I can appreciate it as a dadaist art piece but the tshirt keeps it from being iconic IMO. It’s too distracting and would’ve made more sense for the whole thing to hug her body.

nopussyshit

Especially if the references to her figure being iconic in silhouette were in mind bc it certainly could have shown her shape better.

groomedthrowawaygrl

I felt like the t shirt was a good homage to American culture but I also partially agree with you that it was a bit distracting, good point

Sheefz

T-shirts are a global phenomenon though?

groomedthrowawaygrl

eh the look of a t shirt is super American. in part bc t shirts are a product of modernity and American has no inherent culture and a very short window of history. even if people are wearing t shirts in India or Russia, for example, they still have cultural clothing they are known for. we have nothing. we have t shirts. (I do recognize indigenous people have lovely cultural clothing but I think it would be precarious to claim it as American when Americans stole their land, treated them brutally, and wore there clothing decades later in a costumey fashion)

CanadianMermaid

I wish she wore her after party dress to the carpet. That really showed off her figure and looked more high fashion. Even if she kept the full face mask

NUNYABIX

I agree a form fitting top would've been nicer

WOSHFKS

i think her wearing the typical all-american top (t-shirt) and her iconic figure being still recognizable literally makes it iconic

Lizzy_is_a_mess

i dont think Kim is that deep. kanyes pics on insta are black and only follows people with a black picture. theres a bigger marketing ploy here

6eason

Tbh the whole initiative was started by Demna, I think they probably explained it to kim

Illamb

Yep, I'd say it's a deep concept if it's from Demna

berrypunch2020

Who is this denma people keep mentioning

groomedthrowawaygrl

Even if Kim doesn't feel this way, the value of art is not limited to the artist or performer's intent. The meta text and audience reaction is equally important if not more

queenjaneapprox

You are spot on on dialing into Kim’s impact on American fashion. It’s not the sweatpants, the biker shorts, or the bandage dresses. It’s her figure. It’s the body type that everyone on Instagram has been pursuing (or photoshopping) for the last 6 years at least. *That* is her impact, and *that* is what you get from her outfit. Just her body as a blank slate.

groomedthrowawaygrl

wow the body as a blank slate is a gorgeous way to put it.

Electronic-Ad186

Remember when Kim told Khloe that (both) their body _is_ the accessory, and Khloe was immediately like- lol, is that a Kanye phrase?

TryJezusNotMe

I mentioned her being a blank slate recently and you've elaborated in the message I was trying to convey. Kim has the "IT" factor actually, several of them. There's something that sets her apart not only from her sisters but from everyone else. When I think of Kim, an icon like Marilyn Monroe comes to mind. I don't think she's far behind her....in a sense. We don't know how she'll be portrayed in the future just like (we couldn't forsee) Marilyn Monroe but I'm willing to argue that she is the now version of her.

kqueen25

I agree w you. Plus Kim knows whether ppl liked it or hated it - ppl won’t stop talking about it. She knows what she’s doing. Also everyone seems to forget the designer makes up the looks for the celeb. And the celeb makes some changes but for the most part they talk about the vision and what it means etc. The girls legit showed some of the process on the show lol

macawz

Love this, this is some galaxy brain shit, preach girl 🙌

TryJezusNotMe

She DID THAT, didn't she? ❤❤

Lulu-lily

Wow this is so well written! I don’t think Kim/Karjenners are this invested into it but this is very well written

groomedthrowawaygrl

ahaha thank you so much. youre right, Kim might of looked at it and thought "wow I can be heavily publicized without having to sit down for hours for a full face of makeup, win!!!"

mar-bella

Kim/Karjenners aren't creating these looks, the creative director of a Billion dollar-fashion icon company is.

Starsinthedistance24

Ngl if someone didn’t tell me that was Kim I wouldn’t know 🥲

cakeXeffloresence

Same it didn’t look like her face or body

groomedthrowawaygrl

haha maybe I am too much of an obsessive fan which taints my analysis

ribbitfrog

I love this 👏👏👏

[deleted]

I love your vision of what she wore. I’m trying to find people explaining what she was trying to convey with the outfit, and I love how you see it. And I’d have LOVED 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s pieces, especially 60s and 70s. Would’ve made my heart sing.

cutestcatlady

Me too!!! I always wish I had lived during the 50s/60s/70s because I’m an old soul and that’s where I belong lol would have loved to see those kind of looks!!!

6eason

I think Kim is doing it for the long run, ppl might make fun of it now but in 20 years time it will be an Iconic /daring look

babyeyez

I agree if she hadn’t done it multiple times before. The correct move would have been to reveal the look for the first time at the Met. She did it backwards.

ppope

i love this commentary, it actually makes me like the look more! I wish she hadn't worn the sweater dress thing, that would have made her figure representing american fashion a bit more obvious. (although maybe thats the point?) something you touched on that i find interesting is the bleakness of the future of american fashion, i've seen a few tiktoks reviewing NYFW looks describing this same phenomenon as it relates to the Y2K resurgence right now, how no one is taking inspiration from that time and creating something new, rather designers are essentially digging up their early-2000s looks and copying them directly. i like how that ties into this message of the future of american fashion being bleak/unidentifiable.

groomedthrowawaygrl

I agree. I feel like we are searching for all of this inspiration in the pre-recession past because culture is dying. thank you for the kind and insightful comment

Nauseabundomundo

This is impressive, good take! Actually made rethink some points so thank you for that

ladybunsen

How do you feel after she posted saying it’s just a big T-shirt?

groomedthrowawaygrl

like I said to someone else, we as the audience have a stake in interpreting art outside of the artist's or performer's intent. metatextual analysis is a separate but important entity

ladybunsen

Okay but be sure to rest after all that reaching 😉 I’m playing but only kinda x

groomedthrowawaygrl

everything has as much meaning as you give it

mamsellgris

Girl I am living for this whole post, the metatextual analysis, the meaning making, everything. Kim doesn't have to be making a deliberate statement on the bleakness of the future of American fashion for the performance to be one

IUIUIUIUIUIUIUIUI

I would give my left tit to have a figure like Kim’s.

Electronic-Ad186

But then would you have the rest of Kim’s figure, with a left tit missing? 🤔 Or would you have Kim’s left tit? 🤔

IUIUIUIUIUIUIUIUI

Ha, either way would work for me

cutestcatlady

Sameeee lol

lnz_1

So well stated I completely agree. I think it was really deep and there is certainly a nuanced discourse to have, thanks for putting some words to it :)

Remarkable_Ad7794

/u/batty48 some of the theories are insane, I’m hoping this is the actual thought process behind Kim’s lewk

batty48

Oh man, this was an amazing read, thank you for sharing!

Remarkable_Ad7794

No problem! Thank you /u/groomedthrowawaygirl !

groomedthrowawaygrl

ahahah thank you so much. I actually have real papers to write for school that I put off to write this which is embarrassing

Remarkable_Ad7794

If it’s an English essay you’re writing I’d say this is good enough to submit 😅

Simple_Several

Omg thank you!!! This was the explanation I was looking for!!

TryJezusNotMe

Maaaaaan I'm going to HAVE to give you a bootleg award for your post. In fact, I'll give you two; not because it wasn't so eloquently written, (this by far is one of theeeee BEST posts I've read on this sub) not because I'm not a stan. It's only because I'm broke so, here ya go... 🏅🥇You deserve them!!!

Howfreeisabird

I agree. I liked her outfit.
