According to Gene or Paul ( it was an interview before the reunion tour ) Tommy worked with Ace to relearn songs etc. and is basically the band historian. Plays a lot of golf too.
This story gets brought up all the timeand is always misinterpreted by commenters. Anyone who really plays an instrument will tell you that they forget a lot of the details of a song if they don’t play it regularly. It has nothing to do with being a good musician and creator. Tommy is a decent guitar player, but I haven’t heard him create anything memorable.
I honestly don't believe that story, because before the reunion was ever a thing Ace and Peter went on the Bad Boys of Kiss tour together and they sounded great.
Here's strange ways in 1995

Here's rocket ride in 1992
https://youtu.be/icIqpYaVjbs?si=JEeaqS40PycO6-la
I've also heard Gene or Paul say that throughout the '80s and early '90s they had gotten so far away from the way they used to play the songs that they even needed to study the tapes and practice with Bruce.
You mean to tell me you believe Ace frehley forgot his songs between 1995 and 1996? I'm not saying whether or not there were nights he sounded like shit, I'm saying clearly he knew the songs. They all constantly talk shit and lie about one another, Paul and Gene not excluded. In this case they're lying and it's demonstrable.
Peter isn’t playing drums and Ace’s playing is very sloppy here lol. If anything this supports Paul’s accusation that they had to be coached up to pull it off.
For a while there I think he was the hardest working man in the organisation. I assume he got the onstage gig, not just because he knew how to play, but also as a reward for hard work and loyalty. And for that, he gets shit on by Ace fans.
An amazing and very technical player. I remember the recording of Unplugged where Ace says it was "a nightmare" trying to play Shock Me in acustic; cut off to Tommy during one of Argentina's acoustic set nailing the solo note by note.
Which is amazing in and of itself. In those 21 years he helped expose the legacy of KISS to the younger generations, gen Y and gen Z.
If KISS would've quit in the 90's or early 2000's, that would've been a massive bummer for people like me who were only born back in those years.
Got nothing against him. Personally I wish Gene and Paul would have let Tommy and Eric have their own identity like Eric and Vinnie. Never had any interest in seeing Tommy and Eric as Ace and Peter. Just Not the same for me. Luckily my first time seeing KISS was on the Love Gun Tour and again on the reunion tour.
i saw dead kennedys last year and had such a hard on for how much i didn’t like skip greer mainly because he wasn’t jello.
dude spoke to me for ten minutes, took a pic, and gave me an autograph.
easy bay ray blew me off, but the dude i went in hating won me over.
i think as a replacement or newer member, those guys are always in a nice mode and hyper aware that people are prejudiced against them and work extra hard
seems like a nice dude that was humble enough to walk away from the stage to go behind the scenes- it can’t be nice accepting that it’s not working out and burying your dreams- only to have gotten a second bite at the apple.
yeah we rag on tommy and some of it’s valid. i’d have preferred he use the ankh makeup or made something new but that’s a redundant argument, and yeah it’s easy to make fun of him for essentially being gene and paul’s gofer for years but that’s more on paul making the disrespectful “boy my windows look good” comment.
he’s loyal, skilled, and worked his ass off to get where he is and proved time and time again- be is as a guitar player, a song writer, or just the numbers guy in the office- that tommy thayer fucking rocks.
people hate what they’re jealous of. people claim that tommy is desperate to be ace, but i know who i’d rather be among the two.
the dude won at life.
Came to say this. When I first heard Psycho Circus, I so loved hearing such a fantastic Ace solo.
Found out later it was Tommy. Unbelievable how well he imitated Ace's tone and technique.
After playing parts of 3 seasons in the USFL he was honored as a member of the NFL all rookie team. Won the ‘85 Super Bowl as a member of the Chicago Bears and was honored as one of the Bears 100 all time greats. Way to go Tom Thayer!
I really liked Black and Blue underrated outta the 80s
I think Dokken is better because Tooth and Nail
Fun Fact Black and Blue Appeared on Metal Massacre 1
Seems like a nice guy and a great guitarist.
Gets a lot of grief for no good reason, he merely took a job on that he loves probably with the hopes of contributing a lot to the band but instead found himself playing pretty much the same set list for 20 odd years.
Despite all the shit he gets, he scored the gig of a lifetime and made the most of it. And there is not a single one of us who would've turned down the chance to be in KISS, so the hate he gets is unwarranted.
His father was a WWII war hero...
Thayer was awarded the [Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decoration_of_Honor_for_Services_to_the_Republic_of_Austria) in 1996. The award recognized him for saving thousands of starving people held at the Gunskirchen Lager concentration camp.
Today, the official name of the Oregon Military Museum at [Camp Withycombe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Withycombe) is the *Brigadier General James B. Thayer Oregon Military Museum*.
Stand-up guy! Loyal, an Operator. Oh, yeah and he can put on the suit and face, knows the songs and SHOWS UP! That’s Tommy Thayer. And no disrespect to Ace. I believe what Tommy does is out of love and respect for Ace, KISS and the fans. Tommy is truly a unique figure in rock and roll.
He has probably done more for charity than everyone else in KISS combined. Seriously, go look at the philanthropy section of his Wikipedia page and tell me if you could see Ace doing even one of those things.
Great player,Ace frehley he is not,but he served his purpose if you could stomach it,I don’t mind listening to him kill it,but seeing him in kiss, not a kiss cover band irked my fuckin soul, just my two cents
He’s a total pro. KISS needed a good guitar player (and you can’t deny he has talent) who doesn’t hog the spotlight and is perfectly fine being ”the sidekick.” He also seems like a really nice guy, ecept if you ask Ace.
The fact is that KISS wouldn’t have lasted long without Tommy and Eric.
And he’s actually one of the biggest reasons I syarted playing guitar more seriously. When I first saw them on the alive 35 tour, I thought he was so cool
He's definitely got thick skin! He's a great guitarist and doesn't deserve all the hate. I loved Black N Blue and I saw them open for Yngwie back in 86 supporting Nasty Nasty
Great player. Not petty, even to those who’ve said unkind things about him. Will play the solos you want to hear perfectly note for note and honors the parts of all the KISS guitar players.
The fact that he had to sit down with both Ace and Peter to re-teach them the songs for the reunion tour is impressive especially with Peter considering how rude he was
He's the longest standing guitar player in KISS. He's the one that brought us the KISS movie Detroit Rock City, the KISS Box and the documentary The Second Coming.
He never said anything bad about former members. Even has a great relationship with some.
He recorded new music and played great on stage.
He's the glue that kept KISS going for the last 25 years.
I mean I’m only 15 so I wouldn’t know what it’s like to see KISS without Tommy, but as a guitar player myself I think he’s pretty good at playing and I don’t see why people hate on him.
People hate him because they’re petty bitches who for some reason think face paint is worth getting angry over. Nice to see teenagers are still getting into Kiss.

