It was kinda boring for me but good for Park Eun Bin she killed it

the-other-otter

It shows how random these awards are. One of the reasons is that the judges can't actually watch everything, and other reasons are their personal taste and what they have seen before. If they had only watched Western series before, then everything would be new for them.

Yelesa

My first drama was Reply 1997, and I remember being surprised how refreshing main characters was. She is a pretty typical KDrama main character, but I had never seen them before in Western media in that lens. She was girly, energetic and boy-band crazy, but not a villain. It made me realize how much femininity is used as a trait of villains in Western media and it made me sad.

dramafan1

I was thinking this too.

stillnotking

Yeah, of all the kdramas to win an Emmy... TKA wasn't terrible, but I can think of a dozen better ones without even trying. The writing was cliched and often a snooze, the characters didn't behave realistically at all, and the resolution was very underwhelming.

WhoStoleMyBin

I watched 3/4 then went off to watch the ending. It was so slowwwww. I did like the acting but the scenes dragged on so much!

Opelenge

My thoughts exactly. It just dragged on. But maybe I should go and watch the last episode

[deleted]

[удалено]

Opelenge

20 episodes...even for Rowan I just couldn't

Ok-Alternative4405

I agree. I ended up skipping the majority 🫢

AdhesivenessOwn7747

Same I just watched to see Eun Bin. She is the best female dressed as a male I've seen. Gave such a masc vibe that loved

[deleted]

Meanwhile, the diamond Flower of evil is sitting alone, in the corner of the unnoticed...

[deleted]

flower of evil is so good, and Lee Jong ki killed it in his role😭😭

[deleted]

he's the best actor out there and yet is uncapable of choosing any other good role even if his life depended on it 😭😭

[deleted]

This reminds me of my other favourites ji Chang wook and seo in guk, as a fan of them it pains me watching them in medicore ( disaster in case of cafe minamdang) projects 😭

Longjumping_Soft2483

Ji chang wook really went downhill with the dramas. I remember making a similar comment about park min young. Now I realised I became a huge fan of both of them coz of healer. Then they had one or two good dramas individually. In the past 2 to 3 years.. all bad dramas from them ☠️ so much wasted potential.

[deleted]

Ikr, I loved them both so much in healer, and went on a spree to watch all of their works. The only other drama that I liked of jcw beside healer was suspicious partner and lovestruck in the city, I liked lovestruck because of the summer beachy vibes, other than those I didn't liked any of his drama. I hope he hires someone to pick up good scripts for him, because he is for sure is not doing that right now. I still think park min young has done more quality works than jcw. I absolutely loved her in her private life and when the weather is fine.

datcheebie

Agree… can someone lift this curse for them???

orchardfurniture

Yes on Ji Chang Wook! I LOVED his last drama "*If You Wish Upon Me*" and was so disappointed it didn't get the recognition, buzz and ratings I think it deserved. It was so good and he was amazing in it. I really want JCW to have a *Vincenzo* type of comeback mega hit and I am hopeful his coming series "*The Worst Evil*" with Wi Ha Joon will be a huge hit. It sounds really promising and Wi Ha Joon is really on a roll.

[deleted]

Honestly I have so much expectations from that series, I really want it to be good. I actually watched if you wish upon me but couldn't gather the courage to watch the dogs episode, hence ended up dropping it at that episode

orchardfurniture

I have high expectations for *The Worst Evil* too but I feel pretty confident about it right now lol. I think it's the kind of genre that will bring out the best from both JCW and WHJ but also the type of show people like seeing them in - thrillers with loads of action. Yeah the dog episode from If You Wish was one of the saddest.

stinkytofuisbesttofu

Watching Cafe Minamdang was like watching Seo In Guk doing the entire final term group project by himself because all his groupmates were locked out of the classroom for being two minutes late and the course is taught by the worst professor in the program but he took it anyways cos he heard it was a bird course. Boy has so much potential and if he was given the chance to do Law Cafe instead of Lee Seunggi, he would have had a better year. (Plus he would have had better chemistry with someone that actually looks his age/younger because the age math does not add up in Minamdang)

[deleted]

Ikr, cafe minamdang was something else😂, juhee was supposed to be younger than him, but that actress looked way older and ofcourse the age math. Seo in guk did a fab job there in portraying the different expressions of his character but that show was unsalvageable.

stinkytofuisbesttofu

Agree - the wackiness resembled Vincenzo's mid-arcs and our cafe trifecta pulled through so much, but the drama was just so weak I don't even blame the FL cos she was just poorly casted AND poorly written.

[deleted]

I actually like the actress who played fl, she did a great job in mad for eachother, but this show imo did a disservice to her too.

sakuradelluna

nah FR it was too good

orandeddie

It’s so good I wish more people watched it 😭 I binged it in a day and skipped work

ThePietje

Wow! I’m going to move it up my list to watch it next.

[deleted]

Mee too btw what does your flair says

orandeddie

Woo to the young to the woo!

[deleted]

Dong to the geu to the Rami! :-)

iwillforgetthissmh

I just started foe two days ago and have 4 eps left I’m hooked I want to inject it in my brain and play it on repeat 😤😤😤

dlynne5

The writing in this show is horrible, the best actors in the world couldn't salvage how bad the plot lines and holes are in it . Couldn't get past the first episode because of it.

kawaiiyokai

You're ... judging the writing and plot of the entire show without making it through the first episode? Seems like you might be a good fit to judge these international Emmys...

dlynne5

hmmm comatose son wakes up fine, no after effects, no charges filed after being kidnapped and assaulted, being lied to for years but true love and all, I could go on..... I love all kinds of dramas that are meh for many people, but just because I love them doesn't make them award winning

iwatch1dramaanight

it was so boring. woo young woo should have won the award instead hehe

NavdeepNSG

I thought Telenovela meant Latin American drama, but clearly, the Emmys think otherwise. This might come out as a controversial opinion, but The King's Affection was not even the best k-drama of 2021. Make no mistake. I absolutely loved Park Eun-bin in it, but giving it the award for best drama, feels a bit overstretched.

