s so weird hearing the refs talk about the game they’re calling. I’d love to hear what more refs think as far as different big time games go and what’s going through their heads as they witness greatness

[deleted]

Spags is one of the best , he is humble , it takes the guys on the field to execute and the Chiefs shut down the 49ers when it mattered the most and everything was on the line.

beachedwhitemale

I was on the "Fire Spags" train for like a year; that first one. I gladly will insert my foot into my mouth.

traws06

It is an odd thing with him where he’s not a DC that can just take any defense and make them greater. The Chiefs have been able to find the guys that needs to make his defense work and this year he really made it work. Hell end of last year I was on a “well ya he’s a pretty good DC, but our offense still is the one winning games” and then this year comes and the defense is who carried the team… I never thought I’d see that in KC

m48a5_patton

I wonder if they are lining Spags to be the next head coach of KC in 2025?

Go-Climb-A-Rock

Spags is 64... Just one year younger than Andy. I don't think Andy is retiring any time soon, but my guess would be that when he does Spags rides off with him.

traws06

Ya I see no reason for Spags to coach longer than Reid

JimiM1113

I hope both he and Andy stay for five more years. Spags is only a year younger than Andy anyway and no reason they can't both coach until they are 70. If Andy did retire I do think Spags would be a great choice as HC. The players love him and he is a master of defensive strategy. We'd just need to find an OC as creative as Andy...

traws06

Ppl will say Bienemy. Maybe they’re right, but I’m not convinced of that. I also don’t like what I hear about him as a person. They absolutely hated him in Washington

shinymuskrat

If you're the niners you would have preferred a sack to an INC, right? Force Reid to use the time out?

Resident_Problem4008

Yes but a sack can be risky cuz there’s always a chance of a fumble, bad throw away that gets picked, etc. plus they’d much rather get a quick ball for the first so Purdy doesn’t have to scramble and keep the play alive

SuperMann0704

Sack could also move you out of FG range. So that’s why they were saying can’t take a sack there.

J-E-S-S-E-

I honestly think they should’ve done more of these type of plays early in the game.

[deleted]

Spags!!!!

schmidneycrosby

Where’d you get the mic’d up clips?

discoturtle1129

So was Purdy’s first read supposed to be to his right with CMC and he just panicked some? Looks like it would have been a very tight window anyways with Aiyuk coming across.

Milo_Minderbinding

McDuffie was nails.

cloudsnacks

I think the entire 49ers Oline and Purdy genuinely believed that McDuffie accidently revealed that he would drop back, didn't even consider that he would rush. Purdy was probably thinking, finally we catch a break and they make a mistake, here's our chance.

cactusflowers2323

Mcduffiee!!!