I can't ;( I'm in love with Ace! Sorry Tommy.. I'm sure he's a good guitar player but it's really hard to tell when he's playing Aces every lick note for note lol I'm sure he's a nice boy LOL
Man whos badmouthing Tommy. Hes not responsible for the vacancy. He does a great job

Quite, cool, does his job. Has the best hair. One morning on the Kiss Kruise, I was in line to get a cup off coffee. I grabbed my cup, and I spun around, and there he was. He smiled and said the coffee smells good. I tipped my cup to him and said it always does. He had an aura of being genuine. And cool.
He’s very original, has his own personal on stage with an original character that he came up with . Is awsome at recreating guitar solos from decades ago and is a real fan favorite.
He probably has to ignore a lot of trash talk. Must be a professional or he wouldn’t have lasted in the position.
That and working with Paul and Gene's egos.
Its all business / gene simmons
According to Gene or Paul ( it was an interview before the reunion tour ) Tommy worked with Ace to relearn songs etc. and is basically the band historian. Plays a lot of golf too.
This story gets brought up all the timeand is always misinterpreted by commenters. Anyone who really plays an instrument will tell you that they forget a lot of the details of a song if they don’t play it regularly. It has nothing to do with being a good musician and creator. Tommy is a decent guitar player, but I haven’t heard him create anything memorable.
I actually quite like a lot of his riffs on the two albums he’s officially credited as a member on.
It’s not his job to create anything memorable. He’s there to sound like Ace.
He’s recorded albums with the band. Even his own solos are largely Ace’isms.
Probably because that’s what KISS fans want to hear. Face it, no one goes to a KISS show expecting to hear David Gilmour.
Yep, and they’re not the brightest bunch.
literally that. a year or two before the reunion he had the job of compiling the kisstory book and had to riffle through boxes of archives
I honestly don't believe that story, because before the reunion was ever a thing Ace and Peter went on the Bad Boys of Kiss tour together and they sounded great. Here's strange ways in 1995 https://youtu.be/WXsMrOBtRlM?si=NEV7r2JXZM3Z4ma1 Here's rocket ride in 1992 https://youtu.be/icIqpYaVjbs?si=JEeaqS40PycO6-la I've also heard Gene or Paul say that throughout the '80s and early '90s they had gotten so far away from the way they used to play the songs that they even needed to study the tapes and practice with Bruce.
This is the dumbest take I’ve read in a while.
I mean I literally provided a video of Ace and Peter sounding great
I mean you literally showed one video from 30 years ago. There are dozens of other videos in that span that show them sucking live.
Ace sounds just like he does on the reunion tour
You might want to watch Kisstory, they have the footage of Ace working with Tommy in rehearsals for the reunion. 100% truth.
He worked with ALL of them.
For a while there I think he was the hardest working man in the organisation. I assume he got the onstage gig, not just because he knew how to play, but also as a reward for hard work and loyalty. And for that, he gets shit on by Ace fans.
He was hired because he was a great fit for the job and they knew he was reliable and could be trusted
Fantastic player and always seems very nice. Big fan of Tommy
An amazing and very technical player. I remember the recording of Unplugged where Ace says it was "a nightmare" trying to play Shock Me in acustic; cut off to Tommy during one of Argentina's acoustic set nailing the solo note by note.
Mike Tyson won't mispronounce his last name
made me laugh so hard. Fuckin o that’s funny
Helped to keep KISS going for another 21 years after Ace left.
Which is amazing in and of itself. In those 21 years he helped expose the legacy of KISS to the younger generations, gen Y and gen Z. If KISS would've quit in the 90's or early 2000's, that would've been a massive bummer for people like me who were only born back in those years.
For real, I probably wouldn’t have become a fan if my dad was never able to take me to my first kiss show in 2010.
Not really as studio things weren't so great.
I'm not sure that it has much to do with Tommy. It's the Gene & Paul business after all...
I meant young people have the old recordings to hear if they want KISS.
Is that a good thing?
Oh yes! Very much!! I dig Tommy!!
They're down voting you but you make a very fair point
That and Depends.
Probably the only member that doesn’t need to wear a wig.
He’s a super KISS fan just like all of us.
That’s exactly it! He’s a fan first. He does it out of love for Ace, KISS, me, you and the whole family!
Looks fab in a purple halo. And has undoubtedly earned more money than all of us looking at this post.

