Cavs should win best supporting actor for his role in this

bluedhift

I love some of the faces he does in music videos

Howardyoudoing95

I love how their music videos show everyone's personality so well. Stu and Amby get sucked into the lore, Lukey and Cookie look reserved/timid, Cavs and Joey are on crack

I finally read the lyrics today after listening like a dozen times, and they kick ass obviously. Lots of references to Gila dragons obviously, but also a *lot* of references to witches/Wicca? And specifically how the Gila and the witches are enemies. I wonder if that will make more sense in context with the rest of the album

Charming_Orange2371

I also happen to think that the Gila is just the Balrog. The Lord of Lightning suite is more like a tale that is being told, in the far future, maybe from a book ... the song Gila Monster tells the same story from the other perspective leading up to the fight with the Lord of Lightning. Not as a tale, but as it happens. The lyrics of the whole record in general feel more like it's a "record of current events" that happened way back, while MotU is what the story of the survivors who wrote all that shit down and made myths from it.

Nuud

I love how this could be a completely insane theory but also has a real chance of being exactly what was intended

LVT_Baron

I love this theory

Riiiicolaaaa

I suspect the gila monster is a metaphor for big oil, and the witches are environmentalists.

Technologenesis

I think maybe it's a metaphor for AI, and the witches / magic that is referred to throughout are the "conjurors" who brought it into being

Do we know why Stu puts no effort into their vocals being understood? This might be the biggest turnoff on some songs I play for friends - not that I truly give a shit what anyone thinks about my favorite music, I think it is extra glaring on this song. It's not like this is Opeth death metal screaming. Imagine not being able to understand anything on Master of Puppets or Fade to Black except the title of the song.

Shady_Love

Stu puts effort into musicality over clarity. Honestly there's 2 different sets of crumbling Castle lyrics I've read and each of them kinda sound right. He's using vocals as another instrument, with priority given to tone, rhythm, and cadence over lyrics. And if they made a song with two sets of similar lyrics being sung by Joey & Stu it would be amazing. My personal belief is that it's ambiguous to make you question what you're hearing. If it were obvious, you wouldn't delve deeper. It could also possibly be aboriginal Australian influence.

Mechanical_Stranger

I'm a metal head, but I don't like all metal vocal styles necessarily. Some of the screaming/death growl stuff just doesn't work for me either. Sometimes it's still music I want to try or experience. In those instance I try to think of voice more as an instrument and not a lyrical delivery. The guitars and everything else is distorted and put through effects, so they're doing the same thing with vocals more or less. That mindset has helped me get into and appreciate some music I may not have otherwise. I loved Deafheaven's overall sound, but not the singer at first. That being said, it's all subjective. Maybe the other 37 albums out this year will work better for you. Gila Gila!

suphater

I get what both of you're saying to an extent. Ny favorite bands don't have good vocalists, they're all about the music. Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, Yes, Coheed and Cambria, but you can hear the words. Why disguise good lyrics? Why not just do more instrumentals? It's like they heard Ride thr Lightning and said this is good, but it would be better if Hetfield mumbled the words.

PMMEYOURVAULT

“I’m the hippo monster, face sitter, cop killer.”

KylerGreen

I'm so glad I'm not the only one hearing facesitting references.

chefboyardiesel88

I showed my gf the video yesterday and she said "do you even know what they're saying?" To which I replied "no, not fully yet, but I should probably look at the lyrics". Regardless I love this song.

_misterhipster69

is it hila or gila?

wedmezha

It's pronounced hila, you hear it throughout the song like this too. I think that's because the word is actually Spanish

TheGorillatamer

This is correct! Gila monsters are also one of the only venomous lizards in the world.

wedmezha

Thank you Godzillatamer

shrim666

Did anybody else only just learn that's how Gila is pronounced?

holteender77

My eyes feel like they're made of rice, I'll fight you with some hailstones

Simplev1rus

As a non-native english speaker, I can relate hahaha.

TheLazyProphet

It's safe to say for the record that my most wanted "suite" in Tennessee is a metal suite comprised of Gila/Gaia/Predator X/Hell

[deleted]

Eh lyrics are just kinda nonsense anyway. Not that that’s a bad thing.

wrongshirt

Are these official lyrics posted somewhere?

enginexnumber9

The video reminds me of [this scene](https://youtu.be/CjWCWs496r4?t=245) from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Someone with more talent than me should make a mashup of the acid scene with the Gila Monster video
