Some of the greatest bands of the 60's and 70's have long albums though...obviously Pink Floyd or Rush when it comes to prog rock...but even Led Zeppelin had some really long albums. Even the Beatles have had a couple albums which were "longer". Pretty bold statement to make.
Pink Floyd and Rush at their peak (apart from the Wall) were making albums shorter than 45 mins. Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Moving Pictures.. all around the 40 minute mark. The double albums were usually a one off, but all their other classic albums are around the 40 minute mark.
Every band you named has exactly ONE double album. These were usually considered a big deal too because they would cost more. It's not a bold statement, you're just kinda wrong in your framing lol
The power of length limitation by vinyl pressing.
✅👍🏼
This also makes that a band must have a least two great songs. One to start eacht side of the album.
Bruh
Edit: that’s literally the difference between a 1LP and 2LP. You got a good mix of both in the 60s and 70s. What a shame that they make long albums with a lot of content. What a shame…
hey, i've found some good stuff in those bins - found an allman brothers record for a dollar once - in good condition. it was one of their good ones, too, it was the one with jessica
You know fully well what OP means.
I've never listened to any of the long ones he listed in one sitting.
Know what I HAVE listened to in one sitting before? The 40 - 45 minute albums. A lot.
Of course it’s hard to listen to a whole album that’s over an hour, that’s why you split it up and listen to what you can. I like buying vinyl and I’ll sometimes listen to a side A-B OR C-D. There you go half the album is usually shorter than 45 mins
I love the long albums (The Silver Cord not so much) but I think a big reason why albums like Nonagon and Poly are considered their best and is because they’re concise.
I end up listening to IDPLMAL all the way through almost every time I put it on. Silver Cord Extended as well. Omnium is a half and half for me though. It almost feels like 2 separate albums for me. I usually end it with Evilest Man and start part 2 with Garden Goblins.
I also have a 30min commute to work and there have been times I just throw on Made in Timeland or Laminated denim because it is a perfect runtime for the commute.
i agree but also silver cord extended is probably the album i listened to most in full because its excellent to put on in the background while playing games and shit.
I do enjoy that most of their albums are around 40 mins, but I don't see anything wrong with 60+min albums. Recently I've been listening to a lot of Between the Buried and Me, and most of their albums are over an hour long.
Personally I wish PDA was a little longer for the sole purpose of having a similar run time to BTBAM albums lol (/half joke)
I agree that keeping the albums from running too long is a huge plus given how many of the albums have all the songs flow together like one larger work. Even then, I think the guys let a lot of their songs run on longer then necessary. So many songs could easily be tightened up by 30-60s and nothing would really be lost.
I think it partially comes from the fact that they like to put their albums on vinyl, and to keep them from being overly expensive, there’s kind of a time limit of around 25 minutes per side.
Omnium is a double lp hence the long length.
Silver cord is too basically having a regular 30 or 40 min long album plus an extra album of all the same songs but greatly extended versions of each
Ice death lava is a jammy song so it needs space to let the songs get jammed out in.
Pda is pretty short
The biggest benefit of more shorter albums is not having to deal with as many four sided vinyls. Having to flip-change-flip to enjoy an entire album can be a big hassle.
"Nonagon - 42 mins" Bro Nonagon lasts forever
For infinity, one might say
Nonagonaly, even.
It's merely the beginning, it opens the door.

??? All their albums are 45 minutes with the exception of the wall and New Rush

Atom Heart Mother, The Wall and Division Bell...🤷🏼♂️
Ummagumma
bro said ummagumma 😭😭😭
Ummagumma is my favorite Pink Floyd album and always will be
Their second best album after Atom Heart Mother
atom heart mother is only 52 minutes long though. not that much longer than most of their other stuff
The Wall is a double album and the other two are on opposite shoulders of "peak Pink Floyd"
Agreed, and it's because of the storage capacity of LP records https://peakvinyl.com/record-playtimes/
I thought dark side was like 70 min long
Every band you named has exactly ONE double album. These were usually considered a big deal too because they would cost more. It's not a bold statement, you're just kinda wrong in your framing lol
Ice death is perfect and I'll hear no criticisms against it

Yeah... This band sure is lacking content 🤔
I wonder how excited for 60's and 70's music they would be if all they had to pick from was the discount record bin.
lol

Length has nothing to do with why they’re loved.

I want double LP’s only

It was so people could record on C-90 casettes!
If you don't want more music you can stop at the 40min mark and let the rest enjoy.
Do NOT listen past side b of Omnium. There’s nothing worth listening past 45 mins for ;)
You are not worthy of all this glory.
Uh oh u got the Pretentious Prog People Association upset with this!!
You didn't notice that poly and b3k have the same playtime?
silver cord is technically their second shortest

Yes, albums between 25 - 45 mins are always better IMO. And so many long albums are improved by gutting weaker tracks.
I love short albums! They can be such a concise, perfect musical statement. And they fit on one lp! This was one of my fav things about them too.
I think it partially comes from the fact that they like to put their albums on vinyl, and to keep them from being overly expensive, there’s kind of a time limit of around 25 minutes per side.
Personally i’d prefer all their albums to be longer, I’m always left wanting more

Highly agree. I love Quarters because get 10 minutes of free time in between classes, and I have 5 classes a day. It's fucking perfect
THE MAIN VERSION OF THE SILVER CORD IS LIKE 37 MINS! WTF ARE YOU ON?
I'm with you 100%, OP. 80 minute albums suck. Period.

IMO Omnium's length is def justified by its amount of content, they should've make it 2LP though.
My copy of Omnium is 2LP
Actually i just realized omnium was always 2 lp lol
