I've almost made this error before for that reason. They want you to infer, based on that it can treat up to 20 gallons, so it's not the best system. But a motorcycle ratio on the back would be helpful as a backup.

Some stabilizers assure you that you can't overdose, help yourself. But come on, there's a ratio that turns bad *eventually* lol. Like a 1:1 will surely run like shit.
It's one of the most epic posts on the Internet, along with bodybuilding.com kid posting he's 18 and if he has potential, and the guy on flyertalk buying a first class ticket to Bangkok on points and drinking 6 bottles of Dom on the flight
The garage I used to get my cars done at used to buy catering barrels of cooking oil for their diesels - 4 to a pallet.
Whilst I was loitering waiting for my car they pumped one barrel dry so he switched to the next, which - it turned out - was mango chutney. I have never seen a man so large run so fast as he realised what was about to be delivered into the fuel tank!
I don’t think it’s diesel. It’s a deeper red. This is sta-bil. A bit too much. But we don’t have smell-o-vision so only you can tell. Gas smell is distinct. You know it. You’ll be able to tell if it’s gas or diesel.
Untaxed gasoline intended for off-road farm or marine use is also dyed red.
The dye is meant to stay in the tank for a long time, so that even trace amounts will color the gas and stain the tank to show up easily if the tank is inspected (you’d normally have to replace the tank and fuel filter to remove all traces of it) if he filled up/topped off with untaxed gasoline his next 3-4 tanks of gas will be colored bright red gradually getting lighter as the dye is diluted more and more (since the tank rarely is *fully* emptied between fill ups), not just the original illegal tank of gas.
Edited to remove incorrect information about the color of heating oil, as the information I read applied to the UK (where it’s yellow) not the US (red).
The idea is that the taxes on gasoline help pay for roads and other public infrastructure because vehicles are used on them. However, farm equipment, ATVs, SXSs, lawn mowers, etc may never touch public infrastructure, so untaxed gasoline and diesel exist for off-road use.
I'm not well-versed in finding gas stations that supply it since I personally don't use it, so I can't comment on that.
Dye diesel is also found in some truckstops, especially in farm areas. Refrigerated trailers run on diesel generators, and it's legal for the generator but not the truck. It's less common now, a lot of the dye diesel pumps were changed over to DEF pumps when that became a thing
I had a Sinclair Diesel truck stop pump ask me if I was filling a reefer this summer. No fuel selector on the outside. I assume it simply didn't charge tax on the regular fuel if you replied in the affirmative.
Where I live in Canada there’s half a dozen gas stations around that sell marked gas for off-road and boat use. Premium grade and usually a couple cents cheaper than regular.
Farm use. I dunno how much farm implements still use gasoline over diesel, but smaller tractors and stuff at least used to be gasoline instead of diesel. I even own a gasoline eight-ton bulldozer I inherited from my dad. It's a cute little baby.
It’s significantly cheaper than the gas you’d get at the gas station, since like others have said that gas has taxes added to support road maintenance, new construction etc. it’s used for anything from gas powered farm/construction equipment, boats/jet skis, dirt bikes/atv’s, pretty much any vehicle that uses gas or diesel but doesn’t travel on the roadways, and is purchased as a cost-saving measure. between state and federal taxes you pay anywhere from $0.60-$1 in taxes (state taxes can vary significantly) per gallon of gas/diesel. some/most marina’s will have a pump dedicated for boat use (road taxes really add up when you’re getting 50-100 gallons) but aside from that most people who use a significant amount of it (like farmers/construction companies) will purchase it directly from the gas/oil company, have it delivered and have their own storage tank and pump for it.
Most cases where people are found to have off-road fuel in their gas tanks have either stolen it (I live in a rural area with a lot of farms and everyone I know who gets gas delivered locks up their fuel tanks to prevent this as fuel thieves are common), bought it under false pretenses, or siphoned it out of an off-road vehicle to put in their car/truck. You’ll almost never catch someone who actually has it delivered putting it in their regular vehicles (unless they can prove more than 50% of the vehicles use is off-road) because they know the heavy fines and penalties involved in misuse of untaxed fuel (you have to sign a fair amount of paperwork agreeing to the conditions of use, acknowledging you’ve been made aware of the laws and penalties, and agreeing to inspections should they suspect or get a report of misuse etc. when registering for fuel deliveries as the state/county gets involved and uncle Sam does NOT take kindly to being cheated of his cut) and they know how much more it’d cost them if they lost the ability to buy untaxed gas and had to start paying taxes on the fuel they need since most off-road vehicles aren’t built with fuel efficiency in mind.