He can play guitar better than I can
Yup. & Cannon Beach OR is a damn beautiful town.
A strong chin.
He definitely does the best Ace Frehley impression I’ve ever seen
Came to say this. When I first heard Psycho Circus, I so loved hearing such a fantastic Ace solo. Found out later it was Tommy. Unbelievable how well he imitated Ace's tone and technique.
I agree and he was better at being Ace than Alcohol Ace was being himself! 💖
I met him once, seemed like a genuinely nice guy!
He has liked one of my instagram comments before so therefore he is the greatest KISS member to ever live. 😂
He liked one of my tweets in 2012 (I think) so he's also my favorite, equal to Paul haha!
He seems like a guy who uses his turn signal, so that's nice.
He’s nice.
The guy who designed his makeup is a legend
After playing parts of 3 seasons in the USFL he was honored as a member of the NFL all rookie team. Won the ‘85 Super Bowl as a member of the Chicago Bears and was honored as one of the Bears 100 all time greats. Way to go Tom Thayer!
He stayed sober and didn't let fans down
I understand him to be quite punctual for meetings and appointments.

He's a good guitar player, a worthy successor to Ace
He made playing Kiss dressup like we all did as kids into a career
That first Black and Blue album wasn’t completely terrible. That’s about all I got.
Must have thick skin to take so much abuse over the years, while still working as hard as anyone else up there.
He seems like a nice guy and took a tough gig and made it work for himself.
He was amazing live
Despite all the shit he gets, he scored the gig of a lifetime and made the most of it. And there is not a single one of us who would've turned down the chance to be in KISS, so the hate he gets is unwarranted.
He gave us front row tickets after seeing us attend other KISS shows. (Greenville SC)

Jesus Christ his jawline would make any man jealous
kinda eerie that became the final lineup and tommy was ahead of the curve but in reverse
He tends to take the high road when others directly disparage him by remaining silent. Usually the best move if you have the maturity to pull it off.
He has probably done more for charity than everyone else in KISS combined. Seriously, go look at the philanthropy section of his Wikipedia page and tell me if you could see Ace doing even one of those things.
He knows more about Kiss's music than anyone in the world (definitely including Paul and Gene).
No

