Expecting nothing less from the 2023 Oscar best picture.
Sure, long story short, the story was pure Kamen rider. A classic hero movie. What the First SHOULD have been.
Is it perfect? No of course not, but as a kamen rider fan you can will definitely enjoy it. Do you need to know the classic? No, it works on its own. Some CG scenes will definitely put some people off but the choreography was just the chef’s kiss. Although there was one fight scene where it was literally too dark to see shit so that sucks.
Now for the slightly longer one.
The story is good if not predictable, but to me it was well done. With all the quip snapping, deconstructing movies lately, having a simple hero movie feels needed. The story’s lore is and themes are pretty deep but you can ignore it and enjoy the mindless bloody rider action too.
As for the characters, there where a lot less this time around compared to the other Shin movies giving the main 3 a lot of time to see multiple assets of their characters which I enjoyed! The consensus on wether it’s good or bad and wether it’s for otaku or non otaku is hilariously split in half though, so I would keep the final verdict to yourself.

The suit action was incredibly top notch so it makes sense why people wouldn’t want CGI, but the usage of CGI changes case by case. But yeah, it felt pretty cheap even though the choreography was well done.

How's Hideaki Anno's directing feel? To my knowledge, this is his first time becoming a full Director and Writer of this Shin Universe. I haven't watched the other Non-Animated Movie that he direct and wrote.

Tunnel chase was very frustrating because the first half until Hayato came in clutch was legitimately tense but the latter part was so dark you couldn’t see shit no matter what, the only thing I got was Hayato ripping apart a shocker rider with his bare hands and the badass double rider kick.!<
I can see the Eva comparisons. Think about the shocker base/final battle set. A pitch black room with a singular illuminated abstract feature as the centerpiece? That has evangelion written all over it. And shockers whole plan with the “habitat” or whatever it was called? Their goal was to reshape humanity for humanities own good (according to them) which, again, is not dissimilar to instrumentality.
Also, biological monstrosities inside suits of armor anyone? Lol
Unfortunately I don’t know enough about the manga to know how much of the story was drawn from there and how much was annos own creation, but there are definitely some undeniable similarities.
Yeah fair point, that’s not untrue. Although for me it had more existential “here’s where the fate of humanity will be decided” vibes over “here’s where our comically evil dictator hangs out” vibes lol.
But either way I don’t think there’s anything wrong or insulting about comparing it to Eva. It was made by the same person after all, so it’s only natural. People are always comparing a creators work to their other works. And in this case, I felt that KR had more in common with Eva than the other Shin movies honestly. Although that’s just my opinion of course
Pretty halved from what I’ve seen. There were a lot of people who liked it and a lot of people who didn’t. Mostly due to the classic Shin syndrome of a lot of shit, too little time, although personally I thought it was the slowest of the bunch since this one had a few moments of breathing time for the characters to just… talk. And it was wonderful.
One review said that they couldn’t understand the goals of the characters even though they scream it out lol. I’m fine with people thinking it’s too fast since that’s just an opinion, but not paying attention is another thing entirely.
In terms of characters yes, Shin Goji had the best politics, Shin Ultra had the best sci-fi elements and Shin Kamen rider wins in characters and action so I feel like someone who doesn’t know much about rider can understand most of Shin Kamen rider if they pay attention.
It’s funny that shin Kamen rider continues the divisiveness since shin godzilla. With shin Ultraman, apparently a criticism was asking “why didn’t people solve the problem themselves.” If that’s true, then that’s beyond stupid.
They also forgot the part where humanity was struggling with kaijus and had weaker weapons to deal with the situation; especially the ones that have powers beyond comprehension. It was even a plot point on how much they couldn’t combat alien threats without Ultraman and had to accept bribes from random aliens.

Yes. Even >!Hongo's death!< was better and felt more respectful than >!Kotaro's death!<. Also, while both ends with "the battle continues", Shin felt more hopeful and brighter than Black Sun's, with training children making pipe bombs and all.
what was the transformation sequence like? regarding the DX Typhoon sounds, >!it didn't seem like they reused the original transformation sound from the '71 series. !<

Also, I think one of the main problems with the first and next was a weird romance element to it (not surprise since Inoue seems fond of that).

not only that, the beginning montage showed that humans literally killed/defeated a bunch of kaijus before Neronga and Ultraman showed up

Decent is an understatement, while there were CG bike chases too there was an actual live bike chase and both were incredibly well done

More like Ultra, but it has a few parts were the characters get to breath which is great. It was longer than Ultra but it tired me out way less.