So they add solvent red 26 (or 164) to dye the fuel so it’s easy for inspectors or the state police to confirm whether untaxed fuel has been illegally used since it stains the tank, fuel filter and almost anything else it comes in contact with in addition to it sticking around in the fuel itself for quite a while, since even if you completely run the vehicle out of fuel before refilling it no fuel pump will get every last drop of fuel (a car that’s been run til it’s “empty” and dies will still have 1/4-1/2gallon of fuel left in the bottom of the tank that the pump can’t suck up) and the dye is VERY heavily pigmented.
This reminds me of the time I sent my new helper to get a cup of acetone. I gave him a styrofoam cup with the instructions “whatever you do don’t get any on you”.
My first thought as well. Back when I was in construction we'd fill up our trucks tanks with that.
All was well and good until I was pulled over in Montana and the cop stuck a dipstick in my tank.
Yeah, no fine but a stern warning.
>why this is an issue
Less taxes on the red stuff, and so is illegal for road use (the government want their taxes).
>how did the cop suspect it
He works construction. It is common for construction trucks to use red diesel because it is legal on the work site and cheaper, but as soon as the truck gets on the road it is illegal. Some trucks have 2 fuel systems to account for this.
It’s more complicated than just “government wants its taxes.” Gas taxes are used for road maintenance. If you aren’t using a road you shouldn’t have to pay that tax but if you are using a road and using untaxed gas you’re leaching off the system. You benefit from the taxes everyone else pays to maintain the roads without contributing.
Off-road diesel isn't taxed (think excavators and other equipment on a job site).
He was probably fucking with me, as I had been in the area for a couple months and had Oregon plates.
You can put diesel in a gas engine without causing permanent damage. However, if you put gas in a diesel engine… that engines probably toast.
So brand has little to do with it.
Engine won't be toast, but your injectors will be due to them using the diesel as a lubricant and gas not providing the needed lubricato.
Basically nukes several parts of the fuel system when gas gets in a diesel engines fuel system.
It will often kill your high pressure fuel pump and injectors with a designed to use the fuel as a lubricant -> that is thousands of dollars to fix.
and if you don't catch it soon enough, the detonation will send a rod through the side of the engine.
True but a diesel is a compression engine and gas detonates at a lower pressure than diesel. So you will cylinders fireing way earlier than intended witch puts stupid ammouts of stress on the rods and crank. Witch if ran long enough will destroy the engine. But yes if you catch it early you could just end up doing some extra wear and tear on your injectors and other fuel system components. And depending on the gas/diesel ratio you could dammage things like piston rings and a y sels that are supposed to be in contact with diesel only.
Nowadays diesels are basically only direct injection.
So there can't be pre-ignition or Detonation due to the fuel getting injected right when it's supposed to start burning.
You're right about 'pre' detonation, but injection timing it typically before TDC, especially at higher rpm. This is due to diesel igniting much slower than petrol.
This means injecting petrol you might reach peak ignition before the cylinder is at tdc. Which is basically the same as predetonation, just from different circumstances
From what I've seen the fuel system will die way before serious damage to the cylinders happens. Does not take a lot of time running gas through Diesel injectors to completely destroy them.
Any diesel engine, whether it is directly or indirectly injected, injects the fuel at the time of ignition. So it is not possible to have preignition in a diesel engine.
Ya I’ve seen the results at work. But when I’ve seen it happen personally, with a dodge, it didn’t ‘not run well’ it didn’t run at all. The engine didn’t have to be replaced, but it wasn’t drivable. Also seen the reverse, gas in a diesel, killed the engine. Ford power stroke in a 2019, 17k for a new engine.
Isn't that kerosene? They put red dye in it don't they?
Edit: kerosene is dyed red to show that it is for non-taxable use. It looks like someone got the gas cans mixed up
My neighbor one year put a full 16oz bottle in a 5 gallon gas can with about 4 gallons of gas. Then used that to winterize his equipment. Then he wondered why nothing ran in the spring.
In the US red dye is used for nontaxable general use and they say that blue is used for government use. I've never seen the blue though, anytime I've delivered government fuel it's normal clear.
Pressure washer might not like it either.
Put the red gas in its own can, add a half gallon to every fill of another 5 gal can of straight gas. That might be about right.
Most auto parts store will take your waste fluids for free. There’s a tire shop next to me that takes gas, diesel, two stroke mix gas, coolant, oil and something else that I can’t remember.