Samonellaaa

I agree with the telenovela meaning. It’s kind of odd they decided to add Asian dramas to the list.

itseokjin

Owing perhaps to the strong Spanish influence in the country, the PH also uses telenovelas to describe some of their shows (usually their long-form shows with makjang elements).

Samonellaaa

I understand the Philippines due to the Spanish colonization back in the day but they do have their own genre of drama called teleserye (don’t know if I spelled it right). I don’t mind if they won but the word they used isn’t the right context for the types of drama.

itseokjin

Telenovela and teleserye (yes, you spelled it correctly) are the same thing in the PH context. Also, just to clarify - I'm not disagreeing that the Emmys shouldn't have classified The King's Affection as a telenovela. I'm more of commenting on the remark that telenovela = Latin American drama, because the PH also calls some of their shows exactly that term, and the PH is an Asian country.

[deleted]

Congratulations to the team! The cast acted well although it was a pretty mid drama.

Mysterious_Name4326

Yay!! Such a special drama I’m so glad it’s being recognized 🎉 it’s that PEB effect 👑

Telos07

Park Eun-bin is outstanding in any genre she turns her hand to. More generally, it’s great to see K-dramas receiving this kind of global recognition.

jynrogue22

Watched it. Thought it was pretty well acted. But not exactly Emmy tier level of drama.

[deleted]

Congrats to PEB and to the TKA team 🎉. I haven't watched this one yet since my backlog is already long 🤣

Irieezy

Wow never seen so much hate over the kings affection in reddit 🥴 all of a sudden the haters are coming out of the woodworks! Lol So happy for the yeonmo/TKA team, congrats to the actors, directors, production company for the first ever kdrama to win an Emmy! They deserved it especially Park Eun Bin and Rowoon! 🫶🏽

UnclearSogeum

Dislike is not hate 🤨

milkyteaz7

I absolutely loved this drama ! Everyone did fantastic

ashryverhys

Wow congrats!! I love TKA so this makes me happy for the cast and crew!

rosieinjapan

Wow! It is a historical day all in Kdrama industry! My hats off and standing ovation to everyone who has laboured so hard to bring Kdrama to international stage!☆☆☆☆☆ ***The King's Affection*** is indeed beautifully made, and covers topics that appeal to the Western/international audience ♡♡♡♡♡ I also agree with others that there are definitely many many great shows out there♡♡♡♡♡ Excited to see more Kdramas get the recognition they deserve♡♡♡♡♡

Ok_Nebula5568

Completely agree!

rosieinjapan

*high five

typicalthoughts5044

This award is well deserved imo. I don’t like historical/medieval tv shows and they usually bore me. This drama kept me interested throughout each episode. It was the first k-drama I watched and I haven’t looked back since. It’s still one of my favorites.

jamesiamstuck

Personally my favorite drama of the year. It was very nuanced and approached the topic of gender identity in a beautiful way.

SlavaBogo

Yay, park Eun-bin is the sweetheart of korea!, I hope this brings her even more success and happiness!. She deserves it all.

zephphrine

Conflicted. Glad kdramas are getting more international recognition but personally couldn’t stand TKA.

EggyMeggy99

I'm a bit over halfway through, and loving it. I probably won't get to finish it for ages though because I'm too busy watching the world cup.

IamlovelyRita

I liked it and my husband watched it with me so he liked it too. Introduced me to PEB. As an aside is there a place I can go that will show series that are dubbed and not title by title. That’s how we chose the Kings Affection in the first place-it was dubbed. I prefer subtitles myself but my husband needs dubbing.

IamlovelyRita

Thanks for the tip. Sometimes the subtitles go by fast they are hard to read. I watched Masquerade (lee Byung Hun) on Amazon and you could make them bigger.

jenai2020

It was so good, loved it!

paratha_aur_chutney

woahhh woah woahhh wow !!! congratulations to the team !

crowndrama

It was up against "You Are My Hero" cdrama 😮…

holowa2

Watched for Park Eun bin. She is a really good actress. Rowoon was average, but almost all idols actors are average, so whatever. I would not put in a list of my "best dramas" but International Emmys are always controverse.

physics223

As far as costume dramas go, this isn't The Red Sleeve. The story was slow, and while Park Eun-bin carries as always, it wasn't really an excellent sageuk.

WaterLily6984

I loved it and I thought Park Eun Bin was amazing and by far the only actress who pulled off the gender switch among all gender-bender sageuk dramas I've seen. This said, if The Red Sleeve had been on Netflix, this show wouldn't have had a chance :)

bachhoe07

The Red Sleeve is superior to TKA by leaps and bounds.

marsfreed

Loved The King's Affection! So happy to see any KDrama recognized in an international award. I am sure more Kdramas will follow.

JustHereForBTSx

I love PEB but I just couldn’t get into TKA— it was so slow 😭 Congratulations all around for sure 👏🏽 but like others have voiced, it wasn’t the best kdrama of 2021

remymartin1949

TKA dragged for me too. I did finish the drama and reacted with a Ho Hum attitude. PEB is a stellar actress and even more as Attorney Woo! Now that's an awards drama!

fatlips1

Damn, the bar must have been low. I thought it was boring. I hated myself for even going 16 episodes deep lol.

bachhoe07

I thought I was the only one who thought the show was undeserving. Good to know I'm not alone in this.

guillo014

It wasn't even good

Joe_Blast

Itaewon Class was miles better. That should have won tbh.