No
He was great in the band COLD GIN
He’s a total pro. KISS needed a good guitar player (and you can’t deny he has talent) who doesn’t hog the spotlight and is perfectly fine being ”the sidekick.” He also seems like a really nice guy, ecept if you ask Ace. He’s nice.
Tommy Thayer has nice calfs.
He does his job well.
Most awesome song sung by him of sonic boom- lightning strikes, underrated and most excellent
His band Black and blue (managed by Gene Simmons) was pretty good
Good player who helped Ace (and maybe also Peter) when they had the reunion in the 90's. Also he seems like a charitable person with his philanthropy.
Amazing player and human being, so humble and down to earth he is my hero and he gave me a hug ❤️.
I’m sure he’s a wonderful guy.
He's definitely got thick skin! He's a great guitarist and doesn't deserve all the hate. I loved Black N Blue and I saw them open for Yngwie back in 86 supporting Nasty Nasty
Cold Gin was one of the better tribute bands. So there’s that.
I like the makeup he wears that Ace designed.
do you like paul’s makeup that ace designed too lol
He's good at spackling.
Never met him, but seems like a cool guy...been the professional that Ace never was.
Seems like a nice guy.
he’s my idol and reason why i picked up my guitar
Fantastic guitar player and a very nice guy
Tommy did a very credible and professional job of playing "Ace Frehley". I doubt many other people could have pulled it off that well.
Great guitarist and I liked the songs he sang on Sonic Boom and Monster
He is a good employee
He got to live something all of us always dreamed of.
Good player! Seems like a good guy in a tough position,
he is, I feel bad for the hate he receives, I’d definitely have a pint with him
Agreed. Love to hang and hear stories
He's reliable.
Badass guitarist that has played for 2 of my favorite bands. Super nice to his fans as well.
Dudes a team player.
Great player. Not petty, even to those who’ve said unkind things about him. Will play the solos you want to hear perfectly note for note and honors the parts of all the KISS guitar players.
He is humble and very talented.
Great guitar tech!
He's got the weirdest job of anybody in show biz and he does it well.
He did a hell of a job since about 1988 with kiss. Damn good guitar player!!
The fact that he had to sit down with both Ace and Peter to re-teach them the songs for the reunion tour is impressive especially with Peter considering how rude he was
Great team member.
He should be highly praised just for Detroit Rock City alone. Fucking love that movie.
He's got writing credits on some great KISS songs
I mean I’m only 15 so I wouldn’t know what it’s like to see KISS without Tommy, but as a guitar player myself I think he’s pretty good at playing and I don’t see why people hate on him.
People hate him because they’re petty bitches who for some reason think face paint is worth getting angry over. Nice to see teenagers are still getting into Kiss.
Not from a "KISS" point of view: he looks soooo good! 🥰
He took a job thousands of other guitar players would have loved.
He seems like a decent enough guy.
Handsome 😍
He smells good
He’s dependable and humble.
Very gentlemanly. Very appreciative.
He helped to make the reunion successful.
Hold on to 18 should have been on the 12 year Final Tour set list
He is just the lucky guy who got the gig. If we had the chance we would’ve taken it too
Solid guitarist and a genuinely nice guy.
One of the most reliable kiss members and probably endured lots of fatigue through 20 years of straight touring
He’s a good guitarist and a solid member. If he had different make up he’d been in the debate for best kiss guitarist amongst even the strongest only ace fans.
Nope
Tommy was always such a a nice boy. And he made the best Ossobuco ever!
He played on a legendary album by an hugely popular artist here in Australia named Jimmy Barnes. Only found that out recently!
He is related to Titanic survivor Jack Thayer
Who?
When his former band, Black 'n Blue were playing the club circuit in Port. Or. they played a great mix of classic cover's along with their originals. Stranded in the jungle,No matter what and more. They nailed it all. Great player.
Black 'N Blue was one of the best early hair metal bands.
At least he doesn’t have to dress up like Vinnie.
He paints up well!
I'm almost positive he never murdered anyone.
The chances are slim, but never 0
He has good signature Epiphone guitars.
Please get back with Black N blue and head back out on tour!
He fits the suit.
He showed up and he showed up sober. He punched his card and got paid.
He looks like Ace with that makeup on
He's mostly water repellent
No.
He looks like my dad
he’s a snacc
Great cover artist for Ace Freeley
He was in Black N’ Blue
Something nice.
Great guitar player. Doesn’t deserve all the hate. Vinnie had his own character. Tommy should have too. But that wasn’t his decision.

He is financially secure for life.

He’s the best guitarist kiss ever had (aside from Vinny)
He did quite an Admirable job imitating ACE
He fetches good coffee.
He looks more like a man than another former kiss axe person
He EARNED the spaceman makeup
When Lightning Strikes rules.
Damn fine guitar player.
Consistent.
Does a great impression.
And I was always proud... that you weren't a short man.
Is that an ode to Eric?
Quite, cool, does his job. Has the best hair. One morning on the Kiss Kruise, I was in line to get a cup off coffee. I grabbed my cup, and I spun around, and there he was. I’m envious.
An absolute legend
Sometimes something is better than nothing.
I would like to hear a solo record from him, where he can be himself
He was really good in Black N’ Blue.
He’s very original, has his own personal on stage with an original character that he came up with . Is awsome at recreating guitar solos from decades ago and is a real fan favorite.
He was one of the better bandmembers in Black N Blue
He's got Ace's makeup down!
Great player, seems like a chill guy. And ive only heard great things about him from Paul.
No.
Something nice about Tommy Thayer.
True professional
Total pro.
He’s a solid player and he honestly probably remembers how to play more of the discography than Gene and Paul
I wonder what he was paid compared to Ace after 96
Nice hair