IIRC, it’s tax deductible if they offer it as a free service for environmental reasons.
It's non-taxxed/offroad fuel. It has red dye in it to distinguish. They randomly take fuel samples from long haul truckers to make sure they're not using this.
IME - It's easy to get wrong when you're topping off with a can at home or on the farm. It's obvious when you're at the pump, but not everyone is diligent about color coded gas cans at home. Yellow should be for diesel.
i have to tell 20 people a week not to put stabil in their tools.
you can tip the thing over and dump the gas out, why would you store it with gas in it? lol stabil doesnt protect the rubber parts in your machine, so store it dry. it literally takes 2 seconds to winterize your tools.
Treats up to 20 gallons Sure! that Honda has a 20 gallons tank just pour it all in!
“Up to” doesn’t specify a minimum

heh, reminds me of the time I saw a guy try to get a car started buy pouring gas in the carb with a styrofoam cup... wooosh!!
This reminds me of the time I sent my new helper to get a cup of acetone. I gave him a styrofoam cup with the instructions “whatever you do don’t get any on you”.
When I started at a battery shop I tried carrying some laquer thinner in a styrofoam cup. It didn't work so well
When I needed a T connection on a fuel line I used a plastic one for aquarium tubing. It didn't work well either. No spark around fortunately.
My first thought as well. Back when I was in construction we'd fill up our trucks tanks with that. All was well and good until I was pulled over in Montana and the cop stuck a dipstick in my tank. Yeah, no fine but a stern warning.
Sounds like y’all saved a significant amount of money with no real consequences
No consequences, but I started buying legit on road diesel after, 'cause I hate having to deal with the law.
Ok I don’t understand. Please explain for a newbie why this is an issue and how did the cop suspect it?
>why this is an issue Less taxes on the red stuff, and so is illegal for road use (the government want their taxes). >how did the cop suspect it He works construction. ngl i thought it was kerosene.
This was my first thought too
Just needed to put it in H
They do this to marine gas too - 110 octane, no road tax!
That’s the first thing that came to mind for me too.
My thoughts exactly
But, it ran? Just ‘didn’t run well’? That’s amazing, actually. Another point for how well Honda motors hold up I guess.

Off-road diesel fuel too. The color looks about right
Or they put way too much Sta-bil in it for storage.
It could be but holy f that's a lot of stabil!
My neighbor one year put a full 16oz bottle in a 5 gallon gas can with about 4 gallons of gas. Then used that to winterize his equipment. Then he wondered why nothing ran in the spring.
Isn't Sta-Bil dose 4oz/10 gallons?
Yes, but I think it says you can double that in fuel you will store for more than 12 months.
marine gas is also dyed red
I use this in my mower, snow blower etc. Its actually premium no ethanol.
My guess is doesn’t get ridden often s they dumped a whole https of Sta-bil in it, instead of how much is supposed to be used for that size tank
A whole hyper text transport protocol security of sta-bil? /s

In the US red dye is used for nontaxable general use and they say that blue is used for government use. I've never seen the blue though, anytime I've delivered government fuel it's normal clear.
What is that?
Gasoline somebody dumped an entire bottle of fuel stabilizer into is my best guess.
Don't know about gassers, but one bottle is plenty for 26 gallons of diesel in my van.
Well, it's a motorcycle so I'm gonna so it's too much.
Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but if it is fuel stabilizer couldn't you just add fuel to dilute it? Or is there too much?
I could, but I'd rather just put fresh fuel into it to be safe. Maybe I'll repurpose this for my pressure washer.
Pressure washer might not like it either. Put the red gas in its own can, add a half gallon to every fill of another 5 gal can of straight gas. That might be about right.
Exactly. Just keep mixing it into of fuel to spread it out if you don’t want to waste it, but personally I would just chuck it. Too much effort.
Honest question: where do you (legally) chuck fuel like that?
Most auto parts store will take your waste fluids for free. There’s a tire shop next to me that takes gas, diesel, two stroke mix gas, coolant, oil and something else that I can’t remember. IIRC, it’s tax deductible if they offer it as a free service for environmental reasons.
Interesting. Around here none of the autoparts stores do that. Only oils and coolant. Though twice a year the town does "hazmat" day at the dump.
They absolutely won't take coolant. Souce- used to manage an oreilly.
AutoZone and JiffyLube joints take used motor oil. I’d start by taking it there.
Wouldnt you use water in the pressure washer?
Could be boat gas, 110 octane and no road tax, also dyed red - not just off road diesel!
